Long story short, I was a disgruntled cubicle monkey who followed the rules believing they would make me happy. Spoiler alert: They did not. ~ Shereen Thor Did you have a life plan? Most of us did. We thought if we chose an “acceptable” career path, did the “right” things and followed all of the rules, life would be grand. Except it doesn't always work out that way. For many of us, “acceptable” career paths and life choices don't make us happy, usually because the roads are rigid and don't allow us to stretch to be who we really are. Yet, making a decision (and then sticking with it) to deviate from the “right” path can seem impossible, especially when we believe we will be disappointing those who see success differently. Shereen Thor, former cubicle monkey, standup comic and entrepreneur, discovered first-hand that making choices to fulfill someone else's idea of success rarely ends well. As she began to feel she was abandoning her own life, Shereen tuned into her inner rebel and did the unthinkable–she left corporate America to become a standup comic, living happily ever after…or not. As Shereen notes, “You are going to experience hard things whether you are on the right path or not, but the right path makes the challenges worth it.” Here at brilliantly Resilient, we know that life is ever-evolving, always offering a mix of good and bad. But when you choose to live with a Brilliantly Resilient, values-based mindset, the rough spots are a little less rough–and always come with a lesson to help move you forward. Tune in to hear more of Shereen's wisdom on this week's episode of the Brilliantly Resilient podcast. And be sure to listen for these additional bits of brilliance: Standup comedy was terrifying, but I wanted a different life. I was tired of abandoning myself. One of the rules I was breaking was that negative emotions are bad and that I'm bad if I'm experiencing negative emotions. We have to make more space for the gray. We have to live a values-aligned life instead of abandoning ourselves to what we're supposed to want. What does your heart tell you? Don't worry about fixing everything. You don't need to be fixed; your worth is inherent. There's nothing ‘wrong.' Don't shrink to fit for anything or anyone–ever. I am unwilling to be treated badly–ever. Let's be Brilliantly Resilient together! XO, Mary Fran & Kristin
In the latest episode of the Empowerography Podcast, my guest is Shereen Thor. Hey! I'm Shereen and here are all my dirty secrets lol. Long story short, I was a disgruntled cubicle monkey who followed the rules believing they would make me happy. Spoiler alert: They did not. Realizing that white picket fences are sometimes made of B.S., my inner rebel got woke, broke out of the 9-5 and became a stand-up comic/entrepreneur. Finally living my truth was addicting – until I went into debt, got burnt out and fell into a depression. (That's the thing about life. It's not a straight shot to the top – even when you're ‘following your bliss'.) Along the way, I met and fell in love with my now-husband. Our relationship helped me identify, work through, and recover from some deep-rooted codependency issues (fun!) as we built a life and family of our own. And while I initially resisted the pull of motherhood, embracing it and accepting that I needed some support (hello, it takes a village!) turned out to be the medicine I needed. Today, I'm living a life that not only honors my soul, but makes me damn happy and fulfilled. And while it took massive debt, two high-risk pregnancies, a hospitalization and postpartum depression to wake my ass up, I eventually slayed my dragons and wrote my own rulebook. Helping you do the same lights me up every day. Fair warning – once you wake your inner rebel up, they'll never go back to sleep. (And trust me, that's a good thing! We want you fully awake.) In this episode we discuss TEDx, standup comedy, smashing societal conditioning, tuning into and listening to the language of your soul and coaching. We're all born with factory settings installed in our brains. There's an expectation that success is a narrowly defined thing, and that there's a specific formula we all must follow: go to school, get good grades, enroll in a good college, get a degree, sign on with a good company and work a steady 9-5 every year until you retire. People call it the American dream. But that's not the American dream. In fact, it's a trap. For the vast majority of people, it's no longer a viable path to the life of success and meaning that we all want. The intro that plays at the beginning of every episode of this show talks about the system that was created by the people with money, power, and influence. Those factory settings are part of that system. Shereen Thor is a prime example of someone who rebelled against those factory