Episode 272: That's A Long Way To Go Man with AJ Finney (Last Comic Standing)Sometimes stand-up comedian AJ Finney is just livin' his life wrong. At the Tropicana Casino in New Jersey (circa 2014) he had a mall-massage-induced panic attack AND one of his worst bombs. He wasn't confident, and couldn't bring his set around. Most of the time, he destroys - and he was able to talk to Dan Bublitz Jr about producing comedy albums, how everyone is a nerd about something, why comics sit in the back of the room, how comics have a magnified perception of what's going on on stage compared to an audience, and you know - working in a casino is just weird.Sponsored by https://www.puxhub.com/: Hey bomb squad if you're a comedian or podcaster looking for an affordable website solution with a modern look then we recommend PuxHub! Comedy, jam bands, and Volkswagens — that's him. He's an eco-friendly, improvisational, sometimes philosophical, patchouli-soaked quipster. AJ's organic approach is refreshing and his poetic stream-of-consciousness style makes for a colorful and unforgettable comedic experience. His audience (much like the Deadheads) is finding him through alternative venues such as music festivals, head shops, and record stores. In 2014 AJ was crowned “Best of the Midwest” winner at Gilda's LaughFest in Grand Rapids, was featured on the FOX television show Laughs, and was one of the 100 performers chosen for Season 8 of NBC's Last Comic Standing. In 2013 he was a semifinalist in the Comedy Central talent search Up Next, as well as a finalist in the 2011 San Francisco International Comedy Competition. He was voted “Best in Fest” at the 2011 Detroit LaughFest and was a finalist in HBO's Lucky 21 comedy competition. AJ is an effective and engaging storyteller with a rhythm that quickly pulls you into his world. The RevRep Podcast sits down with comedian Brandon Young! Brandon talks about his Dry Bar Comedy special, what it's like being the executive producer of comedy festivals, and which trading card the Reverend should just go ahead and burn in a fire. During controlled rowdiness there is a lot of confusion about vegetable, NWO vs WCW vs WWE talk, and a few very curious admissions. Brandon Young is a Christian comedian based out of San Diego, California who's been able to use a wide variety of topics ranging from strange observations to growing up in a small town with his weird family and why he despises people who dip French fries into milkshakes, to reach a vast array of people. His intelligently crafted material is a hit with all types of audiences. His Dry Bar Comedy special, Chicken Gone, was released in August 2021. He can also be heard on Pandora Radio and Spotify and seen on Comedy Time TV. Brandon's also been featured in festivals like the San Diego Comedy Festival, Paul Bunyan Comedy Festival, LaughFest, and Border City Comedy Festival. He's even worked with comedy legends Kevin Pollak, Cathy Ladman, Jimmy Brogan, Eddie Brill, and Dana Carvey. In May 2009, Brandon founded the Rock Comedy Ministry, arguably the first comedy ministry of its kind in the world, at the Rock Church in San Diego. Using a mixture of stand-up, sketch comedy, and improv, the Rock Comedy Ministry has been able to bring laughter to people who wouldn't otherwise receive it such as the homeless, elderly in convalescent homes, and cancer patients. Brandon specifically has performed for churches and other organizations and has been a part of fundraisers that have raised thousands of dollars for the Alzheimer's Association, global missionaries, victims of domestic violence, and victims of human trafficking among others. Originally from a small town in Michigan called Oscoda, Brandon is middle-aged, middle-classed, married to a woman way out of his league, has no kids, and owns a dog. Basically, his life is that of every leading man in every sitcom from the 1960's. He brings his Midwest charm and likability to a world that truly needs it. If you regularly feel stressed out, humor can be your secret weapon for burnout prevention. This week on Decode Your Burnout, I interviewed Heather Tolley-Bauer, a stand-up comedian who shares her wisdom about comedy and tips for successful living. She reminds us that not everything is a laugh out loud moment, but we need to find the things that are and laugh when we can. She also shares one of the formulas for being funny. Heather Tolley-Bauer is a drop-dead funny, stay-at-home mom, wife, and colorectal cancer-survivor. As a stand-up comedian, she provides all kinds of audiences with much-needed