Raised by a single mother on Chicago's South Side, he frequently slept on the floor because there were not enough beds. With some lucky breaks — including a scholarship to a prestigious boarding school — he eventually graduated from Harvard Law School. Gov Patrick served as the 71st governor of Massachusetts, from 2007 to 2015. He was the first African American Governor of Massachusetts. A Democrat, Patrick served from 1994 to 1997 as the United States Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division under President Bill Clinton. With the rise of the Tea Party and the election of Donald Trump, many middle- and lower-income white Americans threw their support behind conservative politicians who pledged to make life great again for people like them. But as Dying of Whiteness shows, the right-wing policies that resulted from this white backlash put these voters' very health at risk—and in the end, threaten everyone's well-being. Physician and sociologist Jonathan M. Metzl travels across America's heartland seeking to better understand the politics of racial resentment and its impact on public health. Interviewing a range of Americans, he uncovers how racial anxieties led to the repeal of gun control laws in Missouri, stymied the Affordable Care Act in Tennessee, and fueled massive cuts to schools and social services in Kansas. Although such measures promised to restore greatness to white America, Metzl's systematic analysis of health data dramatically reveals they did just the opposite: these policies made life sicker, harder, and shorter in the very populations they purported to aid.  Thus, white gun suicides soared, life expectancies fell, and school dropout rates rose. Powerful, searing, and sobering, Dying of Whiteness ultimately demonstrates just how much white America would benefit by emphasizing cooperation, rather than by chasing false promises of supremacy.

Comedian Shuler King was born Frank Williams III in Sumter, SC. Known as the kid who cracked jokes, Shuler knew at an early age he was destined to be an entertainer. Shuler grew up in a traditional two-parent household in the Bible Belt of the South, where his parents instilled faith, hard work and education in him and his two siblings. Comedy is his passion, but he took a rather unusual path to get there. Shuler graduated from the University of South Carolina with a B.A. in media arts; while at university, he joined The Mighty Illustrious Zeta Zeta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated. His comedy career began while he was a freshman in college after he took the stage for the very first time at the NCO Club on a military base, and the rest is history. In 2013, he graduated from Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service with a degree in mortuary science. When Shuler isn't on the road performing at comedy clubs and special events across the country, he works as a licensed funeral director and embalmer in Georgia and South Carolina, at his family's funeral business. As Shuler works to keep his family's business and legacy alive, he may be the only comedian/funeral director on the comedy circuit. He has opened for some of the most notable and talented comedians and comediennes in the industry. He credits his parent's strict yet loving upbringing, his harsh surroundings growing up and the state of the country today with giving him his "raw" comedic style. "Comedy isn't about being happy all the time.  Comedy is just as much about pain that people endure. When you hear 20,000 people in an arena laugh at a joke, it's because they all can relate to experiencing that same pain," he says. Shuler is one of the most energetic rising comedians in the business. He credits his unwavering faith in God as the calming force in his life, which keeps him pushing forward through the industry's ups and downs. His hilarious social media videos have quickly become fan favorites, and his video post about Donald Trump went viral and was even played on a U.K. television show. The future is definitely bright for Shuler.

I had the chance to talk with Dr. Jonathan Metzl, author of Dying of Whiteness: How the Politics of Racial Resentment Is Killing America's Heartland. In the era of Donald Trump, many lower- and middle-class white Americans are drawn to politicians who pledge to make their lives great again. But as Dying of Whiteness shows, the policies that result actually place white Americans at ever-greater risk of sickness and death.Physician Jonathan M. Metzl's quest to understand the health implications of "backlash governance" leads him across America's heartland. Interviewing a range of everyday Americans, he examines how racial resentment has fueled pro-gun laws in Missouri, resistance to the Affordable Care Act in Tennessee, and cuts to schools and social services in Kansas. And he shows these policies' costs: increasing deaths by gun suicide, falling life expectancies, and rising dropout rates. White Americans, Metzl argues, must reject the racial hierarchies that promise to aid them but in fact, lead our nation to demise

In times like these, our nation could use a consoler in chief. The type of leader that could ease the fears of a divided country and calm the nerves of frightened families. Make no mistake about it, we are in perilous times. People all over this country are dying - alone. Families are grieving, never getting an opportunity to say goodbye to their loved on - alone. We are all (hopefully) sheltered in our houses, isolated from the outside world, struggling to feel a connection, because we feel ALONE. Any normal, empathetic, decent President, would step to the lectern, or talk to us from the Oval Office, and tell us that we're going to get through this together. They would tell us that there will be time to reflect on how we could have been better prepared for this crisis, but our first priority is saving as many lives as possible. Clinton did it after the Oklahoma City bombing, Bush did it after 9/11, Obama did it after every mass shooting, but not Donald Trump. He's not capable of it. That's not a political statement, that's a reality, a fact. So we're left looking towards each other for support. So as you go through your day, be mindful that we're all in this together. We can be a benefit or burden. We can be helpful or we can be hurtful. We have a choice. I chose to appeal to our commonality. To appeal to the kindness and goodness in each and every one of us. If you want to feel like you're not alone and like someone is listening, I hope you'll find a home here with us on the Starr report.

Welcome to the Starr Report. I'm your host Michael Starr Hopkins. I wanted to take a second to address where we are in this moment in history. This podcast has launched in the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic. Most major cities have sheltered in a place and we're all locked in our houses wondering when things will get back to normal. I want each and every one of you to know that things will get back to normal, but when they do,  we have an obligation to remember this. Remember the heroics of ordinary people like the people who stock your grocery stores or deliver the food to your homes, remember the doctors and the nurses who put their lives in danger, and even gave their lives, to protect each and every one of us. They are the heroes in this moment. We owe it to them to not forget the courage and humanity that they've. We also owe it to them to remember the people who said that some people's lives were less important than the stock market and to remember the people who said we could afford to bail out companies but couldn't afford Universal healthcare. We far too often let the chaos and noise of our politics overwhelm us and numb us to the very things we see with our own eyes. Let's be very clear, this was preventable. Donald Trump didn't create this virus but his failure to adequately respond created this unnecessary disaster.I created “the Starr Report” so that we can figure out how to ensure that when we come out of this tragedy, we come out stronger, and more prepared to create the type of society that we can all be proud of.  Since I can't get into the studio with our guests, we'll have to resort to phone calls and Skype, so be patient with me as I learn the ropes. We'll grow together. This is a moment in history that will literally be a chapter in the history books. Join me as I talk to some of America's most influential voices about their failures, their successes, and how we can learn from each other. This is “The Starr Report”.