settings and abandoned the predetermined path for her life. It was a long and chaotic road from daughter of a divorced immigrant mother to people-pleasing corporate cubicle monkey to victim of workplace sexual harassment to independent comedienne. But she ultimately rebelled against all of those labels, and finally found her calling as a life coach and personal development consultant. She's the founder of Awaken the Rebel, a professional coaching and training company that helps people break the rules, fulfill their purpose, and build an extraordinary lifestyle by design. Shereen also hosts the Awaken the Rebel podcast, a hilarious dose of practical wisdom, spirituality, philosophy, entrepreneurship talk, and relationship advice: https://awakentherebel.com/podcast/ Finally, make sure you download her Happiness Cheatsheet: https://awakentherebel.com/cheatsheet/ This episode is brought to you by our sponsors: NetSuite Boll & Branch (Code: Stapleton) Bright Cellars

This week I want to introduce you to a rebel renaissance woman Dr. Corinne Devin. She is not only a doctor and a naval officer, but she is also Ms. United States! Talk about dynamic! I love it when a woman refuses to be one thing and expresses all sides of herself. She has lived in over 30 countries and does tons of service work mentoring and investing in youth. She lives a life full of adventure, service, discipline and fulfillment. She is beautiful, inspiring & bad ass. She has served our United States Navy in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Listen in and hear how this woman has conquered many worlds and how she did it. This podcast will help you believe that everything is really possible and inspire you to find your compass, draw your map and put on your crown ladies. Hell yeah. In this episode you will hear:-About Dr. Corinne Devin’s inspiring journey from dental school to pageants. -How to determine what sacrifices you are willing to make to get your ultimate goals. -How to potentially become a dentist and not be in 300k debt with a little help from the US Navy. -How coaching can help you build a life you would have never dreamed you could on your own -Why Dr. Corinne Devin decided to take the daring route of Navy to pageant. Was it a dare? lol -How creating a family away from home is quite possibly the best way to be an adventurer. Quotes: “Everyone that's listening is totally jealous.” - Shereen Thor “My dad was a dentist in the Navy. But if you told me at eight years old that I would be deployed and doing his job, I'd be like, no, you're crazy.” - Dr. Corinne Devin “Only 18% of United States Navy is made up of female officers today.” - Dr. Corinne Devin “It’s about making choices, deciding what's important to you, what your dreams are, and what you're willing to do.” - Dr. Corinne Devin “One thing that I would tell them to do is look for a coach. I would look at getting someone who is going to put a mirror in front of them, hold them accountable, make them do things that they maybe just didn't feel like that the confidence to do or the support to do.” - Dr. Corinne Devin “So, I think it's having someone dig deep and having someone that can hold them accountable - because it can't be your family and it can't be your friends. Because, guess what, they all are all selfish they want you for themselves or they want you to do what they want to do. You need someone who's going to be completely separate and who does not have any of those biases.” - Dr. Corinne Devin Resources: Dr. Corinne Devin on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/drcorinnedevin/ www.awakentherebel.com (take the quiz – What Drives you?)
Today’s episode is all about something that will support you tremendously in making progress. We often see two options in black or white and feel stuck trying to choose between the lesser of two evils. But if you cultivate a Growth Mindset, we can often see solutions that are outside the box and move our lives forward. This episode is about how you can cultivate a growth mindset to experience more mastery in your life. In this episode you will hear: How to have better outcomes and results. How you can become stuck in a mindset that no longer serves you. About out of the box thinking An example from a real coaching session where a client was stuck in black and white thinking and how we moved them forward Questions: Is there an area of your life right now: where are you stopping yourself from moving forward, because it's kind of bumping up against a certain limiting belief you have? And how could you shift that paradigm to grow? Quotes:“You either stop, go or grow.” Shereen Thor “When you grow, what you're needing to do is to adopt a new belief, or a new mindset.” Shereen Thor Resources: www.awakentherebel.com (take the quiz – What Kind of Rebel are You?)

