The R&A is one of golf's governing bodies, guardian of the rulebook, and the organiser of the world's oldest Major, The Open Championship. As CEO for the past 18 months, Mark Darbon has been busy reframing the organisation's vision to grow the game around the world, and diving into the disrupted, sometimes fractured, world of professional golf.In this extended conversation, David Cushnan chats to Darbon about preparations for this year's Open Championship and AIG Women's Open; the relationship between professional golf and the amateur, participation side of the sport; and the changing face of the professional game, amid a swirl of speculation about LIV Golf's future and with changes coming at the PGA Tour under Brian Rolapp's new leadership.Darbon also reflects on disruption in another sport, rugby union, following his stint as CEO of Northampton Saints; explains what the R&A looks for in brand and agency partners; and shares the leadership advice he received from former London 2012 CEO Paul Deighton.------- The first speakers have been announced for Leaders Week London, taking place on Wednesday 7th and Thursday 8th October - for more information and to secure your place, visit leadersinsport.com/leadersweek
Joining me on this episode it was a pleasure to be joined by 2020 AIG Women's Open champion Sophia Popov who bares all in this incredible raw and honest story about the highest highs of winning in a remarkable fairytale story at Royal Troon to finding out finally after 3 years she was diagnosed with Lyme Disease. Sophia was born in Boston, Massachusetts but moved to the Karlsruhe district in Germany at the age of 4 where she would compete in numerous competitions as a German player although has now stayed in Arizona for a number of years. Sophia would have success in her earlier years representing Team Europe at 2009 Junior Solheim Cup which included Leona Maguire & Klara Spilkova, she also won the 2010 International European Ladies Amateur Championship. Sophia would go to University of South California representing USC Trojans and would play a part of 2x Espirito Santo Trophy's & 3x European Ladies' Amateur Team Championships for Germany and won 2x Vagliano Trophy's for Team Europe as well as winning numerous collegiate titles. In 2014 Sophia would turn pro at her home event on LET at German Masters and would win both a LET card & LPGA card for 2015 before disaster struck the early signs of fatigue, multiple pains and lack of appetite left Sophia feeling pretty frail and it would take 3 years to have a diagnosis of deadly Lyme Disease and now raises much needed awareness on Lyme Disease as an advocate. In 2020 while on Symetra Tour just before the height of Covid 19 Pandemic it would come at a great time for Popov as it meant being still able to practice fully in her state of Arizona where Cactus Tour mini tour events were still taking place for player which included some top LPGA pros from Arizona area including 3x major champion Anna Nordqvist & Carlota Ciganda playing a couple. This gave Sophia a platform to stay competitive and it would pay off winning 3x Cactus Tour events before Tour Golf made a comeback and would finish well at Marathon Classic which would get Sophia into 2020 AIG Women's Open at Royal Troon, the rest as they say is history as Sophia Popov would overcome all the odds to complete a truly remarkable feat coming from unknown pro to Major Champion defeating Jasmine Suwannapura by 2 shots to etch her name in the history books forever, truly one of the most unbelievable tales. This year back playing on Epson Tour in Arizona would see Popov win Carlisle Arizona Women's Classic just a little over a year after giving birth to her little girl Maya and what makes the story even better is Sophia won the event on Mother's Day of all days to win in front of her daughter. Please be sure to share this fantastic episode around as we try to tell the full story of Sophia Popov. Listen/Download on all the usual platforms and let's spread the word, one of the best episodes i've done on here!
