A phenomenon spreading across all demographics is video games that allow players to realistically experience farming. One of the most popular games is called Farming Simulator by GIANTS Software. This impact of this game has inspired some players who weren't in agriculture to become real-life farmers. Of course, some with agriculture ties are also getting in on the fun. Kermit Ball, Community Coordinator, takes us behind the scenes of this virtual farming world.
Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: EA NYC's Community Health Infrastructure, published by Rockwell on February 3, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Written by Alex Rahl-Kaplan (EA NYC Community Coordinator), Megan Nelson (EA NYC Community Health Coordinator), and Rockwell Schwartz (EA NYC Director). The mission of EA NYC is to support the growth and success of the effective altruism community in New York City and beyond by fostering a welcoming, inspiring, and productive hub that serves those aiming to do the most good. In support of this mission, over the course of 2022, the team at EA NYC worked to scale our community health infrastructure. The EA NYC team believes that strong community health is a priority and a crucial component of achieving our collective aims. We also believe our investment in community health to date has been fruitful and we intend to continue to prioritize and expand our community health infrastructure, as there are ever-evolving community needs and always room for improvement. In this post, we outline what the EA NYC team has been doing over the past year to support the health of our local EA community. We encourage other EA communities to consider creating similar infrastructure and we are happy to serve as a resource and partner in such efforts. We also welcome feedback and would love to learn from others as we continuously strive to make EA a safer and more inclusive community. Paid, Part-Time Community Health Coordinator Hired In April 2022, EA NYC hired Megan Nelson as a paid, part-time Community Health Coordinator through the CEA Community Building Grants program. Megan's Background: Megan is a licensed master social worker in New York State with a decade of experience serving individuals, families, and groups. She became involved in EA before it was EA, after reading The Life You Can Save upon its publication in 2009. Megan's Role: Megan advises the EA NYC team on sustainable community growth, and is available as a point-person for those who have concerns related to the NYC EA community. Megan serves as a confidential, supportive resource. You can email her here, or contact her anonymously here. Megan also helps coordinate NYC Community Builders monthly dinners (discussed below), gave presentations at EAG DC and EAGxBerkeley on self-care and burnout, organized group accommodations for EAGxBoston 2022, spoke at a university groups retreat, was a volunteer facilitator for EA NYU's Spring 2022 Intro Fellowship, and co-leads EA NYC's new Women and Non-Binary subgroup (discussed below). Megan played a central role in the creation of guidelines for the potential future NY EA coworking space and a fair and balanced system for vetting potential users. Publicizing Megan's Existence: EA NYC publicizes the existence of the Community Health Coordinator through our website, monthly newsletter, and all community surveys. We also explain the role during our events (at which Megan is often present) and encourage the community to utilize Megan as a resource. EA NYC CH vs. CEA CH: The EA NYC team continues to utilize and work with CEA's Community Health Team and the EA NYC Community Health Coordinator role should be viewed as an additional resource to, rather than a replacement for, CEA's CH work. By having multiple point-people available, we hope to offer our community members more options for reporting their concerns as well as a consistent, local resource. Weekly Community Health All-Team Calls Once a week, the EA NYC team has a 45-to-60-minute Community Health call. We created this dedicated weekly meeting in order to keep community health front-and-center in our decision-making and programming. During these calls, the Community Health Coordinator, Community Coordinator, and Director discuss a range of topics that are largely proactive, rather than reactive to existing issues. C...

