Why do we create on the walls around us? From French cave paintings created some 17,000 years ago to political graffiti on the streets of Pompeii, humanity has always longed to make art for everyone to see. Whether commissioned or not, the art we share is essential to who we are. There's no better place to see this in practice than in Philadelphia. For this weeks podcast I got to digitally sit down with Conrad Benner of the Streets Dept. This was an amazing and full conversations and I got to learn about how Conrad started his blog and how it grew into a platform to promote local artists and a tool for social change. Conrad is Philly native who started his blog just as a passion project but soon found himself forming relationships with the Philadelphia's prominent streets artist. As the years went on his blog grew in popularity and eventually he was able to focus on it full time. Benner was interested in finding ways that his platform could both be a part of the larger conversation about art in a public space and affect social change. He has worked on various projects like: #AmICutOut, a pop-up art installation created with Covenant House Pennsylvania to help raise awareness and money to end youth homelessness in Philadelphia, and Signs of Solidarity, an inauguration day public art protest in opposition to hate and in protest of any and all that embolden divisiveness. Conrad has also started his own podcast where he sits down with the creative minds shaping Philadelphia and beyond. He talks to everyone from street artist to local politicians and for the last season he was able to take the podcast on the road. I love his interview style and along with the local leaders he has interviewed. We ended the episode with me in full amazement of what Conrad has achieved so far and excited for his next projects.

Conrad Benner is the creator of Streets Dept, an online platform that highlights street art. It includes a photoblog, a podcast, and an Instagram account with over 140,000 followers. In this episode, you’ll hear how documenting street art wasn’t always the plan for Conrad. But, once a life-changing bike accident forced him to commute by foot, he began noticing the overflow of public art around him. And so, he began learning: about the street art scene, about the rules, about the people, about the ethics, about who the artists are. As his platform grew in size and influence, Conrad began using it to fight for change in Philadelphia. For instance, back in 2014 when SEPTA made the subways run overnight on weekends - that was in large part thanks to him. Today, he continues to drive progress in the city, with a focus on protecting our public spaces from corporate intrusion. Support Philly Who? But Conrad isn't limited to art documentation, his blog is a "purpose driven" one and his belief that art can motivate and effect social and political change is obvious. That's enough from me though, you can listen to the episode! My conversation with Conrad was recorded a while back but his thoughts on politics, art, and Philadelphia we found important to hear. Conrad Benner is easily one of the most gifted, artistic, creative, and passionate individuals I am still getting to know. Judging by his Instagram content, Conrad is a huge fan of street art, but more specifically Philadelphia street art. His photography consists of beautiful images of the city skyline, random streets with perfect shading and lighting, and even the occasional people walking around their natural habitat. If you would like to get inside the creative mind of Conrad, you can follow his blog called StreetsDept. Whats unique about StreetsDept. is the the fact that it's not ad driven. The content is driven based on current trends and what's going on throughout the fun city of Philadelphia. StreetsDept.'s content has been been around for over 5 years now. He is currently working on a new artist interview series with Neighborhood Films and Paradigm design. Although rarely featured behind the camera, Conrad has been featured Technically Philly, PhillyVoice, PhillyMag and much more. Here are Conrad's 3 pieces of advice he’d give to another entrepreneur (You can hear this more in the 22 minute mark): Patience and Pick Something You're Passionate About When Conrad originally created StreetsDept. he knew that he would have to work for free and work long hours in order to achieve freedom. Conrad was a freelance photographer for years, before he created his popular blog, but that never deterred him from his passion. He knew he was passionate about art and photography, and didn't mind the hustle. During his freelance stage in his career, he would do a series about fashion, restaurants, and other topics that he wasn't in particular passionate about. But with patience, he was able to begin creating content that he loved. His passions are street art and a general (and mutual love) Philadelphia. Conrad mentions that "You can affectively create your career path because whatever it is that you're doing will take time." Be consistent Because Conrad's blog isn't ad driven, he gets to dictate what his content is, making it a more pleasurable experience for his fans. Conrad mentions that it's ok to take a day or a week off. "Don't create content, just to create content." Create the content when the timing is right. Conrad states: "If it rains all week, there will not be any street art going up in the city." Philadelphia has the most street art than any city in the world and it's growing. Consistency is important because like everything else, the minute you stop, is the minute that people stop caring.
