Stevie Wonder's Pastime Paradise is a socially conscious track from his critically acclaimed 1976 album Songs in the Key of Life. Produced by Wonder himself, the song features a unique orchestration with a choir and a haunting melody driven by synthesizers. It tackles themes of social injustice and fleeting dreams, making it one of Wonder's most politically charged songs. The track gained further recognition when Coolio famously interpolated it for his 1995 hit Gangsta's Paradise, earning Grammy success. Bow Wow's Like You, featuring Ciara, was released in 2005 as part of his fourth studio album Wanted. Produced by Jermaine Dupri and Bryan-Michael Cox, the song is a smooth R&B/hip-hop ballad detailing a deep romantic connection. It became a major hit, peaking at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the Hot Rap Songs chart. The track helped cement Bow Wow's transition from a child star to a serious artist in the industry. Everyone knows that there will be highs and lows in life; however, the mindset of ‘progress is a process' will help you navigate your pivots. My conversation with Free the Vision helps frame highs, lows, momentum and keeping the focus on progress. More about Free: Free Warren, creatively known as Free The Vision, is a creative director and tv producer that lives at the intersection of music, storytelling, and live experiences. He is a world traveler driven by curiosity and the inner workings of culture. Free is originally from New Jersey, and raised in Atlanta, GA where he got his start as the innovator behind music videos for notable artists like Tyrese and Birdman, which landed him in the world of production. He has directed commercial campaigns for the Mark Zuckerberg Foundation in addition to spirit brands such as Tito's and Jack Daniels. Free has produced for networks that include BET, WeTv, AMC and ALLBLK. However his artistic journey has always been quite unique. Free started his creative consulting and production company, Free 3 Creative as a means to serve as a vision architect for strategy and development. One of the many things that has set him apart is his talent reflecting that of a marketing chameleon building 360 experiences into his work. This distinct skill has afforded him the ability to move beyond just the art of visual storytelling and into a world of developing the roll out executions for artist releases as well as consulting record labels (UMG's Cinematic, Slip-N-Slide). As an intentional builder of relationships and community, Free began to bridge his love for artistry and experience by producing live music events and partnering with global brands like Soho House. Taking his wealth of industry connections, he began to construct platforms for artists to perform and touch their audiences in intimately impactful spaces. Free's signature events, “Turn Up the Volume” and “On the Mic,” have given artists like Coco Jones, Eric Bellinger, India Shawn and Grammy winning and multi-platinum producers Bryan Michael Cox and Kosine the opportunity to perform to sold out crowds. Free The Vision is a multifaceted talent that exercises all of his creative prowess. He is the author of three published book titles, Fragment Reality, Hypocrites Know Best and Sh!t I Learned in Route to 30, and was named “Top Influencer to Work With” by Huffington Post. He relentlessly strives to unify the worlds of storytelling and experience. As a tv producer of shows like Social Society, he materializes his passion for amplifying Black culture and bringing their narratives to the forefront. There is no space or team that Free The Vision encounters that he does not leave positively impacted. He is a vision architect that insistently sets his mission on bringing the world creativity that inspires and shows the multiplicity of those who look like him. Free The Vision is beyond a moniker, it is a calling.

The brilliant, genre-morphing jazz, hip-hop and R&B artist (and 4x Grammy winner) Robert Glasper reflects on important early moments in his creative evolution: developing his skills at performing arts school in Houston alongside fellow talents like Beyonce and songwriter/producer Bryan-Michael Cox, honing his craft with encouragement from modern greats like Roy Hargrove and Christian McBride during his years studying at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York, collaborating with his college classmate Bilal as his music director, and getting involved with the late 90s Neo Soul scene led by artists such as The Roots and Erykah Badu. Glasper also talks about his creative process, and how he approaches the collaborations in his phenomenal Black Radio album series, which began with the Grammy-winning Black Radio in 2012. (That LP became the first album ever to debut in the top 10 on four different genre charts simultaneously — a feat repeated by Black Radio 2 the following year.) On February 25th, Glasper will release the highly anticipated Black Radio 3, which features appearances by his frequent collaborator Terrace Martin, Q-Tip, Esperanza Spalding, H.E.R., BJ The Chicago Kid, Common, India.Arie, Ant Clemons, and more. He is also nominated for two 2022 Grammys, for Best Progressive R&B album (for his Dinner Party collaboration with Martin, Kamasi Washington and 9th Wonder) and Best Traditional R&B Performance (for “Born Again” with Leon Bridges.)

