Maybe you've toyed with building a paid community as part of your business model. Or you gave it a shot and later shelved it because you just couldn't make it work. Start-up Parent Founder Sarah K. Peck goes deep on how she built three paid communities:How she chose the initial idea that morphed into her company and multiple highly engaged (paid) communities. Why what looks like overnight success (260 applications for 25 spots) was actually years of experiments, trials and listening to a consistent audience. How she looks at experimenting today—and why a one-year commitment keeps her focused on the best outcomes for her members and herself. The role that lighthearted fun—joy even—can play in the success of your community and your own happiness. The intersection of motherhood and business and finding your sweet spot between the two.LINKSSarah K. #184 — Vanessa Van Edwards learned right away that being an expert in behavioral science did not translate into innate parenting know-how. An author, speaker, and lead investigator with Science of People, Vanessa first appeared on Episode #96 of Startup Parent. She returned for Episode #104, in which she busted some myths about the first weeks of parenthood. Now, she's opening up about the first year, explaining that while some phases do indeed “go by so fast,” others can feel like a slog, but telling parents that it goes by so fast is not, well, helpful. We dig into the nitty-gritty of the first year of parenting, what surprised us, what we wish we'd known, and the milestones most parenting books miss. We also talk about miscarriage, and Vanessa also speaks honestly about the experience of having a miscarriage at eight weeks, and the physicality of it—many people talk about the emotional experience, but she wasn't prepared for how long it would take, and what her body would go through in the experience. Tune in to this episode to hear Vanessa's take on what the first year of parenting was like for her, how it affected her perspective on work and friendships, and also how the pandemic (and parenting) might also be an opportunity for a fresh start. Today's guest is someone we've wanted to speak to for years. In fact, she was one of the first women we knew who not only worked in tech, but also had a thriving career in it. And this was long before we started Marvelous! So, it goes without saying that Sarah K. Peck is a force of nature. She's the founder of Startup Parent — a company that focuses on the narratives we share (and more importantly, those we don't) about work, parenting, and motherhood. She's also the host of the award-winning Startup Parent podcast where she chats with incredible women about business and parenting. And it's her mission to make parenting easier in the Startup world. Because here's the deal: Silicon Valley cannot figure out kids. Sarah says it herself, and we couldn't agree more. In the world of startups where everything revolves around the new and cutting edge, children and paternity plans are still treated like unspeakables. When Sarah first got pregnant years ago, she was the only pregnant female in her startup and things were incredibly tough for her to navigate — she even had to build her own maternity leave from scratch since her company had no infrastructure surrounding it. All of that led her to the question - Where are the pregnant women in tech? That's when she started interviewing other women about their own experiences with startups and parenthood, which is how her podcast came about. In today's episode, Sarah talks about her employment history and how she transitioned to entrepreneurship, how she navigated parenting in an uber busy startup environment, the importance of representing diversity of experiences, and so much more! Here's a peek at what else we discuss: How she worked with her CEO to build a viable maternity program How she approaches money (and why she's always had two jobs) Why you earning money and resources is a part of activism Why you should be raising your rates in your business frequently  The difference between bootstrapped companies vs. venture companies And more!As a society, we've been indoctrinated in a culture where hiding kids and women at home is normal. Which is why we believe talking about our unique challenges as working parents in startups is so important!Resources Sarah K.Peck's Website Sarah K.Peck's Newsletter  Sarah K.Peck's Instagram and Twitter Startup Parent Website Startup Parent Newsletter Startup Parent  Podcast The Wise Women Council Sticky Situations (Template Guides)  This week's Joy: We can relate to both of Sarah's joys - chocolate and swimming pools. I'm super honored to introduce you to this week's podcast guest: Sarah K. Peck. Sarah is the founder of Startup Parent and I have had a colleague crush on this woman for YEARS.Seriously, she is whip-smart, thoughtful, funny and refreshingly honest about all things parenting, business, work and LIFE.Having Sarah with us this week is a dream come true for me and I know you're going to get so many goodies out of this conversation! In this week's episode Sarah and I cover:Sarah's honest experience of how she is doing as a mother, business owner and human after over a year of pandemic upheaval. Why we don't have to do things the way they've always been done, whether that is in business, parenting or any other area of life. The organic evolution of Sarah's business and how she continues to listen, iterate and grow. Sarah's radical recommendation to "DO HALF" and how to practically go about applying this concept to our everyday lives. The importance of systems thinking, looking for repeatable results and reflection when it comes to shifting upsetting patterns or maximizing the goodness in our lives. The need to deeply question and resist the larger cultural narratives of parenting and work and instead to forge our own paths rooted in our unique values and families. What Sarah suggests we pay most attention to in our work, family and lives as our country transitions out of pandemic life and into what's next. And SO much more!Even if you are not a parent or a business owner, this episode is packed with really important ideas about how to take more creative ownership of our lives, our values and our desires.
