Crédits de l'épisode :- "Crie hie" (Eugene Fredy / Jérôme Rastello)- "Shake it off" (Mariah Carey, Jermaine Dupri, Bryan-Michael Cox, Johnta Austin)- "Get your number" feat. Can you shine light on the dark parts of your life?Jessica Simpson's memoir, Open Book, is a raw, unfiltered truth from a woman who spent years living her life in the public eye while hiding her deepest struggles. In this heartfelt conversation, my friend, Lizzie, and I unpack Jessica's journey from a pastor's daughter with childhood trauma to pop princess to billion-dollar business mogul. Plus, we explore the profound impact these experiences (plus childhood trauma) had on her identity and relationships.Jessica's memoir reveals devastating childhood experiences including sexual abuse that went unaddressed by her parents, creating patterns that would follow her throughout life. We examine how the entertainment industry shaped her from age 17, when Columbia Records executive, Tommy Mottola, demanded she lose fifteen pounds – beginning a twenty-year battle with diet pills and body image. The discussion turns to her relationships, particularly her marriage to Nick Lachey and the reality show "Newlyweds" that transformed them into "actors in their own lives," and her emotionally manipulative relationship with John Mayer. What makes Jessica's story so compelling isn't just her celebrity status, but her remarkable self-awareness about her struggles with addiction, body image, and seeking validation. Her journey toward sobriety and self-acceptance resonates whether you've followed her career or not. We chat about the incredible fashion empire Jessica built that focused on her commitment to serving women of all body types... even as the media scrutinized her own physical appearance. This episode celebrates Jessica's resilience and hard-won wisdom. Her powerful realization that "we need to own our weakness, our hurt, our pain and say it out loud" serves as inspiration for anyone working to overcome their past. Have you read Open Book? Today on another encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to musician Jon Klages, grandson of musician and Hi-Fi proponent and record label owner Enoch Light. Our conversation with Jon began with understanding just who his grandfather was. A classically trained musician, Enoch founded his first group, Enoch Light & His Orchestra & later Enoch Light and the Light Brigade before World War II. Wildly popular in upper class New York society, Light went on to found one of the most unique independent record labels, well, ever. Vinyl collectors today will know Light's Command Records & Project 3 firstly for its unique, minimalist artwork from renowned artist Josel Albers. From classical to pop to Space Age Bachelor Pop to popular soundtrack hits and more, Light was nothing if not proficient. From albums like Persuasive Percussion to The Private Life of a Private Eye, Lights albums were visually stunning first and foremost. But take a listen to any of his albums from composers as varied as Doc Severinson, Dick Hyman, Tommy Mottola & the landmark album from The Free Design, the albums were recorded for the best audio fidelity available. The albums sound terrific. We discuss this with Jon & loved hearing about how his own mother played a role in all these recordings too. If you love the Moog, horns, Bossa Nova and more mid-sixties exotica, you must find these albums for your collection. We also talk to Jon about his experiences in the studio with his grandfather as well as his own recordings. Part of the fabled Hoboken indie scene of the 1980s, Jon release a new album in 2021, Fabulous Twilight and has a new album coming in 2025 as well. We discuss how Jon became a singer/songwriter, how his passion for being around music led to a career in it and much more. Plus, we hear much about Jon's father, a seven-time Emmy winner for lighting design who worked with everyone from Muhammad Ali to Ernie Kovacs. This is one episode you do not want to miss and it's happening right now. Take a listen to the Rarified Heir Podcast with Jon Klages, right now.
