Holiday season is upon us, and that means, for some of us, increased anxiety about food! You might have a sinking feeling in your belly, worrying about all of the delicious food that tends to come with the holidays! That doesn't have to be the case, though, and I am here in this episode to walk you through all of the ins and outs of eating during the holiday season! Diet culture resulting in articles with headlines such as How to Eat Healthy During the Holidays doesn't help matters. In fact, it's probably because of that that so many of us deal with anxiety around holiday eating in the first place! A lot of those tips are about stuffing yourself with salad so that you don't stuff yourself with stuffing, but rest assured, that is not the type of tip that you can expect to hear from me in this episode! I start with what I feel you should do before eating during the holidays – so before the holiday treats arrive. Visualization is so key because it works, so visualize what it would look like for you to enjoy food from that holiday treat tray – to truly enjoy it and experience it without diet culture looking over your shoulder trying to make you feel guilty about it. I also share that you should survey the food and what's available before taking a plate so that you might prevent the my eyes were bigger than my stomach problem. I also discuss mindful eating – what that means and how to go about doing it, including but not limited to gauging how satisfying the food is and assessing what memories are associated with the foods that you eat. I address how to deal with food FOMO (fear of missing out) and what to do if you want more of something even when you know that eating more would not make you feel very good. I also point toward what to do after the meal is done, affirming that yes, you need to move on but that you should first reflect on the experience. I really hope that you enjoy listening to this episode of The SociEATy Podcast! I hope that these tips are helpful for you, and I want you to feel empowered and to begin working toward intuitive eating if you haven't already. Holidays should be a time to make memories, not to stress about food! I would also be very grateful if you were to leave a review on whatever platform that you use to listen as I read each and every one of your reviews and it helps us continue to do this. If you aren't already, be sure to also subscribe to The SociEATy Podcast so that you never miss an episode!   Time Stamps [1:13] – We discover that eating during the holiday season is this episode's topic. In the first episode Megan talked about why we tend to overeat in the afternoon or evening (or whenever we get home) and how we can alter our habits to avoid brain fog and that "I must eat all the things" feeling at the end of a day. In today's episode, Megan shares more about this and how restriction will always lead to over-doing it. We talk about the impact of restriction, how a non-diet approach helps, and we talk about why you should absolutely  never tell yourself that your diet starts January 1st. Decrease The Health and Behavioral Issues From Holiday Foods Many of the foods at grandma's house may be healthy for most, but act as “triggers” for children on the autism spectrum. What can you do when your child wants to eat foods he should not eat? If you know that food will create strong behavioral and physical problems for him, of course it is best to avoid them altogether… but that is not always easy during the holidays. It is my wish to help you through these holidays. These days can be very trying for moms of children on the autism spectrum. We don't want our children to feel isolated or shut out from the festivities, but when we know issues will arise from the food at the celebration, how do we measure the pros and cons?  What can we do? We can definitely ask Grandma to use only ingredients that are gluten-free, non-dairy, with no added food colorings or artificial ingredients. But this is real life. Will she do it? Does she know how? You can educate Grandma, letting her know that others at the table will probably feel better after the meal too. You can certainly give it a try. Top Takeaways The only purpose of food is to satiate hunger and for our health. That’s it. If we’re not eating for these reasons, we’re using it as a way to fill our lives when something is missing. Whether it be something in a relationship or in our work, we use food to fill a void. Start practicing, listening, turning, inwards, asking yourself why you are eating. Are you really hungry? Or is it something else? Focus on and trust your intuition. Our bodies already have cues we need. It has the fullness cue that knows when it’s had enough. It has the hunger cue to let us know when it needs fuel. But sometimes we're just so disconnected from our bodies because we've been in our heads for so long that we have no idea. We make decisions based on what we've been told or what we believe. “I don’t deserve this” or “I’m not worthy”. But when you listen to our body, you open yourself up to being able to hear people when they say that you are enough and know that it’s true. Notice when you are avoiding and challenge it. One of the areas of my life that always caused a lot of anxiety was my bank account and I see this a lot in my clients. It’s the avoidance attachment pattern. For example, when your relationship with money is not as healthy as you would want it to be, it's easier to not look at it. It’s easier to not deal. But it's not going to get any better if we don't face it. It's the same with what you put in your body. It’s easier to not observe and be mindful of what we eat but it doesn’t make us feel good. When you avoid, you don't fail but you can't make it better. One thing is how you do everything. If you are intentional with your eating, you're going to be intentional with your spending, with your communication, with your relationship, the sex you have and the clothes you buy. You're just going to be intentional. Remember, you have the power. You can take it one little baby step at a time. You’ve got the choice. Choose the woman you want to be over the woman you were.

Thanksgiving this year will look very different than past years. We are going to be hosting Thanksgiving I think the only other guests may be my brother in law, sister in law, nephew and my mom. This will be very different than last year when we sent to Oregon and spent the time with my extended family which was well over 50 people! Even though we have the small gathering we are still going to make the full meal. To be honest I tried to pare down the menu but that got vetoed by the kids. Good news is that my son will make potatoes, stuffing and turkey and I’ll make a pie, couple of vegetable dishes. My sister in law will help too. Holidays are wonderful occasions but I want to load you with 10 strategies to make sure you don’t over indulge and really enjoy this year. We’ve had so many challenges this 2020 and I want to help you enjoy this season as best as possible to end this year on an up note leading into 2021.1) Don’t eat everything on the buffet table, check out what the choices are and determine what you really want to eat. Check out all the options before you put anything on your plate2) Take 10 seconds or a couple of breaths before taking seconds. And don’t take seconds just because you see others taking seconds3) Distance yourself from buffets. If it’s out of reach-it’s harder to access the food. You’re less likely to grab just one more cookie/meatball/slice of cheese4) Don’t go hungry to a gathering. Some think if they don’t eat breakfast or lunch then they can eat more at the holiday party then that’s a great idea. So wrong-first of all I never encourage skipping meals; second you get cranky and irritable; when you’re very hungry you never make good choices. Make sure you have healthy choices the day of the function/gathering5) Watch out for drinks-egg nog or other festive drinks can be very calorie dense, aim for water or sparking seltzer for better more refreshing choices6) Make room for veggies-ideally ½ your plate should be filled with vegetables! So when you’re checking out the buffet table-fill that plate with healthy nutrient dense vegetables. This results in less room for other foods7) Offer to bring a healthy dish. And make sure this is something that you like and enjoy. I’m known to bring a fruit platter or veggies and hummus to gatherings. My work friends always ask me to bring this kale and sweet potato dish that obviously is a healthy choice8) When you go shopping, go with a list and a contently full belly-if you shop hungry you’re more likely to make impulse purchases and not healthy choices9) Pay attention to what really matters-spending time with friends, coworkers or loved ones. Enjoy their company, conversation, maybe play a game 10) Enjoy yourself. This is not the time to beat yourself up or guild yourself because you ate 3 cookies! Celebrations should be celebratory and we don’t want to rack ourselves with guiltIf you’re interested in a FREE 30 minute Discovery call to identify your nutrition and family meal planning needs sign up here: https://www.adventuresinfeedingmyfam.com/work-with-meAs always you can connect with me: IG @adventuresinfeedingmyfam adventuresinfeedingmyfam.com Facebook Group: Adventures In Feeding My Fam
