Tarana Burke, founder of the Me Too movement joins Sam to celebrate Women’s History Month and talks about how she’d rather be with good people in a dark place than bad people in a bright place and how Tesla cybertrucks are the only things that make them laugh these days. Sam and Tarana discuss how so many people in the administration are credibly accused of sexual violence and what to do when funding and policies for life-changing work are in jeopardy. They commiserate over the chokehold Amazon Prime has over them, what it’s like to run a global organization when the US acts like it doesn’t care about the rest of the world, and how we can do more together than apart. Forgotten Foods: Memories and Recipes from Muslim South Asia (Pan Macmillan India, 2023) is a collection of essays and recipes that highlights the complex and layered food history of Muslim communities across South Asia. The contributors to the volume include historians, literary scholars, plant scientists, writers, chefs, and more. And their range of essays take us from Ladakh in the north to Sri Lanka in the south, as we learn how food has not been fixed but rather has traveled, survived, and transformed with its peoples. The memories of foods captured here, be it biryanis, pulaos, khicheris, prawn curries, dhal, kanhi (or khanji), and halwa, just to name a few, unsettle gender, class, economic, and caste boundaries, and welcome us to plunge into the delicious food practices of diverse Muslim communities be they Indians, Pakistanis, Rampuris, Kashmiris, Mappila, and Tamils. The collection also critically highlights how food has been weaponized and politicized (as we see with Muslims eating beef in India today) while also being invoked in discourses of authenticity, especially as food practices and memories travel with those who are displaced into the diaspora, such as amongst Kashmiri Muslims. Food here is then used as an incisive analytical tool to complicate histories and contemporary experiences of Muslims in South Asia. This stunning archive of Muslim food memories and its accompanying delicious recipes will be of interest to so many communities of listeners, from academics of Islam in South Asia, food bloggers, foodies on social media, chefs, and more. Pulling up at the best station from this nation, we have the Ladies Special coming in with Producer & chillwave, trip hop electronica artist from Delhi, Tarana Marwah aka Komorebi. She's out with a new record that released in Sept 2023 called The Fall. It was a behemoth multimedia project that was 6 years in the making and includes a 6-song album, a 30-page comic book and music videos made with Epic Games' Unreal Engine. We talk about how family is our kryptonite and invariably the greatest inspiration for her work; how collaboration, as much as it's fulfilling can also be intimidating; and whether it's a soliloquy or an intergalactic sci-fi story every record is autobiographical. Also, Tarana is on the lookout for a good choreographer for her next musical venture. Song List: The Fall (01:15 to 06:51) Watch Out (17:14 to 21:15) Better Not Bitter (26:30 to 31:57) I Grew Up (48:22 to 54:11) Follow Komorebi on Instagram Come be our friend: Facebook @maedinindia Instagram @maedinindia Twitter @maedinindia CREDITS: Host: Mae Twitter: @maebemaebe Instagram: @maemariyam Producer: Shaun Fanthome, Sean D'mello, Ruchi Sawardekar Content & Social Media Manager: Meghna Gulati Sound Editing & Additional Engineering by: Lakshman Parsuram Video Editing by: Jishnu Guha Artwork Design by Alika Gupta Episode Mixed & Mastered by: Kartik Kulkarni Music Mixed by: Aria Nanji Recorded at Island City Studios

Previous fixed wireless solutions relied on WiFi or 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) which were geared toward mobility and not high-speed broadband access. This limited scalability and performance. Dirk Gates The Next Generation fixed wireless was designed to provide the fiber-like speeds over fixed wireless at distance. This provides resellers and business another option to the broadband, expensive fiber and the underperforming traditional fixed wireless. Listen in as Dirk reviews the the Next Generation Fixed Wireless features that he and the rest of Tarana are so excited about – real game changer technology. G1x2 mode On September 27, Tarana announced its release of G1x2 mode, a software update that doubles the current 80MHz bandwidth of the G1 platform to 160MHz, organized as four independent 40MHz carriers — in either 5 or 6 GHz or both — to deliver up to 1.6 Gbps in aggregate for each G1 link. Additionally, Tarana also announced that G1 in 6 GHz will soon be available in the US, Canada, and other countries around the world. They've built their platform company on a foundation of passion for deep innovation and tight focus on getting great things done. their results speak for themselves: they've grown from 0 to over 180 customers in their first year of