We are back. Thank you all for bearing with us while we get our ducks in a row for another year of the Country Life Podcast. If it's even possible, it's going to be better than last year, that we can guarantee. Our first guest for 2025 is the legendary Marina Gibson, angler extraordinaire, who was more than happy to indulge me in lots of fishing related conversation. She was at Gleneagles, where she had just been sending out the first cast of the salmon season at the hotel, with accompanying bagpipes and whisky pouring to bless the river. Gleneagles has plenty of fishing and fieldsports related activities, which you can look at here. It's also, and this goes without saying, an immensely wonderful hotel. Marina has been fishing pretty much since she could walk and spent 30 minutes making me extremely envious about her career. She's travelled the world, fishing in rivers, lakes and oceans for everything and anything. We talked about her favourite fishing spots, her favourite fish to catch, and some of the absolute monsters of the deep she's landed. We also got a bit more serious, talking about the desperate state of some of the UK's waterways, and what, if anything, can be done to save them. Salmon in particular have been suffering in recent years, and it's going to take a lot of work to get stock levels rising again. But fishing isn't all about catching fish. It's about taking time away from the world, from emails and Instagram, and working on your own mental health. The benefits are scientifically proven. Did you know that fishing can even be prescribed on the NHS? It was a fantastic conversation to start 2025, and sets a very high bar for the rest of the year. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I did recording.Episode creditsHost: James FisherGuest: Marina GibsonEditor and Producer: Toby KeelMusic: JuliusH via Pixabay Hosted on Acast. In the 3rd episode of The Caddy Series, it was a pleasure to be joined by LPGA Tour, Solheim & Ryder Cup pro caddy Jack Clarke as he phones from home in  Florida after a busy 2024 season on the bag with the legendary Anna Nordqvist in a season which saw Jack on the bag for the Majors as well as being at Solheim Cup in Virginia (Anna's 9th) in an event that Jack and now wife Swedish star Madelene Sagström famously had their mini 'honeymoon' and actually got paired together in the same session as Anna/Madelene teamed up together! Jack kindly offers his advice on the expertise of being a Professional caddy! Jack was a fine player in his own right winning Amateur events and turned Professional at 18 years old where he would achieve a Challenge Tour Tour card in 2013/14 before a sad run of injuries hindered his player career and had to give it up at 27 years old! We learn about Jack's experiences as a player! In late 2017 Jack got a call from Gemma Dryburgh to perhaps caddy for Gemma on the LET in which he accepted and would go on to caddy for European Solheim Cup star Caroline Hedwall which included be on her bag at 2019 Solheim Cup at Gleneagles where Suzann Pettersen famously sunk the winning putt to beat the US.  Jack has caddied in 3 Solheim Cups & 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome only losing the once which was this year's Solheim Cup at Robert Trent Jones. He would be on the bag at 2021 Solheim in Toledo for partner Madelene Sagström, be on the bag for the superstar Ludvig Aberg in Rome where Ludvig & Hovland famously defeated Koepka & Scheffler 9&7 and was on the bag with Anna Nordqvist this year. 2023 was a great year for Jack with getting the bag of the promising talent Ludvig Aberg and was able to share alongside 2023 Ryder Cup win also 2 individual wins together at Crans Montana for Omega European Masters and a stunning victory by Ludvig at RSM Classic on PGA Tour. We find out just what makes Ludvig Aberg so good!  I had a great chat with Jack about all things Golf and he comes across as a really likeable guy while also being a well respected figure as a good caddy! I hope you enjoyed it!   Reminder guys that the podcast is nominated in 2025 Sports Podcast Awards for Best Golf Podcast and I need the help of all you lovely people to help me try and cause a shock! Would love your votes as we try to get bigger!  Please be sure to leave a 5 star review as it helps massively with the growth and be sure to like, subscribe and download on Apple Podcasts & Spotify! A really interesting conversation this week with Anna McLean (Crieff GC), David Gemmell (Brora GC) and David MacFarlane of Caddie Marketing.  Crieff is located near Gleneagles and Brora near Royal Dornoch.  The chat explores the benefits, downsides and opportunities of being located near a big Golfing venue which attracts a lot of tourist play.  Over recent times, we've seen many courses across the UK benefit greatly from being near a Muirfield, St Andrews, Royal St Georges, Troon/Turnberry etc, but is it all it cracks up to be?   We explore how it can grow green fee revenue and improve capital project expenditure, but on the flip side - what knock on effect does that have to the culture and member experience. David MacFarlane also talks about how clubs can positively use the opportunity to their benefit while also explaining what clubs should be doing in terms of positive promotion of their venue. On paper, it might look like nothing special—another European win on home soil in the Ryder Cup. But drill down, and you'll see something revelatory in Gleneagles. This was the Ryder Cup that took decades of American strategic weakness and decades of European guile and blew them out to epic proportions. It's no coincidence that the end of this Ryder Cup saw Phil Mickelson publicly challenge Tom Watson; this was the week that forced the U.S. to face all its own shortcomings, and that process wasn't pretty. Dive deep with us in this examination of everything Paul McGinley did right, and how the web he wove ensnared the Americans ... but perhaps woke them up, too. Thanks to Ivan Ross for producing the introduction.

