Hi, Going paleo is all the rage these days, but not everyone is sure where to start. The paleo diet is a popular dietary trend that emphasizes eating foods that our hunter-gatherer ancestors would have consumed during the Paleolithic era. In this podcast I will cover the basics of paleo and explain how to do it well. What is the paleo diet? The paleo diet typically includes meat, fish, eggs, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds while excluding grains, beans, legumes, dairy, processed foods, and refined sugars. Why do people go paleo? People choose to go paleo for a variety of reasons. For some it can be frustration around their weight or those with chronic issues with their digestion and some just want a healthier more balanced alternative to keto. Here are some common health conditions which have found improvement with going paleo: 1. Weight loss: The paleo diet can lead to weight loss, as it emphasizes whole, unprocessed foods and eliminates processed foods and refined sugars. 2. Better blood sugar control: The paleo diet can help improve blood sugar control, as it eliminates refined sugars and focuses on whole, unprocessed foods that are lower on the glycemic index. 3. Improved gut health: The paleo diet can improve gut health by eliminating processed foods and increasing the intake of vegetables and fruits, which are high in fiber and prebiotics. We’ve all heard the term Paleo, and now the latest buzz word in diet and nutrition is Keto. But what does it really mean, how does it work, and why would you consider following this type of diet and lifestyle? We discuss all this with my guest on this episode, Naomi Norwood. Naomi has been one of our clients at The Strength Code for almost 6 years now and she has shared with us her personal journey discovering the Paleo Lifestyle, how it changed her life, and how she ultimately became an expert and now serves as the President of the Ancestral Health Society (AHS). The AHS is motivated by the belief that evolution has much to teach us about healthful living and effective healing through their annual Symposium and their Journal of Evolution and Health. The AHS Symposium brings together a community of scientists, healthcare professionals, and health enthusiasts who collaborate to understand health challenges from an evolutionary perspective. The Journal is a peer-reviewed open-access journal serving academic researchers and clinical practitioners who seek to cultivate interdisciplinary collaboration to develop and test evolutionary approaches to health. Naomi has a wealth of information to give us and has also included an extensive list of resources, books and websites about Ancestral Health that are included in the Show Notes here. I met Edward recently here in Colorado at an even where Dr. Fuhrman was speaking in Carbondale. When he stood up to share a bit of his journey in the realm of vegan fitness and nutrition, I thought this guy sounds like he's got a great story to share! We were a bit all over the place in terms of the flow of the conversation. Between talks of vegan communes, track and field athletics, and tapping into the full genomic human potential, this talk had some great pearls. Here are some highlights... * What a vegetarian diet looked like in the 1970s * How our Paleolithic ancestors really ate and lived * Foods to focus on to create a well balanced nutrient dense diet for optimal performance * Inspiration for accessing our genetic potential as a human * Workout and exercise tips for staying strong, flexible, and fit Links to learn more - SHOW NOTES: https://alter.health/episode92/ - SUPPORT US ON PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/alterhealth - JOIN THE GROUP COACHING PROGRAM: https://www.alter.health/weekly-group-coaching - GET OUR BOOK: https://amzn.to/2tmiOz3 - APPLY TO WORK WITH US: https://alter.health/membership - CONNECT ON FACEBOOK: https://fb.me/alterhealthinc - CONNECT ON INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/alter.health
I kind of hate to even bring this up… But only Kind Of!It is a story that needs to be told, despite the implications: most of the supplements endlessly recommended and actually shilled by those in the ancestral lifestyle are unnecessary. There, I said it. When good health becomes dependent on people being hooked on artificial supplements, why then it becomes just another marketing gimmick! Just as conventional, AMA big pharma recommended modern medicine, which is largely based on ‘science’ that is 50 years out of date (low fat- high carb nonsense)-Paleo, and increasingly the primary buzzword of KETO are being dominated by the necessity of marketing. That is: selling endless amounts of expensive supplements! If you are seeking lifelong health and fitness, this is not the goal you should be seeking. We need to get back to basics here, to what drew me (and everyone else) to the pristine essense of the ancestral, Paleo Lifestyle in the beginning:EATING REAL FOOD!That, my friends, is the paleo diet in a nutshell- eat real, God made foods, as they come in nature, and ignore the boxed, prepared junk, and fast foods in general. Simple. Easy Peasey. But now- all you hear about is “take this supplement, and this- I sell them both on my website- be sure to order NOW or you are doomed!” While this may be preferrable to taking all of the big Pharma statins, and blood