In Season 10, we are going to tackle the most basic question of them all: Does God exist? While there may not be a single, knock-down argument for the existence of God, the cumulative case is very strong. Over the course of this season, we will consider 8 or 9 arguments that, when you put them together, make an utterly compelling case for God's existence — and specifically for the existence of the God of the Bible. We hope you join us on our journey through this season! We always love to hear from you. Renowned Christian philosopher and theologian Dr. Paul Copan joins us to explore our shared values and address the ethical questions people are faced with when reading the Bible. He discusses how modern readers often overlook the Torah's revolutionary impact by viewing it solely through a contemporary lens, which strips it of historical context. Together, we examine the Mosaic laws in contrast to other ancient laws, like the Code of Hammurabi, revealing just how transformative the Torah was within its pagan surroundings. Dr. Copan shares his approach to interpreting morally challenging passages, applying a “charitability and Golden Rule” perspective that uncovers the depths in the Torah's narratives. Dr. Copan provides a nuanced understanding focused on careful textual analysis. He highlights the Bible's distinct stance on slavery, distinguishing it from the brutal chattel slavery of later times and showing how Judeo-Christian values contributed to its eventual abolition. Naysayers and skeptics are challenged to rethink their preconceived notions about the Torah, especially regarding topics like divine justice, slavery, capital punishment, the Wayward Son, the Sotah ritual, and other often misunderstood sections. What are we to make of what appears to be God's call to wipe out Canaanites and Amalekites? How do we understand the massive loss of life decreed by God in the Great Flood and the death of the Egyptian first-born? This is a discussion you don't want to miss. --- • Bio: Paul Copan (Ph.D., Philosophy, Marquette University) is a Christian theologian, analytic philosopher, apologist, and author. He is currently a professor at the Palm Beach Atlantic University (Florida) and holds the endowed Pledger Family Chair of Philosophy and Ethics. He is author or editor of nearly 50 books, including the very popular, strong-selling book Is God a Moral Monster? as well as its companion volume, the award-winning Is God a Vindictive Bully? He is coeditor of The Routledge Companion to Philosophy of Religion, The Naturalness of Theistic Belief, Philosophy of Religion: Classic and Contemporary Issues, and The Kalām Cosmological Argument (a two-volume anthology). He is coauthor of Creation out of Nothing and Biblical Ethics: Walking in the Way of Wisdom. He has also contributed essays to over 60 books, both scholarly and popular, and he has authored a number of articles in professional journals. The cosmological argument is one of the most famous arguments for God's existence. It is usually stated as: P1. Everything that begins to exist has a cause. P2. The universe began to exist. C. Therefore, the universe has a cause. Atheist Armin Navabi responds to this argument in chapter 11 of his book, "Why There is No God." Chapter 11 is titled, "If there is no God, where did everything come from? Without God, there is no explanation." He claims in the chapter that "not knowing the answer does not give us free range to make something up." In fact, he believes this Christian argument commits the "god of the gaps" fallacy, is special pleading, misunderstands physics, and actually says nothing about God. He claims that, "Even if we were to accept that the universe required some sort of 'prime mover,' or originating force, there is no evidence to suggest that this force must conform to any of the traits generally attributed to a god." So as we've been doing in this series, let's take a look at Armin's chapter and see how we can respond well. Where does he misunderstand the cosmological argument? How can Christians use this argument as a powerful argument for God's existence? Join me to see!

