In this episode of the Eccles Business Buzz podcast, host Francis Johnson welcomes Ruchi Watson, Managing Director of the Goff Strategic Leadership Institute, and Maya Jolley, Director of Student Experience and Marketing and Communications at Goff.Together they discuss the importance of experiential learning in the student experience at the David Eccles School of Business. They delve into how hands-on learning opportunities set students up for post-graduation success, and how the Goff institute can assist students to land and succeed in their first internships. The episode explores diverse examples of practical learning, from internships to multidisciplinary team projects, and discusses the impact of strategic leadership in student development. With the elevation of the Goff Strategic Leadership Institute, these programs aim to extend their reach across campus and beyond, fostering a mindset of continuous growth and value creation among students.Eccles Business Buzz is a production of the David Eccles School of Business and is produced by University fm.Episode Quotes:The Goff Institute provides unique experiential learning that goes beyond the classroom.[02:44] There's so many different methods of engaging in experiential learning. I think one thing that we try and really do here at Goff is provide that self-reflection for those students to say, “Hey, you're here on this campus, and there are more opportunities than maybe you even realize that you're already engaging in to practice and build your resume and build your life skills and learn more about yourself so that you can be better set up for success after graduation.”On building students' confidence through experiential learning.[05:33] 51% of Gen Z graduates are not feeling prepared to enter the workforce right now. So, a lot of what we're doing is trying to bolster that so that we can say, "You're growing in confidence, you're getting these experiences here so that when you go into the workforce, you really know already a little bit of what you're good at, what to expect, and then also can really succeed in your future careers."Impactful experiences that students won't find anywhere else but at Eccles School.[10:55] People don't understand necessarily, if I go to a classroom and I learn something, is that valuable? When you pair what you learn with how you do things, then that really is magical. And experiential learning takes you to that place of taking what you know and figuring what to do with it to make it valuable. And so, as we think about that, that is really game changing and something that isn't necessarily happening everywhere. It's really unique to the Eccles School to have experiential learning not only baked in to the core required classes, but a student who's interested in impact investing can go do something at the Sorenson Impact Institute. A student that's interested in, gosh, policy could go work at the Gardner Policy Institute. We have a number of different experiences that you really cannot find anywhere else that are right here at the Eccles School. And that makes us really differentiated and something that, to be honest, not only do we not see in other places, but as we've worked with consultants and other folks that have come in to evaluate what we do, they've said they're not seeing it elsewhere, either. So, it's really exciting to talk about the things that we're doing because you're really not going to find it at other institutions the way that we have it here.Maya discusses how experiential learning pairs well with leadership training. [17:06] I think really blending the leadership education with teaching the how and learning to do is so key and because our programs are multidisciplinary, you're getting engineering students working next to psychology students, working next to finance students to really tackle these huge strategic challenges that are faced by our community partners, which might be a one person startup all the way up to a multi-billion dollar company. So they're working together to tackle these truly, really amazing and nitty gritty and ambiguous challenges. And that is the real world, right? We're not going to leave college and be working on our own. I mean, sure there are certainly silos in the real world, but our own academic silos, we're prepping these students to be able to speak across disciplines to be able to understand the value of acknowledging our own strengths and then acknowledging the strengths of our team members. WARBIRD RADIO - If there were ever a real-life Indiana Jones for the warbird community, it'd be Jay Wisler. Instead of dodging booby traps and uncovering lost temples, Jay has spent over four decades scouring the globe in search of something just as precious—vintage warbird parts. From the dusty corners of forgotten warehouses to