Really Interesting Women - the podcastEpisode 131SARAH WILSONSarah is best known for being the founder of the global I Quit Sugar movement, a digital wellness program with 13 award-winning books that sell in 52 countries – which saw millions around the world transform their health. In 2022 she sold the business and gave everything to charity. She is an experienced journalist and broadcaster. She was previously the editor of Cosmopolitan Australia at age 29; host of MasterChef Australia; was a News Corp journalist and columnist; and has hosted ABC's Compass, Ten's The Project and has been a regular panellist and news commentator on Australian, UK and US screens for two decades. Her New York Times bestseller First, We Make the Beast Beautiful is described by bestselling author (The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck) Mark Manson as, “The best book on living with anxiety that I've ever read”, and was featured as the book of the year on NBC's Today Show. It's published in 27 countries. Sarah's most recent title, This One Wild & Precious Life, won the 2021 US Gold Nautilus Prize. She has been ranked in the top 200 most influential authors in the world (two years in a row), and now resides and works most of the year in Paris where she lives and loves a minimalist life. And this all reads like a bit of a career dream. But there have been plenty of nightmares along the way. Our discussion on resilience I found fascinating as well as finding out (to Sarah - and probably all of us in reality), what really matters. All these findings of hers are the result of countless hours of research and interviews and one of the many things I took away from this is the importance of nature. The incredibly positive impact it can have if we just 'get out there.'Head to the link in my bio to have a listen to Sarah Wilson's episode. The book referred to:First, We Make the Beast Beautifulhttps://www.amazon.com.au/first-make-beast-beautiful-Anxiety-ebook/dp/B01N12WLAXHer other books and links to her Substack can be found on her website:www.sarahwilson.comVisit instagram @reallyinterestingwomen for further interviews and posts of interesting women in history. Substack subscribers have posed some beautiful thought-provoking questions this week. Do I suffer from a broken heart and how do I cope with it at a spiritual level? Do I stand by my I Quit Sugar message all these years later, particularly given an awareness of the triggering effect of restrictive messages? And where do we draw the line when someone we love uses the “mental illness card” to justify piss-poor behaviour. I recorded this with my long-suffering assistant Liana who I got to hang with yesterday.Access the full recording on Substack and join the conversation in the comment section and don't forget to add your questions to the AMA thread. You can catch my post about why I now distance myself from my bipolar diagnosis here. You can listen to my Wild chat with David Whyte here I mention David's book When the Heart Breaks: A Journey Through Requited and Unrequited Love Learn more about Liana hereIf you need to know a bit more about me… head to my "about" pageFor more such conversations subscribe to my Substack newsletter, it's where I interact the most!Get your copy of my book, This One Wild and Precious LifeLet's connect on Instagram and WeAre8 Hosted on Acast. Chris van Tulleken (doctor, TV host) is a London infectious diseases specialist known for his popular BBC health TV programs that he hosts with his identical twin brother (including the kids series Operation Ouch; they've won two BAFTAs). In his recent book Ultra-Processed People: Why Do We All Eat Stuff That Isn't Food … and Why Can't We Stop?, which has been a #1 Sunday Times bestseller for 9 weeks, he exposes how ultra-processed food (AKA junk food) is making us fat and sick, destroying the planet, eradicating traditional cultures, shrinking our faces and making us infertile. We talk about why Pringles are “crack in a cardboard tube”, why he thinks sugar and a lack of exercise are not the problem (!) and instead how the issue is the fact Big Food does NOTHING BUT refine their “profit-making product” to make us more perfectly addicted to it and to eat greater quantities. We also cover how to spot the worst food offenders and how the best fix for beating weight gain is to turn addiction into disgust.SHOW NOTESGet your copy of Ultra-Processed People: Why Do We All Eat Stuff That Isn't Food … and Why Can't We Stop?Connect with Chris on Instagram or X/TwitterI Quit Sugar: Your Complete 8-Week Detox Program and Cookbook and I Quit Sugar for Life are available on my