In this episode I was pleased to be joined by a truly talented young player in 2023 European Ladies' Amateur Champion, 3x Palmer Cup Participant & Former World Number 1 Amateur Julia Lopez Ramirez as we discuss her upbringing, brilliant amateur career and what her rookie season on LPGA Tour has looked like in her own view so far. Julia is from Benahavis in Malaga and developed her impressive driving ability from getting in her own words 'teased by her coach' that he could hit it further. Julia would go to Mississippi State University as part of the Mississippi Bulldogs and would win 8 individual titles which included the prestigious 2023 European Ladies' Amateur Championship defeating then World Number 1 player Ingrid Lindblad in a thrilling final as well as participating in 3x Palmer Cups for Team International, 2023 Vagliano Trophy participant, 2023 Espirito Santo Trophy participant for Spain & 3x European Ladies' Amateur Team Championships for Spain which included winning for Spain in 2023 alongside ANWA champion Carla Bernat Escuder, Carolina Lopez-Chacarra, Cayetana Fernandez, Tejedo Mulet & Lopez Ortega. Julia would also be the 2023 Southeastern Conference Player of the Year & of course Number 1 Amateur in the world in 2024. At the end of 2024 Julia would turn pro and would finish T10th at Final Stage of LPGA Q School to gain a tour card for this year 2025. She would tee it up in her first full event as a LPGA pro in Bradenton, Florida for Founders Cup before struggling with a shoulder injury that would hinder her start to the year before finding form early summer finishing T29th at Liberty National for Mizuho Americas Open followed by T45 at Mexico Riviera Maya. At Erin Hills for US Womens Open in June would see Julia be joint first round leader and 2nd going into the final day being in the final group at a major, although it didn't go to plan on the Sunday Julia sees the positives from that week and would make the weekend at 2 of the next majors T36th at KPMG PGA Championship & T28th at Evian Championship. At the Scottish Women's Open in July it would see Julia post her best LPGA Tour finish at Dundonald Links finishing T3rd before struggling at the tough Royal Porthcawl for AIG Women's Open. It was a great pleasure to have Julia on the podcast. Such a talented player to watch. I wish her nothing but the best for the future and her battle to make CME Tour Finals. It was a memorable weekend for Connacht golf at Athlone Golf Club as Claremorris and Gort claimed their first AIG Pierce Purcell Shield and Women's Intermediate Foursomes Championships respectively. Gort claimed victory in the Women's Intermediate Foursomes. Having eased past Monkstown 3.5–0.5 in Friday's semi-final, they maintained that form against Munster West champions, Ballyneety in the final. Petra O'Connor and Sinead Collins set the tone with a 6&5 win, before Joan Fogarty and Sara Broderick quickly doubled the advantage by taking their match 7&5. Jane Joyce and Geraldine Connors then secured the half point needed, shaking hands on the 14th green to confirm victory and a first AIG Women's Intermediate Foursomes title for the Galway club. “We weren't expecting to get this far but it's absolutely fantastic for our team,” said Gort team captain Hannah McInerney. “We're just thrilled and very proud of this team. They put a lot of teamwork and dedication into it.” “We have some very seasoned golfers that would be used to match play and then we have a few golfers that are new to golf. One of the women in our first match is two years playing golf so a nice mix.” Team Captain Hannah McInerney spoke to John Mulligan on Saturday Sport.

The PGA TOUR regular season comes to a close with the Wyndham Championship, which unfortunately for the season, was a snooze fest. The AIG Women's Open wrapped up the LPGA's major season. With a LPGA Rookie claiming the prize, the tournament only saw 4 total hours of network coverage over the weekend. President Trump has brought back the Council of Physical Fitness, and it included some of golf's best, like Bryson DeChambeau and Annika Sorenstam. Michael is preparing for an amazing trip to Alaska, and shares some details on his upcoming cruise to one of the world's most scenic locations. In Tuned In, Michael shares the woes of being left along for a week, while Alex is in awe of the wholesomeness of local news in the midwest. This week's guest is Matt McQueary, the Director of Golf Sales and Marketing at Big Cedar Lodge. Matt chats with Alex about what makes this golf mecca in The Ozarks so special, and how Johnny Morris (of Bass Pro Shops) keeps making it better and better. The NFL is back as football games are going to start taking over the TV again, and Alex could not be happier. Baseball season is running towards the finish, as Michael's Yankees continue to blow the season away and Alex's Red Sox start heating up in the AL East. As the guys #AlwaysEndWithFood, Alex asks why ranch is so much better in the midwest, while Michael shares the big news in