How did Ford build the GT in 18 months? Why did they create a new truck segment with the Raptor, and how has that thinking bled over to Land Rover? Jamal Hameedi is the answer. He is the Director of Special Vehicle Operations at Jaguar Land Rover and the reason Land Rover is debuting the fastest and most exciting Defender to date: the Octa. Before he joined JLR, he was the Chief Performance Engineer and head of SVT at Ford. It was under his eye that Ford made both generations of the Ford GT, decided to build the first Raptor, and launched numerous Shelby Mustangs. https://www.landroverusa.com/defender/defender-octa/index.html Recorded June 20, 2024 Head to FACTORMEALS.com/tire50 and use code tire50 to get 50% off your first box plus 20% off your next month. There was only one model and they drove it around the world to show it working. Thank you Dave, for putting us straight! NEW CAR REGISTRATION FIGURES SEPTEMBER 2021SMMT has released the UK's September New Car Registration figures and they are the lowest since September 1998. On the upside, it is the best month for battery electric vehicles. Tesla is the most registered, so a boat must have docked, with the Vauxhall Corsa being the top registered car year to date. The Spreadsheet of Doom is predictably doomy. To find out more, click here for the SMMT article. Keith Helfet, who designed the XK180, also designed the Aston Martin DB7 and had the iconic outline of the D-types in mind. An inspirational concept car then and one that you can imagine Jaguar fans like us would like to own - Neal Mugglestone was one such enthusiasts and on this episode we find out how and why he built his! Show #787   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Saturday 23rd  May 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   JAY LENO DRIVES THE TESLA CYBERTRUCK, MUSK RIDES SHOTGUN "The newest season of Jay Leno's Garage has started on May 20, 2020 and if you've been keeping updated with the beat, one of the cars that will be featured on the show is the Tesla Cybertruck." Says Motor1.com: "When asked what will be changed in the production-spec, Musk said that they may have made the show car a bit bigger than what's intended. The real thing will be smaller by five percent, although Musk has confirmed that the proportions will be the same. This kind of contradicts with Musk's tweet before, saying that the Cybertruck's width will be closer to 82 inches instead of 80 inches. But then again, we'll never know the actual measurement until the production version becomes a reality, so let's take this with a sprinkle of salt."   @elonmusk: “Reviewed [the Cybertruck] design with Franz last night. Even 3% smaller is too small. It will be pretty much this size [referring to the prototype].”   @elonmusk: “We’ll probably do a smaller, tight world truck at some point.”   https://www.motor1.com/news/424922/tesla-cybertruck-jay-leno-musk/   TRITIUM LAUNCHES WORLD-FIRST “PLUG AND CHARGE” TECHNOLOGY "Tritium, a leader in electric vehicle (EV) DC fast charging technology, has launched its game-changing Plug and Charge solution, the first of its kind in the world available to the market." Says RenewableEnergyMagazine: "The technology, leveraging the ISO15118 standard, enables an electric vehicle and charger to communicate seamlessly and authorize payments directly from the driver’s account, without the need for a card or RFID tag. The Tritium offering is the first to market and is available immediately for charge point operators to deploy on Tritium’s PK350kW DC High Power Chargers.  The technology promises to reshape the customer experience for the driver and enable the once-siloed approach to charging payments to be broken down with disparate charging networks able to interoperate. Drivers will be able to approach a charger, regardless of the charging network operator, and their charge session will be automatically and securely billed from the moment the charger plug connects to the vehicle."   James Kennedy, chief technology officer and co-founder, Tritium: "“Right now, EV drivers approaching an EV charger will likely have to sign up for that network’s system to access it and pay for the charging session, adding unnecessary time to the experience and siloing charger networks; even accounting for the ability to pay by credit card at some chargers this is wildly inconvenient,” he said. “With Plug and Charge, you’ll be able to plug the charger into the vehicle and it just charges, from your battery to your account.”   