pressure fake medicines, and undergoing every medical test they come up with to separate you from your money- it still is not ideal, and mainly in existence to, again: separate you from your money. But I know, you are concerned about your nutrition, how the depleted soil is making our vegetables less nutritious, and we ‘need’ supplements to keep us healthy…Make your own supplements! That is the simple solution. Get yourself a Vitamix blender, which is the best. This is a one time expense that will ensure your health for a long, long time! Then, start in by making yourself and your family a smoothie to drink each morning. Make a canister full, and put the portions into canning jars that you can refrigerate. Use real veggies and fruits in your smoothies, along with kefir, spices, cod liver oil, apple cider vinegar, raw pastured eggs, yogurt, and everything else I recommend in my eBook Perfectly Paleo Exercise and at my website at paleojay.comIt’s all there, for free! Along with cinnamon, vitamin D liquid, turmeric powder and ginger root and/or ginger powder- this will be everything that you need for perfect and maximum health! EVERYTHING!!It’s really not that hard. (As Michael Scott would say in ‘the Office’). Just take these real, organic (hopefully you are on board with using foods uncontaminated with herbicide poisons), and blend them up to an assimilable state, and drink them down! Keep the rest of your diet clean, meaning good meats, pastured eggs and dairy, and without grains… It’s really that simple. Eat your meat and veggies, occasionally some fruit or sweetener (I am boiling my maple sap into syrup right now), and confine your carbs to sweet or white potatoes, and those that come along with vegetables. That is IT! Along with ample sleep, good, natural (Perfectly Paleo Exercise), clean non-urban air and ample sunshine and time in Nature: why then you will be As Healthy as You Can Be!! Really-
Now, I’m not trying purposely to be vague here. Actually, this is a quite specific recommendation- often, we need to be reminded that we do not need to be struggling wildly, spinning our wheels attempting to make the greatest gains, the best accomplishments of our lives, because; well- time is all we’ve got!Last week I was reminded of this, as I got quite sick, and stayed that way for a solid week! Now, this is a rarity for me. Probably for your too, if you make your health a real priority in your life, trying to always get at least 8 hours of sleep, eat a paleo diet, and exercise intensely, yet briefly, on a regular basis. I fact, right now I can’t recall the last time I got sick! It really is usually less than one time per year, and then only for a day or two…Except this time. I know what it stemmed from, as I was forced to be outside in freezing rain and cold for hours, at night (I rarely stay up late at night), and was coupled with extreme exertion! I remember thinking ‘If I am exposed right now to something bad (I was in a large crowd as well), I know I am driving those toxins right deep into my body.’ And that is exactly what happened! I got so ill that all I could do was lay in my chair, covered with a sleeping bag and with an electric heater aimed at my prone form, as I just lay there- day after day. I tried to sleep in my bed, but aside wanting to spare exposing my wife to my toxic self- there was to be no sleep for me! I coughed and sneezed too much, and constantly needed to be blowing my nose, over and over… What a nightmare. And you know what? As I lay there, did I think about all the things I wanted and needed to do, the workouts I was missing, the podcasts, the music and book writing I wasn’t doing, and all the thousand and one things we all do that make a tapestry of our lives? No. I lay there, struggling for breath and the recovery of my usual extreme wellness, yet thinking in the back of my mind that maybe- just maybe- my life was actually usually too busy. Even though everything I do is pretty much what I want and love to do- at the end of the day, what really, really counts in making us what we are, our true selves? It’s not just our accomplishments, although those are important. But what is far more important are all the times that you are just there- in the moment- experiencing your life, and the lives of your tribe all about you, and savoring and appreciating that, in and of itself! Not the accolades you do or might receive, not the money you may make because of your hard work; I mean, all of that is nice, and even necessary in some ways- but at last, who really cares? If you are ‘running and striving’ so hard in your life that you hardly notice what day it is, or where you are and what you are experiencing- you are missing out on your own life.I won’t say I am glad I got sick, far from it. But, as I sat there in that chair, I realized what it was to live in the moment. Entirely, and painful as it was- I was right there. There was no way to escape it.And that’s when I realized that if only I could live the wonderful, vibrant, full-of-joyous sensations moments of my life, as I walk through the forest with my ski poles in the snow, or hit a perfect harmony with my singing partner, or when I’ve grilled a perfect steak- why, then I would be truly BEING, living in the NOW, and in a wonderful time that would in some way live inside me then forever! That is the me that I want, living forever!