It's the first day of June, so naturally we're thinking easy sipping – whether we're heading out to bars or keeping things simple but stylish at the requisite picnics, barbecues and festivals. With that in mind, our first product review is the super tangy pre-mixed, non-alcoholic Sakura Paloma from Everleaf, followed by one of the most successful bottled cocktails in the past few years, the award-winning Mirror Margarita by Deano Moncrieffe from Hacha bars. For the perfect summer serves, we suggest heading over to Soda + Friends in London City Island, where deftly balanced highballs are the stars of the glass. And for mixing things up at home, we've picked out 'Easy Tiki' by Chloe Frechette – it's got all the tips you need for making the fabulous al fresco drinks. Then it's over to Gleneagles in Perthshire, Scotland to hear from Michele Mariotti on what's in store for summer, how to make the perfect highballs and why a pre-batched Negroni should be in everyone's fridge. What we're mixing:Sgroppino2 scoops lemon sorbet25 vodka75ml proseccoLemon to garnishMethod:Add all ingredients to blender and whizz through for 10 seconds. ABOUT ADAM HANDLINGMichelin-starred Chef Adam Handling started out at Gleneagles 16 years ago where he was the first ever apprentice chef, before he went on to become Fairmont's youngest ever Head Chef. Adam has a number of impressive awards under his belt, including Scottish Chef of the Year, British Culinary Federation's Chef of the Year, Chef of the Year in the Food & Travel Awards. Adam was (and still is) the youngest person to be one of the Caterer's ‘30 under 30 to watch' in the 2013 Acorn Awards. Voted for by both the public and a selection of esteemed industry judges, Adam was named Restaurateur of the Year in the British GQ Food and Drink Awards 2020, before earning his first Michelin star at his flagship restaurant, Frog by Adam Handling, in 2022.Passionate about the best quality British ingredients and sustainability, Adam's beautifully presented dishes start with careful sourcing of top quality, seasonal ingredients, prepared in a number of different, creative ways to bring their true flavour to life.In 2016, Adam was keen to shake up the restaurant scene and he did just that with The Frog E1. Adam's first restaurant, located in the Old Truman Brewery, was one of the first of its kind in London that offered high quality small plates and tasting menus in a cool and casual environment. The focus was on the 4 pillars that Adam deems make a successful restaurant – food, drink, art and music. In September 2017, Adam opened his flagship restaurant and bar, Frog by Adam Handling and Eve Bar in Covent Garden. The restaurant has been heralded as a “smash hit” by the London Evening Standard and one of the “best restaurants in London right now” by Condé Nast Traveller. Frog by Adam Handling has won ‘Best Newcomer Restaurant' in the 2018 Food & Travel Reader Awards, was voted ‘Best Overall Wine List' at the 2019 Wine List Confidential awards and ‘Cocktail List of the Year' at the National Restaurant Awards 2019. Frog by Adam Handling was awarded its first Michelin Star in February 2022. Eve Bar was awarded ‘Cocktail List of the Year' at the 2019 National Restaurant Awards. In May 2021 Adam opened his first ever venue outside of London and his first-ever pub - The Loch & The Tyne, a restaurant, pub, and rooms in the countryside of Old Windsor. Adam intends to make this one of the most sustainable pubs in the UK, complete with luxury bedrooms for overnight guests. Everything about The Loch & The Tyne is rooted in ‘Sustainable British luxury', with exceptional attention to detail in every corner and truly personal touches throughout. The venue is the perfect countryside location for weddings, private events, and country getaways. In another first for Adam, he has named two of his chefs as Co-Chef Proprietors. Steven Kerr, his Group Executive Chef, and Jonny McNeil, Head Chef at Adam Handling Chelsea, have taken up the reins as an opportunity to showcase the skills they have learnt during their time with Adam. In fact, the name of the pub is representative of where Adam first met both Steven and Jonny - 2008 in Newcastle and 2010 in St Andrews. The Loch & The Tyne was included in The Sunday Times ‘Best Places to Stay' list 2021, awarded Highest New Entry (no. 27) in the Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropub Awards 2022, and has recently been awarded 5-stars from the AA.The latest opening for the Adam Handling Restaurant Group is Ugly Butterfly, which is chef Adam's most sustainable brand of restaurants, which launched at the luxurious Carbis Bay Estate on August 2nd 2021, offering British food, inspired by Cornwall. As the G7 summit gets underway in Cornwall, Jack Blanchard speaks to Tony Blair and a host of former senior government officials about what it's like to attend these surreal events — and whether they're really still relevant in the modern age.Blair reminisces about his first big summit — a Bill Clinton-hosted G8 in Colorado in 1997 — and the most memorable, the G8 in Gleneagles in 2005. Former diplomat Peter Ricketts explains the months of unseen work ahead of each summit, and how informal meetings in the margins can often be more important than the main event. Former Downing Street aides Kate Fall and Paul Harrison lift the lid on David Cameron and Theresa May's differing approaches to diplomacy, while POLITICO's own David Herszenhorn explains what it's like to attend a G7 summit as a lowly political hack.