https://www.renewableenergymagazine.com/electric_hybrid_vehicles/tritium-launches-worldfirst-a-plug-and-chargea-20200522   TESLA NEXT-GEN ROADSTER’S SPACEX THRUSTERS "Standing by the flagship supercar and the newly-released Model Y crossover, Musk and Leno were recently featured in a promo video talking about the next-generation Roadster. Leno, for one, noted that sometimes, Musk’s ideas are so out of this world that he can’t really tell if the CEO is joking or not. Musk responded that when it comes to the Roadster’s rocket thrusters, he actually is serious. He then described exactly how the “main” thruster of the next-generation Roadster works." Says Teslarati.   “We’re gonna use ultra high pressure compressed air. It’s a cold gas thruster. The main thruster will be behind the license plate. So for acceleration, it drops the license plate, and behind the license plate is a rocket thruster. It’s like full-on James Bond,” Musk said.   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-roadster-space-thruster-details-elon-musk-video/   JAGUAR-LAND ROVER WILL BUILD ELECTRIFIED SVO PERFORMANCE MODELS "Jaguar-Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations make the group’s highest performance and most exclusive models, none of which have been electric thus far. However, that will reportedly change as JLR intends to launch SV-branded plug-in hybrids and full EVs in the near future." Says Yahoo News: "Apparently, the reason why the i-Pace won’t be given the SVO treatment has to do with the fact that it sits on a bespoke platform designed specially for it and one that won’t be used to underpin any other vehicle. Yet what this means instead is there will be a hot version of the upcoming XJ saloon, which will be a direct rival to the AMG version of the Mercedes-Benz EQS."   https://uk.news.yahoo.com/jaguar-land-rover-build-electrified-114000590.html   ELECTRIC CARS ARE ABOUT TO START ROLLING OUT OF THE ARIZONA DESERT "Through a series of logistical maneuvers, help from parts suppliers and a bit of good fortune, Lucid executives say they’ve been able to move forward with installation of critical assembly-line equipment such as robotic arms and precision tools including stamping presses and jigs." Reports Bloomberg: "A big contribution of good karma has come from location. Arizona did not prohibit construction work along with much of the rest of the U.S. starting in March. After completing the steel structure in February, Lucid finished the exterior walls and roofing and recently has taken delivery of production equipment from suppliers including Hokuto, a parts-mounting device maker. Equipment manufacturers based in Asia were quick to reopen after Japan, China and South Korea allowed businesses to resume operations. While the initial production volume the company is targeting is in the tens of thousands, the plant has been designed to eventually make as many as 380,000 vehicles. That’s more than the roughly 367,500 vehicles Tesla delivered last year, all of which were built at its plant in California."   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-05-22/electric-cars-are-about-to-start-rolling-out-of-the-arizona-desert     CONNECTED EVS COULD HELP POWER THE GRID: CALIFORNIA UTILITY STUDIES HOW "Southern California Edison (SCE) plans to launch a demonstration project for "vehicle-to-grid" or "V2G" technology, in which vehicles both charge and discharge power to the grid. More than 200,000 electric cars are currently on the road in SCE's service area, and 700,000 in the entire state of California, a press release from the utility said. A car with a 100-kilowatt-hour battery pack—the size pack used in the Tesla Model S and Model X—could power an average California household for nearly a week, according to SCE." Says Green Car Reports: "The demonstration project aims to see if V2G could lower customers' electric bills in exchange from energy supplied from their cars while connected to the grid. The project will also look at standardization of equipment needed to connect cars to the grid."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1128252_connected-evs-could-help-power-the-grid-california-utility-studies-how   SOLAR ENERGY FARMS COULD OFFER SECOND LIFE FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLE BATTERIES "As electric vehicles rapidly grow in popularity worldwide, there will soon be a wave of used batteries whose performance is no longer sufficient for vehicles that need reliable acceleration and range. But a new study shows that these batteries could still have a useful and profitable second life as backup storage for grid-scale solar photovoltaic installations, where they could perform for more than a decade in this less demanding role." According to ScienceBlog: "The study, published in the journal Applied Energy, was carried out by six current and former MIT researchers. A recent report from McKinsey Corp. shows that as demand for backup storage for renewable energy projects grows between now and 2030, second use EV batteries could potentially meet half of that demand, Mathews says. Some EV companies, he says, including Rivian, founded by an MIT alumnus, are already designing their battery packs specifically to make this end-of-life repurposing as easy as possible."   