I had a great time at my first ever podcasting conference and event: Podcamp Toronto! In this episode, I share a bit about what I learned, and share thoughts on some conversations/themes present in the podcasting space, including corporate vs DIY, YouTube and video-based podcasts, how people self-sabotage by never starting (and always leaving it til later), why I love chatting with strangers in hallways (and am always pleasantly surprised by who they turn out to be), and where some of the big knowledge can be found at these events. Should I apply next year to speak? What do you guys think? Did I leave anything out that you'd like me to address? Let me know! Secrets of a Witch is a podcast by writer, artist, and spiritual teacher Sabrina Scott. She's been a practicing witch and medium for more than 25 years, and in this casual, mellow show she shares her secrets and musings about how to overcome pain and live a happy, magical life. She is the author of four books: Witchbody; Curse and Cure: Magic for Real Life; Rapeseed: Poetry and Writing About Life After Rape; and the upcoming Bodymagic: A Graphic Novel About Witchcraft, Trauma, and Healing. In this era of everyone and their grandpa (and dog) having a podcast, I have to wonder: Are all these newbie interviewers just pulling off really skillful grifts? Step 1: Interview famous people. Step 2: Profit!Spicy hot takes aside, in this episode I talk about how the journey is the destination, and how crucial (and unavoidable) it is for us to really put in the hours and do the work of developing and advancing our thought processes, analytical skills, rhetorical skills, and skills in the creative industries/spaces of our choice. I talk about how this is something that I've observed in pretty much every creative space I've ever spent time in - it's not unique to the podcast space whatsoever, though much of what I say here is inspired by some of what I heard at Podcamp Toronto this past weekend! As one presenter said at the conference: You are not owed an audience. What value do you bring?Tune in for a super interesting discussion of these themes.-Secrets of a Witch is a podcast by writer, artist, and spiritual teacher Sabrina Scott. Mike wanted to get some sort of taping done for February. Having failed that, he’s now pretty happy to get that checked off for March right away James comes in for a free form digest talk, and a warm up for episode 8 later this month. In it we bring up Mike’s lone day at Podcamp Toronto last weekend (4:10), personal anecdotes and thoughts on the Vic Mignogna scandal (25:22), and Mike’s more solid thoughts Marie Kondo’s popularity (1:02:20). We thought we’d be done with those, but then Mike made the mistake of asking James about what’s on his Crunchyroll queue and current issues with the app (1:14:15), and then Mike makes some final NHK recommendations and the events calendar (1:30:30) Mike Nicolas, James Austin More Information and links on our website https://animeroundtable.wordpress.com/2019/03/02/6ixtalk-anime-roundtable-v2-0-digest-2-march-1-2019/

There’s a storm a brewin’. Mike the Virtual Yooper is visiting, well, sorta, as he stayed here Thursday night and left for Podcamp Toronto on Friday. He comes back Sunday, leaves for home Monday, weather permitting. The break week was eventful. Jon spilled a Pepsi on his computer and subsequently wrecked it. A new one will serve as his 18th birthday present. Isabelle and I are (weather permitting) going to a thing tomorrow. Because of this, Isabelle wants me to wear a jacket. Isabelle has been doing lots of cool stuff, and she updates all of us about it.

