Art Outside is back for season 2. In this episode we're yarnbombing with crochet artist Nicole Nikolich, who goes by the name Lace in the Moon. We joined her in October of 2024 to put up a 7 foot tall drag queen in Love Park for her recent project for To the Polls. We'll talk about their journey with art and mental health, the realities of an artist slump and what it all has to do with Taylor Swift.
We're back with Season 2 of Art Outside, a podcast from WHYY about the art of our public spaces and the people who create it. We're taking you around Philly to learn about all kinds of art outside. From commissioned works in Love Park and the 9th Street Market. To more ephemeral works like wheatpasting on a shuttered UArts building. As multiple art institutions around the city close, the state of Philly's famed arts world feels particularly fragile. On this season of Art Outside we're thinking about where Philly goes from here as we explore this dynamic world.

Paulding County News Podcast Sunday 1, 2023 Paulding Sheriffs lawsuit: Tyler Canaris has filed a lawsuit against Paulding County Sheriff Gary Gulledge and former deputy Michael McMaster, alleging civil rights violations. In a 2022 incident, dashcam footage showed McMaster body slamming Canaris during a traffic stop, claiming he matched a suspect description. The lawsuit contends that McMaster failed to follow proper procedures, leading to Canaris' arrest without probable cause. Canaris suffered severe injuries, incurring $73,000 in medical bills, including fractures and a traumatic brain injury. Canaris seeks punitive damages in the lawsuit. McMaster was fired from the sheriff's office in February 2023...............This from Atlanta News First New report urges police to reduce high-speed chases: A recent report from the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) strongly recommends that law enforcement agencies adopt policies to reduce high-speed pursuits in their communities. The report suggests that pursuits should only occur when officers are aware of a violent crime or an imminent threat of one, not solely due to the suspect's dangerous driving. The recommendations stem from input by numerous police agencies and leaders, emphasizing the need to prioritize safety. One of the examples they gave in this article was about an incident that happened in 2021. 12- year-old Leden Boykins was killed in the crash during the high-speed chase. He was the friend in the back seat while the driver Charlie Moore and his teenage son were in the front two seats. The state trooper pulled Moore over after following very closely for a while. He asked for Moore's identification in which Moore responded with why am I being pulled over and that he wanted a supervisor out there. He rolled up his window. A few moments later two Paulding County Deputies showed up and smashed in the driver side window and Moore decided to take off starting the high speed chase pursuit. The trooper did a pit menuver which sent the car in the other direction off the road. Moore and his son were fine but Boykins was killed in the cash..........this from decaturish.com Twin of Paulding County woman found dead in her home desperate for answers Seven months after the discovery of Jennifer Johnson's body in her Paulding County home, her family is still seeking answers about her death. The Paulding County Sheriff's Office incident report provides limited information, and the cause of death remains officially undetermined. Jennifer's sister, Jessica Renda, disputes claims of a drug overdose, emphasizing that Jennifer was not a drug user. The sheriff's office acknowledges finding drugs in Jennifer's system but awaits additional test results from the GBI medical examiner. The investigation faces delays due to a backlog of forensic tests. Jessica Renda urges the community to come forward with any information to aid the investigation..............This from Fox 5 Weather: This week it looks like we might be seeing the last of having the highs in the 80s! Former teacher says online credit-recovery courses invite cheating: A former Paulding County public school teacher has raised concerns about cheating in online credit recovery courses offered by ed-tech company Edmentum. He claims that students can easily cheat by using search engines to find answers to course assessments. The teacher, Jeremy Noonan, demonstrated in a video how students could quickly complete assessments with high scores using this method. He also alleged that school administrators allowed such cheating to boost graduation rates, which he considers a systemic issue. However, the school district disputed Noonan's claims, stating that cheating was not widespread among fully virtual students. Edmentum defended its programs, stating they are vetted for quality.............This from The Center Square FEMA systems communications: The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) are partnering to conduct a nationwide emergency alert system test. An emotional support alligator named Wally, with a significant online following, made headlines after being asked to leave Citizens Bank Park during a Phillies game. Owner Joie Henney clarified that they were invited to meet the players, not attend the game. Wally, famous on TikTok and Instagram, has been featured in various activities, including a splash in Philadelphia's LOVE Park, and serving as a visual reference for Alligator Loki in Disney's Loki. Henney emphasized Wally only goes where invited. While Wally's presence at the game violated park rules, Henney hopes for a future visit during an off-season game, as the Phillies have expressed interest. I got a truancy letter once when I know 100% I had turned in excuses for every missed day. I went in the office and complained about it. They miraculously found my letters. After that idc. I know what's best for my kids & will deal with whatever the school wants to come at me with.” Mandy Griffin from Dallas “The nurse called me 3 weeks ago because my daughter wasn't feeling good but they told me it wouldn't be excused. Love Park is officially named John F. Kennedy Plaza. It is a public park located in center city Philadelphia across the street from City Hall. It is called “LOVE” for the Robert Indiana sculpture that sat above the massive fountain at its center. It began as an unloved concrete park but rose to fame as a skateboarder's paradise before the city chased them away in the name of progress. Join us today for a stroll through Love Park.

