Jared dissects the controversy over promoting the film while plugging her beauty and alcohol brands, poking fun at how the rich and famous balance their different ventures.Next, Salma Hayek stuns at 57 in a yellow bikini during her Ibiza trip, but Jared amusingly critiques how even the most stunning posts come with a side of humility. Episode 258: On the morning of February 20, 1989, stay-at-home mother of two Janice Faye Johnson was found unconscious, gravely injured and barely clinging to life at the foot of a flight of basement stairs in the Shelburne, Nova Scotia home she shared with her family, Clayton Norman Johnson and daughters Darla and Dawn. Even though she was still alive when she was found by a neighbour, who called for an ambulance immediately, Janice died in the hospital just after noon that day. More than three years after her death, police arrested Janice's husband, Clayton, a high school industrial arts teacher, and charged him with first-degree murder. Consistently maintaining his innocence throughout subsequent proceedings, on May 4, 1993, Clayton was found guilty of the first-degree murder of his wife. He was later sentenced to life in prison — his appeals, citing spurious forensic evidence, were rejected. He spent the next five years in prison. “Gilts can be the best reproductive performers on the farm in terms of conception rates and farrowing rates --- if they are not the best, there's an opportunity there for us to go work on” For larger sow systems, a group-based gilt preparation process from weaning at 6 kilograms to breeding at 135 kg is detailed in this conversation in the United States with Dr. Clayton Johnson, veterinarian partner and Director of Health at Carthage Veterinary Services. Health acclimation should begin as early as possible, he tells us. Ideally therefore, bring prospective herd replacement gilts into an isolation barn when they are weaned. Groups would consist of four weeks' worth of gilts, with the animals tagged to identify their birth week. Isolation is followed by time in a developer barn, until gilts weighing at least 120 kg when showing first oestrus are judged ready to move to the gestation area.
“It's important that pathogen exposure occurs early enough in the gilt's life so she recovers from the infection, stops shedding the pathogen and is immunocompetent at the time of farrowing” Divide the young gilt's time before breeding into the separate categories of development and acclimation, says Dr. Clayton Johnson of Carthage Veterinary Services in the U.S.A. Development aims to prepare her physiology for a future in reproduction, acclimation tries to arm her immune system to cope with the pathogens in the sow herd. Target at least 680 grams of gain per day in the gilt developer phase. How acclimation is handled needs to be specific to each pathogen and each herd.

Even with different types of vaccines available for PEDv, it still is a common issue that swine farms struggle with. In this episode, Dr. Clayton Johnson interviews Dr. Brent Sexton about his experiencies with PEDv vaccines and how he has been utilizing a different vaccination method to try and increase the effectiveness of the vaccine in his sow herds. Take 10 minutes out of your day and give this a listen! Dr. Brent Sexton grew up on a farm near Rockwell City, Iowa. He was active in both 4-H and FFA which he credits for his desire to become a veterinarian. Brent attended Iowa State University where he completed both his degree in animal science in 2014 and his degree in veterinary medicine in 2018. After graduation he began working as a veterinarian for Pipestone before transitioning to the Maschhoffs in 2019. Dr. Sexton's primary interests are infectious swine diseases, diagnostics interpretation, and swine production.
Disease classification is a very important aspect for both swine producers and veterinarians. It helps provide a roadmap for how to manage viruses within herds, and PRRSV has been a major problem for the swine industry for many years. In the first episode, Dr. Derald Holtkamp shares with me Dr. Clayton Johnson about the many years he has spent developing his swine herd PRRS classification system. Listen to this short episode to learn more about it! Dr. Derald Holtkamp is a Professor of Swine Production Medicine at Iowa State University and has held the position for over 15 years. Dr. Holtkamp's research focuses on the management of infectious swine diseases, biosecurity, disease risk assessment, and the economics of animal health and disease with an emphasis on porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) and porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV). He is directing the Production Animal Disease Risk Assessment Program (PADRAP) at Iowa State University focusing on the development, management, and promotion of disease risk assessment tools and databases of completed risk assessments held by the American Association of Swine Veterinarians.
Controlling and minimizing PRRSV outbreaks is a major priority for farms everywhere. We currently have PRRSV regional control programs to better regulate how to respond when challenged or exposed to PRRSV. In this episode, Dr. Clayton Johnson talks with Dr. Edison Magalhães who is currently working on a proposal for a new updated program that may help with PRRSV monitoring and the development of action plans to combat it's spread. Dr. Edison Magalhães is a Ph.D. student at Iowa State University. He first received his DVM back in 2015 in Brazil and remained in Brazil working in the swine industry for BRF as an extension veterinarian. In 2019 he started attending ISU where he received his M.S. in Immunology under Dr. Daniel Linhares and has since remained there to continue his education.