the bustling hangars of world-class restoration shops, Jay's relentless quest has helped keep historic aircraft flying for generations. On this episode of Warbird Radio, Matt Jolley sits down with Jay Wisler to talk about his legendary career in the warbird parts industry. Since 1982, Jay's company, Warbird Parts and Memorabilia, has been the go-to source for hard-to-find aircraft components. Before selling his massive inventory to Fagen Fighters Restorations, Jay managed nine warehouses filled to the brim with parts essential to the restoration of iconic aircraft like the North American P-51 Mustang. If you've ever admired an award-winning warbird at Oshkosh or any major airshow, there's a good chance some of Jay's parts helped bring it back to life. His passion for Mustangs is no secret, and when asked about his favorite project, Jay doesn't hesitate: Jack Roush's P-51B, Old Crow. Over the years, he's supplied parts for countless Mustang restorations, ensuring that these legendary fighters remain a fixture in the skies. His philosophy—“If I don't have it, I'll help you find it”—has made him a beloved figure in the warbird community, and in 2014, he was rightfully inducted into the EAA Warbirds Hall of Fame. But Jay isn't just looking back—he's looking ahead. He believes the future of warbird restoration is in good hands with people like Erik Hokuf, founder of AirCorps Aviation. Erik also joins Matt on this episode to discuss the future of warbird restorations, parts manufacturing, and how his team is carrying the torch forward. Based in Bemidji, Minnesota, AirCorps Aviation has become an industry leader, blending precision craftsmanship with modern technology to keep vintage aircraft flying. From FAA Part 21 PMA-certified parts to full-scale restorations, Erik and his team are shaping the next chapter in warbird history.Don't miss this fascinating conversation as Matt Jolley dives into the stories behind the parts, the people, and the passion that fuels the warbird restoration world. The Puritans were a diverse group of evangelically-minded, confessionally reformed pastors of the seventeenth century whose great priority was to glorify God in their personal lives, in their families, and in the churches they served. This week we introduce two lesser-known Puritans from the north of England, Thomas Jolley (or Jollie) and Oliver Heywood, along with some of their brethren. In the crucible of affliction, these men proved the faithfulness of God to those who labour in His harvest fields, even when the harvest is hampered by temptations within and trials without. Warbird Radio to Feature ICAS President John Cudahy on the Popularity of Vintage Military Aircraft at AirshowsWARBIRD RADIO - On this episode Warbird Radio is set to welcome John Cudahy, President of the International Council of Air Shows (ICAS), to discuss what the latest data reveals about the popularity of vintage military aircraft at airshows across the United States. The conversation will focus on findings from the 2023 Spectator Survey conducted by ICAS, which indicates that static warbird displays have seen a 4.7% decline in spectator interest since 2018, and when you factor in the 2000-2016 average, they've fallen 7.2% overall. Warbirds in general saw a bump of 3.4% in 2018 over the 2000-2016 average but have since fallen from 44.7% to 42.5% in 2023. Despite this dip, warbirds remain the third most popular attraction at airshows according to Cudahy, demonstrating their continued significance in the airshow industry. However, this downward trend raises important questions: What does it mean for the future of warbirds at airshows, and how can operators work to reverse it ahead of the 2025 US Spectator Survey?Joining the discussion is Dik Daso, Executive Director of the Air Force Historical Foundation and former Curator of Modern Military at the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum. Daso brings an optimistic perspective and fresh ideas on how to reinvigorate public interest in warbirds. He will also serve as the featured speaker at this year's National Warbird Operators Conference (NWOC) in Dallas, where these critical topics will be explored in greater depth.Warbird Radio host Matt Jolley points out an ironic challenge facing warbird operators: the very thing they often find frustrating about airshows—spectators running up to touch their aircraft—could actually be a golden opportunity. Daso points out that tactile learning—even smell—is a huge part of the way children create memories. Jolley adds that the Spectator Survey supports this, with data showing RC airplanes (something accessible to young folks) have risen in popularity by over 10% since 2018. Modern military interest is up over 15% as well, reflecting the fact that things people can relate to drive popularity.Jolley, who is not only the host of Warbird Radio but also a top U.S.