In the final episode of our Thalía journey, we explore her fairy tale ending—and everything that came after. Now celebrating 24 years of marriage with Tommy Mottola, her life seems like the perfect conclusion to a telenovela-worthy story. But even legends face hardships: tragedy struck her family, and illness tried to slow down our queen. Through it all, Thalía has remained forever young—not just in her looks or talent, but in her fearless authenticity. She reminds us that we can always be unapologetically ourselves. There was no artist bigger than Mariah Carey in the 1990s. She was the Artist of the Decade, according to Billboard, the World Music Awards' Female Artist of the Millennium, and the owner of 15 number one singles in the ‘90s alone. And that doesn't even include “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” arguably her biggest song ever. That song didn't become a #1 hit until 25 years after its release. And it has continued to top the Billboard Hot 100 every year since. On the surface, Mariah was on top of the world, but as the new millennium struck, Mariah was going through some changes, both privately and professionally. After years of trying she was finally exiting her tumultuous marriage to record executive Tommy Mottola. Despite filing for a separation in 1997, it wasn't until the end of 2000 that Mariah was granted her divorce. At the same time she was leaving a bad situation with her label Columbia, where her husband was the Chairman and CEO. As she was gearing up for the release of Glitter, her feature film debut, Mariah reportedly suffered a physical and emotional breakdown. Glitter's theatrical release was delayed three weeks as a result, but it didn't really matter - nothing could have saved the film from the savage critics, who called it “heroically bad” and “infinitely mockable.” Glitter became one of the decade's biggest box office flops, winning Mariah Worst Actress at the Golden Raspberry Awards, aka the Razzies. The film's failure didn't help Glitter's soundtrack either. Her first release for new label Virgin, Glitter was neither a hit with fans or critics. One writer called it an "utter meltdown -- the pop equivalent of Chernobyl." Mariah's official follow up to Glitter came out in December 2002. Charmbracelet was her opportunity to make a fresh start, a “new lease on life,” she called it. Unfortunately, Charmbracelet didn't exactly get things back on track for Mariah. While the album was one of her highest debuts on the Billboard Albums chart, sales dropped off quickly. Then at the beginning of 2004, famed music executive L.A. Reid left his job at Arista to become the new chairman and CEO of The Island Def Jam Music Group. This would prove to be a pivotal moment for both Reid, who was forced out of Arista following the merger of Sony and BMG, and Mariah, who was in need of some career rehabilitation. Reid had just orchestrated a career makeover for Usher, who was riding atop the Billboard Hot 100 with his hit “Yeah!” - With that song, Usher had become the biggest artist on the planet, and Reid was looking to do the same for Mariah. The first step was to set her up with the right producer. Enter Jermaine Dupri, Usher's longtime mentor who co-wrote and produced Mariah's 1996 #1 hit “Always Be My Baby.” More collaborations followed and Mariah was hooking up with the Neptunes, Kanye West, Snoop Dogg, and more. In November 2004, Mariah presented an album's worth of songs to L.A. Reid, but Reid felt she needed a few more bangers. Mariah went back to Atlanta to work with Jermaine Dupri again and guess what? They created some magic. In just two days they came up with two songs that would end up being her album's first two singles: “It's Like That” and “We Belong Together.” This is the True story of Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" with newly unearthed audio from Mariah Carey. Also contains audio from Genius' Interview with Mariah, Released November 16, 2018.

All we want for Christmas is this: Mariah Carey's notorious film vehicle is the subject of Pop Screen's festive episode. Equally reviled and unfortunate, it's the tale of a foster child who grows up into an aspiring singer, and whose rise to fame is, shall we say, subtly patterned on Carey's own career. Its soundtrack album was released on 9/11, which stymied its commercial potential. That inspired a #JusticeforGlitter campaign many years later; the film was less fortunate. On this year's Pop Screen Christmas special, David rejoins Graham to talk about the many unlikely couples in this film, the almost surreally undercharacterised friends of Carey's Billie, and how Carey's divorce from Tommy Mottola may have forced this film into its 1980s setting. We also discuss Carey's triple-threat legacy: her world-class voice, her current status as Queen of Christmas, and the "I don't know her" gif. In the first of three new episodes on pop icon Mariah Carey, DJ Louie is joined by The New School's Dr. Brittnay L. Proctor to discuss Mariah's origin story and early career. They begin with her upbringing on Long Island as the product of a biracial marriage, her first forays into the music industry as a demo singer and background vocalist and her chance meeting with future husband Tommy Mottola which resulted in her smash self-titled debut album, home to four consecutive number one hits. They then discuss her pivot towards Black dance styles on her sophomore album, Emotions, her juggernaut, adult-contemporary-leaning third album, 1993's Music Box, her Christmas classic "All I Want for Christmas is You" and finally, her pivotal 1995 album Daydream, a blockbuster