Today’s show is a rebel spotlight with my bad ass client, colleague and friend Carlo Moss. He is literally the coolest (which makes me cool by association mwahahaha). The majority of people would recognize him from a YouTube show that he started called “Most Popular Girls in School” which is basically South Park meets Mean Girls with stop motion barbies. It was one of THE biggest scripted series’ on YouTube and has 150 million views and counting wtf?! That’s insane. Get a glimpse into how Carlo has carved a path for himself in the creative world busting against the 9 to 5 grind to share his unique gifts and talents with the world. He also shares about his recent discovery that he has ADHD and how that has helped him navigate his career. Enjoy! In this episode you will hear: -How Carlo beat the entertainment grind and found his truelove for writing vss acting. -About Carlo’s big shift at 25 years old, and how this shift was the catalyst to his highly successful top YouTube show with now 150 million views for his creation, “Most Popular Girls.” -How Carlo and I got connected so that I could help him fuel his rebellious and amazing career. -How to focus on your true gifts rather than getting caught up with all the small to do’s. -How Carlo’s intuition has guided his life and career. -How Carlo struggled with anxiety and where that led him on his life path. -How Carlo had a breakthrough after learning he had ADHD and some signs to know if you may have it too. Quotes: “I found myself for the majority of the time doing things I didn’t love and that I wasn’t the best at and once I hit that realization it was a natural pause point.” -Carlo Mos “‘I’m very hippy dippy so I am going to throw around words like “universe” but I feel very much like the universe was giving me a big kick in that ass to think differently about my life and what it could be.” -Carlo Moss .” “I was spending all my time doing the work in the business that has to be done to keep the doors open, but it wasn’t even keeping the doors open.” Carlo Moss “When you are going into a pitch don’t tell them how many views, you’re going to have on YouTube tell them about how the characters are going to interact with each other, because that can be a big mistake that I fully made.” Carlo Moss “If your career is not your whole life, what are the other pieces and what do they look like?” Carlo Moss “When you are going into a pitch don’t tell them how many views, you’re going to have on YouTube tell them about how the characters are going to interact with each other, because that can be a big mistake that I fully made.” Carlo Moss “If your career is not your whole life, what are the other pieces and what do they look like?” Carlo Moss “I really came to terms with anytime I try to fit myself into another lane or one particular box or one particular title the universe slaps me on the face and says noooo, thats not you!” Carlo Moss “One would argue that you have obviously done really well for your life, you knew what you wanted to do in college, you changed course when you understood what you liked better, you met an amazing woman and you were at a turning point when I met you, but one could argue maybe you didn’t really need a coach?” Shereen Thor “That’s the beautiful thing about creativity and inspiration. I feel like they are symbiotic, and they build off of each other -being around you inspires me to be creative and that’s just a ripple effect; it just keeps going.” Shereen Thor “I know that coaching has 100% changed my entire life which is why I chose this as my career and I feel like it’s having really cool effect on you (Carlo Moss).” Shereen Thor “I remember after one of our sessions I was talking about my vision for this consulting business and what it could be and I had been sitting in what felt like forever on this idea and I was going alright I need to create a logo, I need to do all the branding for it that’s literally what the company does logos and branding all that kind of stuff so I should probably do it for the company first, so I am sitting there procrastinating on it wanting to do it and knowing I could do it, but sitting there trying to decide on names and kicking those back and forth, unable to land on something and we went in and I gave you a list of names of what I was thinking about, and we zeroed in on something almost immediately and ok, this is the name done. The next day I sat down and was imbued with this amazing energy after our session and then I was able to sit down and say, okay today all you have to do is get all of the logo stuff done so that you can go print a business card and being able to come off of that energy to create was something that I hadn’t felt before, and you (Shereen Thor) pointed me to it.” -Carlo Moss “When we first sat down, you had me point out to you all the things that I wanted my life to be, and now that was 6 or 7 months ago, I would not have imagined that it could have happened that fast and if we hadn’t have had that moment of me being able to lay out what I wanted it to look like, oh SH#t. I had been wanting to move to the beach for the last 12 years, and then that finally happened.” Carlo Moss “Really, we were only coaching you 90 days for you to get going, once you take the ideas out of your head so they are not just tinkering about like a freakin’ pinball machine in there or feeling unrealistic or you are talking yourself out it, you are talking to a human, you are taking them out and that person is writing them down and then emailing them back to you and then you meet with them every month to stay in line with the vision it’s so simple and practical and yet that is exactly what changes your life -you know just really making it real, staying aligned (with coaching) to your true north.” “I remember in our 3rd or 4th session I was thinking this is so cool, this is what you said in our first sessions and now you are doing it!” Shereen Thor “Sometimes we do not celebrate our accomplishments because we are so busy on our treadmills doing our own thing that we don’t even take a minute to look back and go‘oh Sh#t’ we made that thing happen that we said we wanted to do!” Shereen Thor Resources: https://www.youtube.com/user/TheMostPopularGirls Carlo Moss’ Hit Youtube Channel http://www.extracreditstudios.com/carlo-moss Check out Carlo Moss’ Studio https://www.instagram.com/carlo.moss/?hl=en Find Carlo on Instagram www.awakentherebel.com (take the quiz –What Kind of Rebel are You?)

