The Hemp Show in Three Acts: A Café, a Workshop and a Reckoning

Lancaster Farming Industrial Hemp Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 22, 2025 42:12

This week's episode of the Lancaster Farming Industrial Hemp Podcast unfolds in three acts, each exploring a different facet of the growing hemp industry — from a café built on hemp-based food, to a hands-on construction training, to a linguistic deep dive into the meaning of the word hemp. Act 1: A Hemp Café in Mount Pleasant The show begins with a conversation with longtime hemp entrepreneur Cindy Amick, whose new endeavor is the Planet Hemp Café, which opens June 7 in Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania. The café aims to showcase the full potential of hemp in everyday life  —from food and drinks to menus, uniforms and even countertops. The menu centers on edestin protein derived from hemp hearts and used to create hemp-based meats, cheeses, dressings and baked goods. The café is designed to be a prototype for a future franchise model, with plans to expand into Hempfield Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, using American-grown hemp throughout its operations. Act 2: Learning Hempcrete, the Hands-On Way In early May, Americhanvre Cast Hemp hosted a hempcrete workshop at its headquarters in Barto, Pennsylvania. Attendees traveled from around the country to train on the Ereasyy spray-applied hempcrete system, an innovation originally developed in France by Damien Baumer, who was the lead instructor at the workshop. The event highlighted both the technical capabilities of the spray system and the growing interest in hemp-based construction solutions nationwide. Act 3: Reclaiming the Word “Hemp” The final act explores the evolving — and sometimes confusing — definition of the word hemp. Drawing from historical texts like Jack Herer's "The Emperor Wears No Clothes," the 1913 USDA Yearbook, and a 1938 Popular Mechanics article, the segment makes a compelling case: historically and agriculturally, hemp has always referred to the fiber and grain parts of the cannabis plant, not the flower or its resin. The episode argues that lumping intoxicating cannabinoids under the hemp banner dilutes its meaning and undermines the emerging fiber and grain sectors. As host Eric Hurlock puts it: “If everything is hemp, then nothing is hemp.” Learn more: Planet Hemp Café http://planethempcafe.com/ Americhanvre https://americhanvre.com/ USDA Yearbook 1913 – Hemp by Lyster Dewey (PDF) https://naldc.nal.usda.gov/download/IND43743691/PDF Jack Herer's "The Emperor Wears No Clothes" https://jackherer.com/thebook Popular Mechanics (1938): “New Billion-Dollar Crop” https://hempology.org/PM1938Article.html News Nuggets: Ukraine opens major hemp processing facility https://www.forbes.com/sites/dariosabaghi/2025/05/19/ukraine-launches-largest-industrial-hemp-processing-plant University of San Diego study: Hemp vs. cotton https://digital.sandiego.edu/ksb-sscm/10 Victory Hemp Foods expands Kentucky operations https://www.foodbusinessnews.net/articles/28149-victory-hemp-foods-adds-processing-capacity Calendar Events June 20 – PA Fibershed tour at Buck Mason Mill https://pafibershed.org/events/buckmasontour June 26–27 – NIHH Hemp Building Workshop – IL https://nihh.org/ July 15–17 – Global Hemp Fiber Summit – NC https://globalhempfiber.textiles.ncsu.edu/ Thanks to our Sponsors HEMI – Hemp Education & Marketing Initiative https://hempinitiatives.org/ Bish Enterprises – FiberCut Harvester https://bishenterprise.com/

Dauphin County officials admit a 911 dispatcher did not appropriately escalate a call in accordance with county policy, early Sunday morning, April 13th, an hour after an arson attack on the Governor's Residence. Campgrounds, boat ramps, welcome centers and other recreational facilities run by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in six states are being closed or seeing hours reduced due to funding cuts by the Trump administration. The cuts include Blue Marsh Lake located near Reading, in Berks County. Mike Sullivan’s nearly decade-long tenure running the Pittsburgh Penguins is over. The team announced Monday that it was parting ways with the two-time Stanley Cup winning coach just over a week after the Penguins missed out on the playoffs for a third straight season. Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it

In 1978, along the shoreline of the Potomac River in Westmoreland County, Virginia, people began to see…something…out in the water. Whatever it was, it seemed snakelike. But then all such sightings ended–until, over a period of years in the early 1980s, sightings proliferated around Kent Island, situated in the very middle of the Chesapeake, the eastern end of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. The “monster” was soon named “Chessie”, and perhaps because of the cute name was characterized as being a friendly monster; and while no biological traces of it were ever discovered, “Chessie” became an icon of the environmental movement to save the bay.  But what was the context for Chessie's sightings?  What might suburbanization and taking recreation as seriously as labor have to do with seeing monsters in the water? And why did so many (including, as best as I can remember, myself) need to believe that Chessie was real?  With me to discuss Chessie, and her life and times is Eric Cheezum, an independent historian, a resident of Maryland's eastern shore, and the author of Chessie: A Cultural History of the Chesapeake Bay Sea Monster, which is–not surprisingly–the subject of our conversation today. For Further Investigation David Halperin, Intimate Alien: The Hidden Story of the UFO James Elkins, The Object Stares Back: On the Nature of Seeing Hal Rothman, Devil's Bargains: Tourism in the Twentieth Century American West WBAL-TV: "The legend of 'Chessie' is alive and well 35 years later" The Chesapeake Conservation Partnership on the sightings and importance of  "Chessie: The Chesapeake Bay Sea Monster"

This week on Sasquatch Experience…In 1973, residents of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, experienced a rare and bizarre phenomenon known as the “double flap,” a series of events involving sightings of both UFOs and Bigfoot creatures. The first encounter with Bigfoot occurred in December 1972, when residents of Greensburg reported seeing a hairy, bipedal creature chasing their neighbor's two dogs in the middle of the day. The following month, glowing spheres of pure white light were reported hovering in the sky, from which shards of luminous material fell toward the ground. This “double flap” was reported in nine counties, an area spanning over eighty miles!Stan Gordon, an electronics technician in his twenties, led the investigation into these events. He formed a ufology group based in Westmoreland County, which proved invaluable to the police as they became inundated with reports. The “double flap” of 1973 is a fascinating and mysterious event that continues to intrigue paranormal enthusiasts to this day.PLEASE RATE AND REVIEW ON ALL PLATFORMS: YouTube, Facebook, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher Radio, Spreaker, or wherever you listen!SASQUATCH EXPERIENCE, SASQUATCH EXPERIENCE CLASSICS, & SASQUATCH EXPERIENCE: STILL SEARCHING are brought to you by Sean Forker, Henry May, Vance Nesbitt, Matt Arner, and James Baker.