This week on the Health Report, we'll hear from Kelly Miller, the executive director of the Division of Indian work in St. Paul about they work they do as a Covid-19 Community CoordinatorBut first. Children ages 5 to 11 years old can now get the updated COVID-19 booster shot, known as the bi-valent vaccine, meaning that it draws immunity from the currently circulating variants in addition to the original COVID strain. The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) says parents should get their children boosted at least two months after they've completed their primary series of the COVID vaccine. This new booster helps protect against the covid variants currently circulating, the BA.4 and BA.5 variants. Which, according to the CDC, accounted for about 82 percent of reported COVID cases in the US during the second week of October. MDH is also encouraging parents with children that have not completed their primary series to schedule their next dose so they can become eligible for the bivalent booster. The primary series is important to build up the base protection against the virus. Booster approval for the younger age group now means that the bivalent booster is available for people 5 years of age and older. Native community members can check with their local IHS clinic, the Native American Community Clinic, The Indian Health Board, the Division of Indian work, and the American Indian Community Housing Organization to find out how to schedule an appointment or visit a vaccination event. All Minnesotans can check with their regular healthcare provider, local pharmacy, or visit a state-run vaccination site. Those sites include Moorhead, Rochester, Mall of America, and St Paul Midway.Getting vaccinated against COVID-19 is one of the most important steps you can take to protect yourself and your community. For more information about the booster and where to find one visit our website Minnesota native news dot org slash health --It's been two and half years since the pandemic began and through that time, Kelly Miller and the Division of Indian Work have been working tirelessly to continue meeting community needs and to help community members navigate the pandemic as a Covid-19 Community Coordinator. In a recent interview on our program Covid-19 Community Conversations, Kelly explained what DIW's work has been like through the pandemic. “Our primary focus is usually our food shelf, youth programs, and more crisis-based services; providing those most basic needs. When COVID first happened it was a huge need for food. Our families didn't have the two-week fund to stock up on two weeks of food, because there were so many unknowns. So our first response was making sure our families had the items they need to stay home. Then we were asked to open a COVID resource hotline, and it kind of just fit in with the work we're doing to provide this information. ,” Kelly said. As Covid Community coordinators, DIW ran a hotline for community members to call in and get connected to resources. They answered calls from across the state and even nationally. DIW also began new collaborations with other community organizations to help give vaccines and other resources. Kelly says that those collaborations are one of the positive things to come about because of the pandemic. “The strength we have as a community, I think, to make sure we take care of each other. So, when we heard a family is sick and then they have to quarantine; okay well what can we do to help them? Can we bring food? Can we bring them medicines? Can we bring cleaning supplies, or give them masks? Can we be there for them to help them make sure what they need for school, or just to keep the kids busy?” Kelly said. Kelly says that as we continue through the pandemic that it's important to continue to take precautions and to reach out if you need of help. “First I'm going to encourage families to continue their precautions on vaccines, hand washing, masks and stay home if you're sick. Also, to lean on one another; have your support group and lean on them when you need it,” she said.

As we come to the end of this series on building strong communities, I wanted to revisit one of the most impactful conversations I had from last season. Last year you may remember that I released an 11 episode series of expert panels focused on various aspects of regenerative agriculture. In the final panel session I recorded a discussion with Allan Savory, Ana Digón, and Rudolf Buehler all of whom have been catalysts for for the creation of community for growers and land stewards around the world. Since this is the aspect of my work that I spend the most time on, and because the insights in this conversation have been so formative in the way that I approach my work with Climate Farmers and the European agriculture community, I wanted to revisit this discussion and include it in this series on community building In this session I hosted a discussion on building community in agriculture with my friends and colleagues at Climate Farmers, a non-profit organization working to build the infrastructure to scale regenerative agriculture in Europe. In my work as the Community Coordinator with Climate Farmers I've heard from so many of the people in our network that they feel lonely or isolated in their work and in their own communities. Despite the work of many organisations to bring together growers in various regions, many farmers still don't know where to turn to for support and connection. For this panel I was fortunate enough to be joined by three world renowned teachers and farm community builders from Zimbabwe, Spain, and Germany to focus on the nuances and challenges of building agricultural communities from their own unique experiences. We'll hear from Allan Savory of the Savory Institute and international Holistic Management network, Ana Digón from the Agricultura Regenerativa network on the Iberian Peninsula, and Rudolf Bühler, leader of the farmers movement BESH and initiator of the UN's peasant rights in Germany. We'll go into some key starting points in bringing farming communities together, and what it takes to sustain them in the long term. We go from the importance of managing communities to alternative structures, important aspects of rural priorities, and a lot more. Is there a show that you've been watching for a really long time and you don't know why? For me, this is Grey's Anatomy. The show has definitely derailed a bit from