G1 sales, with hundreds more in the pipeline, including companies across the full spectrum of the industry — fiber builders, WISPs, and incumbent broadband providers — connecting businesses and consumers alike. They'll collaborate with anyone working to make the digital divide a thing of the past. That's their enduring mission — that's Tarana! This episode features Basil Alwan, CEO of Tarana. We discuss what sets Tarana apart as a provider of what it calls "next-generation" fixed wireless access, or ngFWA, and how it's deploying its technology to help WISPs close the digital divide. We also get into broadband policy and why he wants legislators to reconsider unlicensed spectrum as a tool and see FWA as more than just a "stopgap" to fiber. The visionary, next-generation organizer Ai-jen Poo says this of Tarana Burke: “There are just so many layers of hope that she brings to the world and to people like me, to survivors, to all kinds of communities.” Ai-jen and Tarana are the conversation partners for this episode of The Future of Hope. And what a conversation it is. We listen in on a brilliant friendship that has powered and sustained two extraordinary women who are leading defining movements of this generation that call us to our highest humanity. Tarana founded the ‘me too.' Movement. What you are about to hear is intimate, revelatory, and rooted in trust and care. It's also an invitation to all of us, to imagine and build a more graceful way to remake the world.Ai-jen Poo co-founded and leads The National Domestic Workers Alliance, is the director of Caring Across Generations, and co-founder of Supermajority. Basil Alwan, CEO of Tarana Wireless, joins the podcast to discuss Tarana's approach to fixed wireless access (FWA) and why its technology is unique. Alwan, a startup veteran who most recently ran Nokia's IP/Optical business, also weighs in on how Tarana's gear can help lessen the digital divide and why some of the company's customers are having WTF moments about FWA.In our conversation, we cover how and why Alwan became CEO at Tarana, a company that has been around since 2009, but only really started turning heads in the broader telecom market about a year ago. Alwan discusses how Tarana transitioned from handling small cell backhaul to building a novel broadband solution for service providers of all sizes, Tarana's G1 platform. He goes on to talk about the costs that service providers should consider when deploying traditional fixed wireless and line-of-sight cellular technologies. Finally, he reveals how Tarana Wireless is working with service providers and other channel partners and how the company's latest funding round has changed things. In March, Tarana announced that it had closed a $170 million round at a $1 billion valuation and was on track to "deliver over $100 million of revenue in 2022, from a customer base that has exploded to more than 120 service providers."Here's how the conversation unfolded:How Basil Alwan became CEO of Tarana Wireless (01:26)Tarana Wireless's work in the small cell market (04:55)Market opportunities for FWA and line-of-sight technologies (07:06)Key regions where FWA can lessen the digital divide and the cost to service providers for homes passed (09:18)Digging into Tarana's latest funding round and growth prospects (12:03)How Tarana is going to market and how service providers are stepping up (13:24)A real WTF moment for one of Tarana's customers (21:33)What changes when your company becomes a unicorn? In this episode of Critical Reads, we will be discussing Unbound: My Story of Liberation and the Birth of the Me Too Movement by Tarana J. Burke. Here's a brief summary of the book courtesy of the author/publisher: "From the founder and activist behind one of the largest movements of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, the 'me too' movement, Tarana Burke debuts a powerful memoir about her own journey to saying those two simple yet infinitely powerful words―me too―and how she brought empathy back to an entire generation in one of the largest cultural events in American history. Tarana didn't always have the courage to say 'me too.' As a child, she reeled from her sexual assault, believing she was responsible. Unable to confess what she thought of as her own sins for fear of shattering her family, her soul split in two. One side was the bright, intellectually curious third-generation Bronxite steeped in Black literature and power, and the other was the bad, shame-ridden girl who thought of herself as a vile rule-breaker, not as a victim. She tucked one away, hidden behind a wall of pain and anger, which seemed to work...until it didn't. Tarana fought to reunite her fractured self, through organizing, pursuing justice, and finding community. In her debut memoir, she shares her extensive work supporting and empowering Black and brown girls, and the devastating realization that to truly help these girls she needed to help