Why are airline tickets so expensive in South Africa? Could it be that the closure of Kulula, Mango, SA Express, and Comair-operated British Airways flights has seen a real shortage of seats, giving the remaining airlines an excuse to jack up prices?
The Department of Public Enterprises says SA Express's liquidation is a consequence of bad management, corruption and state capture.
SA Express has been liquidated, and there is now no chance of the airline surviving. Refilwe Moloto speaks to Guy Leitch, SA flyer magazine editor about the demise of the carrier and the impact on the sector; and secretary general of the Dynamic People's Union of South Africa (Dypusa), Mashudu Raphetha, reflects on the impact on employees.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Competition Commission is investigating three (yes, three, that's all it takes) complaints that South Africa's domestic airlines are overcharging since the collapse of Comair at the end of May. Air travel expert and consultant Linden Birns tell Peter Bruce in this edition of Podcasts from the Edge that he doubts the investigation will find much to complain about. The Russian invasion of Ukraine has pushed the price of jetfuel to $151 a barrel, a full 78% higher than it was a year ago. What's an airline to do? As it is, with SAA a shadow of its former self, no SA Express, no Mango, no Kulula, no British Airways there's about 35% less capacity domestically now, says Birns. Yes, there might of been periods when our skies have been overtraded but whether there's room for a new airline, or whether the current players add capacity the fact is demand is growing.

An alarming article from the Business Insider sparked the question, are South African's amongst the most restricted travellers in the world? With little happening in terms of a vaccination rollout and without a credible national carrier where does this leave the South African tourism market? There is still much to be proud of in the aviation sector, Airlink continue to set the standard in the regional market, FlySafair, Comair and Mango show slight number improvements and Cemair start making all the right moves. The era of the narrow-body jet is among us, the A321LR stretches its legs to Heathrow and Jet Blue unveil a radical new design for both economy and business class travellers. Is this the beginning of the end for hub and spoke travel? Ethiopian land at the wrong airport, I loose my cool with a snotty remark from a ex-colleague wearing orange blinkers and the SA Express saga is about to end. SA Express employees are bidding to buy the state-owned airline in an attempt to save jobs and to prevent the carrier's final liquidation. A bid for the airline's assets would be backed by private investors and Fly SAX, with the employees as the owner. Last week the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria granted an extension for SA Express's final liquidation to the 28th of October. Fly SAX Spokesperson, Thabsile Sikhakhane says employees who have not been paid salaries since February want total ownership of the airline. She spoke to us.
The assets value of regional airliner SA Express has decreased from one point eight billion to a hundred and thirty million in five weeks. This is according to the airliner's liquidators in a virtual briefing to Parliament's Standing Committee on Public Accounts,-SCOPA. The liquidators appeared before SCOPA to brief it about the airliner's liquidating process. The liquidators took office last month to start the process to disposing off the asset of SA Express.
A group of SA Express workers this morning marched from Kempton Park to the Union Buildings in Pretoria - to submit a memorandum of requests over the non-payment of their salaries. SA Express employees have not received salaries for March, April and May - and are relying on temporary relief money from the Unemployment Insurance Fund to survive. The state-owned regional airline was placed in provisional liquidation at the end of April. We spoke to our reporter, Amina Accram.
SA Express employees have been without an income for the past four weeks of the lockdown- this comes after the airline failed to pay their salaries for the month of March. The financial situation at the airline, whose flight routes typically service South Africa's smaller cities and neighbouring countries, has deteriorated further as it has suspended flight operations due to the shutdown. SA Express is in business rescue and there are speculations that the rescue practitioners want to liquidate the airline because it has no reasonable prospects of being restructured. We spoke to an employee at SA Express, Papa Mollo...
South African Airways has advised its customers to contact its call centre or their travel agents to make alternate flight arrangements - or request a refund. This after the South African Cabin Crew Association and NUMSA announced that their members will embark on industrial action tomorrow morning over a wage dispute. SAA has cancelled all its domestic, regional and international flights scheduled for tomorrow and Saturday. All flights operated on SA Express, Mango, SA Airlink and other partners will not be affected.
SA Express is readying itself for take-off. In its statement, the airline, says the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has reinstated its Aircraft Maintenance Organisation (AMO) certification. In May, the CAA announced the suspension of the company's operating licence. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to SA express' Acting CEO Matsietsi Mokholo.
Workers at airline SA Express may not get paid come month end. Trade union Fedusa is calling on government to intervene and provide funding to the state-owned entity. The company was grounded last month after failing to comply with safety regulations. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to SA Express spokesperson Refilwe Masemola and asked if the c ompany had issued notices to workers about the possibility that they may not receive their salaries.
Last week SA Express was forced to shut down its operations after having numerous planes grounded and staff walkouts. The Sunday Times then reported that a virtually unknown music promoter was handed a three-year tender to provide fuel to the airline for a cool R2.4 billion. How does this all tie in to where the airline finds itself? And what does it mean for its future? You can count on Justice Malala to bring you all the information you need to know around this. He also explains why the DA is important - despite the bad press it gets... the DA's support being down to 20% because of De Lille, policy and leadership issues, according to research. Find out where Justice thinks the nation stands after 100 days of President Ramaphosa, and why the Guptas get their R250-million worth of loot back from the NPA and Asset Forfeiture Unit. Brought to you by Nando's. Nando's
The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) has lifted the suspension of SA Express' Air Operator Certificate (AOC). This after, the airline's certificate was suspended last week following an audit by the Aviation Authority that revealed deficiencies relating to the operator's safety monitoring systems. For more Sakina Kamwendo spoke to Executive Manager for Aviation Safety Operations, Simon Sekgwabe...