Chris Boyce is the Co-Founder and Executive Producer at Pacific Content, who produce podcasts for big brands including Shopify's “TGIM” and Slack's the “Slack Variety Pack” which Fast Company described as “‘This American Life,' meets ‘The Office,' meets ‘Monty Python.'” I spoke with Chris at Podcamp Toronto, in 2016. Chris' background includes his term as Executive Director, Radio/Audio, and Director of Program Development for CBC Radio, overseeing the development and launch of the broadcaster's new generation of programming including "Q," "Under the Influence," "The Debaters," and "Spark." In our podcast, Chris discusses the value of figuring out "what is the story I'm trying to tell" before you begin your interview. The value of eliciting emotions and drama from your guests because the host or narrator can provide the fact. We play a podcast clip that demonstrate how to create the audio illusion you are recording on location with your guest when you are actually recording from your office on Skype or Zencaster. Earlier this year, TJ Williamson of the World Tea Podcast invited us to join him in leading a session on industry-specific podcasting at Podcamp Toronto. And when the nice folks at Podcamp also gave us the opportunity to record a Talking Tea episode in front of a live audience at Toronto's Imperial Pub, TJ graciously agreed to join us as a guest on Talking Tea, to chat about the backgrounds of our two podcasts, why we do what we do, and about TJ's work in tea outside of his show. TJ tells us a bit about his own tea journey and some of his experiences working at a Japanese tea farm, and then we respond to one of the questions we received several times after our panel talk: why neither of us include a focus on herbal infusions in our podcasts. TJ's views on herbals are somewhat different from our own, and we chat about our differences as well as our two approaches to tea and tea podcasting. Of course, since we were recording this show in a bar, we had to talk about TJ's line of alcohol-aged teas (shown above), as well as the tea tasting logbook TJ produces. And that brings us back to the focus we share: exploring tea's amazing spectrum of flavors and aromas, and delving into the science, artistry and craft that goes into producing them. World Tea Podcast is at worldteapodcast.com, and you can also follow TJ on Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. If you're interested in hearing what we had to say in our seminar on industry-specific podcasting, check out a recording of our session on TJ's site here. For more information on Talking Tea and updates on new episodes, visit our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/talkingtea. To inquire about being a guest or having your organization featured, please email us at talkingteapodcasts@gmail.com. Have something in mind you'd like to hear discussed on Talking Tea? I attended Podcamp Toronto recently and did my first live recording. I usually do my podcasts via Skype and rarely do I get so personal in my show. Dhani and I shared a lot around walking on bridges that have never been built. We talk about the desire and drive it takes to build beautiful organizations. We cover a range of topics in the show. In this podcast, I interview Dhani Oks. Dhani cofounded the Academy of Lions which could be thought of as being just a CrossFit gym in Toronto, but for many of the members, it is a community. Dhani talks about how he was not trying to build a gym, he was trying to build a family. As a member of the Academy of Lions I have always been impressed with the community that was built around a gym that could easily be an exclusive masculine culture. In this conversation, we talk about what it takes to build a business. We explore how Dhani thinks about building things that have never been built and the struggles that come along with striving for excellence. This podcast was recorded over live at the Imperial Pub in Toronto. What a couple of months it's been in media land. Newspapers folding, television stations getting out of local news… all because of the Internet, they say. We don't hear much about radio, though. 1. Today we go to Podcamp Toronto and hear about something that hasn't changed in radio. There still are way too few women on the air. rabble radio contributor Kveshe Be tells us about a study on diversity in radio done by Ryerson University Professor Lori Beckstead. 2. Yes, you can do a podcast — Podcast DIY. Some great advice from rabble podcast network cofounder Wayne MacPhail from way back on October 17, 2005. Surprisingly, very little has changed. Except that we're not using mini-disc recorders anymore and the tools are cheaper and easier than ever. 3. There's a little corner of rabble that we're especially proud of. It's called The Lynn Williams Activist Toolkit. And we're happy happy happy to announce the return of Constructing Change, the podcast of the Lynn Williams Activist Toolkit. Here's a replay of the episode that went up just a week ago.
Starts with an overview of Ken's Podcamp Toronto experience, followed by a recording of his presentation: "Personal Podcasting: Who Cares".