that scared, ashamed child still in her soul. She needed to stop running and confront what had happened to her, for Heaven and Diamond and the countless other young Black women for whom she cared. They gave her the courage to embrace her power. A power which in turn she shared with the entire world. Through these young Black and brown women, Tarana found that we can only offer empathy to others if we first offer it to ourselves. Unbound is the story of an inimitable woman's inner strength and perseverance, all in pursuit of bringing healing to her community and the world around her, but it is also a story of possibility, of empathy, of power, and of the leader we all have inside ourselves. In sharing her path toward healing and saying 'me too,' Tarana reaches out a hand to help us all on our own journeys." In this episode of Ask the Expert, Simone Melvin talks with CORE chair Sylvia Bloom about her role and insight on the Symposium. Sylvia is a senior transfer student at SMU. She served as the Community Outreach Coordinator for CORE last year and is currently working with the Women and LGBT Center director, Dr. Sidney Gardner, and the rest of the student organization to plan the event. This episode mentions sexual assault, which could be triggering to some listeners. Tarana Burke coined the phrase “me too” to help young Black girls in Selma, Alabam talk about sexual assault over a decade ago. But when #MeToo went viral overnight in 2017, Tarana had to figure out how to share her life's work and its resources with a broader audience. Today, Tarana's facing new challenges: how to offer sexual assault survivors the resources they need over the internet, and learning to balance her own needs alongside her work. In this episode, Tarana talks about: How “me too” began How she keeps going when personal and professional overlap How she approaches burnout and recovery Why rest is important for work Learn more about your ad choices. Breaking news- You don't have to put up with it! Jane Simpson is a continence nurse specialist and has had her own private practice for more than 20 years where she treats patients with all forms of pelvic floor dysfunction. Do you ever pee a little bit when you laugh, cough or sneeze? Are you getting up during the night to go to the toilet? All these things could be symptoms of your oestrogen beginning to deplete in peri menopause….and it won't go away on its own! Jane answers questions from the Collective, we learn why pelvic floor exercises are so important but are you doing them correctly? We talk about the pelvic floor revolution that needs to happen in the UK, about pelvic floor care after pregnancy and why this will help you during the menopause. No Taboos are left unturned here - we also talk Bowels, Wind, Prolapse & Sex. Find out what you can do if you already have a pelvic floor dysfunction or how you may prevent one. Honestly ALL folks need to hear what Jane has to say. The Book Collective continue reading ‘Untamed' by Tarana Burke, a beautiful and honest memoir from the founder of the MeToo movement. We talk about low histamine food in this Menopause month in the Foodie Collective There's a movie review for the Collective for No Time To Die, but does the movie pass the Bechdel test ? A new era for Bond? We discuss. As we come to the end of our WI, we ask the Collective if they have a new WI for us! We progress through the thought provoking ‘Untamed' by Tarana Burke we learn about how she survived her teenage years in the Bronx and her first insight into being a leader and a woman with a voice. There's a beautiful moment when Tarana finds her voice when the class talk about Maya Angelou's Phenomenal Woman a pivotal moment in her life. We went to the movies and watched the latest James Bond film, No Time To Die. We absolutely loved it! As two women bought up with Bond, the latest film shone out from the old misogyny of Bond, a cast of strong capable women that did not need a man to come to their rescue, let's hope we are in a new era for this evocative character. The Foodie Collective discuss histamine intolerance, the symptoms are so similar to the Menopause and if you have a histamine intolerance Jinty goes through the food you can and cannot eat with an analogy from Dr Sarah Ball. (Recipe on our Instagram profile). As we come to the end of our WI 16 sea swims for Women's Aid, we ask if there is weekly invite or challenge you would like to give us, although Jinty has flatly refused crocheting. We're continuing our conversation with activist, founder of the me too movement, and our personal friend and hero,Tarana Burke. We talk about: 1. What Tarana would say to her twelve-year-old self that might have changed the trajectory of her life. 2. Tarana's life-shifting realization that her relationship struggles with her mother were not due to her mother's lack of desire to love her well, but her lack of capacity—and how Tarana built more capacity for her own child. 