On today's podcast on truth you talk about Truth being beyond the mind. I've long been curious as to how all similar concepts that we might lump under "ethics", "eternal values" or "the verities" fit in with non-duality. Is it all relative in the Real, in the field beyond good and evil, with no place at all for absolutes? I've been rereading C. S. Lewis's "The Abolition of Man", and he does make a lot of sense about the pitfalls of trying to live in a world where all values are relative. But maybe if it's all ultimately love, that subsumes everything?
The moral argument argues from the reality of morality to the morality of God, so it's important that we establish the objectivity of morality. I provide a number of reasons to reject moral subjectivism in favor of moral objectivism/realism. Then, I describe the nature of our moral experience. This will provide the basis for future episodes where I explore competing hypotheses that purport to explain our moral experience. Morality, like physics, is objective. It is about solving moral problems. In this first part about the nature of objective morality, I discuss "The Principle of Optimism". First stated in "The Beginning of Infinity" by David Deutsch in Chapter 9 of that book titled "Optimism" it states that "All evils are caused by insufficient knowledge". These 7 words have the profound effect of linking epistemology and morality and further, providing people with hope that no matter the conundrum (moral problem) then it, like a puzzle in physics, has a solution which we can find if we try.
When babies are born, are they born with a moral sense? Or do we need society and parental nurturing to develop morally sensible individuals?Joining me today for a conversation on the origin of morality, Stanley Samuel. In an earlier episode, Stanley and I discussed the objective and subjective nature of morality. Today we are addressing the question of who is the author of moral sense among sentient beings, specifically humans. Is morality merely a self-preserving tendency for humans? What we call moral truths today, are they objective or subjective? In other words, are moral truths objectively true and thus true independently of what our society says? An atheist cannot logically make objective moral claims. He cannot logically say that any action at all is objectively right or objectively wrong. Yet, many atheists do make such claims. Many atheists do believe that things like rape, murder, theft, etc., are not just subjectively wrong, but actually wrong. Atheists seem to recognize a moral code, even though no such moral code could exist without God. What does that tell us about atheism, God, and morality? Let's talk about that now.