laughs to cope with everything from marriage, middle-age & millennials to parenting, Pinterest, the PTA, a Pandemic and so much more. She books, hosts and produces a wildly popular show called Laugh-Lines & Stretch-Marks®️, has opened for nationally touring comic Brian Moote, appeared on the Weather Channel's original program, Weather Gone Viral, and was recently selected to perform at the prestigious LaughFest in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Her top 7 tips include: 1. Don't take yourself too seriously, but take your business seriously. You will not be for everyone, so just be OK with it. 2. You don't have to have it all figured out before you take action 3. Once you have some tested material under your belt, you can customize the experience for the audience and do it without the message being fully baked 4. If you're going to do work that takes you away from your family, have it be meaningful 5. As an entrepreneur, you need to know how much it costs you to do business and how much you want to make. This will help you figure out how much wiggle room you have in your pricing when onboarding a new client so you're never giving away what you're doing in terms of money or energy. By establishing your bottom line, you give yourself permission to hold the line around your pricing. 6. If you're a people pleaser and you tend to give the farm away because you want people to like you, because it's hard for you to say no, because you feel guilty, or because you think it's selfish to focus on yourself, then take this to heart: Figure out what your bottom line is, which means in your case, what are you already committed to? What do you need for yourself? What are the essentials that you need to protect yourself from burnout so that you can still show up for other people without showing up so much that you're not showing up for yourself? 7. It's up to each one of us to define what it means to be successful. We review the documentary Too Soon: Comedy After 9/11 which you can catch on Vice TV on Sept. 8th, just a few days before the 20th anniversary of the 2001 attacks. The documentary features interviews with comedians including David Cross, Gilbert Godfried, Janeane Garofolo, and Marc Maron about the struggle to re-establish humor's place in the aftermath of the attacks that day. The film explores how stand-up comedians, Broadway performers, late-night hosts, and Saturday Night Live helped audiences laugh even in the darkest of days. Our guest is Julie Seabaugh the director, executive producer, and story editor of Too Soon: Comedy After 9/11.Too Soon premieres on VICE TV September 8 at 9 p.m. and will be repeating numerous times thereafter. (VICE TV is available via all major satellite and cable providers and the VICE TV app via iOS, Android, Apple TV, Roku, and Chromecast.)Julie Seabaugh grew up on a farm in rural Missouri and discovered stand-up when Dave Attell performed during her senior year of college. Way back in 2003, she founded and edited the criminally ahead of its time print and online comedy magazine Two Drink Minimum. Now the only full-time freelance comedy journalist in the United States, she's contributed to The New York Times, Rolling Stone, The Hollywood Reporter, GQ, Variety, The A.V. Club, The Village Voice, The Huffington Post, Spin, Playboy, Vulture, Paste, Time Out New York, Time Out Chicago, and numerous other alt-weeklies. Seabaugh's coverage of modern roasting culminated in the 2018 book Ringside at Roast Battle: The First Five Years of L.A.'s Fight Club for Comedians, and her love of Mitch Hedberg led to producing/hosting 2020's Hope on Top: A Mitch Hedberg Oral History for SiriusXM's Comedy Central Channel (available to stream via the SiriusXM app). With Emmy-nominated director and editor Nick Scown, she is currently producing the documentary Too Soon: Comedy After 9/11. Participants include David Cross, Janeane Garofalo, Gilbert Gottfried, Lewis Black, Darrell Hammond, Doug Stanhope, and Marc Maron; the film's 2021 release will mark the twentieth anniversary of the attacks. Among her career highlights, simultaneous Bridget Everett Village Voice and Roast Battle L.A. Weekly cover stories ran on both sides of the country the week of September 8, 2014. Interviewees over the years include Carl Reiner, Christopher Guest, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Joan Rivers, George Carlin, Don Rickles, Eddie Izzard, Drew Carey, Howie Mandel, Jimmy Kimmel, Key & Peele, Judd Apatow, Lily Tomlin, Mitch Hedberg, Seth Meyers, Wanda Sykes, and Zach Galifianakis. Having