Atheist Armin Navabi tackles Matt Slick's version of the transcendental argument for God (TAG) in chapter 14 of his book, "Why There Is No God." TAG is an attempt to demonstrate the existence of God using the Laws of Logic. These laws would include the Law of Identity, the Law of Non-Contradiction, and the Law of Excluded Middle. Armin believes that while the argument is structurally sound, it commits the fallacy of equivocation. He states, "The phenomena these laws refer to would continue to exist regardless of whether a deity or anyone else thought about them... Minds are necessary only to describe that phenomenon, not to make it true." Is TAG a good argument, or should it be discarded as a failed attempt to demonstrate that God exists? This will be the topic of today's show! As always, come join the show and bring your questions! Callers welcome at the end.
You're about to see the Transcendental Argument for God in action when atheism and Christianity collide. In this compelling episode of the Worldview Legacy podcast, Joel Settecase steps into the hot seat on the "Real Atheology, a Philosophy of Religion Podcast," hosted by Benjamin Blake Speed Watkins. The conversation centers around one of the most profound questions in moral philosophy: Does Objective Morality Require God? Join Joel and Ben as they engage in a rigorous and respectful dialogue, exploring their contrasting views on the nature of morality and meta-ethics. Ben presents his case for ethical non-naturalism, arguing that objective moral values can exist independently of God. Joel counters by grounding moral truths in the very nature of God, asserting that without a divine being, objective morality lacks a coherent foundation. Key Topics Covered: The distinction between moral values and moral obligations. Ethical non-naturalism vs. theistic moral realism. The relationship between general and special revelation in understanding morality. The coherence (or incoherence) of abstract moral propositions without a divine mind. Joel's challenge to atheism and the implications of God's necessary existence for morality and knowledge. The episode concludes with a thought-provoking challenge from Joel, inviting listeners to consider the Christian worldview and its robust answers to the moral questions that shape our lives.

Apologetics is the term used to describe "making a defense" of the hope we have as Christians (1 Peter 3:15-16). During this series, we will be discussing different objections to the Christian faith and hope to equip our church with ways to think about God's world. In today's episode, Vinnie welcomes in special guest Lindsay Brooks (from Apologetics.com) to discuss the role of thinking philosophically, especially when considering the idea of the Transcendental Argument for the Existence of God. Ben Edwards talks with Dr. Michael Riley about the transcendental argument for God's existence.
What Is the Transcendental Argument for God?The Transcendental Argument for God (TAG) was first developed by Cornelius Van Til, the godfather of Presuppositional Apologetics. Since Van Til first articulated it, it has been picked up and worked on by subsequent theologians and apologists. Today you're going to hear from Joel Settecase, Kevin Blessum, Brian Kurkjian and Rob Barker. Joel is the President of The Think Institute (TTI) and host of the Worldview Legacy Podcast. Kevin is a TTI board member. Brian is developing a really cool resource for TTI, and Rob Barker helps run the ThinkSquad community. Each of them is a dad. Each of them is seeking to disciple his family in the Christian faith. And these are exactly the four guys you want to hear from, if you want to know more about TAG and how to use it to respond to the toughest challenges to Christianity today. Specifically, you're going to learn: • Why logic presupposes God—AND why “not logic” also presupposes God! • Why logic cannot merely be something humans evolved with. • What the Transcendental Argument is and how to use it to defend your faith. ---- Related Resources: • Article: What Is TAG, the Transcendental Argument for God? In this final episode of a three part series on John McDowell's Mind and World, I take a look at McDowell's Transcendental Argument. I feel his transcendental argument comes up a bit short in making McDowell's case and neither does it seem to hold the same gravitas as other transcendental arguments like Kant's. Basically, the conclusions sound a lot like the premises. But, McDowell makes another interesting claim namely that there is nothing unnatural about our role as conceptualizers and judgement-makers in carving out the epistemic content of our worldviews. Our normative nature is, well, natural. Natural to us anyway. And, if we acknowledge this, then we see that there is not some divorce or separation of us from the world when we apply concepts to our perception of the world. Our way of seeing is no less natural than a cat's way of seeing. It's just unique to us. And, to fill out how we might understand how the rational and social can be fully natural, we need to look at Aristotle's ethical theory. Which we will. In the episode.