Together with her husband, Ted, and 22-month-old daughter, Madison Grace, they run and operate a yoga studio in Malibu, California, where Lauren provides the freshly baked vegan gluten-free granola, and Ted teaches the best class on this side of Malibu. After culinary school, she joined the ranks and worked her way up as head baker to celebrity chef and Food Network star, Duff Goldman, churning out thousands of cakes a week at his West Hollywood location. Realizing how terrible she felt by consuming so much gluten, dairy, and sugar, Lauren began recipe testing with one goal in mind: to make healthy food taste good. Paleo Leben - Ausbildung zum Paleo-Coach http://www.paleo-leben.de/ Journal of Evolution and Health To Restore Health, “Do we Have to Go Back to the Future?” The Impact of a 4-Day Paleolithic Lifestyle Change on Human Metabolism – a Pilot Study ##Abstract On their way from the Stone Age via the Agricultural Revolution to current high-tech conditions, humans lost their primal foraging behavior. Today, energy expenditure is not necessary anymore for gathering nor hunting, and metabolic diseases are epidemically arising wherever our original Paleolithic lifestyle is turning into a modern sedentary lifestyle. In this pilot study, we followed through the concept that a radical change towards a Paleolithic hunter-gatherer lifestyle could serve as therapy against any metaflammatory disease, even in the short term. Thirteen healthy adult volunteers were transferred to the DELUX National Park (Germany and Luxembourg) for four days and three nights, where Stone Age conditions where mimicked. Thirty-eight biochemical and bioelectrical parameters were measured from participants before and after this relocation. Body weight (-3,9%), body fat (-7,5%), body mass index (-3,8%), visceral fat area (-14,4%) and metaflammation-related parameters (fasting glucose = -18,2%; fasting insulin = -50,1%; HOMA = -57,8%) decreased significantly. C-reactive protein, as the main indicator for low-grade inflammation, increased up to an average of 169,6 %. Our data show that returning to our Paleolithic roots may have positive effects on risk factors commonly associated with metabolic disorders, such as obesity and type 2 diabetes. These findings may lead the way to further research to answer the question whether the already existing metabolic conditions and/or autoimmune and neuroinflammatory diseases could be influenced by a Paleolithic lifestyle Back to the Future. Metabolic Effects of a 4-Day Outdoor Trip Under Simulated Paleolithic Conditions – New Insights from The Eifel Study ##Abstract Background: The observation that the emergence of common Western diseases takes place with much greater prevalence as societies migrate from natural-living cultures to modernized societies, has been well documented. For approximately 84,000 generations humans lived under hunter-gatherer conditions but recently endured dramatic change from our native lifestyle with the occurrence of the agricultural, industrial, and digital revolutions. The massive technological advancement that occurred within a relatively recent timeframe enabled humans to live in manner that is remarkably different than our pre-agricultural past. Consequently, the shift from a natural to a modern lifestyle likely promotes a gene-environment mismatch which causes metabolic dysregulation which causes disease. Methods: Using a within-participant design, we examined whether, compared to baseline, changes in lifestyle towards a more Paleolithic-style pattern, for a four-day and four-night period related to changes in a variety of metabolic parameters. Two groups of 14 volunteers were isolated for a period of four days and four nights in the natural park Südeifel on the borders between Germany and Luxembourg. Participants lived outdoors without tents. The daily hiking performance was 16.4 km (≈ 24963 steps/day) and the daily activity time 5.49 h/day by a mean caloric intake of 1747 kcal/day. Results: After four days of simulated Paleolithic conditions, body weight (-2.9%), body mass index (-2.7%), body fat (-10.4%), visceral fat (-13.6%) and waist-hip-ratio (-2.2%) significantly decreased, while muscle mass significantly increased (+2,3%). Additionally, fasting glucose (-6.5%), basal insulin (-44.4%), homeostasis model assessment-index (-49.3%) and fatty liver index (-41%) significantly dropped. In contrast, C-reactive protein, significantly increased (+67.1%). Conclusion: Our study indicates that a short nature trip, where modern humans adjust their behavioral patterns to simulate a more Paleolithic-like condition, could serve as an effective strategy to help prevent or improve modern metabolic disease. Particularly, the major findings of an expeditious reduction of homeostasis model assessment-index and fatty liver index scores in only four days reveal the potential for meaningful benefits with such an intervention, even when compared to the effects of longer-term, singleintervention studies such as dietary or fitness programs on similar metabolic parameters. I would be just a burst of frustration and stuff. And now, I think of it more of a gradual increase or a frustration. It's a big difference.Thoughts on BreathingThat's actually how I focus on my meditation. I