As John Adams (detailed in David McCullough's amazing biography) wrote in his own old age, “You are not singular in your suspicions that you know but little. The longer I live, the more I read, the more patiently I think, and the more anxiously inquire, the less I seem to know…” Yet, Adams, like Marcus, still found himself returning to a set of ageless, universal principles. They found themselves boiling things down to their essence, into real and practical ‘epithets for the self' as Marcus called them. Adams came up with these three commands, which he passed down to his granddaughter Caroline: “Do justly. Love mercy. Walk humbly. This is enough…”P.S. “Summum Bonum” is a phrase from Cicero that means “The Highest Good,”which for the Stoics meant pursuing a life of virtue. “Just that you do the right thing,” Marcus reminds us, “the rest doesn't matter.” In a world full of selfishness, corruption, and pain, we need that reminder now more than ever. It's why we created the “Summum Bonum” medallion for you to carry around in your pocket and remember that no matter the circumstance, no matter how dire or desperate the situation, virtue is always the answer. “He maintains that both have a common core in contrast to other worldviews concerning reason and compassion. For humanism, reason always has been the “Summum Bonum” (the highest good). With regard to compassion, he cites Humanist Manifesto III: “The lifestance of Humanism — guided by reason, inspired by compassion, and informed by experience—encourages us to live life well and fully.” He also asserts that empathy is a central concept in both Buddhism and humanism and quotes what he termed a popular humanist notion: “If you can't determine right from wrong, you lack empathy, not religion.” (source).” In my late teens and early twenties, there were men who tried to keep the women in their lives from me, but they insisted on meeting me and sex occurred as a result. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

And proper human work consists in: acts of kindness to other human beings, disdain for the stirrings of the senses, identifying trustworthy impressions, and contemplating the natural order and all that happens in keeping with it." - Marcus Aurelius The stoics believed that Joy, true unshakeable inner Joy, was to be differentiated from fleeting, impermanent moments of happiness from overeating, over-drinking, over fu*king, and overspending on luxurious experiences and objects. For them, Joy came from living life in symbiosis with the logical flow of Nature (Logos) (soooo similar to the Tao.) The Summum Bonum - the highest good - for the Stoics was indeed to live with a good soul (Eudaimonia) with the purpose of serving the community, the empire, and all the citizens of the world. Duty was more critical than purpose, and this is what we should focus on, as purpose has too much engagement from our Egos. And so the question is this: Do you serve your team, your products, your company, and your colleagues in a way that can bring you true joy? Remember that "Joy for human beings lies in proper human work." Freud said that too, much later, explaining that there were two essential human needs: Love (+ sex) and Work. Another story for another time. For today, focus on what really matters in your work. Prioritize in a way that makes your duties a better workplace, serving your team as a true leader naturally does. In this episode, Jeremiah and E explore vocation through the lens of the Stoic philosophy of Summum Bonum.  We consider asking ourselves a question Alan Watts posed often, "what do we desire?" or differently put, "what makes us happy?"  We then add a secondary question of, "who does our desire serve, who does it help?"  Considering what makes us happy and how we can positively impact others can be a simple way to figure out what we might want to do for our vocation or how we might like to spend our time.

CS Lewis said - Aim at heaven and you will get earth thrown in. Aim at earth and you get neither. Jesus makes clear demands on His disciples. "Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me." When He speaks of the kingdom of God He tells this little parable, "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it." Do we give ourselves a pass on that? Do we consider Him and His kingdom as worth sacrificing everything else to obtain or is He just an afterthought in our lives? How we spend our time is the honest answer to that question, not pious platitudes. He has made us His treasure, God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life. Jesus laid down heavenly crowns, equality with God, in order to take on flesh and save us. He's shown His commitment to us? How does our commitment measure against His? He wants more for you than you can ever know or imagine but He asks much of you.

Summum bonum is a philosophical term meaning "the supreme good from which all others are derived." We all have one but it probably isn't what we say it is in our life. What is the evidence in our lives for what we say is our summum bonum. We can search about for what will be our summum bonum but likely what we will discover is that will change over time. We have to look to something unchangeable for that summum bonum. We have to ask what is God's summum bonum and then align with that since we are His image bearers to the world. Jesus tells us His summum bonum was to make the Father know, the Father's glory. We have been sold a bill of goods in many churches in the 20th century in America. That bill of goods is that God's highest concern is with our health and wealth, prosperity. The Bible tells us that what God is more concerned with than my comfort is my character. His promise to those who would be His people is they can be His treasured possession if they obey His voice and keep my commandments. Jesus tells the disciples that the Great Commission is to make disciples of all nations, teaching them to obey all I have commanded you. Let's take this time of irregular life to check ourselves and re-align with God's summum bonum. Exodus 9.1-8, Matthew 5.1-11 Matthew 9.35-10.23 and Psalm 100

