While America's Got Talent (AGT): Season 16 is on its Summer Olympics hiatus, the Jake's Take's AGT Season 16 special podcast continues! This week, I welcomed comedian Kabir Singh to the podcast.Over the past 11 years, Kabir has built a following as he toured across the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. His material helped him win several comedy competitions, including the Rooster T. Feathers Bay Area, San Jose Improv Bay Area, the San Francisco International Comedy Competition, and the $10,000 Knights of Comedy Competition at LaughFest. He was also able to share the stage with top comedians, including Dave Chappelle, Bill Burr, Russell Peters, and Dane Cook. Also, Kabir placed third in the 2016 Big Sky Comedy Festival and was named a finalist for NBC's nationwide Stand Up for Diversity showcase.Kabir Singh also released several comedy albums, including 2013's Welcome to the Future and 2019's The Calm Before the Storm. Before auditioning for AGT, Kabir appeared on several shows such as Amazon Prime's Inside Jokes, Comedy Central's Stand Up Revolution with Gabriel Iglesias, FOX's Family Guy, Laughs, and Punchline.In the eighth edition of Jake's Take's AGT Season 16 podcast series, Kabir revisited his America's Got Talent: Season 16 audition and revealed his hopes of becoming the first comedian to win the long-running talent competition.

“I always loved comedy,” Tekurah says, since high school. Jake Johannsen was her first standup crush in the Bay Area.  “When somebody makes me laugh, I become attracted to them,” she says. She and her friends would crowd into a car on a day off school to stand around the studio for a drive-time radio show with lots of standup comedy guests. Funny, yes, but intoxicating and attention-holding in a way that comedy albums and TV appearances and sitcoms don’t quite compare: “Live comedy is my thing,” she says. “As an introvert, I save up all my energy, go to the club, then go home.” That’s my superficial take of a deep discussion we have about humor here. You’ll dig it. Find out why she can’t watch Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (“my secret shame,” she says), why she sits in the front row, and why her podcast has “paw” in the title but isn’t about animals (I had to drop that last one in to promote her kick-ass work).  WANT TO KNOW MORE? > Tekurah lived through one comedy boom of the 1980s. Boom. It came back, kids. Will it come back again after COVID-19? Dunno. Here’s how it hit hard in the UK. > Comics with troubling opinions, jokes and history? She tried Joe Rogan at a club (Bill Burr, whom Tekurah digs, talks to him here about COVID-19), but that didn’t work out. I couldn’t find Todd Glass’ politically incorrect joke (which, maybe, he doesn’t even perform anymore), so we’ll leave that out. > The Comedy Store, which Tekurah found, is in West Hollywood. She's right: A comic died by suicide next door during a strike. > Tekurah was weaned on public TV’s Comedy Tonight, hosted by Alex Bennett, who chats up Robin Williams and others on drive-time radio in San Francisco here  > Patton Oswalt and Blaine Capatch did crazy stuff on Comedy Central (case in point, with the voice of Penn Jillette)  > Rooster T. Feathers is where Tekurah saw Carlos Alazraqui (“one of the first comedians I saw live,” she says, and who did cartoons and played Garcia on Reno 911)  > Tekurah digs Jimmy Pardo (“The man who saved me from listening to Adam Carolla,” she says, and his fans’ “misogynist” ideas about what women have to offer men, and vice versa). She also digs Maria Bamford, with a joke about religion that’s “so perfect.”

This documentary tells the history of the Westside Barbell Powerlifting Club and its founder Louie Simmons. The doc is narrated by Ron Perlman and focuses on Louie’s youth, his discovery of the Culver City Westside Barbell club, his journey into powerlifting and his accomplishments. Plus a lot of powerlifting drama. If you follow the sport you’ll be sure to recognize many of the club’s famous names and accomplishments. The doc follows Westside from its origins to its its domination through the 90s and early 2000s and to relative obscurity in the era of raw powerlifting.Our guest is comedian Jesse Hett. Jesse is a stand-up comedian based in Oakland, California. He has appeared on the front page of the Wall Street Journal doing comedy while wearing a virtual reality helmet. That sounds made up but it's true, you can look it up. He has performed in SF Sketchfest and the Savage Henry Comedy Festival; Rooster T. Feathers, the San Jose Improv, and the San Francisco and Sacramento Punch Lines. On EP23 Paco, George, and producer Will talk with comedian/podcaster Red Scott about Making A Murderer, the Netflix doc that took America by storm! Questions will be half answered, jokes will be told, and nothing will be solved! Exonerated after spending nearly two decades in prison for a crime he did not commit, Steven Avery filed suit against Manitowoc County, Wis., and several individuals involved with his arrest. Shortly after, however, Avery found himself behind bars again, this time accused of the murder of 25-year-old photographer Teresa Halbach. She was last seen on Avery's property, where she was to photograph a vehicle. Avery and nephew Brendan Dassey were tried and (spoiler alert) convicted of the crime. But that's not the end of the story. When Columbia graduate students Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos read about Avery, they felt his story would make an interesting documentary. And they were right!Growing up in San Jose, CA, Red Scott never saw things the same way as other kids; he thought he was cool. Born in the early 80s, he established himself as a trend-setter — fat, asthmatic, and socially inept years before Asperger’s was a syndrome or obesity an epidemic. On his way to finding the stage, Red had several diversions, ranging from working as a Software Developer to delivering for Pizza Hut in South Central Los Angeles. Red combines obscure and outdated references with the crazed insistence of a mental patient. His act encompasses everything from politics to absurdism to wordplay, all combined with deft crowd work. When not on stage, Red explores the myriad of ways an individual can be indoors and fully protected from the sun. His podcast discussing Game of Thrones, “Boars, Gore, and Swords” has twice been featured on BoingBoing.