https://scienceblog.com/516548/solar-energy-farms-could-offer-second-life-for-electric-vehicle-batteries/   RENAULT LAUNCHES ZITY ELECTRIC CAR SHARING SERVICE IN PARIS Groupe Renault continues the operational deployment of the ZITY electric car-sharing service in Paris. From May 20th, a fleet of 500 100% electric Renault ZOE cars is available to Parisians on a self-service basis. The launch of this service, announced in March and suspended due to containment measures, is being carried out in accordance with the recommendations defined in the national sanitary protocol for exiting containment defined by the Ministry of Transport. Thanks to the ZITY mobile application, users can view on a map, at any time of the day or night, the vehicle closest to their position. Reservation is instantaneous and the vehicle is unlocked via the application. To end the rental, the vehicle must be parked in Paris, on any public square above ground and locked. A guaranteed battery level displayed thanks to the on-board technology in the Renault ZOE ZITY allows all the information on the dashboard, including the battery level, to be displayed in real time. Below the minimum required level, the vehicle is no longer available for hire and is quickly recharged by the ZITY teams.   QUESTION OF THE WEEK   Should Dyson have continued to make a £150,000 EV, or should we only make EVs realistic? It’s Wednesday 30th May 2018 and this is your EV News Daily. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening! Wherever you're listening around the world, a very warm welcome from London, UK.  Here is today’s news about electric cars and the future of transport. My name is Martyn Lee and I go through every EV article online so you don’t have to.   ZIPCAR TO DEPLOY E-GOLFS IN LONDON Ride sharing services, whether that's cars or bikes, are one way of getting a lot of people to try something - and in the case of ZipCar in London, a lot of people soon will be getting their first experience of an electric car. Zipcar is launching a fleet of more than 300 Volkswagen e-Golf electric cars in London, with 325 on the streets of the capital by the end of this year. ZipCar's Flex service means you can drop off your car whenever and wherever you're done using it, which does pose an interesting question about charging. "For consumers, car-sharing services could be a good opportunity to try out an electric car before making the commitment to purchase one. With dealers doing relatively little to sell electric cars, and automakers spending little on advertising, anything that gets the word out could be a big help" say The Drive. Wireless charging is one way to fix the charging problem with car sharing services, or so would be returning the car back to the same spot and ensuring the car is plugged into the charger before your sessions was officially over.   SIXT CEO SAYS EVS A POLITICAL MISTAKE From car sharing to car hiring, and the CEO of German rental company Sixt has been wading into the conversation for electric cars. He said a political effort to push the mass rollout of electric cars is a costly political error. “I don’t believe in e-cars, politically it’s a grave mistake,”: said during a conference call yesterday adding critical raw materials, including cobalt, were already under the control of Asian companies. “Range is still a catastrophe. You have to invest billions and billions,” Sixt said, adding that some rental customers who try out electric cars often end up stranded. If I’m wrong we’ll buy as many electric cars as our clients want us to,” said in a call to discuss earnings.   NIO FILES FOR $2 BILLION U.S. IPO Chinese company NIO has submitted a confidential filing for an IPO sometime later this year. The Initial Public Offering could raise up to $2bn. That will be used to introduce their range of electric cars, the ES8 being the first for the Chinese market, which they say is already off to a quick start with sales. NIO say "The NIO ES8 is a 7-seater high-performance electric SUV exclusively for the China market. It is a mobile living space on wheels with performance in its DNA."   JAGUAR I-PACE SVR COULD DO 0-60 MPH IN 1.8 SECONDS The Jaguar I-PACE is already a fast, well handling car, getting to 60mph in 4.5 seconds from the 394hp on offer. But what if you let Jaguar’s Special Vehicle Operations department the chance to tweak it? Product planning boss Hanno Kirner says they could make a lot quicker, almost too fast. We're talking 0-60 in 1.8seconds. “Yes, we can make it do 0-60 miles per hour in 1.8 seconds,” Kirner said. “It’s a good headline, but once you’ve done it once or twice, and lost your eyes in the back of their sockets, you might not want to do it again. I do worry that the instant torque and performance might be too much for untrained drivers,” he continued. “It may be that we have to impose some kind of restriction so that the performance is limited until they have gone on a driving course or something."   