which saw Mariah defying Mottola's influence on her life and music, embracing hip hop and R&B into her sound and paving the way for her future as an artist and woman. Join us next week for Part 2 where we will be talking Mariah's middle period, beginning with 1997's Butterfly through 2002's Charmbracelet. First the Fat Boys break up.... The Fat Boys are one of those rap groups from the 80's that sometimes get mistakenly branded as a novelty or gimmick act. Nothing could be further from the truth. The Fat Boys were among the first wave of stellar rap crews to barnstorm the nation and bring the street poetry of New York to middle America. Central to the Fat Boys success was rapper/producer Prince Markie Dee. After the Fat Boys disbanded Markie Dee went on to have an incredible production career crafting hip hop flavored R&B joints for J-Lo, Mariah Carey, and Mary J. Blige (you have perhaps heard the song Real Love yeah?) He also had a couple of slept on solo projects in the 90s. Back in 2018 he was kind enough to hop on the phone with the dad bods and talk about the wildness of the Freshfest Tours, having a 3 movie deal with Warner Bros, and being signed by industry titan Tommy Mottola. Prince Markie Dee tragically passed in 2021. We present this interview to honor his memory and musical legacy.

L.A. Derfor tager podcasten udgangspunkt i Bob Dylans andet album, ”The Freewheeling Bob Dylan”.

Harlan continues the Sole Free conversation with series this week with one of the music industry's “native sons,” Cory Rooney. Raised in Jamaica, Queens, New York by hit-making parents Herb Rooney and Brenda Reid of ‘60s group The Exciters, Cory's own love for music was reinforced at an early age. Cory Rooney has an undeniable track record in the music business having created a historic legacy. Cory Rooney's albums have sold over 100 million copies worldwide with many exceeding the 1 million records-sold mark.Cory's star began to rise at Uptown Records in the late '80s where he wrote and produced major hits like Real Love and Sweet Thing for the then-unknown “R&B Icon” Mary J. Blige. His success at Uptown drew the attention of Sony Music chief Tommy Mottola, who brought Cory to Sony where he served as Senior Vice President of Sony Music Entertainment. Among his many responsibilities, Cory was charged with identifying and developing new talent, guiding the careers of established artists, producing and executive producing projects in a wide variety of genres, composing material for new and established artists, and overseeing an array of writers and producers.During his tenure at Sony Music Entertainment, Cory wrote and pro- duced a slew of hit singles, including Jennifer Lopez's Ain't It Funny, I'm Real, and Jenny From the Block. He also worked with other multi-platinum artists including Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, Marc Anthony, Jessica Simpson, Brian McKnight, Mandy Moore, Aretha Franklin, and many more. Cory has also guided multiple movie soundtracks including: Men in Black, Runaway Bride, The Nutty Professor, and Charlie's Angels — for which he was nominated for a GRAMMY for writing and producing that year's #1 hit single, Destiny's Child's Independent Women Part 1. The song was later named the 18th most successful song of the 2000s, on the Billboard Hot 100 Songs of the Decade. Cory's success transcend the business world. He is a beloved husband and father whose son Jaedon has entered the entertainment world who's appeared at many events and comic cons with his anime brand Zala the Cursed. In addition to stories of Cory's career he and son Jaedon talk with Harlan about the importance of family in their lives. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

It's “believe all women,” until women point a finger at a male figure you like. The Depp v. Heard trial took over every corner of the internet from social media bots to YouTubers and TikTokers, much thanks to misinformation spreading from the Alt-Right and their propensity to meme-ify news moments to their advantage. The cultural impact of celebrity abuse cases, especially Depp v. Heard, will set a severe precedent for years to come. We've seen this over the years: Mariah Carey and Tommy Mottola, Kesha and Dr Luke. More recently we've seen the highly publicized shooting of Megan Thee Stallion allegedly by Tory Lanez. And now Marilyn Manson is pulling out all the stops to continue his abuse towards Evan Rachel Wood in another lawsuit. All to say, the internet has been having a field day with female survivors of abuse at the hands of powerful men. We're joined by culture writer Aja Romano to look deep into the cultural impact of celebrity abuse trials and just how far from the truth the conversation can go when the dark sides of the internet come out to play. In this episode we pay tribute to the biggest music star of the 1990's, Mariah Carey. We talk about her childhood & her dangerous relationship & marriage to Tommy Mottola
The meaning of life? Easy. But the Meaning of Mariah? That's heavy lifting. The Guinness Book of World records refers to Mariah Carey as the Songbird Supreme. She has a five-octave range and can sing into the seventh octave. Her "All I Want for Christmas Is You" is the 11th best-selling single in modern music, and only The Beatles have more number one hits. She's also performed for a Libyan dictator, been arrested in her own home, barely escaped the sinister walls of Tommy Mottola's labyrinth prison, and is probably Marilyn Monroe reincarnated. Become Lambily with Martha and Christian and follow the trail to Mariah--if you get lost, just keep your eyes on the glitter.

