The interview was originally recorded for the UK edition of The Spectator. Stephen Conroy, Manager of the ICBF, Tully Bull Performance Centre, and Paul Smith, Teagasc Researcher, join Catherine Egan on this week's Beef Edge podcast with an insight into the centre, current research findings and its future direction.Stephen explains how the research is carried out on progeny selected from Gene Ireland sires. Every year over 700 animals are put through the testing facilities in Co.Kildare over a 90 day period. He outlines the variety of measurements that are taken such as feed intake and meat quality such as tenderness, flavour and juiciness. Interestingly, based on the terminal index cattle, 5 stars had a feed intake of 2.5kg lower than 1 star animals and 5 star cattle had a 28kg heavier carcass compared to 1 star €5/kg  at a price of this is an increase of €140 /head.  Stephen also discussed the future studies taking place such as the water intake of cattle. Methane emissions is a major challenge facing the agricultural sector and Paul described his involvement  with the rumen predict project, the main mitigation strategies and what the work at Tully has shown in relation to methane emissions. For more episodes from the Beef Edge podcast, visit the show page at:https://www.teagasc.ie/thebeefedgeProduced on behalf of Teagasc by LastCastMedia.com

Welcome to the latest edition of the Unmade podcast. Today's edition features another free extract from the audio edition of my book, Media Unmade, which is published by Hardie Grant and available online and in book stores. We're now into the start of Act 2 - The Reckoning.Today's chapter opens up with a cameo from one of the most misunderstood government ministers of recent years, Labor communications minister Stephen Conroy. Having put many of the digerati offside with his attempts to introduce a national internet filter, few took seriously Conroy's warnings about the darker side of Google and Facebook. Perhaps we should have listened.Today I recount how the introduction of Facebook's News Feed in September 2006 changed the nature of social media, before the fast-growing machine pulled the first of many bait-and-switch stunts on marketers, and then nuked publisher traffic. In parallel, Google's AdSense was on the rise, sowing the seeds of an existential threat for publishers as the company steadily took control every stage of the programatic advertising chain, while CPMs plummeted. There was also innovation emerging in the publishing sector with a new wave of digital-first startups, and journalists developing new skills around publishing analytics Mia Freedman's Mamamia signalled a new publishing wave, alongside Sarah Wilson's I Quit Sugar empire and Wendy Harmer's failed The Hoopla. One of the great inventions of the era was Andrew Jaspan's academia-driven The Conversation, while one of the disappointments was Monica Attard's The Global Mail. But at least funder Graeme Wood was more succesful second time around, bankrolling The Guardian Australia (with a helping hand from Malcolm Turnbull). And The New Daily was another publication funded in an inventive new way, via the industry super funds. This chapter also tells the story of the wave of exits including Junkee to Ooh Media; Pedestrian to Nine and Conversant Media to HT&E.Today's chapter is free to all subscribers. Some future chapters will only be available only to paying subscribers to Unmade. Welcome to the latest edition of the the Unmade podcast. Today's edition features another extract from the audio edition of my book, Media Unmade, which is published by Hardie Grant and available online and in book stores. In today's chapter, we look back at the last time the ABC was riding high, as managing director Mark Scott and director of innovation Ian Carroll led the charge into the digital future. The chapter explores how the ABC took a lead over its commercial competitors, and the strategic approach that allowed the double act of Scott and chairman Maurice Newman to roam the corridors of Canberra to win extra funding for the organisation. The developments included the launch of News 24, the creation of iView, and the move to online news - opening a new front in the organisation's decades-long battle with News Corp which was in the process of introducing paywalls. The chapter also investigates the regulatory environment, as then communications minister Stephen Conroy sought to challenge the moguls. This included through Glen Boreham's Convergence Review and Ray Finkelstein's Independent Media Inquiry. Eventually Conroy's attempts to give bite to a successor to the toothless tiger of the Australian Communications and Media Authority was thwarted. And then came confrontation with the new Coalition government with communications minister Malcolm Turnbull and prime minister Tony Abbott kicking off what were to be years of Liberal hostility to the organisation.Today's chapter is free to all subscribers. Some future chapters will only be available to paying subscribers to Unmade. For the next 20 days, I'm offering a major discount on a year's subscription, which is available via the button below. I was just listening to episode #239 and the song at about 101 minutes was so great. I think it’s Girl in the Street. I’m a dog walker, so that’s probably why it resonated. But I tried to google it and can’t find it. Please help me! Where can I find this song and artist? Thank you for your wonderful podcast. I started playing harp this year and have found your show very inspiring!" You can find Nick Hennessey at http://nickhennessey.co.uk/. Sadly, I don’t see his CD as available. José Villanueva Music emailed: "Hi Marc!  Firstly I wanna say Congratulations!!! Your podcast is great and I listen to it as much I can. I've been looking for a song called "The Hunter Set" but I didn't find the episode where you set it. I had a tried on Youtube but they deleted the video. Do you have the complete name or your episode? Thank you so much! Cheers from Sonora, Mexico!" Tanya Sapien emailed: "Hey Marc, Tanya Sapien here, I re-wrote this like ten times, so sorry if it seems scatterbrained. I've been listening to you for years, I can't remember when or where I first picked the podcast up, and I've been meaning to write in for ages but I always chickened out, always that is until now. In your last episode a trans woman wrote in and said she's had a hard time finding others like herself in the audience, so being a trans woman myself I took that as a sign it was time to speak up. Your podcast has always brought warmth into my life from things as mundane as tending the fire pit to as exciting as my recent cross-country bus ride to meet my boyfriend face-to-face for the first time. Your chipper positivity has been a beacon of light in a dark world, and when I'm constantly surrounded by people that choose hating their enemies before loving their friends and who insist every single facet of life has to be a political statement, I'm glad I still find refuge here. There's no left or right, no black nor white, No red against blue we don't fight over hue We're just here to play so sing here all day shed your dismay in Gunn's name I say; Have a beautiful Yule today." #celtictop20 #bestcelticmusic #topcelticmusic