focus on the breathing in and the breathing out. If I stray off, which happens every few seconds, I refocus on the breathing so it is important and I'd listen to that breath so I don't always use ocean sounds as I'm meditating but I do always focus on the breathing.Suggested ResourcesBook: The Primal Blueprint by Mark SissonApp: Brain WaveAdvice for Newbie I would like those people to not worry about being perfect at it. Even if you can just do two minutes a day and just start and increase it, and that's what I did. I started very short on the meditation but it was pretty easy for me to come up to a longer time. I could go longer than eight minutes but I usually find that that is the point where I can continue to focus and I don't want to go and do something else. The other thing that I would recommend is they not only focus on meditation. It's not only that time, It's how they're treating their whole life.

Intro (0:00) News and Views (0:56)Sarah's children had a slight cold, and unfortunately she has laryngitis, and feels fine, but her voice is a bit croaky The topic that was teased on last week's episode is coming very soon, we just have to work with our guest's schedule Sarah received some amazing news on The Healing Kitchen, which she just submitted to her publisher for first edits, and they love the first draft so much that they want to push it to publish two months earlier than originally planned Life is going to be a little crazy for Sarah as they move this book forward faster than expected Sarah is also working on a second book that will be out in 2016, which will be a more science focused book Sarah has lots of ideas for books and would love to release one yearly, but has to come up with a sustainable timeline on writing, editing and releasing In Stacy's working world she is at the end of the fiscal year and things are so hectic; she is also recovering from an overtraining injury and trying to figure out the best solution to healing Recovery time has turned into quality family time for Stacy and family Sarah's training as of late and what she has been working on at the gym Stacy and Sarah like to keep this show timely, and to keep the topics flexible so that they can address relevant news when it becomes available and makes for a great discussion on the show This week's show will be a great basics show to refer friends and family to who are interested in paleo, but will also be great for veterans who are looking to reconnect with some of the foundational beliefs Science with Sarah (23:27)There was a study published a few weeks back in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on the diets of paleolithic man and it has been cited all over the internet as the nail in the coffin that the paleo diet is dead Sarah read through the entire study and found it to be fascinating The study found that there is a region where in paleolithic times, the humans from that region were cooking and grinding oats (find a bit from NPR on the subject here) The results from this study are making many say - great, we should now be eating oats However, Sarah wants to note that there were many other nutrients that were found on the grinding stone that this study focused on, and we can't isolate the oats that were found on the stone and sum up the whole of their diet with the incorporation of the one nutrient The modern paleo diet isn't about a historical reenactment, it is about understanding exactly how food affects our health at a very detailed cellular level Grains cannot compete with the powerhouses of nutrition that are quality meats, seafood, vegetables, and fruit, nuts and seeds, and eggs Modern strains of grains are compounds that are inflammatory, and they are also high in sugar - so these grains now do not contribute to our health as they possibly did at one time in agricultural history This study is a very good reminder that the content of a very nutrient diet, paired with low stress, ample sleep, low to moderately-intense activity is a great base to healthy living, and that having a little bit of grain in the diet is likely not a problem for some There is a big difference between having grain occasionally that is traditionally prepared verses having it as a normal feature of a diet The question here isn't when did man start eating grains, when did grains become a substantial part of the diet, the question is what are the best foods that we can eat now to be healthy, the best foods that we have access to today, what are the best lifestyle properties to be healthy It is also important to look at how our bodies tolerate going off plan, when and why The paleo diet is based on contemporary science and what the best foods are to support our health - and while it gets its original structure from the average of paleolithic man, it gets its proof in contemporary science and in the growing number of randomized controlled clinical trials that are pitting paleo against other modern diets and showing that paleo wins Stacy shared her feelings on the misconception that today's paleo diet is meant to be a reenactment of paleolithic times Stacy further notes that since we don't know what the quality or quantity of those paleolithic oats were that it is hard to make a summarizing statement about the