3. The one thing Tarana said to her child that changed everything—and why Amanda now says the same thing to her children. CW: We reference sexual abuse and trauma. About Tarana: For more than 25 years, activist and advocate Tarana J. Burke has worked at the intersection of sexual violence and racial justice. Fueled by commitments to interrupt sexual violence and other systemic inequalities disproportionately impacting marginalized people, particularly Black women and girls, Tarana has created and led various campaigns focused on increasing access to resources and support for impacted communities, including the ‘me too.' movement, which to date has galvanized millions of survivors and allies around the world. Please join us in the first part of our joyful, energizing, and hopeful conversation with activist, advocate, and our personal hero,Tarana Burke. We talk about: 1. How the spoken and unspoken rules for girls led Tarana to constantly perform the role of “good girl” so that “her secret” would never be revealed. 2. The impossible double bind so many survivors live through: that the protection of our community is what saves us, but the need to protect our community is what silences us. 3. Why Maya Angelou's work changed everything for Tarana—and how, in her early twenties, she began documenting everything joyful in her life. 4. How dancing with Rob was the one place Tarana could safely explore her sexuality with no demands on her body—and how meaningful that was for her. CW: We reference sexual abuse and trauma. In a week where the man who murdered Sarah Everard was sentenced and Sabina Nessa's killer was arrested, we look at how safe women are, in all aspects of their lives. We speak to Kat from Women's Aid about the work they are doing to ensure women have a safe place to live, how the money raised from the 1.6 Women's Aid Challenge will go to help countless women and their children living with abuse. We also speak to a woman who is standing up to sexual harassment in a workplace with deep rooted misogyny, she is fighting for the right to build a career in a traditionally male dominated environment. We start reading ‘Unbound' by Tarana Burke and begin to get to know the powerful woman she is today from her traumatic early years, and our Foodie Collective cooks up a dish high in phytoestrogens which is extremely tasty! And as we come to the end of our WI 1.6 sea swimming challenge for Women's Aid, we reveal our total to date from the donations we have received from the amazing Collective. We have been appalled at what is coming out of the press in the last week about language used around rape, how police forces around the UK need to be accountable for the heinous actions of Sarah Everard's killer. The total lack of understanding of women's fear, they might as well have been talking from another planet, yes, we're talking about the infamous Kit Malthouse and Phillip Allot both men In extremely powerful positions. Women's Aid is a charity it is a grassroots federation working together to provide life-saving services in England and build a future where domestic abuse is not tolerated. Our guest, Kat, is a senior support worker with Women's Aid and she joins Jinty for a talk about the work they do, the statistics for domestic abuse in England and Wales are shocking and we get to know what our fundraising is doing to help this charity. Sexual harassment in the workplace is sadly, nowhere near a thing of the past, we speak to a brave woman who is standing up and fighting against sexual abuse and harassment as she tries to build a career in a traditionally male dominated environment. Sam talks about the deep rooted misogyny she has had to deal with while working as a gas engineer in a company that allows women to be treated as objects rather than giving them space to learn and grow their careers. The Book Collective crack the spine of Tarana Burke's ‘Unbound' a powerful memoir from the founder and activist behind the Me Too movement. In the opening chapters we learn about Tarana's life and the rape and abuse she suffered at the hands of older boys and how a woman's words made sure she never told of her ordeal. It's a painfully brilliant start to this book. Next week we will be reading from Breath Again to and including Indelible. The Foodie Collective are still in Menopause food month and Jinty, once again cooks a delicious dish this week of Sticky Tofu which is full of phytoestrogens! She explains about each ingredient and how you can cook this yourself. https://www.sixvegansisters.com/2020/03/19/sweet-sour-tofu/ We reveal the total for our Women's Aid challenge and are so thankful and humbled by every donation. Oprah sits down with the founder of #MeToo, Tarana Burke, to discuss her new memoir, Unbound. In this candid conversation, Tarana reveals how her own experiences with sexual abuse, shame and unkindness helped her discover her true calling as an empathetic leader.