My wife and I are listening to episode 430 while driving from Galway to Dublin. It’s our last couple of days on the Emerald Isle and one stop is definitely going to be Cobblestone in Dublin for some amazing live trad tunes. One thing I’ve been surprised about being over here is the lack of cd shops. Back in the States we stream everything, but I understand why artists over here don’t want to be on services like Spotify. We’re going to explore Claddagh Records tomorrow and I’m optimistic we’ll find a pretty solid selection. I don’t know how much more work it is for you, but to include album links in the episodes would definitely help us in finding the artist and knowing which album to purchase. Just throwing that out there. Love the podcast, we’ve been binging it these past two weeks here in Ireland. It’s definitely made the experience that much more special." Joseph Rosenthal emailed: "Hey Marc! I've been listening for about 2 months now and love hearing the diverse styles of Celtic music and helps me expand my knowledge on artists. I was going to email a favorite local Celtic group I listen to religiously during the Maryland Renaissance Festival called The Hooligans, but I'm unsure if you've played them already since you and they've been around for a couple years. Is there a condensed archive of Artists you have shared on your Podcast available? Keep up the good work! And good on you for imploring that no hate comes to your podcast! I like the focus on the positivity!" #celticchristmas #irishchristmas #scottishchristmas

Is there anything the Gillard government cannot handle competently? That socialist monopoly, the NBN, was born on the back of an envelope when communications minister Stephen Conroy managed to obtain an audience with Kevin Rudd on the prime ministerial jet . There is no cost benefit study and the billions - over $40 billion - are all off budget. They could pour $100 billion into the NBN and it wouldn't appear in the budget. It would have no effect on the surplus or deficit. What an appalling scam. The initial NBN plan was released in December 2010 by Julia Gillard. Kevin Morgan, who was the ACTU member Kim Beazley's advisory committee on telecommunications, says that plan is now in tatters. At the time, corporate advisers Greenhill Caliburn reported that “that, taken as a whole, the corporate plan for the development of the NBN is reasonable." That report cost $1.1 million. But the NBN has achieved only 9 per cent of its rollout target for homes passed by fibre and 3 per cent of the planned connections where customers are hooked up to broadband. Based on its initial estimates, by June this year 317,000 households should have been passed with fibre and 137,000 homes actually connected to a broadband service. Writing in The Australian on 7 August 2012 Kevin Morgan points out that fewer than 25,000 homes had been passed and fewer than 4000 connected. He says this is not just a debacle. Its an abject failure by NBN Co, especially in new (greenfield) housing estates. Lessr than 20 months after predicting that 172,000 greenfield premises would be passed and 132,000 connected, 0.6 per cent of the coverage target and less than 0.2 per cent of the active service target have been met. Kevin Morgan says many homeowners will have a long wait for new telephone services. But if NBN Co is failing dismally on delivering the fibre promised to 93 per cent of homes, he says it is at least making progress on its wireless and satellite services for the other 7 per cent. That's because NBN Co has little active involvement in building either. These have been fully contracted out, albeit at considerable cost. The average capital cost of the wireless and satellite services will be about $14,000. Given each service will yield less than $300 a year in revenues; these rural services will require ongoing annual subsidies of at least $3000 a year per service. In contrast, Optus and Telstra are building far faster new-generation mobile networks at a cost in the hundreds of dollars, not thousands, for each customer. To repeat, is there anything the Gillard government cannot handle competently?

Faced with too many people paying too much for too little broadband, the Australian government decided the infrastructure was too important to the public to be left vulnerable to market forces alone. So they are building a national broadband network (NBN) for which private-sector profit and the public good are equal objectives.   Australia's NBN champion and senior cabinet leader Senator Stephen Conroy is our guest, discussing their network's origins, progress to date and lessons learned. There is much to be learned from Senator Conroy. He frequently advocates for an affordable broadband infrastructure consistent with his nation's culture of "The Fair Go."  Everyone deserves an equal opportunity to get ahead and to get on with the business of being a fully productive member of their community. Nonprofits, community foundations and public private partnerships are increasingly core tactics for communities determined to get better broadband for local businesses and residents. Senator Conroy offers good insights to making these particular efforts winners while overcoming political opposition.