websiteIf you need to know a bit more about me… head to my "about" pageFor more such conversations subscribe to my Substack newsletter, it's where I interact the most!Get your copy of my book, This One Wild and Precious LifeLet's connect on Instagram and WeAre8 Hosted on Acast. Figured many of you here would like to hear the conversation I had recently with Oliver Burkeman, author of Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management For Mortals over at the British intellectual podcast Intelligence Squared. It's one of my favourite podcasts, and so I was supremely thrilled when they invited me to lead an "in conversation” about self-help scepticism. Here's the blurb they ran: Oliver Burkeman is the anti-self-help author that everyone interested in self-help should read. He encourages us to embrace uncertainty and imperfection in a world obsessed with self-improvement and relentless goal-setting. For over ten years he wrote the popular ‘This Column Will Change Your Life' column for The Guardian and his latest book, Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management For Mortals, was a huge bestseller on both sides of the Atlantic. Sarah Wilson is the founder of the global ‘I Quit Sugar' movement, was editor of Cosmopolitan Australia at the age of 29, and has interviewed two Australian prime ministers, Beyoncé, Brené Brown, the Dalai Lama and dozens of moral philosophers, effective altruists and existential risk experts during her career. Her most recent book, This One Wild and Precious Life, won the US Gold Nautilus Prize and describes how she spent three years hiking around the world, following in the footsteps of Nietzsche and Wordsworth and emerging with a blueprint for living a wilder, more connected life. For this episode, Burkeman and Wilson come together at Intelligence Squared for an engaging discussion about the limitations of the traditional self-help industry, the importance of mindfulness, and practical strategies for leading a more balanced and purposeful life.SHOW NOTESCatch my interview with Oliver (about his book Four Thousand Weeks) hereCheck out Intelligence Squared hereIf you need to know a bit more about me… head to my "about" pageFor more such conversations subscribe to my Substack newsletter, it's where I interact the most!Get your copy of my book, This One Wild and Precious LifeLet's connect on Instagram Hosted on Acast. Saturn returns is all about embracing and finding our true path, even if it means veering off the well-trodden one. It's about resilience, adaptability, and finding a sustainable way of living that truly resonates with us. So I'm thrilled to be joined by Sarah Wilson In today's episode of Saturn Returns. A former journalist, Cosmopolitan Australia's editor, and MasterChef Australia host who has truly lived a life less ordinary. At 34, facing a life-threatening autoimmune disease, Sarah chose to quit sugar, a decision that not only managed her symptoms but also led to the creation of the global “I Quit Sugar” movement. She documented her journey and insights, encouraging others to embrace a healthier, sugar-free lifestyle. This period of transformation led to Sarah embracing a more unconventional life, choosing a much more minimalist simple life, focused on travel, nature and discovery. Sarah officially jumped off the hedonic treadmill, moving away from her successful media empire to live in a forest army shed. Her experiences, including her battles with bipolar disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder, are candidly shared in her book "First We Make the Beast Beautiful." Here, she reimagines anxiety, turning it into a source of strength and advocating for living authentically amidst life's chaos. We discuss Sarah's latest book, "This One Wild and Precious Life," which addresses the collective feelings of anxiety and disconnection prevalent in today's world, fostering a sense of community and connection. She explores the modern challenges facing humanity, including climate change, political unrest, and the pervasive feelings of emptiness despite material abundance and how a shift to live more sustainably is not only essential, but will also lead to more happiness and fulfilment. Join us in this episode as we explore Sarah's journey and uncover the transformative power of living a wild and precious life. My guest today is Sarah WilsonSarah started I Quit Sugar in 2011 as a lifestyle experiment for a column she was writing. This led to an e-book, then three New York Times bestsellers and a business that saw 1.5 million people signing up to an eight-week nutrition programme. But as time went on, Sarah