For the hog industry, the fight with porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) continues, but perhaps there are things that hog producers can do to get the upper hand on the disease. What can be done on the farm to start taking control of your own destiny? Feedstuffs Ann Hess caught up with Dr. Clayton Johnson of Carthage Veterinary Service Ltd. during the recent American Association of Swine Veterinarian annual meeting in Denver to get an update on PRRS and what he sees as the belt and buckle opportunity to minimize PRRS. They also dig into on-farm monitoring, the value of air filtration systems and other tools for minimizing disease risk. For more information, on this and other topics including additional coverage from this year's AASV annual meeting, we invite you to visit our website. Ongoing training and support keeps things running smoothly from install and beyond. For more details, visit this website. AABP Executive Director Dr. Fred Gingrich is joined by AABP Past President Dr. Mike Apley, a clinical pharmacologist from Kansas State University. Apley discusses the FDA Guidance for Industry (GFI) #256 which can be found at this link. We discuss that bulk compounding using active pharmaceutical ingredients (API's) for use in food animals is prohibited by AMDUCA by FDA. AMDUCA is codified in 21 CFR 530.15 found on this page. GFI #256 provides guidance on products that may be used in food animals which is limited to poison antidotes. FDA will create a list, based on nominations, for bulk compounded products for use in food animals as poison antidotes where they will exercise regulatory discretion.  Bulk compounded products have no guarantee of safety, efficacy, purity, potency, bioavailability or stability. Compounding from approved FDA products, such as mixing two products together such as dexamethasone and vitamins into a bottle of IV fluids, is not bulk compounding. Products that are no longer available or on back-order cannot be compounded from bulk products. Veterinarians should always ask their pharmacies if they are using bulk compounding to create products since this would be illegal use in food animals. Apley also reminds us that the veterinarian is responsible for providing all meat and milk withdrawal intervals for all products prescribed for us in cattle and FARAD is an excellent resource to provide assistance in calculating a justification for withdrawal intervals. Submit your cases to FARAD at this link.  Apley discusses a document that was produced in collaboration with the American Association of Swine Veterinarians that can be found on the AABP Committee on Pharmaceutical and Biologics Issues resources page at this link. This document discusses the legalities of using compounded products, specifically ponazuril, diclazuril and toltrazuril for the treatment of coccidiosis. Veterinarians can prescribe ponazuril for ELDU as long as all parts of AMDUCA are met and they are using the FDA approved equine product. Diclazuril is a feed pellet and extra-label use of this product in feed is prohibited. Toltrazuril has no approved product in the US and would be prohibited to use. Apley reminds us that veterinarians are the responsible party for ensuring legal and judicious drug use when considering extra-label use and be aware of the prohibition of using bulk compounded products in food animals that are not on the FDA list of poison antidotes. Contact Dr. Apley at mapley@vet.k-state.edu

Animal disease outbreaks are one of the key challenges facing livestock producers and veterinarians. State veterinarians and related animal health officials at the state level play a critical role in managing outbreaks of certain diseases that could devastate the industry. Significant progress has been made in recent years but there is more that needs to be done to support the preparedness and planning effort of the states. Earlier this week, Feedstuffs visited with several swine industry professionals at the American Association of Swine Veterinarians annual meeting. We spoke with Indiana State Veterinarian Dr. Bret Marsh about his role in disease preparedness in his state, and what state health officials can and should be doing to help the industry be ready for potential foreign animal disease issues. We also talked with Dr. Marsh about the current avian influenza outbreak in the Hoosier State. You can see more of our coverage of the AASV annual meeting at Feedstuffs365.com.This episode is sponsored by United Animal Health, a leader in animal health and nutrition. There are a number of clinical signs that always strike a bit of fear into the veterinary heart –  for example, livestock that show blisters on their nose, mouth, or near their hooves, the dog or cat with unexplained neurological signs (especially if they had recent interaction with a bat), or the acute death of a number of animals. In any of these cases (and in many others) a veterinarian must keep the potential of certain reportable diseases on their differential list, and they contact their federal and provincial authorities to advise of this possibility. But, once a vet has made that contact, what happens? What's the next step? This can sometimes be unclear, as each disease incident has many different variables, and generally, a “risk-based assessment” is performed to assess the level of concern and risk to other humans and animals on a case by case basis. The varied responses and the methods by which veterinary regulatory authorities manage a disease outbreak can be confusing, so in the next 3 podcast episodes we try to provide some clarity around these processes, by working through all levels of diagnosis and response – and highlight the connections between veterinarians and the provincial and federal veterinary authorities.  Dr. Ryan Tenbergen is a swine veterinarian who works with Demeter Services Vétérinaires, and he has a strong interest in research and epidemiology. He is a past-president of the Ontario Association of Swine Veterinarians, and contributes to disease surveillance nationally as a representative for the Maritimes on the Canadian Swine Health Information Network. Dr. Tenbergen shares his experiences interacting with veterinary authorities as part of the diagnostic process.  Links of Interest:  Find a CFIA District Office contact number

Disease classification is a very important aspect for both swine producers and veterinarians. It helps provide a roadmap for how to manage viruses within herds, and PRRSV has been a major problem for the swine industry for many years. In the first episode, Dr. Derald Holtkamp shares with me Dr. Clayton Johnson about the many years he has spent developing his swine herd PRRS classification system. Listen to this short episode to learn more about it! Dr. Derald Holtkamp is a Professor of Swine Production Medicine at Iowa State University and has held the position for over 15 years. Dr. Holtkamp's research focuses on the management of infectious swine diseases, biosecurity, disease risk assessment, and the economics of animal health and disease with an emphasis on porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) and porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV). He is directing the Production Animal Disease Risk Assessment Program (PADRAP) at Iowa State University focusing on the development, management, and promotion of disease risk assessment tools and databases of completed risk assessments held by the American Association of Swine Veterinarians.