From the founder and activist behind one of the largest movements of the 21st century, the Me Too movement, Tarana Burke debuts a powerful memoir about her own journey to saying those two simple yet infinitely powerful words and how she brought empathy back to an entire generation. Tarana didn't always have the courage to say me too. As a child, she reeled from her sexual assault, believing she was responsible. Unable to confess what she thought of as her own sins for fear of shattering her family, her soul split in two. One side was the bright, intellectually curious third generation Bronxite steeped in Black literature and power, and the other was the bad, shame-ridden girl who thought of herself as a vile rule breaker, not of a victim. She tucked one away, hidden behind a wall of pain and anger, which seemed to work...until it didn't. Tarana fought to reunite her fractured soul, through organising, pursuing justice and finding community. In her debut memoir, she shares her extensive work supporting and empowering Black and Brown girls, and the devastating realisation that to truly help these girls she needed to help that scared, ashamed child still in her soul. Tarana has found that we can only offer empathy to others if we first offer it to ourselves. Unbound is the story of an inimitable woman's inner strength and perseverance, all in pursuit of bringing healing to her community and the world around her, but it is also a story of possibility, of empathy, of power and of the leader we all have inside ourselves. In sharing her path toward healing and saying me too, Tarana reaches out a hand to help us all on our own journeys.

Tarana reacts in an emotional way to Shannon's two-part conversation with her friend and ally, Claire, about anti-racism. During the discussion Shannon mentions the 1966 documentary film called, "A Time for Burning" - where a white Lutheran Pastor in Omaha tries to encourage racial bridge building between a Black Lutheran church and a white Lutheran church. Unfortunately, the work doesn't go so well. We highly recommend you take time to watch. Ally is defined as someone who makes the commitment and effort to recognize their privilege (based on gender, class, race, sexual identity, etc.) and work in solidarity with oppressed groups in the struggle for justice. Allies understand that it is in their own interest to end all forms of oppression, even those from which they may benefit in concrete ways. 5 Visionary Leadership Examples “We Are Called to Be the Visionary Leaders We Are Destined to Be.” -Lia Dunlap (05:27-05:32) What does it mean to be a visionary leader? It means guiding others to their highest selves and creating a brighter future for humanity. It means taking a stand for something bigger than yourself, acting toward that vision relentlessly. You can inspire others to leave the shadows. To be seen, to be recognized. To be heard. To be valued. In this week's episode, Lia Dunlap shares her five visionary leaders that made a positive impact in her life. Part One of ‘5 Visionary Leadership Examples’ Visionary leadership means recognizing the inherent power within each individual. It means knowing a unique and unified goal can double and triple the power of a person. Visionary leaders can see things from a broad perspective. “A visionary leader sees the future in the present.” – Lia Dunlap (09:02-09:06) There are many great examples of visionary leaders inspiring others to stand up and hold the world accountable for doing better. Each leader had a passion for a specific vision. Here are some of the most significant examples of visionary leadership style: Nelson Mandela Nelson Mandela's journey saved his own life and transformed the lives of his entire country. After years of spending time in a small prison cell in Robin Island, he was released on February 11th, 1990. He went on to end apartheid, also establishing a multi-racial government against all the odds. In 1993, Mandela won the Nobel Peace Prize along with Frederik Willem de Klerk for their work during the civil rights revolution in South Africa. A year later, Mandela became South Africa's first black president, and his vision of hope inspired South Africans and the world. It was an example of equality that inspired the world as a whole. Maya Angelou Speaking of freedom, my next visionary leader found hers giving a singing voice to a caged bird. Maya Angelou was a poet, an artist, a luminary, and an author. For generations, she was a light at the end of