During the summer of 1976, Cory Daye‘s voice wafted through the bamboo forests of New York's Fire Island like an intoxicating fragrance. As the lead vocalist and co-founder of Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band, she beckoned the island's dwellers to untold pleasures while the group's self-titled debut stirred dancers into sweaty, salty abandon. Boardwalks seldom pulsed with such a bewitching beat.Fire Island was worlds away from the South Bronx where Daye first met composer/arranger Stony Browder, Jr. (guitar/piano) and his brother, lyricist August Darnell (bass). Drummer Mickey Sevilla and vibe master “Sugar Coated” Andy Hernandez (aka Coati Mundi) helped crystallize the group's musical aesthetic, which had morphed from R&B into a blend of big band, soul, Latin, jazz, dance, and pop. Produced by Four Seasons tunesmith Sandy Linzer, Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band (1976) brought the grandeur of swing-era bandstands to the discotheque, melding wry social commentary with classic Hollywood romanticism. “Everybody's favorite album is Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band on RCA,” critic Vince Aletti wrote in his “Disco File” column for Record World. “It's this summer's major surprise hit not only because three cuts are eminently danceable (‘Sour and Sweet', ‘Cherchez La Femme', and ‘I'll Play the Fool'), but because the group's fabulously eclectic sound — drawing on several decades of American pop music from big band jazz to doo-wop soul to sophisticated disco, full of sly musical quotes — is so fresh and appealing” (7 August 1976).Aletti would later declare Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band the “Most Essential Disco Album of 1976”, while the Los Angeles Times named Savannah Band “the hottest disco act in the country” (26 November 1976). Even Aletti's peers in the rock press cheered the group's arrival. “It's a pleasure to admit that their music is a fresh pop hybrid with its own rhythmic integrity, and that its sophistication is a lot brighter and more lively than most of the organic bullshit making it to the rock stage in the mid-'70s,” Robert Christgau noted in the Village Voice.Rolling Stone published its own rave review of Savannah Band's debut. “The highest moments introduce a genuinely surrealistic disco whose adventurous use of bitonality and electronic sound effects stands in absolute contrast to the recent disco market's cynical prefabrication of oldies,” wrote Stephen Holden. “‘I'll Play the Fool', ‘Cherchez La Femme', and especially ‘Sour and Sweet', are group originals that literally explode the genre with their brittle scintillating audacity” (23 September 1976).With a sound that signaled disco's penchant for innovation, Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band supplanted the Bee Gees' “You Should Be Dancing” from number one on Billboard‘s “National Disco Action Top 30” in October 1976. A month later, “Cherchez La Femme” debuted on the Hot 100 where it would peak at #27 and introduce one of the era's most indelible opening lines — “Tommy Mottola lives on the road” — to the airwaves. The album itself was certified gold and earned the group a GRAMMY nomination for “Best New Artist”.In '79 Cory Daye released her solo album, “Cory and Me”. Rolling Stone, November '79 - Cory delivers a vocal performance that's direct and elusive, girlishly simple and musically sophisticated, sexy without being huff-and-puffy. When Daye makes her entrance in any song, it's like the sun breaking through a bank of dark clouds. What song had the longest journey ever to become #1? It's Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas is You. #BehindTheChristmasHits is Presented by Pizza Pizza! It was 1993 and Mariah’s then husband and head of her record company, Tommy Mottola, began strategizing with his team about her next career move. To everyone’s surprise, they decided a Christmas album was the way to go. Mariah couldn’t understand why. Her most recent album, Music Box, had been her biggest success yet - the album sold more than 28 