MERCEDES-BENZ ESPRINTER TO DELIVERY YOUR PARCELS FOR 93 MILES OF RANGE Not only are the number of EVs sold important to follow, but also what types of electrified vehicles, because working vehicles do far more emission-free miles compared to personal cars. "Next year, we'll see the new Mercedes-Benz eSprinter, the electric version of the German automaker's latest cargo van." says Autoblog: "We finally have the details on the new e-van. Mercedes will offer two batteries: a 41 kWh battery that delivers 71.5 miles of range and a 55 kWh battery that offers 93.2 miles of range. The eSprinter is focused on short-range driving for all-day deliveries for companies like UPS and FedEx rather than long-haul driving. The 41 kWh battery can be fully charged in six hours, while the larger battery takes a full eight hours to charge. Using a DC fast charger, however, both batteries can be charged to 80 percent capacity in just 45 minutes."   https://www.autoblog.com/2018/05/29/mercedes-benz-esprinter-ev-electric-range/   BMW I3 SAMSUNG SDI 94 AH BATTERY RATED FOR 524,000 MILES The quality of the BMW i3 doesn't just include the carbon fibre construction or the recycled interiors, but down to cell level too. The 94 Ah cells from Samsung SDI have some of the longest life-cycles available. InsideEV's say: "Samsung SDI expects up to 4,600 charging cycles at 25ºC to End-Of-Life (EOL), which in the case of batteries is the point when capacity decreases to 80% (battery still can be used, but is generally not desirable in cars any longer). Since the BMW i3 (33 kWh) is rated at 114 miles (183 km), 4,600 cycles would be more than 524,000 miles (more than 843,000 km). It’s one of the best results in the industry and it’s totally doable because the i3 pack is equipped with a thermal management system."   MILK & MORE BUYS 200 STREETSCOOTER ELECTRIC VEHICLE For many years, milk has been delivered to doorsteps by electric milk float. Sadly most of those old milk floats which ran on a bank of 12v car batteries are replaced by diesel vans. However news yesterday looks like we’re going back to the future. The UK’s Milk&More service, which delivers milk and other groceries to your doorstep overnight so they’re ready for you when you wake up, has ordered 200 of the StreetScooter all electric vans. “The StreetScooter is also in keeping with the tradition of British milkmen, who have used electric vehicles for their deliveries since 1930.” Says electric cars report… “We wanted to make this unique tradition relevant again to the requirements of today’s customers,” says Patrick Müller, Managing Director of Milk & More. “In order to do this, we need a local product portfolio, new IT systems as well as reliable, quiet and environmentally friendly vehicles. In the StreetScooter, we have found the ideal vehicle for our needs.” “As a leading innovator, we are also helping customers to take innovative paths in their own industry,” says Jürgen Gerdes, Board Member Corporate Incubations at Deutsche Post DHL Group and responsible for the StreetScooter. “In this way, we achieve sustainable success together.”     VOLKSWAGEN EXPECTS TO BEAT ELECTRIC CAR SALES GOAL ON CHINA, EUROPE DEMAND Volkswagen’s core brand expects to beat the company’s stated target of selling 1 million electric cars by 2025, a senior manager said, citing solid demand in China and Europe, as well as untapped potential in the southern hemisphere" according to a Reuters article. Christian Senger, head of electric mobility at the Volkswagen (VW) brand, says: “In the cycle plan where we again and again undertake forward planning for up to 15 years, we see that the markets even want more (electric) cars than we have earmarked.” Reuters continue: "To stoke mass demand, VW is aiming to sell its EVs at the price of conventional combustion engine cars, drawing on MEB synergies and falling battery costs, Senger said. Designed to underpin nearly 30 battery-driven models from four group brands, ranging from the Golf-size I.D. hatchback to the Vizzion sedan, the MEB platform will allow the VW group to gain savings in a production cycle due to economies of scale. VW group has a goal of selling 3 million EVs by 2025, including models from premium brands Audi and Porsche, and Czech division Skoda. Waiting lists for the e-Golf have grown to more than 12 months after state and industry-backed incentives led the model’s price to drop by about a third to about 25,000 euros ($29,020), according to VW."   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested.