Rodgers managed two separate centers and then moved to Atlanta to continue her work at the Georgia Department of Education in the Communication Department. After becoming accustomed to life in Atlanta, Rodgers and her husband Jason Ikeem Rodgers, a classically trained musician and conductor, decided to start Orchestra Noir. “Orchestra Noir is the Rosetta Stone of orchestral music,” said Rodgers. “It bridges traditional classical music like Beethoven with music from our African American culture.” When Orchestra Noir was first created, it only had seven musicians. The group hosted an event to gain interest and support. The first event only saw 100 people but continued to grow every gathering. The second event brought in over 300 people. By the end of the first year, Orchestra Noir was able to sell out Center Stage to over 800 people. At this point, the group was collaborating Bryan-Michael Cox, Grammy-winning producer and DJ. Cox is responsible for producing albums of well-known artists including Usher, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige and Toni Braxton. Currently, Orchestra Noir is composed of 40 musicians. Over the past three years, Orchestra Noir has collaborated with many popular artists and music groups, including hip-hop stars Migos and Two Chainz. The group also appeared in a music video. Not only does Orchestra Noir perform at the local venue, Center Stage in Atlanta, but the group also works events such as weddings, galas, parties and anniversaries. Orchestra Noir performed at Cardi B's birthday party, as well as an album release party for TI. The group also appeared on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” OWN Network's “Greenleaf,” Steven Spielberg's “Amazing Stories” and BET's “Boomerang.” Orchestra Noir is responsible for a “side-by-side” program. This program offers young student musicians the opportunity to learn alongside musicians in the orchestra. The students attend orchestra practices and sit next to their musical counterparts in the professional orchestra. The entire group then plays as if they are one big orchestra. This allows for the students to learn with the professional musicians in Orchestra Noir. “The kids love it,” said Rodgers. “They feel important and it gives them a whole different experience to music.” To learn more about Orchestra Noir or to find out how to get involved, visit www.OrchestraNoir.com. We start off the podcast talking about some of our first concert experiences as Edd talks about his first Keith Sweat experience and Kyle talks about his first Ashanti experience. Afterwards we talk about taking 90's R&B albums for granted as there were albums that didn't get the love that they should have got. Afterwards we talk about some of the new singles that came out including Marsha Ambrosius, Musiq Soulchild and Sammie. Afterwards we talk about the legacy of Day26 as they celebrate their 10 year anniversary. We also revisit R&B during the late 2000's and try to figure out why people have forgotten about artists that came out during that time period. Afterwards Edd talks about the list he published about the top R&B albums of the 2000's. For our hall of fame discussion, we try to nominate Anita Baker and Tevin Campbell.

Michael Jackson, Usher, Mariah Carey, Jermaine Dupree, Teddy Riley. What do these names have in common? This man right here; Bryan Michael Cox. Not only has he worked with some of the greatest in music to ever live, but he is the first music producer to have appeared on the most TOP BILLBOARD hits consistently for years. We spoke about that time he was in the studio with Usher, and Michael Jackson literally called the studio to "check up on what they were doing". We had an amazing conversation about MUSIC PUBLISHING, and the various pros and cons of signing one (amongst many other topics of discussion). What an honor to have such an amazing talent bless us for Episode 30. You're doing yourself a disservice by not listening to this one!