This week's episode is sponsored by Beautycounter. Not only can you help support In Her Voice with any Beautycounter purchase through this link, you might also be able to support your own dreams by joining my Beautycounter team. If this sounds interesting to you, let's chat! Shoot me an email at kelly@kellycovert.com with the subject line "Curious About Beautycounter." Here are a few of the big topics we talked about: Shereen shares what she means when she says inner rebel. Shereen’s message is to all the reformed good girls out there, “It’s time to listen to your inner bad girl.” Shereen’s first big awakening came when she realized she’d adhered to her mother’s expectations. Despite having “everything” Shereen wasn’t fully happy with her life the way it was. A self-help seminar is when Shereen’s views on things turned around. What “Good Girl Syndrome” means to Kelly and Shereen and how it affects others. Kelly shares her story of being a rebel, but also being sure to have good girl tendencies. How parents react to their children’s choices and how they fear for their success. In the past, Kelly has felt that people would like her more if she was good. The ladies discuss the feeling of being abandoned and needing to feel loved. Shereen describes how you can pick back up the pieces after they’ve been abandoned. Morning Pages The Artist’s Way and the self-destructive patterns that often look honorable to the outside world, but it is really crushing your soul. Shereen shares how we all begin to change the meaning of selfish. How to nurture your inner rebel. Once you ask for what you want, the Universe begins to work to bring it to you. How women can nurture and care for themselves. Kelly asks Shereen what her Inner Voice is asking of her today. In Shereen’s Voice: “My work is to support people in awakening the rebel, get in touch with that little hottie in there. See what she really wants.” “Following your truth is actually going to look rebellious or disrespectful.” “I'm not going to do this anymore. I'm going to fully choose to show up in the world as the truth of me, and sometimes that might hurt, but I can take a bullet.” “I learned a pattern of abandoning myself in an effort to please others.” “We need the belonging, we need the love and we also need to feel loved for who we actually are.” “The same way the frog dies a slow death, he doesn't realize that the water is slowly coming to a boil and then dies, I think the same can happen with the awakening. I think you can do a slow awakening where you're not shocking yourself like maniac.” “Women need to learn to self advocate for their spirit, for their soul, for themselves.” “Let it be okay that some people are going to be disappointed and just let it be okay that you're not there for everyone else. Just let it be okay for you to be selfish for a moment.” “We've been socialized to feel bad for being selfish because our role and our value comes from giving and loving and care for everyone else, and that's beautiful.” “If you are selfish you are also giving. You can't be one without the other.” ~ Kelly Covert “Your work is to make sure you do not abandon yourself.” Connect with Shereen: Shereen’s Website Shereen’s Podcast Twitter Facebook Instagram
It gets dark. We test Brad's theory about nothing being off limits or sacred. Shereen seems to bring something serious to the table and Brian likes watching Brad go wierd on it. Flip the switch of always being productive, making something happen and just realizing “You know, when I have a Mama Monday, it actually is productive.” – Shereen Thor On this episode of the Plan Simple Meals Podcast, I'm super excited to talk with Shereen Thor, the founder of Awaken the Rebel, a movement to get people to stop living the life they think they are supposed to live and to design their life on their own terms. She's a mom of two in the midst of the baby years. Shereen started out living toward other people's expectations until a friend convinced her to go to a personal development seminar. It woke her up and changed her life. She quit her job, started doing stand up comedy, and started dabbling as an entrepreneur. She started her life coaching business Awaken the Rebel about the same time she started her family. When her second pregnancy was in danger, she went on bed rest and moved from “Oh, motherhood needs to fit into my business” to , it's “My business needs to fit into motherhood.” We've been talking about work-life balance a lot, and here is where Shereen started to feel hers. We talk about: tapping into your body to find the direction you are supposed to go getting really clear on your intention and committing to yourself, even when you don't understand why you are doing it asking what you need as a mom instead of thinking you should be a certain kind of mom a weekly flow that includes family time, mama self-care time, household needs, and work having a place for an idea dump how date night makes being a family and couple more fun BIO Shereen Thor is a host, author, rebel, movement starter, and serial artistpreneur who lives life on her terms and helps others do the same. She facilitates live events and retreats and does 1-1 coaching as part of leading a movement that