Natalia defines faithfulness and how she lives it out as a missionary, wife, and mother. Fr. Anthony also gives practical examples of living a faith-filled life for Jesus. They discuss the idea of how to love Jesus more than others and how the vows of ordination/marriage deepen their faith. The Lord calls each of us, in a unique way, to a specific vocation. It is through that vocation that we learn, deepen and grow in faithfulness. Shout-outs: 02:09 Tony Federico, Fr. There’s a fine line to walk between being unsupportive and letting someone make decisions for themselves. When today’s guest, personal trainer and paleo guru Tony Federico, was a teenager, he was a chronic quitter. He didn’t have anyone telling him not to quit when he wasn’t feeling something, and instead of this having an adverse effect on his life, Tony’s confidence in his own decisions grew. Tony has quit nearly everything he’s come across in life - karate, football, high school, and a fair few of his jobs. But this doesn't mean that he’s wasting his life. Far from it, actually. Tony has used his tendency to quit to have some forced introspection and truly examine what he wants out of life. After a death in his late teens, he used this period to figure out and understand that he wants to spend his life focused on health and wellness. For the past 10 years, Tony has been working as a personal trainer and contributor to paleo health publications. And now, he’s working as the Vice President of Marketing for paleo health company, Natural Force. In this episode, Tony and I talk about how taking hold of your own life decisions, even if it means quitting, can lead to some incredible experiences and opportunities. We also look at what happens if you actually stick something through to the end - and see what amazing outcomes are possible. Tony eventually replaced his quitting tendencies with overcommitment. This led to some issues as well, however, and ultimately led him to realize he needed to find a place of balance between quitting and committing. We also examined the differences between the “painful known” and the “unknown possibility” and talked about how these concepts can help you find balance. Are you, or have you been, a chronic quitter? How have you learned to explore the limitless possibility to design your own life? Do you use exercise to help you make decisions? In This Episode: How a lack of introspection can lead you to quit Why it’s important to let a child make some decisions on their own, without parental intervention How you can use tragedy and your tendencies to quit to start to examine the self to help you learn and grow What benefit yoga and other wellness exercises can have on your mental health How your life events can impact your decision to start sticking to things What happens when you commit to something and see it through to the end Why you need to figure out what type of hard you’re working through How to reach a point when you realize you need balance Where you can balance on the threshold between discomfort and pain How you can become a more balanced version of yourself What the “painful known” and the “unknown possibility” are Why you should never burn bridges when you quit How you can make strategic decisions to better your health, relationships, and life Quotes: “Maybe that’s part of it. I didn’t have a lot of people telling me to not quit.” (6:14) “There is an openness for the first time and a willingness to do the self-examination for the very first time.”(9:08) “It’s hard, but that doesn’t mean you need to stop. Discomfort is part of the process. You’re not gonna feel good the entire time.” (12:27) “It’s not just about quitting something or committing to something. It’s about - what am I really trying to achieve in my life. What is the real big picture goal?” (16:32) “How do you know the next thing is going to be better? And the answer is - you don’t. But what you do know is the pain you don’t want.” (27:22) Links Join Quitopia for free & be supported by a strong community of fellow quitters! Tony earned his degree in Exercise Science from the University of Florida and is an American College of Sports Medicine certified Health and Fitness Specialist. He is currently based out of Jacksonville Florida where he works full time as a Personal Trainer and Wellness Consultant, helping busy executives, retirees, athletes, and soccer moms achieve their fitness goals. His personal perspective on health changed when he decided to learn how to run barefoot in the hopes that it would help his chronic knee pain. Within three months, he was pain free. Since then has run numerous 1/2 marathons, Super Spartan and Tough Mudder adventure races, and tackled challenges he never thought possible, such as learning how do a backflip at the age of 30. Tony began to realize that our modern lifestyles and technology might be at the root of other diseases and disorders and to test this theory, he began following the a gluten free and grain free