death of a grain-free approach to living Some people are able to successfully integrate in gluten-free oats, and it is important to recognize that this is based on a personal observation on how an individual feels when consuming any given item When you are defining what is or isn't paleo you need to look at what is the best for your body today, and from there play with adding foods or removing foods to see how it makes you feel A lot of these critiques of the paleo diet misrepresent what the foundational beliefs of the paleo diet actually are Sarah agrees that consistently looking at and evaluating scientific evidence is an important part of the greatest strengths of this diet, the diet adapts as we learn more Side note, in response to last week's show, shout out to those who sent "stool pictures" on Instagram Questions & Answers (49:39)Amy - will not eat organ meats or selfish, how can I find out what supplements are right for me to replace the nutrients in those foods?Stacy definitely recommends looking for a practitioner that matches the needs of what Amy is looking for Both Stacy and Sarah take supplements that suit their own needs, but Stacy doesn't take the same ones consistently, it depends on her health and what she has going on When Stacy is looking for medical support she looks for someone who practices integrative medicine, but she feels it is a personal thing when deciding what is important to you in a medical practitioner The directories that Sarah recommends utilizing are Paleo Physicians Network, Primal Docs and Institute of Functional Medicine There is also a functional medicine specialist on the Paleo Mom Consulting Team Doing a micronutrient sufficiency analysis with your doctor may be a helpful tool You could also track your micronutrient intake with the app Cronometer You might be able to consume real food to fill the gaps Sarah doesn't like to typically recommend supplements, but there is one brand of organ meat supplements by Dr. Ron's Ultra Pure that is a high quality option Josh - looking for guidance with fiancé's weight-loss goals, while tending to a thyroid issue (1:02:37)The Paleo Approach could help as it has a lot of science to help you navigate healing, but doesn't necessarily talk to weight-loss Going low-carb can cause some issues that you should be cautious of when toying with carb intake Increase carb intake gradually and incorporate really slow burning carbohydrates with lots of fiber and eaten as part of whole meals Sarah thinks this may be a hormone regulation issue, and recommends getting tons of sleep, incorporating activity without over doing it And if these tactics don't help with losing weight, Sarah suggests having a full thyroid panel done Thank you everyone for tuning in, we will be back with an epic topic and Sarah is going to go work on recovering her voice Sarah's plug for a live show, and Stacy's thoughts on her recent Periscope use for Strong Woman Radio Feel free to keep tagging us on Instagram, while neither Stacy or Sarah have Periscope, they love Instagram Outro (1:15:48)

Was heißt LDL eigentlich?" Du hast also alle Informationen zu Paleo hineingepackt? OK, Darryl, Danke! Danke für das Interview und viel Spaß noch in Berlin Danke vielmals, Ciao English transscript of the interview Darryl, thanks that you have the time here at the Paleo Convention in Berlin to talk to us from Evolution Radio Show. Why don't you tell us a little bit about your work and about your presentation you had here today? Yes, so first: it's great to be here in Berlin at the Paleo Conference. I gave a presentation today about the power of primal play, the importance of physical activity even when you're following a Paleo lifestyle and you believe your nutrition is dialled down and providing you significant health benefits. It is also important to think about the other areas of the Paleo Lifestyle that are is just as important as the food. Later on you had a little Workshop. You showed the people how to play. If you are watching this on YouTube you will see a video of that. So what are the main things that make your kind of training different lets say. I mean people saw the video but people who're listening how would you describe? I would say it's highly interactive. People actually get to touch each other to getting close proximity to each other. To be aware of their strengths and weaknesses amongst the group and most importantly they are enjoying the moments. So I would say at a minimum 50 to 60% of the session they will be smiling, laughing and joking, even though they are working or playing very hard. Most fitness that I see tends to be just about, you know, hard work, punishing. "I will finish this very soon, I can't wait for it to finish". I want to be able to let people see that they don't want to stop. That's the experience they should have when they are moving that this is so much fun. Actually I want this to continue for as long as possible. You said it in your presentation, it is not actually just about the kind of the workouts or techniques but also about motivation. So that's like a big factor for people to stay healthy? Yes, for sure. I mean The people that make the most money in the fitness industry tend to be the big gyms, chain of gyms. And one of