wasn't enjoying it anymore. She says, ‘The business got to a point where it had gone from being a joy – creating, inventing, connecting with people – to a business concern. It felt soul-destroying. It felt wrong.' And so in February 2022 she sold off the business and its assets and gave everything to charity. She now donates the money to carefully researched charity projects that target inequality, indigenous issues and the climate crisis.Sarah consumes essentials only, has never owned a handbag and doesn't own a car. Her career has been extraordinary, she became the editor of Cosmopolitan Australia at 29, hosted the most-watched TV series show in the nation's history -the first season of Masterchef Australia – and wrote the international bestseller First, We Make the Beast Beautiful, which Mark Manson described as “the best book on living with anxiety that I've ever read”. Her most recent book This One Wild and Precious Life, is also a prize winner and Sarah has been ranked in the top 200 most influential authors in the world (two years in a row).Thank you very much to Nestlé Carnation for sponsoring this weeks episode. It was more than a decade ago now when the I Quit Sugar movement took hold and swept the world – and the brains behind just so happens to be across the ditch in Aussie, Sarah Wilson. The cookbooks became bestsellers around the world and her business was set to skyrocket – until Sarah decided to sell and donate all the proceeds to charity. Sarah's gone on to live an incredibly inspiring life – travelling and living out of one bag for eight years, becoming a leading voice and author on anxiety and hosting her own podcast called Wild. Sarah Wilson's work gives new meaning to the word ‘holistic'. She's widely known for founding the I Quit Sugar movement, but is also an author, podcaster, keynote speaker, philanthropist and climate change advisor. And somehow - every job's connected. One of the threads linking everything Sarah does is anxiety. Whether it's nixing sugar from her diet to promote better mental health, or advocating for more walking, Sarah's constantly exploring methods for living (and thriving) with anxiety. She shares how the right philosophy turns anxiety into a superpower, and her go-to, day-to-day hacks and habits for managing her mental health. Here at WellBeings, we have been fans of Sarah Wilson for many years. A New York Times best-selling author, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and activist, for those unfamiliar with her work, she was formerly the editor of Cosmopolitan magazine, a news journalist, as well as host of Masterchef Australia. She's written 11 cookbooks including the international phenomenon, ‘I Quit Sugar' which sparked a movement that has helped millions in over 130 countries, making her a household name around the world. Since then though, that world we live in has become a lot more complex; climate change, loneliness, the question of how we all live more sustainably, and that's nothing on the last few years. So what shows up for most of us is burnout, stress, and of course anxiety. And Sarah's trying to put her finger on why, in a time when we're more interconnected than ever, we are feeling so disconnected, fractured. She has a theory, “Where the real loneliness sits is that we feel lonely from ourselves, so we feel disconnected from a relationship with ourselves, but we also feel disconnected from nature, and what I call the matrix of life, a sense of meaning, a belonging to something larger than ourselves.”In some ways, Sarah is letting us tag along on her own journey of growth and spiritual discovery, picking up where she finished off in her last book. She is now on a mission to try and help us find a way back together, to find a way to connect us back to what matters, to the life we feel we ought to be living and the world we live in. She started her journey in nature, hiking solo around the world and writing as she went, returning home just as the pandemic hit. Sarah withdrew to a remote cabin in Northern NSW to finish the book within the frame of the new normal, and it changed and grew into something bigger than even she could have anticipated. Sarah Wilson was a huge media personality she created "I Quit Sugar book” which became a movement. She gave it all up to be a part of a greater movement. The climate crisis. This is a conversation we need to have around taking responsibility for ourselves, climate change, how scary the world really is right now and that there is something we can actually do about it. It's a bit of a departure from our usual episodes but an important one.Follow Sarah on