the tunnel. Her vision of encouraging girls to speak up, find their voice, and recognize their magnificence as phenomenal women made me proud Part Two of ‘5 Visionary Leadership Examples’ Tarana Burke Next is Tarana Burke, a civil rights activist from The Bronx, New York, who founded the 'Me Too' movement. Tarana is an example of a visionary. She looked beyond her circumstances and helped create a campaign that transformed the lives of women across the world. The ripple effect allowed women across the globe to say, "me too." They could express that they had been victims of abuse. They could make sure women knew that they weren't alone. It allowed Tarana to capture the spirit of those people who had been affected. It's like catching lightning in a bottle. You are there at the right time and finding that thing inside of you that grows so loudly that you have to speak it. In expressing it, she inspired others to do the same. There are many similarly influential leaders rising. Maybe it's you; perhaps it's someone you know. “Knowing your life purpose allows you to live at the level of a visionary leader.” – Lia Dunlap (17:16-17:27) Rosa Parks My other inspiration is Rosa Parks. There's a wave of people rising against racial and global injustice. The foundation for that change comes from people like Rosa Parks and others in that era who laid the foundation of the movement. We can stand on that foundation and fight for equality and the experience of humanity. We are all the better because of women and visionaries like Rosa parks. You might think she was not a visionary, or she was just a woman who was coming home from work and was tired. Incorrect. In Parks' heart, there was a vision of how life should be, and sometimes that's the subtlety of a visionary. It's the subtlety of knowing enough is enough. Knowing life can feel different, better, brighter, more hopeful, more engaged, more inclusive of the true breadth of humanity. Michelle Obama The fifth person on my list is the former first lady, Michelle Obama. Not only for the incredible work that she did in the White House but for what she continues to do today. I see her in the media, still inspiring people across the country to show up, be bold, and fight for a future that makes a difference. She had incredible intelligence and grace, even in the face of ridicule and hatred. As a woman of color, I know it takes courage to face that day after day and still show up. It takes a leader to say: I can see those against me, and I'm for the people who are ready to make a change. You have to set expectations for your partners, your team, and even for the people that you serve. Another method of leadership is being aligned with who you are. You could be the person who inspires someone else to look at their shortcomings, their lack or limitation, values, and beliefs. When inspiring people to do bolder, brighter things with their lives and with the world, you might be chastised. You might be called weird or crazy. People who used to be your friends may turn away. A visionary leader understands that from the beginning. It's worth all of the pain, frustration, and pitfalls to get where you are going. Visionary leaders aren't born, they're made. They're made through the challenges, oppression, and tragedy. Because of these experiences, they're able to see the possibilities for all of us. The mark of a visionary leader sees the potential and possibility in everyone. Here's the thing. A real visionary leader will happily turn down clients because they believe in the independent potential of the client. They think that the client can find a solution and can find the resources they need independently. It takes seeing the most precise vision, not just for yourself or your business but for everyone whose lives your business touches. When you're able to define your mission, not only for the prosperity of your business but for humanity, what is it you want it to do? How do you want things to change? That goes back to understanding your unique life purpose. When you return regularly, you know that you are doing what's right for that vision. Then, you begin holding on to that vision firmly, capturing the imagination and inspiration of others. Download and Stream Me Too Blog Post Transcript: Last year I started working on an album project, quite by mistake to be honest. I started playing around with Apple Loops in Garage Band and ended up writing a song that I thought sounded pretty good. So, I kept playing around with