the reasons being, they only have to sign you up as a member they don't need you to attend. And human nature means: you sign up you most likely won't attend. So maybe 10 or 15% of gym memberships have regular attendance. Most people sign up for a year, they go maybe one month in January, then a couple of weeks in February and then they forget about it for the rest of the year. Maybe one week in the summer because they want to look good without their t-shirt. But it's very difficult to maintain a fitness practice for a very long time. You are looking for something even better than what you do now or you decided to better to watch somebody else playing sports than to take part in it yourself. Yeah. You also recently published a new book, "Paleo from A to Z". Do you want to quickly do it like a cliff notes (version) because we'll do subtitles here so people can actually, if they don't read the English original; just to get a glimpse of what you are thinking, what your big points are that you want to…. Okay so the book "Paleo from A to Z" addresses all of the questions for someone who is beginning a Paleo journey or for someone who is doing this for a while and wants to know a little bit more about the Paleo lifestyle. They read a Blog and they see some information about cholesterol and they are like "I don't understand any of those terms what does LDL mean, what does it mean?". This book will give you a definition of all of those terms but also will let you know what it relates to. So if you read about Insulin then you will see some information about Glucagon or if you read about Glucagon you see some information about the other hormones in relation to hunger you know like Leptin, like Ghrelin and so on. So, all of that interconnected information is available within the book. And I try to be as comprehensive as possible so that anyone in the Paleo world should find something that they didn't know or find it in a new way that is easier to explain to their friends or family who are asking a question about Paleo instead of saying to them "Oh, go to this website and this one and then you need to read this research paper and that one". You can just go: "Here you go it's just in one line." It tells you what that information definition is. So you really try to compress all the information there. Yes. It's more like a dictionary you should have at home if you need to lookup something, some... Exactly, so it's something like an Encyclopedia and it has over 500 topics, individual topics, so it's quite comprehensive and it is very challenging to, as you can imagine, to write that and to think about all the relationships between those topics but it means (1) I don't have to write a FAQ now on my website; it's that big and (2) if I have client coming to me for the first time he wants to know more I can say: Actually consider my book because it will give you a good foundation on the Paleo lifestyle. So in researching the book because you said everybody can find something new you must have found some new things as well for yourself. Yes. Would you mind sharing maybe just one or two of the things you thought: "Oh that's interesting. Nobody ever told me about that". Yes, so one, one interesting fact it was about so I was looking researching on the immune system of course, the importance of the immune system. So most of us are aware of what we can do to bolster the immune system looking after our gut health. Making sure we're getting enough sleep, making sure we're managing our stress all those things we kind of aware have a direct impact on the immune system. But some interesting research I saw was about laughter. So laughter for example, engaging laughter every single day actually improves the your immune system response. So you become healthier and your immune system becomes healthier through laughter. So that's one of the interesting facts. There is a lot of (almost) trivia as well within the book where you go: "Oh, I had no idea". And it is amazing I now enjoy comedies even more, I actually try to get more laughter in my life. And as you saw within my sessions a lot of people are laughing whilst they do Primal Play because I think it is important cause everything is so serious. You know, your food is serious, your workout is serious, your … you know... everything is serious. So...Let's have some fun as well at the same time. Maybe because you mentioned clients do you see a pattern like is there one really big mistake that people always make or some suggestion you always have to make: “actually, do this first”? I would always plan and make a decision as to what you can maintain for the long term. So I have clients who come to me say: "Yes, I'm going to give up this, this, this I'm going to live 100% Paleo I'm not going to change anything at all. It's going to be perfect." And of course you know it's not going to be sustainable. So the first place tends to be: Think about what you can do to maintain the most health benefits you can that will give you the most benefits to achieve as many of the goals as you want in the shortest possible time that you can do for rest of your life. That's what you want to focus on. Okay, Darryl. Thank you. Thank you, thank for having us and enjoy Berlin. Thank you very much. Bye!