Instagram @_sarahwilson_ and her website www.sarahwilson.comJoin the community and go 'deeper' with Zoe by subscribing at apple.co/thedeep to gain access to exclusive bonus episodes, early access and ad free listening to regular episodes and extra juicy content from Zoe.Credits:Joanne Helder - ProducerCaleb Jacobs - MusicTash Todd-Williams, Word of Mouth Digital - Digital Strategic PartnerPlease DM us your thoughts and burning questions to @whatsthedeep or head to zoemarshall.com/thedeep.The Deep is a place for you. Welcome to the latest edition of the Unmade podcast. Today's edition features another free extract from the audio edition of my book, Media Unmade, which is published by Hardie Grant and available online and in book stores. We're now into the start of Act 2 - The Reckoning.Today's chapter opens up with a cameo from one of the most misunderstood government ministers of recent years, Labor communications minister Stephen Conroy. Having put many of the digerati offside with his attempts to introduce a national internet filter, few took seriously Conroy's warnings about the darker side of Google and Facebook. Perhaps we should have listened.Today I recount how the introduction of Facebook's News Feed in September 2006 changed the nature of social media, before the fast-growing machine pulled the first of many bait-and-switch stunts on marketers, and then nuked publisher traffic. In parallel, Google's AdSense was on the rise, sowing the seeds of an existential threat for publishers as the company steadily took control every stage of the programatic advertising chain, while CPMs plummeted. There was also innovation emerging in the publishing sector with a new wave of digital-first startups, and journalists developing new skills around publishing analytics Mia Freedman's Mamamia signalled a new publishing wave, alongside Sarah Wilson's I Quit Sugar empire and Wendy Harmer's failed The Hoopla. One of the great inventions of the era was Andrew Jaspan's academia-driven The Conversation, while one of the disappointments was Monica Attard's The Global Mail. But at least funder Graeme Wood was more succesful second time around, bankrolling The Guardian Australia (with a helping hand from Malcolm Turnbull). And The New Daily was another publication funded in an inventive new way, via the industry super funds. This chapter also tells the story of the wave of exits including Junkee to Ooh Media; Pedestrian to Nine and Conversant Media to HT&E.Today's chapter is free to all subscribers. Some future chapters will only be available only to paying subscribers to Unmade. For just one more day, I'm offering a major discount on a year's subscription, which is available via the button below. That price will not be repeated.Audio production on Media Unmade comes courtesy of Abe's Audio, the people to talk to about voiceovers, corporate videos and commercials. As ever, I welcome your thoughts to letters@unmade.media, or via the ugly brown comment button below.Have a great Friday.Toodlepip…Tim BurrowesProprietor - Unmadeletters@unmade.media This is a public episode. Sarah Wilson is the founder of the I Quit Sugar empire. After enjoying huge success, she closed up her business in 2018, gave her money to charity, and embarked on a three-year hike across the world to reconnect herself with nature and engage in discerning thought. Speaking with experts along the way, Sarah questioned the demise of meaningful connection. Connection with ourselves, with other people, and with our lives, and why we retreat into disconnect and turn to distractions that ultimately derail our lives away from what really matters.Drawing on science, literature, philosophy, and her own personal journey, Sarah's book This One Wild and Precious Life aims to highlight why we've arrived into 2021 feeling exhausted and disconnected and overwhelmed by global crises. She swings the anxieties around to find positive solutions that can be enjoyed by regular people at a granular scale. Sarah's dialogue is both captivating and important, and leaves the listener in self-reflective thought. How do we maintain calm and peace when the world is falling apart? Should we maintain calm and peace when the world is falling apart?Brought to you by: Antonia Prebble & Roar CollectiveHost: Antonia PrebbleProduced by: Antonia Prebble & Roar Collective