its original cast and even plot and it's becoming harder and harder to watch these days. It's hard to deny how captivating the show was in its prime and in rewatching recently, I've especially noticed all of the nuanced ways that motherhood is represented. Joining me today to talk about the good, the bad, and the “Grey” this week is Megan Vos, an amazing writer, Motherscope's new Community Coordinator, and fellow Grey's and Shonda Rhimes fan. You'll hear about the characters we can relate to most, the impact of having Shonda Rhimes as the creator of the show, and much more. Whether you're a fan or not, I think you will appreciate the characters we talk about and the situations they find themselves in. Visit this episode's blog post here. We're five episodes deep into our look at NetVUE (the Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education) in this season of the Purposeful Work Podcast, and this episode is a treat. In it, we hear from two NetVUE leaders about some incredible resources the network generates and maintains—one focused on producing scholarly resources and the other on connecting like-minded educators and scholars interested in issues related to calling, vocation, and purpose. Dr. Erin VanLaningham is a professor of English at Loras College and Director of NetVUE's Scholarly Resources Project. Erin has won teaching awards at Loras College and directed the honors program there; her own research explores the intersection between art and literature, and she is co-editor with Stephanie Johnson of the new book Cultivating Vocation in Literary Studies, published by Edinburgh University Press. Hannah Schell is the NetVUE's online community coordinator. She previously served as professor of philosophy and religious studies at Monmouth College in Monmouth, IL, where she won the Hatch Award for Distinguished Scholarship. Hannah is author of the essay “Commitment and Community: The Virtue of Loyalty and Vocational Discernment,” which appeared in the NetVUE volume At this Time and In this Place. These days, she also edits the Vocation Matters blog which you can find at vocationmatters.org.Support the show
“Think Tanks” became popular in the 1960s, and even more so in the 1980s as a way for experts to research and develop ideas for policy and change. But if we spend all our time thinking instead of taking action, what good are we doing? This week on the podcast, Don Soifer and Ashley Campbell of Nevada Action for School Options are sharing how their Action Tank is actually doing the work. What if we focused on meeting each individual students' needs, instead of trying to fit kids into a prescribed system? Building partnerships is the way to do this affordably and Nevada Action has figured out how to do just that. Everyone is working so hard to support families and kids, and it shouldn't have to cost families financially to give their kids what they need. Listen in to hear how one organization is doing it right and finding ways to impact even more families. About Don Soifer: Don Soifer is President of Nevada Action for School Options, a nonpartisan “action tank” he founded in 2017 to support the growth of diverse choices of rich, high-quality and personalized educational opportunities for all students. Prior to moving to Nevada, he served as Executive Vice President of the Lexington Institute, a nonpartisan think tank in Arlington, VA that he cofounded in 1998. Soifer directed the institute's education and other domestic-policy research programs. He also created and ran the Lexington Education Leadership Award Fellowship, the nation's first national fellowship for school district leaders supporting personalized learning with technical partners Education Elements. Soifer has built a record as one of the nation's most accomplished charter school authorizers. He served an unprecedented three mayor-appointed, Council-confirmed terms on the District of Columbia Public Charter School Board beginning in 2008. He was widely regarded as a driving force transforming one of the nation's most successful charter authorizers as it instituted systems for prioritizing quality for the 120+ schools overseen, via a new national model accountability framework, equity, transparency and responsible authorizing. He subsequently served as a board member on the Nevada State Public Charter School Authority, appointed by the State Board of Education, from 2019-2021, during which time he played an instrumental role driving the agency's focus on quality schools and equitable opportunity. He has been a fellow with the Aspen-Pahara Institute Education Fellowship since 2018. Soifer has also served as a strategy consultant for companies, including Fortune 100 companies, across multiple economic sectors. Soifer's research has been published and discussed in many of the nation's most influential news publications and policy journals, and cited by policy decisionmakers at all levels of government, including the U.S. Supreme Court. He has testified before the U.S. Congress on several occasions, in official hearings of various federal and state agencies and legislatures, and has appeared regularly on television and radio programs around the country. About Ashley Campbell: Ashley Campbell is Chief of Staff at Nevada Action for School Options. Before coming to Nevada Action for School Options, Ashley was the Assistant Director for The Pinecrest Foundation and the Community Coordinator for Pinecrest Academy, Horizon Campus. Ashley oversaw many initiatives, including teacher initiatives geared towards teacher retention and addressing the teacher shortage. In addition, Ashley worked in project development, raising funds for underserved students and student scholarships. As Community Coordinator, Ashley was responsible for implementing many programs at Pinecrest Horizon, such as annual block parties and family nights. She was instrumental in increasing enrollment by 7% in 2019. Before joining Pinecrest, Ashley worked in the independent film market as both an actress and producer. Producing films gave Ashley experience in leading multiple teams, as well as overseeing projects with a variety of budgets. Working as an actress provided Ashley the opportunity to learn from industry professionals, such as Matt Damon and Elijah Wood. Ashley is committed to improving education in Nevada, and firmly believes that the best way to do that is to ensure that educational opportunities not only exist, but thrive.
