Dr. Carol Reinero, an expert in respiratory diseases in small animals, discusses the rising popularity and associated problems of brachycephalic (shortnosed) dog breeds such as French Bulldogs, English Bulldogs, and Pugs. She explains how their physical traits lead to a variety of health problems, particularly respiratory issues known as brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) and aerodigestive disorders. The discussion delves into how even though specific symptoms associated with brachycelpahlic breeds (including exercise intolerance, loud breathing, coughing after eating, excessive burping, flatulence, snoring and obstructive sleep apnea) are often considered “normal," these have serious long-term health implications and negatively impact a dog's quality of life. In addition, due to their compromised respiratory systems, these dogs are also increasingly susceptible to infections and severe manifestations of diseases like canine influenza. To combat these serious concerns, Dr. Reinero emphasizes the critical role of veterinary professionals in managing the complex health needs of brachycephalic dogs. By adopting Gentle Control techniques, implementing effective obesity management strategies, educating pet owners, and tailoring vaccination protocols to include low-volume preventive vaccines, veterinary professionals can significantly enhance the well-being of these beloved breeds. Additionally, the discussion delves into specifics of creating a positive and Fear Free veterinary experience that fosters better compliance with health recommendations and strengthens the human-animal bond. This episode is brought to you by our friends at Elanco.

Co-hosts Anne Chappelle and David Faulkner speak with William J. Sullivan, PhD, Showalter Professor of Pharmacology & Toxicology and Professor of Microbiology & Immunology with the Indiana University School of Medicine, about toxic parasites lying dormant in your brain and the power and importance of science communication.About the GuestBill Sullivan, PhD, has been studying the intracellular parasite Toxoplasma gondii since he was a graduate student in the laboratory of Dr. David Roos at the University of Pennsylvania in 1994. He completed postdoctoral fellowships with Dr. Chuck Smith at ELANCO (a division of Eli Lilly, Co.) and Dr. Sherry Queener at the Indiana University School of Medicine. He became an Assistant Professor at the Indiana University School of Medicine in 2003. Dr. Sullivan is now the Showalter Professor of Pharmacology & Toxicology and Microbiology & Immunology at the Indiana University School of Medicine.Dr. Sullivan's lab studies cellular signaling and the regulation of gene expression in a fascinating protozoan parasite called Toxoplasma gondii. Toxoplasma causes congenital birth defects as well as opportunistic infection in HIV/AIDS, cancer chemotherapy, and heart transplant patients. There is also emerging evidence that this parasitic infection may be linked to neurological disorders, such as schizophrenia and behavior modification. While the acute stage of toxoplasmosis can be treated, the ability of the parasite to convert into latent tissue cysts prevents eradication of the infection from the patient. Unfortunately, if immunity wanes, the patient can relapse and suffer additional episodes of life-threatening acute infection. Additionally, toxoplasma is a serious threat to some wildlife and livestock.Send SOT thoughts on the episodes, ideas for future topics, and more.

VetFolio - Veterinary Practice Management and Continuing Education Podcasts
In this CE episode of the VetFolio Voice podcast, Dr. Cassi chats with Dr. Kathryn Reif, the Bailey-Goodwin Endowed Chair in Parasitology at Auburn University's College of Veterinary Medicine, about her research on ticks and tick-borne diseases. Ticks are spreading and can make both animals and people seriously sick, which is why considerations such as speed of kill are more important than ever when deciding on tick protection for your patients. This episode is sponsored by Credelio® (lotilaner), an Elanco product.
With FDA's review complete, Elanco's Bovaer is getting ready for the U.S. marketplace. But the methane-reducing feed additive's success will be as much about economic as environmental sustainability, said Katie Cook, Elanco's Vice President of Livestock Sustainability and Farm Animal Marketing, in a Dairy Defined podcast released today. “The biggest thing, and the thing that's most important, is not only are we making sure that we're providing an environmental sustainability practice to our producers, but most importantly we're providing them with additional profitability,” Cook said. “It's a key tool as we think about telling our dairy story and the value that our dairy products bring to consumers. But more importantly, as a producer, it's also giving you an additional revenue stream as we think about the economic viability of our farms' longer term.”