In the final hour of today's show, Dom leads off with ace reporter Steve Keeley of Fox 29, who has a multitude of crime stories to break on the show. First, Keeley discusses a shooting of an off-duty police officer in West Norriton, after getting out of his car to stop two teenagers from arguing. Keeley takes us through the entire situation, explaining how the officer had left his vehicle to approach the teens only to get shot, further noting that the officer has since been airlifted to Penn Presbyterian Hospital. Then, Keeley updates the situation surrounding charges levied in the murder of 8-year-old Fanta Bility, who was killed in police crossfire after shooters opened fire on a high school football game. Finally, Keeley wraps up by telling the audience what he knows about a shooting at Love Park in Center City Philadelphia. After Keeley, Dom holds his Dom's Money Melody game, and discusses how we can address growing issues of crime in and around Philadelphia. Then, Senator Pat Toomey stops onto the show for his monthly check-in, largely discussing the “bipartisan” infrastructure bill. Toomey, who voted against the bill, tells why he could not vote yes, laying out the economic implications of passing such a hefty bill. Then, Giordano asks Toomey about claims made by Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick earlier this week on the show, in which he argued his vote was solely to offer bipartisanship prior to the discussion centered on the highly progressive $3.5 trillion spending bill in an effort to save the filibuster. Toomey argues that the filibuster was not threatened by this particular bill, so he disagrees with the Republicans who chose to cross the aisle. In today's second hour, Giordano leads off by discussing a Republican proposal in New Jersey that would allow citizens to present their license and registration on their phones during traffic stops. Giordano and his producer Dan debate whether this is any safer than the current way of doing things, and offer alternatives for making traffic stops safer. Then, Giordano loops back to comments made by Howard Stern and discusses the media pushback on Aaron Rodgers after he lied about his vaccination status, telling that the response is borne out of relentless virtue signaling. Then, after receiving an update on a Love Park shooting yesterday, Giordano discusses the shifting media narrative around the incident that unfolded in arguably the most populated portion of Philadelphia. Thanks for checking out the Neanderthal Society Podcast. This week we're talking to Damien Rodriguez of Nine Tails Tattoo in London, England. Damien is also the guitar player of Philadelphia Hardcore legends Punishment. His story is nothing short of inspirational… Damien and I initially met back in early 2001 when he was on tour with Punishment. His kind nature, humble demeanor and positive attitude still remain deeply intact from the very first time we crossed paths over 20 years ago. It's no secret that the Bay Area has always loved Punishment and was a real pleasure to be able catch up with an old friend. Over the course of the conversation we talked about growing up in Pennsylvania, finding art, getting into music, skateboarding at Love Park, discovering Hardcore, touring with Punishment, overcoming obstacles, starting his tattoo apprenticeship, his artistic evolution and much more… Thanks for listening, enjoy the episode and remember to follow us on Instagram.
