 The Pacific Northwest chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture hosts an annual regional tree climbing competition in a Portland park, where arborists can compete for the chance to showcase their skills at a national and international level. This year, 35 climbers will compete in five events over two days.   Terry Flanagan is the chair of the Tree Climbing Competition Committee at the PNWISA. He competed in his first tree climbing competition in 1981 and has been working in arboriculture for 49 years. Kyle Thomas is the regional coordinator for the tree climbing competition, as well as the operations supervisor for the Urban Forestry Division of Portland Parks and Recreation. They both join us to share more ahead of the upcoming competition in Portland, which will take place June 6 and 7 at Farragut Park.

On Saturday, June 21, The New York State Arborists held the 2025 State tree climbing competition. Professional arborists from all over the state came to Washington Park in Albany to demonstrate their skills and share techniques and send a winner to the national competition. Moses Nagel was there to root on the competitors. The winner of the Men's Masters Challenge was Jeremy Passinault. The winner on the women's side and the Spirit of TCC award winner was Jocelyn Benitez Chavez who we hear in the story.

Seems that in past years of recent, the idea and skill set of throw line manipulation has become less of a focus for upcoming Tree Climber‘s. Even some tree climbers that have decades of experience have kind of abandoned throw line manipulation techniques. SRS/SRT tree climbing typically doesn't absolutely require the singling out of a specific or singular branch union or crotch. However, recently, while I was watching a colleague of mine, try to set his line, I realized that we might be working a little too hard, trying to constantly reset our line win with the mindset of using throw line manipulation. We might be able to just get a decent union with the first throw.