-based airshow announcer, brings an industry insider's perspective to this topic as well. He recalls how, as a kid, the smell of oil and avgas at an airshow would stick with him long after the engines cooled down, and how standing under the wing of a B-17 gave him a sense of history no book ever could. It's moments like those that forge lasting connections, and with fewer living veterans to share firsthand experiences, it is now up to operators and enthusiasts to bridge the gap and keep these stories alive for new generations. The key, Jolley argues, is to adapt storytelling methods to modern audiences, engaging them in ways that resonate and ensure these historic aircraft remain relevant. With the next ICAS Spectator Survey scheduled for 2025, now is the time for the warbird community to mobilize. The hard work of engaging audiences could yield tangible results in next year's data, helping secure the place of warbirds at airshows for years to come.To register for NWOC and be part of the conversation, click the link below. By 2012, Tim Howard had established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League. As Everton's starter, he regularly placed in the top four of various statistical categories and helped The Toffees inch their way towards the upper half of the table. At the same time, Howard was well established as the first choice keeper for the US Men's National Team. However, in his illustrious career a few moments still rise above the rest. One such moment was the goal Howard scored against Bolton on January 4, 2012. For both the sheer rarity and excellence of the feat, as well as the way he handled it, Howard endeared himself to American soccer fans in a way that highlighted a legendary career. Steve Jolley played ten years in Major League Soccer (MLS) for the LA Galaxy, NY/NJ MetroStars and FC Dallas. He was named an All-Star in 2001 when he was teammates with Tim Howard. Episode 87 David Schultz In the first episode of 2024, we explore the bizarre case of David Schultz, a 53 year old married trucker and father, who vanished without a trace in the early morning hours of November 21st, 2023. David was transporting a load of pigs in Sac County, Iowa. He didn't show up for his delivery, which was unlike him. Phone calls to his cell phone went unanswered. Later that day, David's tractor trailer was found parked and turned off in the middle of rural two lane U.S. Highway 71. The load of pigs David was transporting remained undisturbed and accounted for on his trailer. David's wallet containing a good amount of cash, and his cell phone were found inside the cab. In a ditch nearby, his jacket was found, but there was no sign of David himself. It was noted that David's truck was found facing North, but the spot he needed to deliver to in Sac City was to the South. When police reviewed surveillance footage of a stop David made at the Mile Marker 126 truck stop just after 11pm on the night of the 20th, there seemed to be nothing unusual captured; David had stopped there for about 16 minutes, and didn't appear to talk to anyone. He had a drink and checked his cell phone before driving off. Cellphone data shows David's phone arrived at Hwy 20 & 71 at about 12:18 a.m. The data shows the phone traveling north to where the truck was found. Data suggests the truck may have been there since about 12:40 a.m. Searches of the area were done, and while no sign of David was found, on a search done on December 2nd, 2023, a team found the remains of a missing Rockwell City man, 54-year-old Mark Edward Riesberg, on a wooded property southwest of Jolley. Riesberg was found in his PT Cruiser, the apparent victim of a self inflicted gunshot. He had been missing since late October. His cause of death is apparently suicide, and not connected to David's case. David's wife Sarah is dumbounded by her husband's disappearance. She can think of no reason why he would willingly vanish, and feels that his disappearance is a case of foul play. She discusses this baffling case with us in this episode. David Schultz is described as a White male, 5ft11, 190 lbs, with Brown hair and Brown eyes. He was last known to be wearing wrangler blue jeans, cowboy boots, and a Peterbilt hat. The truck he was driving when he vanished is a Red & White Peterbilt. Anyone with information about David Schultz's disappearance is asked to call the Sac County Sheriff's Office at 712-662-7127 or the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation at 712-262-1873. There is a reward of $2,000 being offered in this case. David's family has been financially impacted by his disapperance, and a Gofundme has been set up to help get them through this difficult time. For a full transcript of this episode, click here. Listen to this