Savannah of a local superstar chef closing her restuarant that started it all. We've got a two part episode tonight with Big Randy and Cody live from Wales after Miya Yamashita wins the AIG Women's Open at Royal Porthcawl. Then in part two, (1:19:15) it's Soly and DJ with a recap of the Wyndham where Cameron Young is - at last - a PGA Tour winner as he blitzed the field with a six shot victory at Sedgefield. We look at Young's potential place on the Ryder Cup squad (1:33:00), offer some ServPro Mulligans, look at some notable names missing the PGA Tour Playoffs, IBF's departure from the CBS booth, and an interesting Money in Sport article on the state of the USGA's financials ahead of their next TV contract negotiations for 2027. Andy and Brendan! are joined by The Boys for the Victory Monday to end all Victory Mondays. PJ and Joseph LaMagna are ecstatic after Cameron Young secured his first PGA Tour win at the Wyndham, becoming the 1,000th unique winner in Tour history. Brendan has some questions about how we arrived at the 1,000 number, perhaps throwing an asterisk on the forever-nickname of "Mr. 1,000." There's plenty of debate about Cameron's Ryder Cup standing heading into the event in his home state and a potential playoff push for Playoff P coming up. PJ walks everyone through his mentality throughout the weekend as it became clear that the NYGC stalwart was going to win for the first time. LaMagna also sheds some light on real improvements in Young's game that could lead to a #floodgates situation following this win. Andy and Brendan then discuss some Coffee Golf, chatting through Miyu Yamashita's win at the AIG Women's Open. Jackson Koivun gets some love for his performance at the Wyndham despite skipping the Western Am, which was won by Jase Summy at Skokie Country Club. As you could probably imagine, the majority of this episode focuses on Cameron Young and the manifestation of his first-ever win and ensuing lasting legacy as Mr. 1,000 on the PGA Tour.

Georgia Hall won the AIG Women's Open at Royal Lytham & St Annes in 2018, just five years after triumphing in the R&A Women's Amateur Championship. Georgia's victory wasn't just special because it was her first major, but also because her dad Wayne caddied for her that week. A superb final round of five-under-par featured numerous highlights, and Georgia was the first British winner of the event since Catriona Matthew clinched the title at the same venue in 2009. Georgia, who began playing golf aged seven after her dad took her to a driving range near their Bournemouth home, doubled her LPGA win tally when she triumphed in the Cambio Portland Classic in 2020. The three-time European Solheim Cup player is a two-time Ladies European Tour order of merit winner, in 2017 and 2018. Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley slipped into the field in the 50th place after Tom Kim melted down at the FedEx St. Jude Classic in Memphis a week ago and took full advantage at Castle Pines by winning the BMW Championship and vaulting himself into 4th place in the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup standings with one week to play. The Break80 Podcast was in Colorado at Castle Pines and we will give you some insights to what we saw and heard on the ground this week, including our time inside the ropes with Peyton Manning and Wyndham Clark. The President's Cup automatic qualifiers are set for the United States and International teams for next month's event in Montreal. We will talk about who we think would be great captain's picks and who we don't like. Lydia Ko stayed on a heater by winning the AIG Women's Open in miserable conditions at the Old Course this week. It's week two of the FedEx Cup Playoffs and Andy and Brendan are ready for Denver! This episode starts with a celebration of fall temperatures in August before some back and forth about where folks in town for the DNC are playing golf in the Chicago area. After the debut of "Lobbyist Minute" concludes, the two discuss the not-so-great TV ratings from last week's playoff event at TPC Southwind and wonder why the PGA Tour's "most consequential" tournament happens in Memphis in the heat of August. The conversation then turns to the latest PGA Tour rules proposal, a reduction in full-field sizes and full-exempt status in an effort to complete cuts on Fridays, while also increasing signature event fields. This then leads Andy and Brendan into a preview of this week's BMW Championship at Castle Pines, where players will have to tackle the elevation in Colorado. Next, they preview the Event of the Year, the AIG Women's Open at St. Andrews, discussing the top storylines and which players to watch during coffee golf. The Schedule of the Week discussion wraps up with a look at this week's Danish DP World Tour event, the Ally Challenge on the Senior Tour, and the APGA Cisco Invitational. To finish things up, Andy and Brendan debate how much beer is considered a "year's supply" and share stories of over-purchasing for crowds at home.
