Radio Essen-Stadtreporter Timm Schröder trifft Stephan Thiemann im Meybuschhof in Katernberg. Am Ende der kleinen Sackgasse stand früher das Elternhaus des Esseners. Heute ist aus der Gaststätte mit Kegelbahn und Pferdestallungen eine Moschee geworden. Trotz des Umbaus gibt es viele Erinnerungen. Er zeigt uns die Fenster hinter der früher die Küche war. Hier hat er als 4-jähriger schon die Salate für die Gäste vorbereitet. Ein paar Jahre später war er für die Kipppfanne und damit für die Schnitzel zuständig. Es gab aber auch ein Leben auf den Straßen und Plätzen in Katernberg inklusive Schlägereien, Schneeballschlachten und Shoppingtripps hoch zu Ross zum nächsten Supermarkt oder zur Grundschule. Während der Fußball Weltmeisterschaft 1974 wurde er zum Spielball der Gäste. Nach dem Sieg der WM wurde er als Kind minutenlang durch den Gaststätte geworden. Als nicht gerade "sexy" hat er das noch heute in Erinnerung. Später scheitert die Ehe seiner Eltern. Zusammen mit seiner Schwester und der Mutter zieht er in eine kleine Mietwohnung an der A40. Es folgen der Selbstmord seines Vaters, wechselnde Partner seiner Mutter inklusive einer Karriere im Milieu, sehr viel Gewalt und der Umzug in ein Internat. Nach der Schule zieht Stephan Thiemann seine erste Company in Essen auf. Zunächst mit Portemonnaies, später mit Handtaschen und Schuhen verdient er gutes Geld. Unter anderem auf der Rüttenscheider hat er einen Laden. Er ist aber auch auf vielen Messen und Märkten unterwegs. Seine wellenförmigen Geldbörsen werden sogar für einen Designpreis nominiert. Er heiratet und bekommt einen Sohn. Trotzdem schafft er es nicht sesshaft zu werden. Immer wieder zieht es ihn in die Welt und das am liebsten auf zwei Rädern. Schon als Kind liebte er mit dem Mokick durch die Dünen von Zandvoort zu brettern. Als Erwachsener zeigt er kleinen Motorradgruppen zum Beispiel die Schönheit von Nepal. Hier lernt er auch seine zweite Frau Urmila kennen. Mit ihr und vier weiteren Motorradfahrern fährt er dann auch rund 20.000 km von Katernberg nach Kathmandu. Eine Reise, die dem Motorradguide fast das Leben gekostet hätte. Bei 55 Grad im Schatten wird eine Wüste im Iran für die Gruppe zur Hitzehölle und wegen eines Bürgerkriegs in Pakistan kommen sie für mehrere Tage in Gefängnis. Hier gibt es für sie nur das Kondenswasser aus einer verschimmelten Klimaanlage zu trinken. Und das war noch längst nicht alles ... Über seine Kindheit in Essen und diese Zeit spricht Stephan Thiemann in unserem Podcast. Außerdem hat er darüber auch ein Buch geschrieben. Sein nächstes Projekt ist ein Motorradfahrer Resort in Nepal. Hier laufen schon die Bauarbeiten unter anderem für ein Hotel, ein Cafe und eine Werkstatt. Minister David van Weel (J&V) reist vandaag naar Zandvoort om bewoners te spreken over overlast door hangjongeren, al jaren een groeiende zorg. Samen met minister Heerma (BZK) stuurde hij gisteren een brief naar de Tweede Kamer over het demonstratierecht: burgemeesters moeten meer bevoegdheden krijgen om ordeverstorende demonstraties te verplaatsen, aldus de brief. Haar leven tussen 1766 en 1817 viel samen met alle grote revoluties van die jaren en zij speelde daar een opmerkelijke rol in, kende alle hoofdfiguren, correspondeerde en discussieerde met hen. Haar kasteeltje in Coppet, even buiten Genève, was haar salon en die samenkomsten werden 'de Staten Generaal van Europa' genoemd. Ze had één vijand. Napoleon. Ze kritiseerde hem en zijn ondemocratische machtsdrift rechtstreeks in zijn gezicht. Hij liet haar verbannen en de eerste druk van haar boek over Duitsland vernietigen. De eerste vrouwen in de Nederlandse politiek (1917-1927) Wie waren de vrouwen die als eersten in ons land politieke functies konden veroveren? Wat maakten zij mee? Hoe werden zij bejegend? Dit boek is een tijdsbeeld van Nederland en het verhaal van deze pioniers. Het werd ze allerminst makkelijk gemaakt, want op rechts en net zo goed op links waren veel mannen allerminst ingenomen of overtuigd van de waarde van de vrouw in de politiek. Troelstra zag hen als risico voor de komst van het socialistisme. De gereformeerden vonden dat vrouwen geen plaats hadden in de harde wereld van macht en geld. De katholieken vonden het moederschap en niet het bestuur haar ware bestemming. Maar daar trokken de politieke pioniers zich weinig van aan. Fascinerende mensen, voor de duvel niet bang. Leer ze kennen. Suze Groeneweg, Carry Pothuis-Smit, Aletta Jacobs. Maar ook Wilhelmina van Itallie-Van Embden, een meesterinterviewer die Kamerlid werd. Frida Katz, het wetgevingskanon van de CHU. Eiske ten Bos-Harkema, een 'rooie vrouw' die het cachot in moest toen ze een 'MeToo'-schandaal onthulde. De liberalen, die het meest hun best hadden gedaan om het vrouwenkiesrecht te realiseren, werden er niet voor beloond. Algemeen kiesrecht beloonde vooral de socialisten. En veel vrouwen conservatief te stemmen. Florian Illies - Als de zon ondergaat (verschijnt op 12 mei in de Nederlandse vertaling) In de zomer van 