Frank Vana Jr. is one of the most dominant amateur golfers in Massachusetts history. For starters, Vana qualified for the Round of 32 in 24 straight Massachusetts Amateur championships. Over the course of 9 years, Vana reached the MassAm final match 6 times. On top of that, he has won the Mass Mid-Am 10 times. Vana has also won the Richard D. Haskell Mass Golf Player of the year nine times, including seven straight awards from 2001-2007. In 2004 Vana qualified for the PGA Tour's Dutche Bank Open held at TPC Boston. Finally, Vana was named MGA male player of the decade in for the 1990s and the 2000s. Before turning to golf, Vana was an exceptional hockey and football player, and he earned a spot in Assumption College's Hall of Fame. This laundry list of accomplishments also earned Vana a spot in the Mass Golf Hall of Fame, but he's not done yet. He has won numerous senior events and four straight senior player of the year titles. Now that you know what he's accomplished, I hope you enjoy my discussion with Frank Vana Jr. about how he started playing golf, his work/life/family/golf balance, competing against the youngsters, and more. It was chaos and carnage at Olympia Fields for round 1 of the BMW Championship. On this episode we’re talking about the tough conditions and course setup on Thursday. Was last week’s tournament at TPC Boston maybe just a little too easy? Hideki Matsuyama is your solo leader after 18 holes. He has the ball-striking skills, but can that translate into staying power (9:28)? Tiger Woods struggled at the end of his round by going bogey-bogey-bogey over his final three holes. What is there to make of Tiger’s Thursday and can he make it over to East Lake (16:50)? We wrap with our top players to watch on Friday, conditions like this allow the cream to rise to the top, who do we have confidence in heading into the second round (21:15)? ————————— Check us out on YouTube for video podcasts and exclusive content, visit https://www.youtube.com/FirstCutPodcast 'First Cut' is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, Castbox and wherever else you listen to podcasts. The AIG Women's British Open is front and centre for the show this week as we discuss the remarkable victory at Royal Troon by Sophia Popov. Dustin Johnson also gets our attention for his -30 performance at TPC Boston and we try to figure out if it was boring or tremendous. While Dustin's play looked like a video game, we brought in actual video game people for this week's feature interview. Joining us for unprecedented insight into the new PGA TOUR 2K21 game that has everyone's attention is John McCarthy of HB Studios, the Canadian developer based in Nova Scotia. As the Senior Audio Engineer, John shares some cool details from behind the scenes. Along for the show is CBS Sports broadcaster Luke Elvy. The Aussie, who is a veteran of twelve Masters tournaments and dozens of majors, lends his voice to the game as a commentator and shares what he and booth partner Rich Beem added to the game. We play a "who said it" quote game, and in the mail bag take on questions about the life span of golf shoes, if Dustin Johnson cares more about wins or money, when we think the no-fan policy will end in pro golf, and who do we think among the the current crop of women and men pros would still excel with golf equipment from 100 years ago. “This is Dustin Johnson's FedEx Cup to lose," said Todd Lewis of Golf Channel and added “we're getting ready to see another 3 wins in 5 events type run by Dustin Johnson" as the playoffs head to TPC Boston for the 2nd leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs at the Dell Technologies Championship.
On the show this week, we catch up on two weeks of tournaments and news after a scheduling nightmare last week. And we preview the events of the coming week. We look forward to the first Ryder Cup points qualification event on The European Tour, The M2M Russian Open and the second event of The FedEx Cup, The Deutsche Bank Championship from TPC Boston.
This week we look back on The D+D REAL Czech Masters, comfortably won by Jamie Donaldson to lock in his place on The Ryder Cup Team. The FedEx Cup kicked off with a classy ball striking display from Hunter Mahan en route to winning The Barclays Championship. We then have some Wild Card pick fun by stepping into the shoes of Paul McGinley and his Vice Captains to see what three players we'd pick for the European Team's defence of The Ryder Cup in Gleneagles in a few week's time. We wrap up with a quick look ahead to last chance saloon for European Team automatic qualification in The OPEN D'ITALIA and the second event of The FedEx Cup, the Deutsche Bank Championship from TPC Boston.