these loops. Now, it’s 10 songs later and as of the 25th of October I have released five singles. The first single, Me Too, was released on the 29th of March, and of the 10 songs, Me Too is the most personal. This song took me completely outside of my comfort zone. So much so that I couldn’t sleep at night after I sent the finished song to the distributor. Here’s why. I haven’t self-released any music in 10 years. I’m singing about a subject that seems to both unify and divide. I’m finally telling my story of being sexually assaulted when I was a kid. This is some scary sh**. To be honest, right now is the first time I’ve truly spoken about it. Writing and recording the story was hard, but what I’m feeling right now is off the charts. I let my husband hear the track, and while he was listening I thought I was going to have a nervous breakdown. Vulnerability sucks. In his very British way he asks, very slowly mind you, ‘is this about what they’re talking about in the news?’ My answer was it is and it isn’t. After writing the song I did some research on #metoo and discovered that Tarana Burke, a social activist and community organizer in the US, was the founder of this movement that started back in 2006. Tarana said she was inspired to use the phrase after being unable to respond to a 13-year-old girl who confided to her that she had been sexually assaulted. Burke said she later wished she had simply told the girl, “Me too.” After the songs release I received emails and messages from people saying, ‘Me Too’ and thanking me for being brave and sharing my story. But I didn’t feel brave. I felt scared and worried about what people will think. Is the song good enough. Am I good enough. In telling my truth I have realised that not feeling good enough is directly related to the shame that was left by what I experienced. This idea has permeated my teens and my adult life, but knowledge is power. Now that I know where this feeling was born, I can begin the work of growing past it. I’m already noticing that I’m worrying less about what people think. Maybe owning ones truth is the cure to the disease to please. I’m getting back to the me I was before the shame. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/gloria-miller-music/message

In this week's episode of the ArtTactic Podcast, we're joined by Tarana Sawhney, chairperson of the Confederation for Indian Industry task force on art and culture, and Anders Petterson, founder and managing director of ArtTactic. Earlier this year, ArtTactic published a report on the intersection between art and philanthropy in the Indian art market, we speak at length on this topic with Tarana and Anders. They update us on recent philanthropic trends in the Indian art market and why the Indian art scene has had to rely so much on private museums, foundations and individuals. We also discuss the extent to which the government is now supporting the arts, how public spaces and events are being supported by philanthropy and how the next generation of philanthropists are being engaged.
This week on #LetsTalkBruh we break from our regularly scheduled format and discuss the panel we participated in last week entitled: Let's Hear it From the Boys: Black Masculinity in the Age of #MeToo. We recap our thoughts on the panel and open up the conversation to those of y'all who couldn't make it. Obviously a conversation surrounding Black men and the role we play in the MeToo era deserves more than just a recap type of conversation, so definitely expect for us to cover this topic in more detail at some point this year. In addition to the panel recap, before we close the episode we also give a brief Valentine's Day recap. Tune in now. Anniversaries give us cause to stop and reflect on a specific moment in our life. Some can be good, others bad - but all cause us to pause. Lee and Matt Harrington celebrate the one-year anniversary of the #MeToo Movement today and look forward to a more diverse future both for the individuals directly effected and the business world at large.
One year ago this month, the first bombshell allegations against Harvey Weinstein appeared in The New York Times and The New Yorker. Shortly thereafter, #MeToo went viral on social media. But the origins of this movement are at least a decade older. They lie with the work of Tarana Burke, a civil rights advocate devoted to fighting sexual harassment and violence. We talk to Tarana and actor and activist Alyssa Milano, whose tweet helped bring #MeToo mainstream.