About our guest, Michele Chevalley Hedge: Michele Chevalley Hedge was previously a marketing manager, so she truly understands the needs of time-poor corporate executives who, family or not, want health but not hassle. Health magazine editors often introduce her as “the modern-day nutritionist – the one who likes a bit of wine and coffee.” She is not Paleo Pete, or I Quit Sugar but perfectly placed somewhere in the healthy middle. Michele's clinical practice and experience allow her to share stories of patients and their nutritional transformation, which give the audience goosebumps – the kinds of stories that can only be heard if you are at the coal face with clients. Women who say their addiction to food caused their divorce; executives who say they don't like going to the boardroom without her five top tips; and politicians, and their families, who come to her wellness retreats. Recognizing her sensible approach to nutrition, four years ago, Wiley Publishing commissioned Michele to write Beating Sugar Addictions for Dummies. Every week, Michele works with major banks in Australia – Westpac, CBA, ANZ, HSBC, and corporations like Apple, Dropbox, Dexus, News.com, MFAA, Women in Focus, ACCOR, Westfield, Department of Defence, Tourism Portfolio, Heart Research Australia, Cure Cancer, and schools and education events. She is the keynote speaker for the Heads of Schools of Australia and the Positive Schools Conference in Hong Kong. Michele is also an ambassador for Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution and the launch of THAT SUGAR FILM. Michele is the Nature Care College Ambassador, Cure Cancer Ambassador, and Heart Research Institute Ambassador and consults for 100's on international corporations. She recently sat alongside the Dalai Lama at a conference where she presented on ‘Vitality, Energy and Serotonin – It's all in Your Food.' Mental health and nutrition research is her passion, and she often declares, “It makes the New Yorker come out in her.” SPECIAL DISCOUNT CODE FOR LISTENERS: use the code: 25%offLSL when signing up to Michelle's Low Sugar Lifestyle Program Connect with Michele: Website Facebook Instagram LinkedIn Twitter Youtube Are you new to The Job Hunting Podcast? TRANSCRIPT:Just a reminder that Very Special Episodes come to you every 11 episodes & they’re a bit more casual, behind the scenes, off topic, and I always have a good time ;)Today is a Very Special Episode, which means I’m sharing my favorite things at the moment and answering YOUR questions! And then toward the end of the episode I’m going to share an important tool for tapping into your intuition so your business can grow and you can just feel all-around amazing.Let’s start with favorite things.Favorite things:These past few weeks have been, let’s just say, intense... And I’m recording in real time right now so, if you’re listening to this near the publish date - April 22nd… then maybe you feel this too.We actually just found out that our tiny chihuahua mix Iki may have to get surgery so my ears are perked for healing magick or pet-centered magick to help him heal. If you know of anything, please DM me on Instagram...Anyways, I’ve really been relying on my self-care and taking time for the things that have been speaking to my heart.I finally found a massage therapist that’s walking distance from our apartment that is fantastic & specializes in working on local people instead of tourists. That feels pretty big. Favorite Thing #1: This One Wild and Precious Life: The Path Back to Connection in a Fractured WorldMy most favorite thing right now is Sarah Wilson’s new book, This One Wild and Precious Life: The Path Back to Connection in a Fractured World. This was a book that I was so sad to complete.I’ve been a Sarah Wilson fan girl for years. I found her with her I Quit Sugar movement & empire, and then was blown away by her book, First, We Make the Beast Beautiful: A New Story about Anxiety. The audiobook is free to listen to This One Wild and Precious Life if you have a scribd account so please, go listen. Favorite Thing #2: Simple Shui Group ConsultI’m taking a feng shui group course with episode 34 guest, Amanda Gibby Peters of Simple Shui. It’s good. It’s a deeper than surface level dive into feng shui with lots of room to asked personalized questions about our spaces. And I wanted to share on one of the lessons. She gives an entire lesson to CLUTTER.We all know it’s not good. But we all have it, right?? (Or at least most of us.)Some practical tips Amanda gave was to ask these questions before buying something or bringing something home:Will this fill an immediate need?Do I have the time & energy to maintain this?Am I willing to let go of something else to get this?So good. Favorite Things #3: Somatic DecolonizationThis last month I hired Lettie Sullivan of the Goddess Ministry to lead my team through somatic decolonization work. It’s been something that’s become blaringly obvious that it’s needed in the last couple months & I was so grateful to hire her at the end of March because a lot of shit got kicked up this month. Having Lettie to guide us in real time was really really useful. If anyone hasn’t really dug into anti-racism work feel free to steal Lettie’s advice & read or listen to My Grandmother's Hands: Racialized Trauma and the Pathway to Mending Our Hearts and Bodies. It’s a beautiful, compassionate, heart-opening book. There are so many good quotes too, so here are a few.