previously served as A&E staff writer at Las Vegas Weekly, Seabaugh won a 2015 Nevada Press Association Award for a cover profile tracing the downward health spiral of The Amazing Johnathan. “It's obvious the author is a wordsmith,” judges wrote. “Every sentence is well thought out. It's full of lively adjectives and truly paints a picture of what the Amazing Johnathan looks like, what he's experiencing and how he got to his current state. I felt like he was sitting next to me, boisterously telling his story.”For nearly two decades Seabaugh has covered, judged, and moderated panels at festivals including the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Just for Laughs Montreal, SXSW, San Francisco Sketchfest, New York Comedy Festival, Just for Laughs Toronto, Sasquatch, Grand Rapids' Gilda's LaughFest, Montana's Big Sky Comedy Festival, Austin's Moontower, Portland's Bridgetown, the Seattle International Comedy Competition, Riot L.A., Nashville's Wild West Comedy Festival, and Atlanta's Laughing Skull.Follow Julie on:Twitter: @julieseabaughFollow us on:Twitter: @supdocpodcastInstagram: @supdocpodcastFacebook: @supdocpodcastsign up for our mailing listAnd you can show your support to Sup Doc by donating on Patreon.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In this bonus episode of All2ReelToo we have an All2Interview with comic/author/actor Steve Sabo.... Slowing down is not in Steve Sabo's vocabulary. Tirelessly working the road an astonishing 52 weeks a year, this comedy road warrior brings laughter and joy all over the nation, and beyond. No stage is too big or too small; he has performed for crowds as large as 5,000 and as small as two. First hitting the comedy stage straight out of high school at 18, he has honed his craft at comedy clubs, dirty bars, shiny casinos, military bases, cruise ships, colleges, corporate shows, fundraisers, restaurants and even a back yard or two. His comedy has universal appeal, and his experience shows it. In his 29 years as a performer, he has had the privilege of sharing the stage with comedy legends such as Joan Rivers, Chris Rock, Kevin James, Dave Attel, Jim Breuer, Christopher Titus and Tom Green. He has made television appearances on HBO, NBC, E! and Comedy Central. He is heard regularly on SiriusXM Satellite Radio and has appeared on the nationally syndicated "Sex Talk Live" , "BTS Radio Show" and "The Jiggy Jaguar Show". In addition, he landed the lead in a low-budget horror film ("Hell's Lake", currently in post-production), entertained the troops in Iraq and Kuwait, performed at 2007's "Gathering of the Juggalos", and has been seen nationally and internationally at such festivals as Gilda's "Laughfest"(three times), Calgary's "Funnyfest", "The Detroit International Comedy Festival" (twice) and "The Great Plains Comedy Festival" (twice). In all, he has performed in 46 states, 7 countries and 4 islands. He also filmed a cameo in another full length feature film, "PI Day, Die Day" , which was released theatrically on March 14, 2016. In May of 2017, he was honored to perform on "Rock on the Range", the nation's largest rock music festival, headlined by Metallica. An admitted workaholic, Sabo has released six full length comedy albums, including 2009's "A Mouthful of Sea-Monkeys" which was heralded as "One of the top ten comedy albums of 2009" according to the Serious Comedy Site. His plans to record his newest CD, "Put Away Wet" have been delayed due to Covid-19 lockdowns. However, instead of sitting on his laurels he took the opportunity to write and release his first novel, a thriller titled "Jester's Run" in late 2020 and his latest book, "How to FAIL at Stand-Up Comedy" in April of 2021. All of his releases are available on Amazon and I-Tunes. Known among his peers as a consummate professional and a comedy chameleon, he has the ability to adjust his act to his environment. Whether the situation calls for a clean show, a dirty show or something in between, he has the experience and material to satisfy any crowd. Considered adult-friendly and intelligent, his honest and observational style, topped with a high energy and frenetic pace, has made him a fan favorite from coast to coast. On today's episode of The AMPLIFY Show, I chat with Adam Cayton-Holland, a nationally touring comedian and the author of Tragedy Plus Time: A Tragi-comic Memoir. I saw Adam's live show during Laughfest, a comedy festival that is held annually in Grand Rapids to raise money for Gilda's Club (a wonderful organization that helps people dealing with grief and