Our chat today is with Dr. Kevin Knuth, who joins us from Albany. He is a Professor of Physics at the University at Albany (SUNY). He is a former NASA research scientist designing artificial intelligence algorithms for astrophysical data analysis. His current research interests include the foundations of physics, quantum information, autonomous robotics, the search for and characterization of extrasolar planets, and unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP). Like any good scientist, Kevin is truly interested in the weird. He is inspired by space and by gravity. We learn on what is intimidating vs what is scary, what is perceived as magic, telepathy and intuition, “contriving coincidences”, the importance of the subjective experience, investigating UAPs, a story about the Matrix and a hairy raising story about a personal experience that became a catalyst for his sleeplessness and his deep curiosity about the weird. Today we're going to listen to a conversation between our colleague Lizza Dwoskin and her friend Aisha Bowe, an aerospace engineer who was on the all-female Blue Origin flight that went to space in April. It's about navigating what happens when a dream comes true — and then sparks public outrage. Blue Origin, the space company, is owned by Jeff Bezos. He also owns The Washington Post and is the co-founder of Amazon. Some of the other crew members were celebrities, including pop star Katy Perry and broadcast journalist Gayle King.The flight became a flash point for anger from the political left directed at billionaires associated with the Trump administration. Bezos was among the tech moguls who attended Donald Trump's second inauguration. Now that some time has passed, Aisha was ready to sit down and talk about what this has all been like for her. Dr John Brandenburg is a plasma physicist and astrophysicist who worked on NASA's Clementine Lunar Mission, before he became interested in NASA images of Mars revealing ancient oceans and artificial structures. In 1986, he first discovered evidence of an ancient ocean on Mars, which he presented at a scientific conference. The ocean's existence was recently confirmed by Chinese scientists studying the recent data from China's Mars rover. Some farmers fear the trade war from President Trump's tariffs could put them out of business. After nine months stranded in space, NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams will be back on Earth today. Their stay on the International Space Station was only supposed to last eight days but their mission had to be extended after the spacecraft they arrived on experienced technical issues. They are coming home this morning - and are expected to splashdown just before 11am New Zealand time.
