About Joe. Joe (Yossi) Berko is the founder and president of Berko & Associates, a multidisciplinary brokerage firm that specializes in investment sales, structured finance, and syndication advisory. Joe began his real estate career in 1995 in commercial real estate investment banking and financing. He quickly emerged as a top producer in his field, arranging competitive debt yields for his clients. In 2005, Joe formed Berko & Associates. A strong believer in giving back to one’s community, Joe donates his time and support to several philanthropic organizations. Joe currently resides in Lower Manhattan with his wife and two boys. The William and Anita Newman Vertical Campus of Baruch College is officially dedicated on June 22, 2005. Baruch College President Kathleen Waldron hosts the celebration and recognizing William and Anita Newman as "one of the most generous and selfless families in the history of New York higher education." Matthew Goldstein, Chancellor, City University of New York, makes remarks on William and Anita's vision, leadership and commitment; and shares his personal reflection on the couple. Other speakers include Henry Wollaman, Director of Steven L. Newman Real Estate Institute; David Gallagher, Vice President for College Advancement; and Larry Zicklin, President of Baruch College Fund. William Newman makes the closing remarks at the end of the ceremony.

The Pergolis Urban Classroom is dedicated in recognition of Richard Pergolis' contributions as Co-chairman of the Steven L. Newman Real Estate Institute, Board of Advisors towards advancing the cause of sustainability with the Real Estate Industry of New York City. Baruch College President Kathleen Waldron hosts the informal celebration recognizing Mr. Pergolis and his family's generosity and commitment to Baruch. Jack S. Nyman, Director of the Steven L. Newman Real Estate Institute speaks at the event. Mr. Pergolis makes the closing remarks. The Pergolis Urban Classroom is Baruch's first green classroom, implementing natural lighting, recycled furniture, and chemical-free carpeting, among other features. It is also the College's "smartest" classroom in terms of technology. Baruch hopes that the classroom will be a prototype for classroom space in the soon-to-be-renovated Field Building (17 Lex). The event takes place on February 26, 2009, at the Pergolis Urban Classroom.

The Steven L. Newman Real Estate Institute presents a report and a forum on the the Gowanus area that holds promise for Brooklyn and the wider city. The report "Reconsidering Gowanus: Opportunities for the Sustainable Transformation of an Industrial Neighborhood" by the Newman Real Estate Institute is released at the forum designed to inform and promote dialogue among stakeholders in the Gowanus Corridor and the wider area. Civic leaders and researchers recommend measures for creating a vibrant, sustainable future for Gowanus, and panelists assess challenges and opportunities.