cancer). It was my last “normal” outing with the HAPPY PR team before we switched to remote because of COVID-19. As expected, the show was very impactful. It was a comedy, yet Adam addressed really heavy topics, like the loss of his little sister to suicide. I was in awe at how he walked that line of funny and tragic so gracefully. He had the audience crying at some moments, then causing a big burst of laughter through the tears the next. It is really something to experience! I was surprised to hear about his experiences with therapy and how, like me, he found some relief and help with EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), a form of treatment designed to alleviate the trauma. We talk about our experiences with EMDR, our personal losses, and finding ways to be productive and find purpose after tragedy. Adam Cayton-Holland has appeared on Conan, The Late Late Show with James Corden, Comedy Central Presents, and he was named one of “10 Comics to Watch” by Variety. “This is not clean, this is not pretty, there's no happy ending... You're always gonna be damaged, but the trick is to let the beauty of life outweigh that.” -Adam Cayton-Holland Topics discussed on this episode of The Amplify Show: [3:20] Adam's background, losing his sister [5:00] Starting to cope with and write about loss [7:40] Mourning and processing while writing his book [9:00] Feeling free enough to “take a swing and miss” [10:00] Everyone has loss in their life; vulnerability connects people [11:30] Terrible therapy experiences [12:50] Trying EMDR Therapy [16:00] “Am I not mourning this properly anymore?” [17:15] Dealing with trauma-induced triggers [21:00] Adam's advice for dealing with grief and trauma Connect with Adam: Website Instagram Facebook Connect with me: Website Instagram Facebook This episode was first published at www.emilyrichett.com/episode-21

Former student Paulina Combow stops by the studios to inspire and inform us of her progress. Paulina attended college in a small town in Western, KY where she learned Mass Communications. After graduating, she felt a “comedy internal clock” ticking and decided to berth that comedy baby. She started in the Fall of 2011 and hasn't stopped since. Paulina is a force of nature. Not only does she co-host a morning radio program and put on three separate independent comedy shows a month, she also finds time to travel to do a few gigs on the road and appear at LaughsFest. In this episode we talk specifically about: One thing she took away from the writing class that put things in perspective for her The differences between her open mics at bars and one at the bookstore on Vanderbilt University campus Her philosophy on the clean vs dirty debate Her list of her “demands" for any venue if they want her to start a comedy show The few benefits (and challenges) of being a female comic Using her credentials as a radio personality to gain access to venues and entertainers Her experience doing a showcase at LaughFest in Grand Rapids, MI and much, much more! This week, in honor of LaughFest you get two bonus interviews. Last year I was honored to perform in the clean comedy showcase during the festival. It was a blast and I got to work with several great comedians. You've already heard the interviews with Andy Hendrickson, Pat McGann, and James P. Connolly. This week I am releasing the two remaining interviews Tony Deyo and Robert Mac. Robert Mac has put in two decades behind the mic but hit his stride the last seven years or so as he developed a persona on stage who is both confident and clueless at the same time. Now a Comedy Central veteran, we discuss his his time in the San Francisco comedy scene the benefits of being able to write for t.v. and the value of pursuing different niches Check out RobertMac.com for more and be sure to watch his Comedy Central Clip! NOTE: The sound quality is a little off since I was recording without stellar producer Gavin Miller. But, they are great comics and both had a lot of insight for beginners and established comedians alike. == If you enjoy this PODCAST please subscribe in iTunes or STITCHER and leave a comment and ranking. Comedian Tony Deyo began his comedy career during a brief stint in Austin while he was also a full-time middle school band instructor. Realizing he would regret not trying to live his dream Tony took a local comedy class that helped him get the courage to get onstage and pursue stand-up comedy. Now, with an appearance on CONAN under his belt he's marching his way across the country commanding one stage after another.
