Meeting Andy Sarkany today was a true honor. Andy dedicates his time to educating young people across the country about the Holocaust. As a young survivor, he is a valuable source of firsthand information, especially considering that many older survivors have unfortunately passed away. It is crucial that we seize the opportunity to learn from individuals like Andy who can still share their powerful stories with us. Endre (Andy) Sarkany was born in Budapest, Hungary on October 31, 1936. The building he lived in was located inside the Budapest ghetto which is where he remained during the Holocaust. The building housed a nursery/kindergarten on the ground floor. The school was affiliated with the Jewish Agency of Hungary and was led by Mr. Eugene Polnay. The building also housed on the top floor a dance, acrobat, and ballet studio. These facts were significant in Endre's survival and that of at least 150 orphaned children. Endre's father was taken to Mauthausen concentration camp in the spring of 1944, fortunately, he survived. After WWII, Hungary became a communist nation. Although Endre graduated high school in 1955, he was not accepted to university because he was deemed an undesirable element of society. This label was given to anyone who owned a business before the communists took over the country. Endre was fortunate to escape Hungary after the October 1956 uprising and was able to immigrate to the United States.  He received his bachelor's degree from Tusculum College in Tennessee and his Master of Science degree in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.  Endre worked for both the McDonald Douglas Corporation and the IBM Corporation. Over the past 10 years, Endre has been speaking to students about his personal experiences during the Holocaust, living under the brutality of the Soviet regime in Hungary, and finding a home in the United States. Andy is married, has a daughter and son, and five grandchildren.

Jim Boone is entering his first season as the Head Men's Basketball Coach at Greensboro College in North Carolina. Boone comes to Greensboro as the 5th active winningest coach among NCAA Division II Coach's and is ranked in the top 30 all-time for overall wins. In this Episode of Vertical View - I have the opportunity to interview Coach Darius Carter.  Carter is a graduate of Tusculum College earning his bachelors in Sports Management while playing basketball for the Pioneers. Carter is also a graduate of Northern Arizona University where he earned his Masters in Educational Leadership while working as a graduate assistant coach.  Currently, Coach Carter serves as the asst. coach for the men's basketball team at Southern Wesleyan University.  He coaches under the direction of head coach Nick Pasqua. I was intrigued by the 1968 song "The Prophet" by The Wayward Bus. I played that song on my last show. So I did some research and found a repository for such things as research on ESP, records about ESP, tea cozies based on ESP. I found an album by David Hoy, the aforementioned "prophet".  “David Hoy believes the future can be changed…if it can be foreseen. Hoy says “I hope my predictions into the future will be taken away as an experiment in ESP. I make many predictions I cannot explain, but I state them just as they come to me – through a process of mind-release best defined as TIME PROJECTED EMPATHY. In many cases, Hoy frankly hopes that action can be taken to avoid the events he foresees…We predict you will find The Prophet entertainingly awesome.” This record was released in 1970 and doesn't exist in any other format at the moment. But you know I'm gonna bring you the strange. Just like my prom date said about me.  Back cover text: Dr. David Hoy, one of America's foremost authorities on extrasensory perception, is a scholar of extraordinary psychic capacity. You can really hear the original chords.  Gila - This Morning (1973) From Discogs: Formed in early 1969, out of the Stuttgart political commune, as Gila Füchs, we can only guess as to what their music was like in these early days, yet they quickly established themselves as the foremost exponents of psychedelic space-rock. After disbanding for some six months or so, and working as a member of Popol Vuh, Conny Veit decided to form a new incarnation of Gila. This new band was a veritable supergroup, as it featured Popol Vuh leader Florian Fricke and ex-Amon Düül II multi-instrumentalist Daniel Fichelscher. Although hinted at by the earlier Gila, the new Gila sound [ed: this record] was very much in the Popol Vuh style, with medieval and ethnic touches in a complexly textured rock music featuring multi-guitars and female vocals. Whereas Popol Vuh were purely a studio band, Gila toured and played many concerts, and existed until summer 1974. After this Danny Fichelscher joined Popol Vuh, and Gila eventually split. Conny Veit then joined Guru Guru for a short while before disappearing from the scene for several years. He reappeared within the ranks of Popol Vuh some time later. Whether he has made any other music, we don't know. Tory Dandy has been close to football his entire life. Tory's experience as a college football standout at Tusculum College allows him the ability to relate to his clients both on and off the field. In 2006, Tory transitioned to Director of Recruiting with Maximum Sports with veteran agents Eugene Parker and Roosevelt Barnes. Simon Holzapfel, PhD at Arizona State University - PhD - Arizona State University, AZ, 2013-present Physical Activity and Nutrition Science MS - Eastern Kentucky University, KY, 2013 Exercise and Sports Science BA - Tusculum College, TN, 2011 Major: Sports Science; Minor: Coaching Areas of Expertise: Physical Activity Neurorehabilitation Dementia Healthy Lifestyles Exercise we spoke of textbook exercise physiology and science, metabolism and nutrition. we hopefully went over the basics that is taught and all protocols are based upon . as well as metablic testing that includes lactate threshold, VO2 max and substrate utilization. i should add that though he is a professor at ASU, what he’s sharing does not represent the university. always have to add those disclaimers these days. he’s a multi sport athlete himself, and we get into his background in what had him pursue this profession and research, as well as cover some of his races, training and events he’s completed. as always, there are a lot of areas we could go down a rabbit hole on with these topics, to further clarify things- wether they be hot topics or maybe misunderstood, to try and identify the benefits and shortcomings to certain approaches based on individuals - goals, health status, and a whole multitude of other factors.