Paleo diet. He eliminated wheat, most types of dairy, processed sugar, and all junk foods from his diet, focusing solely on ethically raised meat, green plants, fruits, nuts and seeds. After an initial 30 day test run, he saw significant improvement in his thyroid symptoms (surgically acquired hypothyroidism), chronic restless legs, ADD, binge eating, and body dysmorphic disorder. Looking for a way to share recipes and inspiration with others, Tony started a personal blog, LiveCaveman.com, and subsequently became a regular contributor to Paleo Magazine (PaleoMagOnline.com) as well as the host of the Paleo Magazine Podcast (PaleoMagOnline.com/radio). He has also hosted panel discussions and been a presenter at PaleoFX and the Ancestral Health Symposium and wrote the book on Paleo grilling ("Paleo Grilling - A Modern Caveman's Guide to Cooking with Fire"). "Food is what you are, and you are what you eat. Food serves multiple purposes. On one hand, it's to nourish your body with physical things that it needs, but you can also use food to soothe emotions, avoid emotions, as entertainment, or when you feel sad. It allows for a certain degree of emotional manipulation." - Tony Federico Food is an important part of our everyday life, but sometimes we allow unhealthy, processed foods to manipulate our bodies' health and emotions. Unfortunately, eating healthy is not always an easy switch to make with big multinational corporations selling and promoting foods everywhere we look. However, we have the ultimate power to make the decision to decide what we eat every day. Take a moment look inside yourself and ask if your relationship with food is a healthy one. It's okay to admit that it's not a healthy relationship and that you're ready for a change in your life. On this week's podcast, host of the Paleo Magazine Radio podcast, Tony Federico, shares with us how he overcame an unhealthy relationship with food and how making a goal to live a more Paleolithic lifestyle has transformed his body and his life. How To Create A Healthy Relationship With Food As humans that operate from the reptilian brain, what do we ultimately need to thrive? We need real food. Take a moment to think about where our ancestors found their source of food. It wasn't from the processed food section from the grocery store, but from real foods like fruits, nits, seeds, vegetables and different meats. If you are what you eat, then your relationship with food can say a lot about whether you are tuned in with your body or not. Tony himself struggled for quite some time to create a healthy relationship with food. At one point, he found himself in a cycle of doing unhealthy amounts of exercise and eating processed foods that he believed to be healthy. In looking back on his lifestyle, Tony discusses on the show how his obsession of eating healthy food was called Orthorexia nervosa before it even existed. To create a healthy relationship with food, Tony shares how we first get to understand how it helps our body. How all of natural foods' nutrients, vitamins, and more give you the energy and strength to live a healthy life each day. Feeding Yourself From A Place of Love & Abundance "Maybe my body is not the enemy. Maybe I can work with this thing if I understand it."- Tony Federico on the Paleo Diet What does your life balance look like right now? Maybe the mix includes: Nutrition Relationships Career Health Friends Fitness But is everything balanced evenly? What areas do you dedicate your time to the most? Which areas are healthy and which are unhealthy? If your health and nutrition are not at the best place that they can be, you may have to change your daily nutrition. For Tony, going Paleo helped him to rethink the benefits of food and a healthy lifestyle. To give your body the love and abundance that it needs to stay healthy, real food can help give you the right mindset and positive energy that you need in your life. If you're eating unhealthy, it can throw you off balance in all six areas of your life. Reach Your Goals With Reverse Engineering One method to help you complete a goal is to do it via "reverse engineering." Reverse engineering goals is when you pick a specific goal and decide what types of systems, people, and environment you can put into place to help you reach that goal. As part of the goal, you need to have a base number, but it's very important that you have zero judgement towards that number. For example, if you want to lose 20 pounds and your base start number is 200 pounds. Don't judge that number because it will only lead to negative thinking. Instead, use it to help you see the results that you want. Next, do your homework to start planning and creating a strategy. Be responsible and have the will and commitment to do it. Even if your plan isn't working, think about what can you do to change it so that it does work? The slightest tweak can help you get to the goal that you want to complete if you have the willpower to complete it.