1933 was het heerlijk aan de Côte d'Azur. Maar Thomas Mann was wanhopig. Kon hij ooit terug naar München naar zijn schrijftafel, zijn romans, verhalen, essays? Florian Illies' documentaire roman schetst die eerste maanden in ballingschap en de ontworteling van de grote schrijver, zijn familie en hun vrienden in Sanary sur Mer. Hoe dochter Erika een dappere regisseur van het overleven tegen Hitler werd. Hoe zoon Klaus in Zandvoort levensmoe leek, maar in verzet een levensdoel hervond. Dik Verkuil - De ongenaakbare Bolkestein Een monumentale biografie die een tijdsbeeld geeft van Nederland in de twintigste eeuw. Van het chique milieu van de Amsterdamse elite, van dat van de studenten vroeger, van Shell als koloniaal bedrijf, van de VVD die transformeerde van nette heren partij naar volkse machtsfactor. En Frits Bolkestein loopt daar doorheen, eigenwijs, horkerig, provocerend, aarzelend tussen conservatisme en liberalisme. Trots op zijn gave van 'haute vulgarisation' die maatschappelijke thema's hielp agenderen. Maar ook tragisch. Want als bewindsman, als Eurocommissaris en als politiek leider in de paarse periode boekte hij nauwelijks concrete resultaten. Het premierschap ontglipte hem door eigen, aarzelende vaagheid. Zijn opvolging werd een drama. En zijn Magnum Opus, het boek dat hij decennialang aankondigde, werd een flop. Maar toch, wát een leven! Kevin Rudd – On Xi Jinping. Sinoloog en oud-premier van Australië, Kevin Rudd, durft het aan in het brein van Xi te kruipen en zijn ideologische kerngedachten te ontcijferen. Zo kruipen we met hem in de geest van een totalitair heerser, een man naar wie iedereen in China moet opkijken en die men heeft te gehoorzamen. Meest fundamenteel is het feit dat Xi een ware gelovige is. Het marxisme-leninisme is de enige wetenschappelijk bewezen analyse van de wereld en wie deze zuiver volgt, kán niet falen. Daarom heeft hij met drie correcties het bewind van zijn voorganger Deng Xiaoping diepgaand veranderd. LANDO: “I found a good rhythm with the car halfway through the season and I feel like I've been able to find confidence in myself, in my ability not just to win races but to go and fight for a world championship. “I've certainly had some fortune this year but I've certainly had a fair share of tough moments – especially at the beginning, [there was] a lot I struggled with and lost a little bit of belief early in the season. “More for myself at that point, it was nice to prove myself wrong in a way at times, starting off in Monaco Qualifying and a few moments after that. The second half of the season I've really been able to show to myself what I could do, what I was capable of doing.” MAX: “I'm very proud of the whole Team and I'm so proud of the incredible turnaround that we had. We never gave up and always believed we could turn things around and never stopped trying. We could have very easily just have given up, but we kept pushing, looking for improvements and always believed. This season has been a massive rollercoaster, with lots of tough moments and feelings, but I'm so proud of everyone and we have really come together as a Team. The turnaround in the second half of the season was incredible and pretty crazy that we could do that and we kept overcoming a lot of things as a Team. Today has been a lot of fun, especially winning the race in such a dominant way. We had an incredible weekend and did everything as best as we could, so ultimately I feel good today. Although not winning a championship by two points looks painful, going back to Zandvoort we were behind by over 100 points, so am very proud of what we have achieved. Of course, for Lando this is something very special and I hope he enjoys it a lot. The first Championship win is the most emotional one and it is something you dream of since you were a little kid. His family are here and I hope he enjoys tonight with his Team. Finally, I wanted to thank the whole Team in the factory and on track: we never gave up and always believed. I am very proud of the people that I work with, they are my second family. OSCAR: “Honestly, pretty good. I knew that going into today I needed the stars to align to win the championship. “Ultimately, I tried my best and put myself in the best position I could to try and win the race and give myself the best opportunity, but it wasn't to be. I think we can be very proud of the season we've had. “On a personal level, it's obviously not quite the ending that I wished for but I think when you look at the season as a whole, I'm very proud of the work that I've been able to put in and my team have been able to put in to make so much progress from last year. I'm looking forward to plenty more fights in the future.” FERNANDO: "It is great to finish the season with a strong P6 here in Abu Dhabi. Our race pace hasn't always matched our qualifying recently, so a solid Sunday here feels very good. It's been a challenging year, and I want to thank the whole team for their hard work all season.