John Frame's TAG Argument Frame finishes up his critique of VanTil's TAG argument and one that focuses on a big point of contention of TAG users – the apologetic use of probability and certainty. We often hear the same objections to TAG based on similar mistakes. A year ago I did a specific stream presenting TAG and why it holds up against TANG found here: https://youtu.be/tx3ssbjb3XsI covered the supposed transcendental argument for the non-existence of God, but we saw this was based on a fallacious understanding of theological voluntarism. Today we will cover more common and simpler objections to TAG which are usually based on misunderstandings, fallacies and basic blunders.
The Transcendental Argument for the Existence of God (TAG) is the argument that attempts to prove the existence of God by arguing that logic, morals, and science ultimately presuppose a supreme being and that God must therefore be the source of logic and morals. A version was formulated by Immanuel Kant in his 1763 work The Only Possible Argument in Support of a Demonstration of the Existence of God, and most contemporary formulations of the transcendental argument have been developed within the framework of Christian presuppositional apologetics. Introduction: Today we want to move on from traditional arguments for God, the ontological, the cosmological and the teleological to some new arguments advanced for the existence of God. Today we want to look at what is known as the transcendental argument for God. This is an argument implemented by Cornelius Van Til, perfected by Greg Bahnsen and is now widely used by Presuppositionalists, this is a particular brand of Reformed apologists. The transcendental argument as a type of argument was first used and named by Immanuel Kant. He proposed the transcendental argument to demonstrate contrary to the scepticism of David Hume that things are known by sense alone, and contrary to Liebniz that things are known by reason alone, that things are known by a combination of sense and categories the mind brings to anything we are encountering. In other words, when we know anything we know it by what our senses experience, but also by previous innate categories the mind brings that helps us make sense of the data, like space and causality. These presuppositions in combination with what our sense experience enable us to know things. This transcendental way of knowing became a staple of Van Til’s apologetic method. Cornelius Van Til, 1895-1987 was a Reformed Theologian who taught at Princeton and then at Westminster in America. And because of His Reformed theology was critical of traditional arguments for God. You see most traditional arguments for God can be put in the rational or empirical category. In other words, they rest on man’s ability to reason from what man is able to identify as foundational truth; or its rests on man’s ability to scrutinise the universe and reason his way to God. Both rationalism and empiricism as epistemological starting points for Apologetics contradict what the Bible teaches... Read More Source
Classical Apologetics: With Dr. Ken SamplesIn this theology podcast Kenneth R. Samples (a scholar from Reasons to Believe) joins Josh Lewis on The Remnant Radio to discuss the classical Apologetic arguments. We discuss the Cosmological Argument, the Teleological argument, the Ontological argument, the Moral Argument, the Transcendental Argument, and Presuppositional Arguments.Cosmological argument – Argues that the existence of the universe demonstrates that God exists. Various primary arguments from cosmology and the nature of causation are often offered to support the cosmological argument.Teleological argument – Argues that there is a purposeful design in the world around us, and a design requires a designer.Ontological argument – Argues that the very concept of God demands that there is an actual existent God.Moral Argument – Argues that there are objectively valid moral values, and therefore, there must be an absolute from which they are derived.Transcendental Argument – Argues that all our abilities to think and reason require the existence of God.Presuppositional Arguments – Argues that the basic beliefs of theists and non-theists require God as a necessary precondition. As a Reasons to Believe scholar Ken has a great passion to help people understand and see the truth and relevance of Christianity's truth-claims. His writings and lectures at Reasons to Believe focus on showing how the great doctrinal truths of the faith (the Trinity, the Incarnation, the Atonement, creation ex nihilo, salvation by grace, etc.) are uniquely compatible with reason. This approach reflects the historic Christian apologetic statement - "faith seeking understanding." Can anyone reason without god? Can people find logic without a creator? Is TAG anymore than a "I know you are but what am I" game with god? Your call makes it awesome.
What is the transcendental argument for the existence of God? Logic, morals, and science ultimately presuppose the Christian worldview and God's transcendent character is the source of logic and morals.