Richard Jolley, internationally recognized as one of today's most accomplished and inventive glass sculptors, was born in Wichita, Kansas, in 1952. As a youth, he moved to Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and in 1970 began his art training at Tusculum College in Greenville, Tennessee, studying under noted glass artist Michael Taylor. After receiving his BFA from George Peabody College in Nashville (now part of Vanderbilt University), Jolley continued graduate studies at North Carolina's Penland School of Crafts, under the instruction of studio glass artist Richard Ritter. Jolley has participated in over 65 solo museum and gallery exhibitions throughout the United States and in Australia, Europe, Israel, and Japan. Jolley's sculpture takes the form of drawings, busts, totems, suspended figures, birds, the garden -- all exploring issues of the human condition, nature, and the universe through the use of glass, color, and contemporary symbolism. Jolley’s work is alluring, in part because it allows the viewer to escape from the everyday into a dream. His message: Art is not limited by its medium but is open to a continuous exploration of new possibilities for what can be meaningful to the human eye. On May 4, 2014, the Knoxville Museum of Art, Knoxville, Tennessee, debuted Jolley’s new, monumentally scaled sculpture commissioned and created especially for the museum's newly refurbished Great Hall, recently renamed the Ann and Steve Bailey Hall. Cycle of Life measures 100 feet long by 12 feet tall, making it one of the largest figurative glass-and-steel assemblages in the world. Fashioned of thousands of individual cast and blown-glass elements, the massive work unfolds as an epic narrative of the successive phases of life.

Tobin will coach the TC defensive line and will also serve as the team's strength & conditioning coordinator.He coached All-South Atlantic Conference standout Brian Alexander in 2012 as he anchored a defense that finished 30th in the nation in fumble recoveries (13) and 43rd in turnovers gained (24).Tobin joined the TC staff following a six-year stint at nationally-ranked Kutztown University from 2006-11 where he coached the defensive line, kickers, while also serving as strength coach.

Sarah Philipp is a Tusculum College graduate working as Southeastern Sports Medicine in Asheville, North Carolina as an outreach Certified Athletic Trainer at Hendersonville, High School.  She talks about her current job and her experience as a fellow with New Hampshire Musculoskeletal Institute.  She also talks about her recent interest in incorporating yoga into rehabilitative protocols. Rev. Landon Whitsitt is the Vice Moderator of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)   He is the author of Open Source Church:  Making Room for the Wisdom of All.  Drawing his metaphor from open source software, he suggests the church of the future would do well to consider being "open source" regarding welcoming new people and new ideas.  He was the Theologian In Residence at Tusculum College in February 2012.  He graciously agreed to visit the WETS studio and talk with me on Religion For Life.