Tarana Burke set the #MeToo movement in motion long before the Harvey Weinstein scandal, the Alyssa Milano tweet or the Time’s Up campaign. It actually began more than a decade ago in Alabama to support brown and Black survivors of sexual violence. Since then, the call has gone viral, and Tarana is on a mission to help survivors navigate what comes after the hashtag. Whether you're a survivor or an ally, everyone has a place in this movement, she says. And as you’ll hear in this interview, she is proving that a movement of radical healing is not only possible, it’s happening.#MeToo is not just a movement for white cisgender women. It's about giving young people language, survivors a way forward, and the community coming together to combat sexual assault.Follow Tarana on InstagramCheck out the MeTooMvmt. If this episode resonates for you, we’d love for you to take a screenshot and tag us on Instagram stories @ctznwell and @taranaburke, and click below to tweet:“If we don’t center the voices of maringalized people, than we are doing the wrong work” @taranaburke @kkellyyoga @ctznwell #CTZN ctznwell.org/ctznpodcastJoin CTZNWELL on PatreonFollow CTZNWELL on InstagramSign up for CTZNWELL’s weekly email WELLread and check out our free action guides at ctznwell.org.
We’ve all heard about the hashtag #MeToo, but did you know this movement started 12 years ago by Tarana Burke? Tarana was named Time Person of the Year for 2017 and is known for being the first to use the phrase “Me Too” to raise awareness of the pervasiveness of sexual abuse and assault in society. Tarana discusses where it all began and what’s next for the movement in this inspiring interview. It's Friday! And we're one week closer to Christmas. It's all too easy this time of year to get sucked into the vortex of presents and shopping, so we encourage you to listen to this podcast while you're doing something non commercial-holiday related. Maybe it's time to vacuum the spare bedroom... or clean out that closet you said you would clean out last year. With Brian and Anna (aka Mangodroplet) at the helm, we're going to be talking about a pretty heavy, and very relevant, topic. Sexual harassment, and the "Me Too" phenom, is a vital conversation to have and I think you'll find that our hosts do it justice. In This Episode Welcome Mangodroplet! What do you nerd out about? Gaming community Overwatch Sexual Harassment Anna's "Me Too" story Andy Weir's new book "Artemis" HOLIDAY LIGHTS! Me Too Did you know #MeToo isn't all that new? It went viral in October of this year, but the phrase was actually adopted by a social activist on MySpace back in '06! Tarana Burke created the concept as part of her campaign, whose objective was to promote empowerment through empathy among women of color who experienced abuse. The origin of the phrase, in Tarana's usage of it, is quite revealing and still indicative of our culture today. A young girl confided to Tarana that she had been a victim of sexual abuse and Tarana didn't know what to say. Later on, she says, she had wished she said to the girl: Me too. Talking about sexual harassment is difficult. There are so many victims, friends and family of victims. There are accusers who've been dismissed, and accused who are innocent. There is so much baggage that talking about it can seem fruitless or insurmountable or intimidating. But that often is the case for issues that have such emotional depths tied to them, isn't it? Wherever there are deep emotional wounds there will be issues that are difficult to talk about. This is one of those issues that I like to say needs to undergo a "demystification process". Talking about it, opening the floor for discussion, and, most importantly, listening to others (particularly those who are trying to articulate how the abuse took place) are all important steps in helping to take the mystery and the insurmountable feeling out of the issue. Providing context for abuse can help others to recognize it, it can correct wrong ways of thinking. But we have to be willing to get a little uncomfortable in order to get anywhere. Last week, POLITICO hosted its fifth annual Women Rule summit, where we had several frank discussions about sexual harassment and assault. In this episode of the 'Women Rule' podcast, we hear some poignant moments from the summit: interviews with Elaine Chao and Kellyanne Conway about their "Me Too" moments, a discussion with Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and the misconduct allegations sweeping Capitol Hill, and a talk with Tarana Burke, the woman who founded the "Me Too" movement over a decade ago.

Of you spent any time at all on social media this week, you saw it all over your timeline: #metoo Some found it empowering. Some found it traumatizing. But one thing it definitely wasn't? New. Activist and organizer Tarana Burke actually started the "me too" movement ten years ago. It gained traction this week when championed by Alyssa Milano, but Tarana's story got lost in the shuffle, and many assumed the movement was brand new. Tarana Burke joins us on this week's episode to talk about the origins and importance of "me too," and the work she still does to support survivors.
