After Jimmy Savile's death in 2011, reports began to emerge that he had sexually abused hundreds of people throughout his life. Savile had been one of the country's best-known entertainers, a darling of the BBC, commanding audiences of millions on shows like Top of the Pops and Jim'll Fix It. Surely his criminal activities were known by those close to him? Just how deep did the cover up run? James and Jol are this week joined by journalist Meirion Jones, who's Newsnight investigation into the suspected paedophilic crimes of Savile was famously dropped at the 11th hour, not long after Savile's death. He also happens to be James's boss. Meirion reveals who at the BBC knew what at the height of Savile's fame, and opens up about the Newsnight scandal that engulfed the BBC in 2011, resulting in Meirion becoming the news rather than just reporting on it. Meirion Jones is the editor of The Bureau of Investigative Journalism and features in the Netflix documentary Jimmy Savile: A British Horror Story. The UK's largest, best funded, and most sinister spy agency, GCHQ are tasked with gathering information and keeping the UK's communications safe. So obviously Jol and James are asking… Can GCHQ see my nudes? (never shying away from the important questions - ed) Fittingly, James and Jol are joined this week by Hannah Khalique-Brown, an actor who has played a fledgling GCHQ coder on screen AND written an essay on conspiracy theories. Regular listeners will be unsurprised to learn that James is no stranger to the work of GCHQ… after working at Wikileaks and then on the NSA files leaked to the Guardian by Edward Snowden many would be concerned if he wasn't on a GCHQ watch list. Expect to hear in this episode how GCHQ spyware is named after Smurfs, how James got top secret files out of the UK after British spies made them destroy the copies they had in the UK, and extracts from Hannah's university essay on… conspiracy theories. Hannah stars as Saara Parvin in Channel 4's new cyber warfare drama, The Undeclared War, making her the perfect guest to discuss the supposed snooping powers of GCHQ. Bruce Lee – legendary martial artist, actor and director died on 20 July 1973 at the age of 32 in the middle of filming. Many believe he died in mysterious circumstances. Some believe he was killed by Chinese gangsters, others that he was assassinated by Shaolin monks and some say that he was poisoned to death. But one popular theory is that he was killed by the One-Inch Punch (also known as Dim Mak or the Touch of Death). What is it? Is it possible? And is this what offed Mr Lee at such a young age? Jolyon Rubenstein, James Ball and their special guest Sanjeev Bhaskar explore how you train to deploy such a punch, how it has endured in popular culture (‘Kill Bill' anyone?) and why Bruce Lee's family seem particularly cursed. Have you ever noticed how women's clothes have very few if any pockets? Is it the fault of ‘big handbag'? The patriarchy? Or do women simply not need to carry things? In 1954, Christian Dior declared that “Men have pockets to keep things in, women for decoration” but what's decorative about a pocket? And why has nothing much changed in 70 years? Feminist campaigner, writer, and fellow podcaster Caroline Criado Perez joins James and Jol to discuss her strict ‘no pockets, no purchase' rule, and why she's rallying for pocket equality! Did Lee Harvey Oswald act alone in killing JFK? The most widely believed conspiracy theory in America, and the one you've all been waiting for! Actor, writer, and director David Schneider joins James and Jol to dissect the countless conspiracies surrounding the assassination of the 35th President of the United States, John F. Kennedy. You may know David from such TV classics as The Day Today and Knowing Me, Knowing You with Alan Partridge. Plus, Mission: Impossible, 28 Days Later and The Death of Stalin. Believers of this conspiracy claim the involvement of the CIA, the Mafia, Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson, Cuban Prime Minister Fidel Castro, the KGB, or some combination of these. In fact, doubters of the lone gunman theory have accused 42 groups, 82 assassins and 214 people of being involved in the assassination. Why is this theory so widely believed, and acceptably so? If you believe this one, are you in danger or believing something more radical? And more importantly, why is the word ‘grassy knoll' so funny?! It’s our 2nd birthday here on Purple so the perfect opportunity to remind ourselves of what a brilliant year we’ve had - despite the obvious challenges and difficult global situation. This time last year we reverted to recording remotely but, if anything, this added to the intimate feel of the episodes and provided us with a weekly half-hour of stillness within an otherwise chaotic world. Within these clips of the best bits of the last year we set sail across the world’s oceans, take a walk through the garden, and sit down to a delicious plate of pasta (and baked beans for Gyles). We also ask ourselves who put the cock in cockroach, why Knightsbridge is a unique destination, and there’s another chance to hear a spectacular name-dropping anecdote involving the Sultan of Swoon. A Somethin’ Else production. If you have a question for Gyles and Susie or you have a topic you would like exploring in a future episode then please email us purple@somethinelse.com Susie’s Trio… how many of these did you remember? Thermopot - a lover of hot drinks Pollicitation - an offer made but not yet accepted Lanspresado - the person who turns up at the pub having “accidentally” forgotten their wallet
Happy Tuesday Purple People and welcome to what is literally our best ever, extra special, supersized edition of the show! This week Gyles and Susie will be exploring the humongous world of hyperbole. They're stars, legends and heroes- but don't tell them I said so... Whether you're feeling rather mediocre or you're half way up a mountain, join us as we attempt to hop off the euphemism treadmill and prove that it's actually quite nice to be quite nice! Elsewhere Susie explains the dangers of gilding the lily and Gyles ponders the difference between inflation, truth and an alternative fact, before answering mail from you, our wonderful Purple People, for whom no superlative is too emphatic! A Somethin’ Else production. Don’t forget about our live show, coming to a computer near you on Thursday 25th March- grab tickets here! We're sure there are a million zillion exasperating examples of exaggerations you'd like to share, so get in touch by emailing us here: purple@somethinelse.com. Susie’s Trio: Dixiefixie- To be held in a state of confinement Doggerybore- Nonsense Puckeration- Anything that gets us hot under the collar

This episode comes with a heebie-jeebies warning because this week, Gyles and Susie are investigating phobias. From the common claustrophobia to the less known gelophobia, this episode will explore what has been scaring us since the greeks. It’s also quite the confessional for our hosts as they’ll reveal their shared aerophobia, Susie’s self created prunidigiaphobia and Gyles tries to persuade us that he has glossophobia (we didn’t believe him either). However, one phobia we all know that for us Purple People isn’t a concern is porphyrophobia: a fear of Purple! A Somethin’ Else production. Don’t forget about our live show, coming to a computer near you on Thursday 29th March- grab tickets here! Gyles and Susie want to hear about any phobias that the Purple People have or any fears that don’t have a name yet, email purple@somethinelse.com. Susie's Trio: Quonking - Unwelcome noise form the sideline Snoaching - To speak through the noise Nikhedonia - pleasure of anticipating victory

Susie and Gyles also get a bit European (ooh la la), explaining why it’s rather gauche to call a woman zaftig, and recapitulate why one must always capitulate to an offer of poitín.If you'd like to hear Susie and Gyles answer your etymological inquiries then you can get in touch at purple@somethinelse.com.A Somethin’ Else production.Susie’s Trio: Flarnecking- vulgarly flaunt somethingJanuary- the month of Janus, the Roman God who presided over doors and new beginnings Rogitation- to ask the same question over and over again See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