million copies worldwide. An album of Christmas standards felt like a project for way further down the road and not for someone who had only been a pop star for about 3 years. She thought they were way off with this, but the idea eventually tapped into something that had been present in Mariah since she was a child. Her Christmas spirit. Mariah LOVES Christmas. Something she credits her mom for in those early years. Mariah eventually came around, but instead of just doing covers of familiar songs, Mariah wanted to write something new, and now suddenly, the record label was nervous... but you try telling Mariah Carey “no". Tommy Mottola wanted something more uptempo – something “rock and roll” like Phil Spector did with Darlene Love and the Ronettes back in 1963. Mariah has said her true of love of Christmas comes from the hope that’s in the holiday. And that’s where the lyrics of this next song would come from. She began to make a list of all the things she had thought of since childhood but then flipped those feelings into lyrics about lost love. It started as a Christmas song that turned into a love song and then back into a Christmas song. Mariah says she was in her upstate NY home and put on her copy of It’s a Wonderful Life and blasted it through the house. She went into a room where she kept a Casio keyboard. Mariah is very honest about this – she says she’s a terrible piano player, but sometimes happy accidents happen…and one did here. She kind of stumbled on the melody and chord progression and recorded it on a cassette recorder. Mariah’s account of how the song was written differs from her former songwriting partner, Walter Afanasieff. They had worked together on every album of hers to this point. Mariah told Entertainment Weekly that when she brought the song to Walter, she had already written most of it. Walter says he and Mariah were actually in the room together while he was “plucking it out on the piano.” Walter’s version is that he took care of the melody while Mariah worked out the lyrics. Unfortunately, the two had a falling out over 20 years ago and haven’t spoken since. When it was recorded in the summer of ‘94, Mariah had every square inch of the studio decorated. Trees, ornaments, candles, lights up on the windows – even the temperature was turned way down. Mariah wanted the song to feel like something she could’ve grown up listening to – something you couldn’t help but be happy listening to. No band actually plays on the song. It was entirely constructed on Walter’s computer. The only things that were added were the voices of Mariah & her back-up singers. It’s rare that a song grows in popularity almost every single year. After it was released on October 28 1994, All I Want for Christmas is You peaked at #13 on the Billboard Hot 100. On December 16, 2019, it finally reached the top of that chart, setting a record for the longest trip ever to get to #1. It was also the first time a Christmas song has been #1 on the Hot 100 since The Chipmunk Song in 1958. It also became Mariah’s first #1 hit since 2008 and her 19th overall. And it’s the biggest-selling Christmas song on digital platforms ever. Mariah told the NY Times that after picking it apart for years, she’s finally at a place where she can enjoy it. As for Walter, despite the falling out with Mariah, he pinches himself every year when the song becomes a hit all over again. “My ex-wives, my children and my grandchildren are enjoying a lot of nice things because of that song.” Whose version of who wrote what and where is closer to the truth? It probably doesn’t matter – Mariah and Walter share equal song writing credit and unlike some other Christmas classics, no lawsuits have ever been filed over it. Mariah calls co-writing this song one of her greatest achievements. That’s not hyperbole. Unless you’re old enough to remember Bing Crosby’s White Christmas when it was brand new in 1942 – there isn’t a Christmas song since that’s done what Mariah Carey’s has. Behind The Christmas Hits is Presented by Pizza Pizza! Mariah Carey Merry Christmas: Columbia Records 1994