helps people stop settling for less and live an extraordinary life by their design. She's also the mom to two young kids. LINKS http://awakentherebel.com/ http://awakentherebel.com/topics/podcast/ Doable Changes from this episode: CREATE A WEEKLY WORKFLOW. Shereen talks about having family weekends, Mama Mondays, house-focus Tuesdays, open day on Wednesdays, and work-focused Thursdays. Your week might look really different, but what would it look like if you created your own flow for the week. Think about family time, work time, home time—how can you make space or it all? Map it out on paper and then live with it or a while to see how it works. CREATE AN IDEA DUMP. We all have so many ideas—new offerings for our business, people we want to connect with, things to pick up at the store—that our brains get cluttered. When we put it down on paper (or at least in our phones), we don't have to worry about remembering it. At the same time we don't have to deal with it right then. So if you get a business idea while you're doing family time, jot it down and focus back on the moment. DO DATE NIGHT. Ideally, date night becomes part of your regular weekly flow, but start with planning one. As Shereen says, it's more fun to have a family, more fun to be part of a couple when you have date night. Date night changes the communication and flow of energy, so you enjoy being together instead of just running through logistics together. REALLY getting healthy as a family can be a big lifestyle change. But no matter how insurmountable it may feel, focusing on one doable change at a time can help you take small steps toward your big goal. A healthy lifestyle is really made of lots of little things that when repeated regularly and added together over time make a huge impact on your life. Choose one Doable Change every Sunday night — one thing that you are willing to play with for the week. The key is to keep it doable and fun! Write that thing on a sticky note or your phone so you remember it. Then put 3 things on your calendar that support it. Choose from the changes above or download a list of 101 Doable Changes we made for you. http://plansimplemeals.com/101-doable-changes/
Get ready to fall in love with Shereen Thor. Part comedian, part life coach, part bad ass. Today, we had an important conversation how to effectively communicate with men, how to be yourself even if it pisses off other people, and finding your version of an extraordinary life. And no, you don’t have to sell all your possessions and sail around the world. (But you can if you want to!) Here’s what you’ll learn: -How to communicate with men effectively -How to be yourself and live your life without pissing others off -The mindset you need to be in to date for less stress and emotional overwhelm -Finding your version of an extraordinary life -How to let the masculine support you without losing your sense of who you are About Shereen: SHEREEN THOR is a bad ass on a mission, though she doesn’t care about seeming important so she won’t bore you with insignificant details that will make you think she’s impressive. She is not. She is just a regular gal doing her best to piss off the world and leave it a better place. She focuses her energy mostly on life purpose, family & lifestyle design. Freedom is of utmost importance, she can’t live without it and would die for the cause of helping others have it as well. So naturally, she’s kind of a pain in the ass. Many of us are complex beings who have many sides and we struggle to pick one. Shereen says fuck that. Don’t pick one. Be all of you. You are exquisite and you are perfect, but you are also inconsequential in the grand scheme of things. So don’t make this thing called life a big deal, just do you, Boo. Today’s guest is Shereen Thor. Shereen is the author of The Coolest Quote Book Eva and the Founder of Awaken The Rebel, a movement that helps people who feel disenchanted with their lives to stop settling for less and awaken their inner rebellious spirit so that they can live an extraordinary life by their design. Born a creative type she learned early on in her traditional Egyptian upbringing that if she wasn’t a doctor, lawyer, or engineer than she would inevitably amount to nothing. In order to seem “normal” and keep everyone else happy she decided that she would forsake all her own desires to fulfill other people’s expectations. So she got a degree, landed a job, and found herself utterly miserable at the age of twenty-four. Luckily one of her best friends suggested she go to a seminar where she was able to “Awaken her Inner Rebel,” and truly examine this life she had created. She decided to immediately quit her master’s degree program and start doing stand-up comedy. This was the official beginning of her writing her own Rebel Rule Book, and living life by her design. This was the beginning of the Awaken The Rebel movement. Shereen decided to continue to make people laugh while helping them to stop settling for less and awaken their inner rebellious spirit so that they can live an extraordinary life by their design. Shereen is certified in Neuro Linguistic Programming, and is a Certified Professional Coach by the Institute of Professional Excellence in Coaching.
