Few cars capture the essence of American performance and racing heritage quite like the Ford GT. In his book Ford GT: How Ford Silenced the Critics, Humbled Ferrari, and Conquered Le Mans, author Preston Lerner takes readers on a thrilling deep dive into the history, engineering, and racing legacy of this iconic machine. From the groundbreaking GT40 that stunned the motorsport world in the 1960s to the modern GT's triumphant return to Le Mans in 2016, Preston masterfully weaves together the stories of the visionaries, drivers, and engineers who made it all possible. In this episode, Preston explores the book's most fascinating insights, discuss Ford's relentless pursuit of victory, and uncover what makes the GT one of the most legendary race cars of all time.  This episode was originally recorded in 2017 at International Motor Racing Research Center and has been remastered for this podcast. ===== (Oo---x---oO) ===== 00:00 The Legacy of the Ford GT 01:07 Welcome and Speaker Introduction + Don Caps' Remarks 03:48 Preston Lerner Takes the Stage 04:55 The Birth of the Ford GT40 05:24 Ford's Racing Strategy 06:19 The Ferrari Negotiations 08:25 The GT40 Development 13:06 Challenges and Early Races 16:42 Shelby American's Involvement 21:45 The 1966 Le Mans 24 Hours 30:25 The Controversial Dead Heat Finish 35:05 Post-Race Reactions and Ford's Future Plans 36:22 The 1967 Season and Ferrari's Challenge the 330 P4 39:36 The Tragic Testing of the J-Car 40:53 The Mark IV's Triumph at Le Mans 1967 46:29 Ford's Exit and Legacy in Racing 47:45 Q&A Session and Closing Remarks ==================== The Motoring Podcast Network : Years of racing, wrenching and Motorsports experience brings together a top notch collection of knowledge, stories and information. #everyonehasastory #gtmbreakfix - motoringpodcast.net More Information: https://www.motoringpodcast.net/ Become a VIP at: https://www.patreon.com/gtmotorsports Online Magazine: https://www.gtmotorsports.org/ This episode is part of our HISTORY OF MOTORSPORTS SERIES and is sponsored in part by: The International Motor Racing Research Center (IMRRC), The Society of Automotive Historians (SAH), The Watkins Glen Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Argetsinger Family.

Daniel Sexton Gurney (1931-2018) was a Southern California Hot-Rodder who became one of the most successful racing drivers in the history of motorsport, with wins in Saloon Car, Sports Car, NASCAR, Indy Car and Formula One. Gurney raced for the Arciero Brothers, Luigi Chinetti's North American Racing Team, Ferrari, Brabham, BRM and Porsche before teaming up with Carroll Shelby to found All American Racers in 1964.Gurney was always seeking out men of motorsport at the top of their game: he collaborated with Colin Chapman of Lotus, engine maestro Harry Weslake, and the ambitious cadre at Ford Motor Company, who were intent on taking on the world's best.Gurney helped to pioneer the rear engine layout at the Indianapolis 500, spelling the end of Indy's Roadster Era in Champ Car racing, and AAR fielded the Gurney Eagle Formula One chassis for the first time in 1966. 1967 was a banner year for Gurney, winning the Belgian Grand Prix in the Eagle Mk1- the first Grand Prix win for an American constructor since 1921. He also won overall at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with his co-driver A.J. Foyt in the Ford GT 40 Mk IV.Gurney retired as a driver in 1970, but continued to operate All American Racers for the rest of his life, famously partnering with Toyota in IMSA-GT and CART. As a driver, Dan Gurney chalked up 63 victories over all motorsport categories, and All American Racers achieved 78 total wins as a constructor. His wife and kids were used to relocating for Mark's job, but had just put down roots in Florida. He told them that this time, they should stay put — he would commute between Florida and Detroit every week, and call home for an hour every night. “I probably communicated more with [my wife] because we were apart, than if I was there,” Mark says. “Because if I was there, I'd come home for dinner, we'd spend a little bit of time together, I'd grunt at her, and then I'd go back to my emails, and ignore the kids. Whereas, by being away, I actually had really focused time every day to talk.”Chapters:(01:01) - The auto business in ‘89 (05:27) - The business now (08:47) - Ford vs. Trump (11:44) - Becoming a leader (17:35) - The next chapter (20:01) - Relocating the family (24:45) - Bring the kids to work (29:19) - “You have one life” (33:52) - Ego and purpose (42:06) - Retirement adrenaline (45:10) - Leading with passion (48:06) - Avoiding bankruptcy (52:55) - Grading Mark's CEO years (55:12) - The board (58:32) - Electric vehicles (01:04:50) - 24 Hours of Le Mans (01:11:36) - Selling a $580,000 car Mentioned in this episode: Harvard Business School, Ronald Reagan, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, CNBC, Volkswagen, American Icon, Donald Trump, Rutgers University, Mazda, Hertz, the Range Rover, Michigan University and Michigan Stadium, Mamoon Hamid, work/life balance, Mark McLaughlin and Palo Alto Networks, the Great Recession, GM, Chrysler, the North American International Auto Show, Bill Ford, Argo AI, Chariot, autonomous vehicles, Ford v Ferrari, Enzo Ferrari, the Ford GT, Jaguar Racing, and De Beers.Links:Connect with MarkLinkedInConnect with JoubinTwitterLinkedInEmail: grit@kleinerperkins.com Learn more about Kleiner PerkinsThis episode was edited by Eric Johnson from LightningPod.fm

