One of the fundamental areas of investigation pertains to sex disparities in strength, power, and hypertrophy. Historically, it's been well-established that males, on average, exhibit greater absolute strength and muscle mass compared to females. This discrepancy often traces its roots back to inherent physiological distinctions. However, when it comes to responses to strength and hypertrophy training, the narrative becomes more nuanced. Research indicates that, when individuals of both sexes follow matched resistance training protocols, the relative improvements in strength and hypertrophy are quite similar. So, do women need to be trained differently than men? The answer, it appears, is not as much as one might assume. The principles of progressive overload, specificity, and other training fundamentals remain constant. While individualization is key, the idea of drastically distinct training guidelines based on sex lacks compelling empirical support. The guest in this episode, Dr. David Nolan, is a researcher in the area of sex differences in exercise response, and has looked at the influences of menstrual cycle and hormonal contraceptive use in female athletes on their performance. In this episode, we discuss the research to date, and what this means practically for athletes and coaches.

On a special Mormon Media Reviews segment on MBR, Rebecca Bibliotheca returns to co-host with Steven Pynakker! "The Good Shepherds,” a musical written, composed and directed by David Nolan and Chris Metz, shines a light on the finances of the LDS church and other religious organizations and asks the question, is the sizeable wealth of religious organizations like the LDS church really being used to help those who need it, specifically marginalized groups. Do religious organizations follow the adage WWJD when it comes to spending their money? Both directors have a personal connection to the storyline and use song, dance and individual stories from the cast to get the play's message across. Deemed controversial, many people involved in the production have faced backlash for their participation, but most remained committed to the message. #mormonmusical #lds

The Libertarian Party celebrates its 51st birthday next week — that's 51 years pushing a fiscally conservative, socially liberal agenda. And the party's origins trace back to a living room in the Denver suburbs — Westminster! — when a group of people fed up with the Nixon administration imagined a different way. Their message has shaped Colorado in many ways in the decades since, but why was Colorado the perfect place for this political ideology to be born? And is Governor Jared Polis really a secret Libertarian? Today on the show, author and former party leader Ari Armstrong joins host Bree Davies to talk about Libertarianism's impact on local and national politics, why Colorado became the birthplace of this movement, and more. Roe vs Wade has been overturned. What does this mean about individual rights? The End of Roe vs Wade The most divisive issue in our culture has been flipped on its ear thanks to SCOTUS overturning Roe vs Wade. Now individual states can establish their own rules. States have been preparing for this outcome with some states reinforcing the right to choose and other states doing the opposite. Huge demonstrations are happening across America. I thought this would never happen. I was wrong. As a student at UC San Diego, the abortion issue was the first political topic I wrestled with. I saw the logic and righteousness in the idea of being in charge of your own life, particularly the idea of body sovereignty. It has shaped how I see a range of issues today. Your right to manage your life is fundamental. The World's Smallest Political Quiz Are we going backwards? If so, in which dimensions. We discuss the Nolan Chart invented by David Nolan in 1969. This chart abandons the traditional left wing vs right wing spectrum. Instead, it introduces a paradigm of looking at individual freedom in 2 dimensions: your personal life and your economic life. This chart is captured in The World's Smallest Political Quiz. I invite you to try it to see where you line up. You might be surprised. I certainly was! https://www.theadvocates.org/quiz/ What is a Right? There are rights of free speech and freedom of the press. There are guns rights, women's rights, and gay rights. There are rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Some think healthcare is a right. So, what is a right? A “right” is a moral principle defining and sanctioning a man's freedom of action in a social context. There is only one fundamental right: a man's right to his own life. All the other rights, like freedom of speech or property rights, are its consequences or corollaries. This means that many things some declare as rights are not actually rights. For example, a right to healthcare can only be provided by violating the rights of other people to provide the service or fund it. A lot of people think it can be anything they want, but here's a test: If someone else has to give you something, rather than just not harming you, it's not a right. Billy the Kid Review I really enjoyed the Epix series Billy the Kid and recommend you consider it. His story as the son of Irish immigrants leaving New York City to risk a trip westward is similar to what my own Irish ancestors did. People traveled with little resources across treacherous terrain and dangerous circumstances for a better life. They bet on themselves. They believed in themselves. Billy lived from 1859-1881. This is a transformational time in human history. The Industrial Revolution and Capitalism were producing innovative, life-improving technologies. Immigrants from all over the world flocked to America to seek opportunity. America expanded west and built a nation. This series tackles many powerful values like justice, integrity, independence, trust, and honesty. These are all issues I enjoy discussing in my podcast. I give it a big thumbs up but warn you it can move a bit slow at times. IMDB rates this series a 7.0. Rotten Tomatoes gives this an audience score of 82%. https://www.epix.com/series/billy-the-kid #RoeOverturned #Rights #BillytheKid Thank you! But we all need to stretch in order to protect our mobility and independence. "A lot of people don't understand that stretching has to happen on a regular basis. It should be daily," says David Nolan, a physical therapist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Why stretching is importantStretching keeps the muscles flexible, strong, and healthy, and we need that flexibility to maintain a range of motion in the joints. Without it, the muscles shorten and become tight. Then, when you call on the muscles for activity, they are weak and unable to extend all the way. That puts you at risk for joint pain, strains, and muscle damage.Where to startWith a body full of muscles, the idea of daily stretching may seem overwhelming. But Nolan says you don't have to stretch every muscle you have. "The areas critical for mobility are in your lower extremities: your calves, your hamstrings, your hip flexors in the pelvis and quadriceps in the front of the thigh." Stretching your shoulders, neck, and lower back is also beneficial. Aim for a program of daily stretches or at least three or four times per week.Find a physical therapist (your local Y is a good place to start) who can assess your muscle strength and tailor a stretching program to fit your needs. If you have chronic conditions such as Parkinson's disease or arthritis, you'll want to clear a new stretching regimen with your doctor before you start.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/thingsyoushouldknowpodcast)
It was 18 March 1982 at La Palace in Paris when Andy Partridge left the stage for the last time, overwhelmed by the pressures of relentless touring and Valium withdrawal.Until that point, XTC were one of the hardest working live bands on the circuit and in this episode of What Do You Call That Noise? The XTC Podcast, music journalists David Nolan and Mick Middles remember what it was like to see them. They are joined by Brenna Ehrlich, senior news editor at Rolling Stone magazine, and Mark Fisher.
