In this episode, Apolonia is joined by Andrew Boyd, a former cybersecurity consultant who ditched his desk job, strapped on a helmet and a harness, and found a more fulfilling career in the trees. What can safety professionals learn from a man who prunes trees, chops down trees, removes deadwood and trees, and grinds tree stumps? A lot, apparently! Listen to this episode to find out! Today's topics include: * Andrew started in software engineering but found the desk job isolating, leading him to explore tree climbing as a way to combine problem-solving and physical activity. *Andrew's transition from a desk job to tree work, and how his analytical mindset has helped him in this new field. * How many tree workers lack proper training and safety practices, leading to injuries and bad habits. How Andrew started his own business to prioritize safety and best practices, despite potential slower work rates. * Stories of unethical company cultures and near-incidents, highlighting the importance of setting one's own rules and regulations. * Andrew recounts a dangerous tree climbing experience with a colleague who made multiple mistakes, including not tying the rope properly and not paying attention. * The importance of building confidence and comfort level in a safe manner, while also respecting individual boundaries and not pushing people to do something they're uncomfortable with, even if it's not a safety issue. * Safety protocols and leadership in a tree service industry, including how layered safety measures, such as wearing chaps, are important for preventing accidents. * How leaders set the tone for their organization's culture by their actions and behaviors. * If leadership doesn't prioritize safety standards, it may be a sign that the company doesn't truly care about its workers. * The importance of standing up for safety and leading by example, even if it means pausing a project or speaking up when someone is not following safety protocols. Seems that in past years of recent, the idea and skill set of throw line manipulation has become less of a focus for upcoming Tree Climber‘s. Even some tree climbers that have decades of experience have kind of abandoned throw line manipulation techniques. SRS/SRT tree climbing typically doesn't absolutely require the singling out of a specific or singular branch union or crotch. However, recently, while I was watching a colleague of mine, try to set his line, I realized that we might be working a little too hard, trying to constantly reset our line win with the mindset of using throw line manipulation. We might be able to just get a decent union with the first throw. This episode talks about some of the reasons why I feel this way  And some tips that might help you with your throw line manipulation, ideas and skills. #treeclimber #treework #treeservice #Treeremoval #Willowtree #powertracpt425 #centerarticulatingloader #treeserviceequipment #arboristequipment #compactloaders #affordableequipment #treecare #treecleanup #arborist #aboricultureCamera Gear (Affiliate linksDango Design Gripper Mount- https://amzn.to/3ZKXGjYGopro Hero 9 Black - https://amzn.to/3PN3moWGopro Hero 12 Black - https://amzn.to/3tkNYbQJobi Tripod - https://amzn.to/3Q3EevpPPE/Safety equipment: (Affiliate links)Phanner Protos - https://amzn.to/46gyKDvSHOWA Atlas 300 Natural Latex Palm Coated General Purpose Work Glove, Blue, Large (Pack of 12 Pair) - https://amzn.to/3rDAWWmArbpro Cervino Wood Steel Cap Chainsaw Boots - https://amzn.to/3F5rPkwCompact loader Equipment I use (Affiliate Links)DEESTONE Two 23x10.50-12 6ply Rated 23x10.50x12 Tractor Lug Ag Tire 23x1050-12 2 Tires Pair - https://amzn.to/3RKw0K02 NEW HORSESHOE 23x10.50-12 8Ply LRD Ditch Tiller Trencher AG Farm Garden Tractor Lawn Riding Super Duty Lug Tires Tubeless 23x10.5-12 ATV1 T148 - https://amzn.to/3Q487fdIf you are running, or looking a staring to run heavier equipment, here are a few tools that I have found super helpful to have around. Marketing is big business because it affects people. That's the reality of it. I am myself, and getting more and more into marketing for the arborist industry and appreciate how powerful that can be. Still, marketing also can create situations where we do things, think about things, and decide, What is best for our companies in our efforts while really not being as beneficial as we might've thought. While I do think that innovation and marketing has a important role in helping people, I do think that it also influences people to do things that they don't really need to do at times. So, in this episode, we're gonna talk about what Ryan Ferro, Levi Woodall, and myself discussed one afternoon and see exactly how this comes about. We're also going to talk a few minutes about reanalyzing in evaluating what we're doing. This is just the first part of a much deeper and much more complex conversation that elevated office podcast will be having with these very cool people that I had the opportunity to speak with. Dame Sheila Hancock tells us about her memories of the Queen. Just short of 90, she has lived her life in parallel. Earlier this year she said: "throughout my life, I have been grateful for the Queen's reassuring presence." Julia Gillard, former Australian Prime Minister – and the only woman to have held that role – speaks to Emma about the death of Queen Elizabeth II, and her status as a global female leader. What will it mean for Australia, where King Charles automatically became Head of State last week? The current Labor government there led by Anthony Albanese has previously indicated it wants to hold a referendum on whether to become a republic, though Prime Minister Albanese said on Sunday that “now is not a time to talk about our system of government”. Josephine Hedger has just become the female World Champion Tree Climber – for the fifth time. She joins Emma to chat why she loves braving immense heights at speed – and how it feeds into what she does for a living. Today marks a significant day for women in Hungary. The government has tightened abortion laws in the country, meaning women who want to get an abortion will have to listen to vital signs - such as the foetal heartbeat - before being allowed to proceed. The Prime Minister Viktor Orban has long sought to boost Hungary's flagging birth rate and his right-wing government prides itself in standing for traditional family values. Nick Thorpe, the BBC's East and Central Europe Correspondent explains how the law has changed.

Joshua Tree National Park is going to ban bolts? Hold up now. The conversation around land management and climbing management plans (CMP) can get a little tense when climbers feel like our access to the rock is under threat. But what is really going on with J-Tree NP's proposed management plan? It's not as simple as the banning bolts rumor would have it. AAC Policy Manager, Taylor Luneau, and former Joshua Tree Superintendent, Mark Butler, sit down with us to talk about the need for the CMP, the tricky land management paradox of bolts in designated Wilderness areas, and how you can get involved to protect Joshua Tree and promote responsible climbing.