Many have attempted to discredit the Kalam Cosmological Argument for God. Have they succeeded? Join Frank for this special midweek podcast episode as he hosts not one, but TWO of the most accomplished Christian philosophers, Dr. William Lane Craig and Dr. Stephen C. Meyer. Both guests present their own approaches to the argument and answer the main objections to it. And during the second half of the show, they tackle a long list of thought-provoking (and sometimes mind-boggling) listener questions! Including: If God created the universe, who created God? How is math the product of a mind? What does "began to exist" mean in the Kalam cosmological argument? How do we know the creator is the Christian God? What is the Borde-Guth-Vilenkin (BGV) theorem? In this episode from the archives we're revisiting a debate between two Christian philosophers on the arguments for God. AC Grayling is one of the UK's most well known atheist thinkers. His book The God Argument claims to refute the key arguments for God and show why humanism is the best way forward. Christian Philosopher Peter S Williams interacted with Grayling who he believes badly misunderstood the arguments for God in his book. In today's episode of Talk Heathen, the entertaining pair of ObjectivelyDan and Forrest Valkai are live today. They work through questions about evolution and the age of the earth. First is Tom from MI who identifies as a deist and believes god exists but is not involved in his life. He is hopeful and wishful that god exists because it makes him happy. Why should we believe god exists? Does wishing something to be true make it true? Would you use this line of thinking for anything else? Do you actually believe this as a fact or is it just something that makes you happy? Does it matter that things are true? We don't just believe stuff because it makes us happy, even if it feels good. There must be some reality in there somewhere. David from CA wants to give the hosts a chance to prove evolution since no one has ever heard of it in history. We have mountains of proof and this is one of the most well documented theories in science. Why should we care what one person's family thinks about evolution? If the Bible has no mention of something does that mean it does not exist? Individuals don't evolve; it is the whole population. When an advantage is gained in one environment, fitness is lost in another environment. As Forrest calmly describes how things work, the caller insists that it is all science fiction. He also thinks the planet was designed for humans and does not understand why we protect endangered species. Does the puddle say that this hole in the ground was designed for me? The hosts ask the caller how radiometric dating works, and no answer is provided. If you don't understand the basic principles of how biology works, how can you possibly critique it?Mark in NY is trying to keep an open mind about theism and sees a strong line of reasoning that god exists because god is the explanation for why there is anything at all. Human beings want there to be an answer even when we don't have one. The Cosmological Argument lies within metaphysics and any kind of claim can be made with this. Unless we have material words, we are just taking ideas out of thin air. These types of things are unfalsifiable. We can't give metaphysics special pleading. Yasir from India explains how the science teacher in school would not talk about evolution and tells the students to study it on their own. He has questions about speciation, and Forest gladly explains the steps. There is no single set definition of what a species is. Family lines are also arbitrary, for instance, look up the definition of a fish. If you arrange these tax groups in a certain way, you could call everything on land fish. We are not more evolved than other species. Everything that is currently alive, has evolved. We change the definitions of groups as we learn more. Forrest recommends a book called, The Ancestor's Tale by Richard Dawkins. Thank you everyone for tuning in. Please have your grandma call next week because we are pro-grandma.

The Big Bang • Alexander Friedmann used Einstein's theory of general relativity to propose an expanding Universe• Catholic priest and professional astronomer Georges Lemaitre proposed what would later be called “the Big Bang theory” in 1927 using Einstein's theory of general relativity and Friedmann's expanding model• This basic model is still being tested and tweaked today• In 1929, Edwin Hubble discovered that far-away stars are “red-shifting” in every direction• This only makes sense if the Universe is expanding• If we extrapolate backwards, we end up with a fixed point at the beginning of the Universe!• Atheists were quick to propose an alternative solution: what if the Universe was expanding, but matter is continuously created to keep the average density the same?