Historic win for DA in ANC stronghold township | Electoral Roadshow with Wayne Sussman

In this edition of The Electoral Road Show with Chris Steyn, Elections Analyst Supremo Wayne Sussman describes how the Democratic Alliance (DA) has made history by winning its first ever township ward: “Emfuleni, Evaton is an historic ANC stronghold. And last night the DA achieved something sensational. They are able to win its first ever pure township ward, hundred percent township ward, not just in a by-election, but ever…” However, the African National Congress (ANC) did continue its “very good run” in Northwest where they had “an emphatic victory” in a Mahikeng ward, growing from 58% of the vote to 73%. These by-elections took place against the backdrop of a chilling warning from SCOPA that municipalities across the country are unviable, and the ANC NEC moving to make local government reform its singular focus. Says Sussman: “The ANC, particularly after that Gauteng result, is on the back foot now and needs to find great candidates which can connect with communities, find credible mayoral candidates which can turn the negative sentiment towards the party in Gauteng and in many other parts of the country around. This is a key, key few weeks for them.” Meanwhile, Jo'burg residents are facing more steep tariff hikes.

When I first met Katie – it was at Hello Beasty — I was with one of my favourite lunching sidekicks, Courteney Peters and we both felt sure we'd met her before. Turns out we hadn't but instead, had just witnessed what true hospitality looks like. That sort of soft but confident, personable service that makes you feel right at home and cared for in an absolute instant. Sort of like if your Mum has grabbed your onesie from the dryer and popped you into a bed made of freshly cleaned flannel sheets, turned the night light on and sung you your favourite song. You know…familiar reassuring comfort. Look, Katie's not your Mum, but her style of service is similar to being guided through the next two hours of your life by someone who has your best interests at heart and wants your dining experience to get the very best report card possible. It's fair to say, Katie Woodhead had made an impression. That was PCT (pre-covid times) and Katie had been hired by Emma and Stu Rogan to help them establish some structure so their new restaurant could kick off with the best systems in place to perform well in the highly competitive world of making other people's dinner. Katie earned the gig as her reputation for running a slick operation had preceded her. She was instrumental in setting up systems that made the likes of Scopa, The Bresolin, Madame Woo and others run like a tighter than tight ship where the people who worked there felt empowered by education.  It was DCT (during covid times) that Katie headed back home to meet a very important wee man named Stanley and where she had a crack at making English wine and also worked the floor at Noble Rot (the London version – not the one located in our own lovely capital). This chat crosses continents, it includes high-risk travel hijinks, a delicious Marlborough Riesling, a robbery and a who dunnit and a story about a winemaker with one eye that saw Phoebe Waller-Bridge want a lot more of the Woodhead wine storytelling magic. All that before we even get to the brilliant business that Katie has just started. It's called Wineheads and it's designed to share the wonder of wine and how to make it profitable for punters intent on living a life in hospo.Hell bent on breaking the mold this wahine grabs life by the gonads and I'm here for it. While much of the focus has been on the Madlanga Commission and the Ad-Hoc Committee, there is another inquiry that has heard jaw-dropping testimony in Parliament. The Standing Committee on Public Accounts probe has revealed shocking allegations of lengthy disciplinary processes and exorbitant amounts spent to protect the entity's former CEO, among other serious inefficiencies in the Road Accident Fund - RAF. The RAF board recently placed its acting CEO, CFO, Chief Governance Officer and the Head of the CEO's office on precautionary suspension. There are now reports that a new acting CEO has been appointed, bringing to four the number of CEO's the entity has had in the past seven months. With questions still unanswered over the RAF's multi billion rand accounting hole, Scopa will now pursue criminal charges to compel former CEO Collins Letsoalo to appear and account for his decisions. To help us understand why the RAF is susceptible to so much instability and corruption, Bongiwe Zwane spoke to former SCOPA chair, Themba Godi

Bongani Bingwa speaks to Kgomotso Modise, EWN reporter in studio, about the escalating standoff between SCOPA and former RAF CEO Collins Letsoalo, who has repeatedly failed to appear before the committee despite multiple formal summonses, claiming in a viral video that he is avoiding Parliament because people are “trying to kill him”—a statement that has raised serious questions about both his credibility and personal safety; with SCOPA now pursuing possible criminal charges and Parliament taking the unusual step of publicly releasing the summons in an effort to compel his testimony, Letsoalo’s continued absence has stalled the RAF inquiry and deepened concerns about governance, accountability, and transparency within the fund. 702 Breakfast with Bongani Bingwa is broadcast on 702, a Johannesburg based talk radio station. Rise Mzansi leader and SCOPA chairperson in parliament, Songezo Zibi tells Peter Bruce in this first edition of the Podcasts from the Edge of 2025 that with the turn of Donald Trump to the White House and the removal of constraints from social media platforms like X (Twitter) and, now Facebook, he fears for where South Africans might go to look for the truth. Right now, he says, the truth can be whatever you're able to make other people believe. A young democracy like South Africa, he warns, is vulnerable. "We need to make the truth more interesting,” he says. “We need to get the truth into the ring. What does bloodlust on behalf of the truth look like?"