“A key factor in the perpetuation of white-body supremacy is many people’s refusal to experience clean pain around the myth of race. Instead, usually out of fear, they choose the dirty pain of silence and avoidance and, invariably, prolong the pain.” ― Resmaa Menakem“Years as a healer and trauma therapist have taught me that trauma isn’t destiny. The body, not the thinking brain, is where we experience most of our pain, pleasure, and joy, and where we process most of what happens to us. It is also where we do most of our healing, including our emotional and psychological healing. And it is where we experience resilience and a sense of flow.” ― Resmaa Menakem“Especially want to draw white Americans’ attention to this. White fragility is a lie, a dodge, a myth, and a form of denial. White Americans can create culture that confronts and dismantles white-body supremacy. Any suggestion that they are unable to rise to this challenge is a lie. White Americans are anything but helpless or fragile; they are (of course) precisely as capable as other human beings. But they need to refuse to dodge the responsibility of confronting white-body supremacy—or the responsibility of growing up.” ― Resmaa Menakem“We will not end white-body supremacy- or any other form of human evil- by trying to tear it to pieces. Instead, we can offer people better ways to belong, and better things to belong to. Instead of belonging to a race, we can belong to a culture. Each of us can also build our own capacity for genuine belonging.” ― Resmaa MenakemAnd obviously, check out Lettie’s work and many offerings at www.lettiesullivan.com or @goddessministry on Instagram. I’m having such a hard time finding the perfect person and I don’t know where to look.My favorite ones are:Ask for referralsAligned FB groupsAsk your audienceI have a ridiculously thorough guide within the Alchemical Business Intensive for hiring and it has been SO FUN to have those in the group who are ready for their first hire to manifest their dream VA or OBM!!Magical answer:Work on your resistance to being supported or sisterhood woundsFeng shui: Love & relationships gua & Helpful people guaHow can I make sure my business isn’t getting fucked over by the IG algorithm?Consistent postingMay have to modify your message if it’s overtly sex relatedSuggest growing email list or content marketing or YouTube rather than relying on companies with ever-changing algorithmsAnd to close this out...8 Phases of the Moon:If you haven’t yet, I really recommend downloading our free guide, the 8 Phases of a Numinous Launch. It’s all about how you can use the moon’s phases for each of your launches to empower you and make sure you are taking time to also reset and recoup after a crazy season in your business. This month, I’ve been guiding the women in the Alchemical Business Intensive through rituals based on each phase of the moon. And multiple women have come to me saying they feel so much more intuitive and connected to not only nature and the world, but also to their business and their mission because they are taking this time to really connect with the moon on a somatic level. So I highly highly recommend downloading the 8 Phases of a Numinous Launch because this stuff is important, guys. This could totally transform your next launch. And I’m all about making your business more efficient and productive, but such a big part of that is taking time to reset. Just like the moon does. And you can get that guide at thedirtyalchemy.com/phases. And again, it’s totally free so you don’t have an excuse not to download it. Go do that now.So thank you so much for joining me for another Very Special Episode. Next week we have a really exciting episode where I’m interviewing Natalie Olson, the Numerology Chick, about how to use numerology in your business, and I promise you don’t want to miss that. So make sure you subscribe to the podcast. And while you’re here, I invite you to rate and review the podcast, this helps other magical business owners find us, and I will be so grateful to you for doing that. That’s all for today, see you next Thursday!