• This is called the “steady state” hypothesis• This would allow for an infinitely old Universe• In the 1960s, Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson discovered the “cosmic microwave background radiation”• If you point a radio telescope at the space between stars, you will hear faint interference• This demonstrated that the Universe was formerly more dense than now, which refutes the steady state hypothesis In basic terms, what does the Big Bang theory say? • The Universe began approximately 13.7 billion years ago• Space and matter have been expanding and cooling since then What is the current state of the Big Bang? • We will never be able to travel back in time to observe the beginning• Physicists used high-energy collisions to test hypotheses related to the Big Bang• There is a physical restriction on understanding the first moment of the Big Bang Are there viable alternatives to the Big Bang? • Oscillating universe — Universes expand and contract until the right one pops out• Multiple Universes — Infinite number of Universes exist beyond our ability to observe them• Inflationary models• Hawking's theory William Lane Craig on Alternatives Oscillating Model: • Violates the laws of physics (a beginning singularity is inevitable according to general relativity)• Not enough density in the universe to contract the universe (pg. 114)• The universe is actually speeding up in its expansion• Some estimates say that only 100 universes could have existed before this one (does not resolve the problem for atheists) (pg. 115) Multiple universes (especially one with an eternal mother universe): • Cannot explain the beginning of the model (a quantum sea of energy is something, not nothing)• Eventually, all universes would collide together (pg. 117) Inflationary models: • One cyclic model is inconsistent with the string theory that it is based on• Another chaotic inflation model does not resolve the problem of a beginning (pgs. 116-117) Hawking's theory: • Uses imaginary numbers in the equations to describe the universe• Essentially an attempt to game the equations to remove the origin of the universe (pg. 120)

A cosmological argument is any argument that uses the existence of the world to infer the existence of God. In this episode, we examine two of the three best-known and debated cosmological arguments: Aquinas' argument from change, and Liebnitz' argument from contingency. Aquinas sees God as the force that pushes the universe forward, allowing concrete objects to change from potential to actual. Liebnitz asks the question, “Why is there something instead of nothing?” and concludes that God must be fundamental and necessary, since the universe cannot be.LinksVisit our website: https://www.wellreadchristian.comCheck our our blog: https://www.wellreadchristian.com/blogFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/wellreadchristianInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/wellreadchristianYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfGxz4OH1-hVD0fL9AWR4Xg
This episode we look at yet another proof of God, this time one which argues that God is a necessary aspect in the creation of the universe. This is known as the Cosmological Argument and is championed by many great thinkers, including Thomas Aquinas. Also included is a riveting game of Name that Saint! The existence of creation points inevitably to the existence of a Creator. In this episode, Barry Cooper outlines the cosmological argument for the existence of God, the first cause. Read the transcript: https://simplyputpodcast.com/the-cosmological-argument/
In this week's episode of Apologetics Profile, Daniel Ray concludes his discussion with CERN experimental particle physicist Dr. Michael Strauss. They explore further wondrous evidences of God's design and handiwork at levels never before imagined by anyone. Mathematics and the designs in the physical world, as counterintuitive as they may seem to our common sense, all point us to a benevolent Creator and reveal to us many of the invisible attributes of the Logos, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. This two-part podcast was recorded in January 2022 on the campus of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary during their annual Defend apologetics conference (www.DefendTheFaith.net).Dr. Michael Strauss is an experimental particle physicist currently doing research on the ATLAS detector, one of the two multi-purpose particle detectors located on the Large Hadron Collider at CERN near Geneva, Switzerland. He has been a professor at the University of Oklahoma in Norman since 1995. He is also a Christian and his web-site and blog are a result of the many discussions he has had, and questions he receives about the relationship between science, rational thinking, objective evidence, and Christian faith.ADDITIONAL RESOURCES: Dr. Michael Strauss's webpage: www.michaelgstrauss.com Book - The Creator Revealed - A Physicist Examines the Big Bang and the Bible, (2019) by Dr. Michael Strauss: https://amzn.to/3qnXQxj Watchman Fellowship 4-page Profile on Cosmos (TV series): watchman.org/files/Profilecosmos.pdf Watchman Fellowship 4-page Profile on Scientism: www.watchman.org/scientism/ProfileScientism.pdf SUPPORT: Help us create more content like this. On today's ID the Future, philosopher Jay Richards offers advices on engaging with evolutionists over the issues of origins, evolution, and intelligent design. In his conversation with host Casey Luskin, he says that if someone tells you he's a theistic evolutionist, first find out what he means by theism and evolution. The latter term, in particular, can have widely varying meanings, and the average lay persons who see themselves as theistic evolutionists likely see God as actively and creatively working in the history of life to steer evolutionary outcomes, including the origin of humanity. What they may not realize is that such a view takes them well off the reservation of what academic theistic evolutionists generally mean by the term Read More › Source