However, even though techniques like Test-Driven Development and Scrum are widely practiced, one common complaint is that it is difficult to scale these practices. The webinar will outline the TMMi and provide a process for using environmental, technical and project context to effectively integrate testing into an Agile development environment, measuring the effectiveness of the process. The essay is a reaction to an earlier discussion of hyper-connectivity and the techniques to combat the downside of hyper-connectivity, which has convinced me that we are dancing around the bigger workplace issue of how can you stay focused on delivering real business value in an environment that seems to be designed to promote making incremental progress on lots of projects, rather than getting any one of them done. We will also have new entries from the Jeremy Berriault’s QA Corner and a discussion with Steve Tendon on Chapter 8 of Tame The Flow: Hyper-Productive Knowledge-Work Performance, The TameFlow Approach and Its Application to Scrum and Kanban. Last Sunday I spoke at Podcamp Toronto. Since I never considered myself to be a successful blogger or podcaster, I wanted to simply introduce people to the concept and ideas behind the technological singularity and transhumanism. That was the plan. But few things get me riled up more than ignorance posing as true knowledge. So, […]
It's another on the road edition of the show as I return back to the GTA for my Podcamp Toronto 12 that took place on Ryerson University, Feb. 25 & 26, 2012. Music for this episode features the song Travelogue by George Woods, they can all be found at www.famemusic.com. Other instrumental music is by the band Mr. Burns (www.mrburnsmusic.com). Well I guess this means I am another year older and wiser. I know the second part is true because I spent the weekend drinking out of the firehouse that is Podcamp Toronto 2012. I wish there were more events like podcamp where you can be immersed ideas, knowledge and wisdom for a day or two. I always emerge from these events enriched. There were a number of great presentations and I will revisit some of them on the blog in the next few days however I wanted to share my presentation. I hope to be back next year to both learn and hangout with my friends Luke and John! The copy from the brouchure: Podcasting To A Niche Market, Revisited or Podcasting To A Professional IT Audience Podcasting to a niche market is about balancing content with audience needs. The examples from the Software Process and Measurement Cast which podcasts to a professional IT audience for the past five years is used to provide examples of the additional complication of reaching a niche audience. One example of a complication is having less knowledge about the audience due to professional complexity and geographic dispersion. Questions Answered 1. How can I grow the audience for a niche audience? 2. How can you use the professional journals to target your audience and interviewees? 3. Sales tool or knowledge transfer vehicle, which work?

Welcome to our first episode! Run time: 22:23Community Divas on iTunesThis is a podcast about communities because, coming from different backgrounds, our mutual interest is community building and we wanted to share our unique perspectives. Each week we'll be interviewing people who are known for their leadership roles in different communities followed by a discussion of different online tools and their role in community building. In this episodeWe present Part 1 of our interview with Jay Moonah, a podcaster, marketing strategist, musician and a driving force behind the social media unconference Podcamp Toronto. He blogs and podcasts at MediaDriving.com. His bands are Uncle Seth and The McFlies.Connie and Eden discuss Twitter, and Connie's account being deactivated. He sees overlap between the groups. He is also part of other communities unrelated to these.04:09 The value of online communities depends on how active a group is in working towards its goals and values. For example, meet-ups or people helping one another creates value. 05:35 The value that Podcamp brings to the community. Jay points out that Podcamp is both an event and a community. He says his podcast mostly lets him talk to himself in his car. Are we surprised? ;-)16:59 Eden asks Connie about her Twitter account being deactivated. Eden was one of the first to notice the account was gone. 19:51 We discuss whether Twitter is a community. 21:35 Wrap-upOur cool theme music “Get Out of My Face” is by Jay's band Uncle Seth and is from the Podsafe Music Network. We thank Jay Moonah for all his help in getting us started! This week's show is a tri-guest spectacular with wheels playing into each of the conversations. First up I chat with Leesa Barnes who is the media liason for Podcamp Toronto which I will be attending on Feb. 24, as long as the weather does not stop me. We talk about the upcoming un-conference and what people will expect to see there. Then I have a discussion with a co-worker of mine, Vahen King, who lives life with her very own set of wheels. Lastly but not leastly it is off to the movies as Rob and I review the latest Marvel hero to hit the big screen, Ghost Rider, in all of his flaming skull glory. We talk about the guilty pleasure of seeing Nick Cage's head melt, mentally predict each other's ratings and maybe even spot a movie pirate, me harties. The song this week is Critical Mass by George Wood and can be found at www.podsafeaudio.com. As always your comments and suggestions are welcome.
