Let's get in to part 3 of Alcatraz, in this episode we go over the start of the federal prison, the notorious inmates, and the close of the prison. Alcatraz, often dubbed "The Rock," began its journey as a federal prison in 1934. Its location on a desolate island in San Francisco Bay made it an ideal site for housing some of the most notorious criminals in American history. The prison was designed to hold prisoners who caused trouble at other penitentiaries or were considered extremely dangerous.Notable inmates included the likes of Al Capone, the infamous Chicago mob boss, who served time for tax evasion. Another was George "Machine Gun" Kelly, a notorious gangster. The Birdman of Alcatraz, Robert Stroud, although famous for his bird studies, was actually incarcerated at Leavenworth and never kept birds while at Alcatraz.Alcatraz was characterized by its stringent security measures and the belief that it was inescapable. Despite this reputation, there were attempts to escape, one of the most famous being the 1962 attempt by Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers. They crafted dummy heads to fool the guards and managed to escape through tunnels but were presumed to have drowned in the bay during their getaway. The prison faced deteriorating infrastructure and escalating maintenance costs, leading to its closure in 1963. The isolated island prison was deemed too expensive to maintain and had lost its efficacy as newer, more advanced facilities emerged. After its closure, Alcatraz gained notoriety as a tourist destination and a symbol of America's criminal justice system. There he made brief remarks to the League of United Latin American Citizens at the Rice Hotel. He then addressed a dinner in honor of Representative Albert Thomas. Some of that speech was just heard. The President and First Lady then traveled to Fort Worth where they stayed at the Texas Hotel. He had speeches set for Fort Worth and Dallas the next day. It's true crime, mystery, and the paranormal all rolled up into one historic location – Alcatraz! Alcatraz Island is a small island a little over one mile off the coast of San Francisco. It's home to the infamous Alcatraz federal prison which housed the worst of the worst criminals for 29 years before it was shut down in 1963. Al Capone, George “Machine Gun” Kelly, and Robert Stroud, The Bird Man of Alcatraz, were among its famous inmates. It's the also the inspiration for the 1979 Clint Eastwood movie, “Escape From Alcatraz” which was based on the true story about 3 inmates who allegedly successfully escaped from the prison. San Francisco native, researcher, psychic and paranormal investigator Jeff Dwyer, and ABC News 7 Bay Area journalist and producer, Casey Pratt share the history of the prison and some of its inmates, recount the real-life details of the famous escape story, and more importantly, delve into the paranormal experiences and ghostly sightings that have plagued the island almost since its discovery.