Ralph Moody Sr. was a major driver (pun intended) of racing innovation and design throughout the 20th century. In particular, together with John Holman, the Holman-Moody race team helped develop and refine a veritable fleet of awe-inspiring machines, from offshore power boats to the legendary Ford GT-40. In fact, serving as Ford's de facto tuning shop in the 1960s, the FoMoCo tapped Holman-Moody to design and build its entrant into the nascent NASCAR Aero Wars: the Torino Talladega. While Ralph Moody Sr. passed away in 2004, the Moody legacy carries on with his son, Ralph Moody Jr. Now an accomplished mechanical engineer, Ralph Jr. got his start by wrenching in the Moody garage. We sat down with Ralph Moody Jr. to talk all about his family's history and get the backstory behind a specific restoration project for this podcast episode.

Sam also has his own podcast on the Hagerty Podcast Network called "Driven To Fail." This inspires Jason to bring up all the times Sam "failed" while at Automobile Magazine. Jason and Sam both started their careers at Automobile Magazine at 2006, working with the brilliant, talented, and wonderful Jean Jennings. And Sam had a rocky start — immediately recognized as one of the best writers in the business, but crashed a lot of cars. There were Camry Dents, tire blowouts in a Mk5 GTI, a crunched Lotus Elise, and a Ford GT spun into a culvert.  There exist no photos of those accidents, but Jason does have an old video of his Ann Arbor steep-driveway tire test: a Range Rover Sport on summer tires vs a GMC Acadia on all-seasons versus a Chevy Suburban on winters. The results are amazing. What does it mean to really care about what you do? How much should you have to compromise when building something great? A few decades ago, John Coletti made a huge gamble to keep the rear-drive Ford Mustang from being canceled. Later, he ran Ford's Special Vehicle Team. He chiefed the programs that produced the second-generation F-150 Lightning, the SVT Focus, the Cobra R and Cobra “Terminator” Mustangs, and the first Ford GT supercar. Before we began taping, Coletti asked if we could keep our chat positive. Of course, I said—that's the whole point of the show. He smiled. But then, this is a man who once put his job on the line because he believed in something greater than himself. You'd expect nothing less. Driven to Fail is a podcast about what happens when things go wrong. What we do when life falls apart, and what we learn when we try to put it back together.

The team at Carbon Revolution is going against some age-old advice—they're reinventing the wheel. And they're seeing results. . Back in 2004, Dr. Ashley Denmead, Chief Technology Officer and Founder of Carbon Revolution, was part of the Formula SAE team at Deakin University in Australia. After building a too-heavy car the year prior, Ashley and his engineering team looked to save weight in the wheels. Their idea? Build them out of carbon fiber. . Thus, the journey of Carbon Revolution began. Today, the company designs and manufactures some of the world's most technically advanced and highest performing wheels on the planet, and one of the most advanced lightweight technologies on any car. There are more than 50,000 Carbon Revolution wheels on the road today, including on vehicles such as the Ford GT and the Ferrari F8 Spider. . From four guys in a garage to 550 people in a 10,000 square-foot facility with Ford, Ferrari and General Motors among its customers, Carbon Revolution proves anything is possible with passion. Hear from Dr. Ashley Denmead on the company's journey to success and the future of lightweight carbon fiber applications. . We'd love to hear from you. With a win at the last race the Frenchman from Le Mans discusses his 30-year racing history, Le Mans 24, and his future in the sport. He also tells us why he “couldn't keep his Ford GT.” Smith was tasked with bringing the Escalade V-Series from grocery getter to a full size, go faster SUV. The BIG V, the result of “customer ask” has 682 hp, 653 pound-feet of torque and is stopped by BIG Brembo brakes. Smith says, “launch control was a necessity.”
