B. Cox & J. Owe review 50 Cent's explosive debut album Get Rich or Die Tryin' as it turns 20. After a successful run as a protege of Run DMC's Jam Master Jay, the Queens youth turned drug dealer turned emcee was set to make his mark after series of setbacks including being shot multiple times, being dropped by his label while having his debut album scrapped and being blacklisted from the industry. After getting back on his feet and releasing several independent mixtapes, his free agency prompted one of the rap game's most competitive bidding wars. Dr. Dre and Eminem emerged victorious, signing him to a $1 million deal to Shady Records and Aftermath Entertainment and prepared to record his debut album. Working under the masterful guidance and tutelage of Dre and Eminem, the album was also boosted by production from the likes of several standout producers such as Sha Money XL, J-Praize, Rockwilder, Megahertz, Dirty Swift, Mike Elizondo, Darrell "Digga" Branch and others. The multi-layered, multi faceted production approach was the perfect soundtrack behind 50s trademark voice that laced the tracks with a mix of wittty bars and gritty street tales. He was also assisted with features from the likes of Eminem, Nate Dogg and his fellow G-Unit comrades Lloyd Banks, Young Buck and Tony Yayo. The debut week was massive, selling over 870,000 copies, becoming at the time the biggest debut for a hip-hop album ever. the album was boosted by many singles, including the Billboard Hot 100 #1 singles "In the Club" and "21 Questions" along with the Top 10 hit "P.I.M.P". "In the Club" became one of the most successful hip-hop and crossover singles in the 2000s. The album would also become RIAA-certified 9x platinum. It has led to 50 Cent being one of the most successful hip-hop artists of all time and led to his additional successes in branding, entertainment and liquor manufacturing among many other ventures.Visit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comSupport The Vault Classic Music Review on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodBuild Your Own Amazing Podcast Website In Less Than 5 Minutes!https://www.podpage.com/?via=ivecre8Show NotesCrack Magazine: The undeniable impact of 'Get Rich Or Die Tryin'" https://crackmagazine.net/article/long-reads/retrospective-get-rich-die-tryin/OkayPlayer: The secret history of 50 Cent's "Get Rich Or Die Tryin'" https://www.okayplayer.com/originals/secret-history-50-cent-get-rich-or-die-tryin-lp.htmlPassionWeiss: The Diamond In The Dirt-50 Cent's 'Get Rich Or Die Tryin' Turns 20 https://www.passionweiss.com/2023/01/31/the-diamond-in-the-dirt-50-cents-get-rich-or-dyin-turns-20/HipHopXXIV: 50 Cent Responds to Jay-Z's 20 Year Old Warning https://hiphopxxiv.com/50-cent-responds-to-jay-zs-20-year-old-warning/Rock The Bells: Classic Albums: 50 Cent 'Get Rich Or Die Tryin'' https://rockthebells.com/articles/classic-albums-get-rich-or-die-tryin-by-50-cent/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Rhyme and punishment go hand in hand in America. This week, we are featuring Louder Than A Riot, an incredible new podcast from NPR Music. It reveals the interconnected rise of hip-hop and mass incarceration. From Bobby Shmurda to Nipsey Hussle, each episode explores an artist's story to examine a different aspect of the criminal justice system that disproportionately impacts Black America. STORY The Badder, The Better: Bobby Shmurda (Pt 1) Just like his legendary disappearing hat, Brooklyn rapper Bobby Shmurda's career was on the rise in 2014. But so was the evidence in a murder case against his crew, GS9. In the first of three episodes exploring Bobby's story, we look at his come-up through the eyes of former Epic Records exec Sha Money XL, who guided Bobby on his tightrope walk from the streets to superstardom. What happens when the industry capitalizes on a criminal persona? And do record execs have the juice to back Bobby up when things get too hot? Content Advisory: This story contains strong language and the mention of drug use and guns. Sensitive listeners, please be advised. Be sure to visit Louder Than A Riot to hear Part 2 and 3 of Bobby Shmurda’s story and listen to more incredible episodes. Follow the show on Twitter @LouderThanARiot and subscribe! To hear the music in this episode, check out the Louder Than A Riot playlists on Apple Music & Spotify. Louder Than A Riot is hosted by NPR Music's Rodney Carmichael and Sidney Madden, this podcast is invested in power from all angles — the power the music industry wields over artists, the power of institutional forces that marginalize communities of color, the power of the prison industrial complex and the power dynamics deep-rooted in the rap game. STREAM or DOWNLOAD On this freakish investigation Mista Montana and Menace do this: Rap's favourite uncle, Uncle Murda vents his disgust at the lack of masculinity that exists in Hip Hop in 2014 and plugs his latest mixtape "Ain't Nothing Sweet", which sees the introduction of his crew GMG. We also touch on his departure from Epic Records, Chris Lighty's influence, his Pawn shop advertisement, Being compared to BIG by Nas, weirdo Rap, Trinidad James, ambitions of total industry domination and more. Fresh off the recent release of "Brownsville Jesus" we are joined by Maffew Ragazino to travel through his colourful career to date and talk future projects, which will include both a mixtape and EP's, one of which being a collaboration with frequent collaborator Frank The Butcher.  We also talk about his interest in the element of surprise, appearing in The Source's unsigned hype column, working with Pete Cannon and how his ode to Dipset "Dipset forever" initially started as a joke. An enthused DJ Paul joins us from his sleeping bag to discuss his new group project Da Mafia 6 and its latest member actor Sharon Stone. If this wasn't enough we also talk about the tragic passing of Lord Infamous and the future of his remaining unheard verses. Don't *ahem* sleep on this interview. Possibly our shortest but BEST interview to date! Exile joins us alongside Johaz in the form of their new group Dag Savage to explore their new album "E&J" as well as reflect upon both their careers, the chemistry in which they both share and future projects, which includes a potential sequel to "E&J", a new Blu and Exile album, 2 new Emanon projects  ,a Dirty Science album and the highly anticipated Fashawn and Exile album , which Exile confirms is finished. DJ 7L joins us from the Get-On-Down-Records office to discuss the unique labels operation, history and stream of quality re-releases, which include the super dope re-issue's of "Ironman" , "Liquid Swords", "Illmatic" but to name just a few! We also talk future re-release's and releases such as "'93 Til Infinity", the  possibilities of a 15th anniversary re-release of his & Esoteric's classic "Speaking Real Worlds", Czarface 2,  Chuck D being named official ambassador of Record Store day and so much more!