Each of has been blessed by Fortune. We’re alive right now, instead of 50 or 500 years ago. We were born free, and not into slavery. We’re reading this email on a computer in our office or on our cellphones, because we’re not laying in a hospital in a permanent vegetative state. Some of us are even luckier than all that. You might currently have the career you’ve dreamed of. Or you’re married to a wonderful spouse. Or you’re a world-famous expert or a billionaire. Great.Just remember what Seneca said:“No man has ever been so far advanced by Fortune that she did not threaten him as greatly as she had previously indulged him.” The opposite of good luck is bad luck. What has been given randomly, can be taken away randomly. Indeed, it happens all the time. Look at Seneca: Born healthy. Born rich. Born talented. He achieved so much...and then his pupil turned out to be deranged and he lost all of it, including his life. What goes up, must come down. If not today, then tomorrow or the day after. The point of telling you that is not to prompt anxiety or worry. It’s just a reminder. Take nothing for granted. Don’t waste a moment feeling like you don’t have enough or comparing yourself to other people. Avoid the temptation to conflate your self-worth with your net-worth or your identity with your place in society. Because all of this is temporary. All of this is dependent on Fortune. And Fortune is as fickle and as cruel as she is generous. P.S. Get all our Daily Stoic medallions in one bundle and save $57! When we look at the lives of a great man like Marcus Aurelius or a great woman like the Catholic activist Dorothy Day, it’s easy to be intimidated. They seemed to always know what to do and seemed to always do it regardless of the stakes. It’s easy to be discouraged when you hold their examples up as inspiration—it seems impossible to live up to their standards (and easy to forget, of course, that they didn’t always live up to their own standards). The same is true for Stoicism as a whole. The philosophy is so aspirational, so idealistic that, given the flaws we each carry, the idea of even coming close to approaching the life of a sage feels ridiculous. But what if that was the wrong way to think about it?What if instead of trying to be some unassailable force of moral good in the world, each of us just tried to be a little bit better whenever we saw an opportunity? What kind of cumulative difference would that end up making? An example: Anyone who has bought one of the coins in our Daily Stoic Store over the last couple years might remember that they came wrapped in a thin plastic sleeve. A few months ago it occurred to us that this was producing a lot of unnecessary plastic in the world for not a lot of benefit—so we asked the mint to stop shipping them that way. Was this some transformational improvement to the world? Was it some shockingly selfless sacrifice? Of course not. But it was an improvement in our operations that reduced our ecological impact a tiny bit. We got better where we could.Everyone has opportunities to do this. Opportunities to put their phone down and really listen to someone who needs to be heard. Opportunities to contribute some spare change to a worthy cause. Opportunities to let their employees go home early from work. Opportunities to pass on an unnecessary cross country flight or to pick up some trash or to hold the door open for someone. These are little actions. They won’t make you a sage or a saint. But they will make a littleimprovement to the world and to yourself. And if we all did them—and if we all did them more often—they would add up to real transformation.P.S. An Important Reminder To Do The Right Thing

The Daily Stoic

Our newest Daily Stoic coinSummum Bonum is an expression from Cicero, Rome’s greatest orator. In Latin, it means “the highest good.” And what is the highest good? What is it that we are supposed to be aiming for in this life?To the Stoics, the answer is virtue. If we act virtuously, they believed, everything else important could follow: Happiness, success, meaning, reputation, honor, love. The Stoics didn’t claim this path was easy, or that it would always be recognized or appreciated by those closest to us, only that it was essential. And that the alternative—taking the easy route or the shortcut even if unethical or immoral—was considered only by cowards and fools. As Marcus Aurelius writes in Meditations,“Just that you do the right thing. The rest doesn't matter. Cold or warm. Tired or well-rested. Despised or honored. Dying...or busy with other assignments.”To the ancients, if we let virtue lead the way, every step we take will be safe. In Greek mythology, Arete was the goddess of virtue. The model for us to follow—the embodiment of this idea of doing and living right. This idea is the inspiration for our newest Stoic-inspired medallion. The Summum Bonum medallion.[Buy Now]The front of the coin features an iconic rendition of Arete in Ephesus:The back shows Marcus’s simple reminder:“Just that you do the right thing. The rest doesn’t matter.”The phrase is ringed, as if by sentries protecting this essential truth, by Marcus’s reminders that virtue is the answer in all circumstances. Cold or warm. Tired or well-rested. Despised or honored. Dying or Busy.

In this final card of the decanic minors, we arrive at the Lord of Wealth.  Mercury governs the final decan of Virgo, sign of his rulership and exaltation.  Therefore the 10 of Pentacles or Disks holds the culmination of our material realm: here our worldly goods reach their maximum accumulation, and our bodies come to rest.  We return our legacies to the earth, a seed for the next generation.  We have transmuted our corruptible flesh into alchemical gold, only to begin the cycle anew. In our conversation we discuss: the final stage of the Virgo maiden's journey,  her meeting with her infernal or celestial bridegroom; Persephone and Hades, and the round trip ticket of mother and maiden. We give homage to Chthonic Hermes - Mercury the psychopomp as trickster and wizard, Loki and Gandalf.  We consider Odysseus and Argos, dogs as conductors of souls, the Summum Bonum or Great Work, cosmic constipation, death and old age, the body as the temple of the spirit, Malkuth in Assiah, discrimination/discernment, avarice/idleness.  memory palaces as the cluttered attics of Hermes, Conjunctio, Carcer, Spica, the archangel Sandalphon, Adam Kadmon, the hounds of Yesod, the flag of Winchelsea , Big Casino, the all-access pass of the caduceus, and the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. 93!♠️ Liber Resh vel Helios☀️ This is me performing the Solar Adorations to Ahathoor and Tum. I also initiate a connection with the Moon Goddess and the conjoined forces of The Sun & The Moon when they both are visible at the same time. I turn to West and look up to the sky and watch The brightly illuminated Full Moon dance in the pink-peach bleeding of The Setting Sun. ♦️ "Thus shalt thou ever be mindful of the Great Work which thou hast undertaken to perform, and thus shalt thou be strengthened to pursue it unto the attainment of the Stone of the Wise, the Summum Bonum, True Wisdom and Perfect Happiness." ♦️ /// In the background you can hear Trance to The Sun and Dead Can Dance