show as either a follow-on or a prequel to the shows with Mark Cuban and Ferrin Williams, PharmD, MBA (EP418) and Ge Bai, PhD, CPA (EP420). And if you're interested in this “what's going on in the world of PBMs, pharmacies, and employers” topic, also listen to the show with Joey Dizenhouse coming out on January 11, 2024. If you need the 101 on what's going on out there for indie pharmacies in your community, I'd recommend the show with Vinay Patel (EP241). What would you do if you owned an independent pharmacy and you discovered that most of your profit was coming from dispensing 10% of prescriptions? That if you just stopped filling 90% of the drugs; fired all your staff except, like, one person; and just filled the drugs that you made money on? If you did this, you would actually make more money in the pharmacy than you're currently making filling every single prescription. What would you do? This is the math that Benjamin Jolley, PharmD, my guest in this healthcare podcast and a multigenerational pharmacy leader and consultant to other pharmacies, discovered and wrestles with on the show today. And oh, by the way, a pharmacy is not gonna make it up in extra toilet paper sales or chewing gum sales when patients come into the pharmacy to pick up their meds. I asked Benjamin this, and he basically laughed at me. [What are the 10% of drugs that an indie pharmacy can make money on? You're going to find this to be a shocking coincidence. It's the same drugs that many of the consolidated PBM/pharmacies mandate are filled at their own pharmacies or mail order. And many self-insured employers maybe unwittingly sign contracts enabling this to go down, which, in effect, enables these consolidated PBM/pharmacies to essentially corner the market on profits from commercial purchasers.] So, turning our attention now to how to lose money in the pharmacy business, there's two ways to lose money: either outright losing money because the acquisition costs of the meds are actually more than the PBM (pharmacy benefit manager) mandates the indie pharmacy can charge its insured members. So, that's one way to lose money. A second way to lose money as an indie pharmacy is because generics are so cheap. The cost of providing the pill bottle might exceed the profits on a 47-cent generic, even if the profit margin is 100%—again, because the PBM sets the price. Now, you might be thinking the same thing I was thinking when Benjamin Jolley talked about this: Okay, well maybe … ugh! We want the patient to save money here, so … ? Here's the really big point that Benjamin Jolley knows because he sees this every day: What the patient pays and what the pharmacy gets paid has no relationship to each other or to what an employer plan may or may not pay. So, if the patient/member pays more and the independent community pharmacy gets paid less, that doesn't mean it will be a better deal for the employer. It doesn't mean it will be a better deal for the patient. Why? Because there's a PBM in the middle. Ge Bai talks about this in episode 420. For every $100 that is spent on generic drugs, $41 goes to the PBM. Seventy-nine percent of the time, if a plan member is in their deductible phase, it's cheaper to pay cash than to use the insurance that member is paying for. As someone said on LinkedIn the other day talking about patients paying premiums and paying more for generics than if they'd just gone in and paid cash, here's the quote: “You can pay more to pay more.” With so many deductibles as high as they are and with so many people who never reach their deductibles, as Benjmain Jolley says during the show today, we're giving this third party a lot of control over a transaction that they literally have nothing to do with something like three out of four times that any given patient picks up their generic med. How'd we get here as a society? It's weird. If you've listened to most of the shows that I've been doing lately largely spiraling around the whole “what's going on with the prices that patients/members are paying for generic drugs,” you might be thinking the same thing I am: It's such an egregious situation that it becomes an opportunity because the bar is so darn low and so many in the supply chain or the demand chain are getting royally screwed by the PBMs, not just patients. I mean, there's a lot of possible win-win collaborations, at least situationally. Local pharmacies and local businesses, for example, would seem to have a natural alliance. I'm reminded of the collaboration from a couple of years ago that Drew Leatherberry and Dan Strause talked about in episode 313. I'm super sure that you in the Relentless Health Value Tribe has or could come up with all kinds of innovative collaborations to help patients get affordable generic drugs, and I'd be super psyched to hear about them.
