I have always had a love / hate relationship with Lightroom, meaning 20% love and 80% hate. There are just parts of this app that drive me crazy, or seem like they're designed by someone that has never edited a photo in their life, or used a computer, or knows what a mouse is. Recently however, one feature has completely changed how I do my edits... Masking. Lightroom has had masks for a while, but a few recent updates have really taken them to the next level. On this episode I want to share how I use the latest features in Lightroom to help shape the light in my images. The basic premise of this is something I used to do with radial filters, and I talked about this back in January, 2021 on the TWiT Network's Hands on Photography show, episode 62, hosted by my buddy Ant Pruitt. A viewers eye is usually drawn to the brightest spot in an image, and sometimes to the most saturated spot. The idea with this technique is to create more depth in the image, by editing the subject separately from the environment they are in. By doing this you can make sure that not only is the subject the brightest, or at least from the point of view of what a viewer will focus on, but that the background falls back in the scene even more. If you're not familiar with dodging and burning, it's a technique carried over from the old darkroom days, where you would darken or lighten various parts of an image to create depth. By sculpting the tonal variances you can shape a subject's face, or accentuate the rolling hills in a landscape. Traditionally this is done by simply changing the exposure in parts of the image, and Lightroom has adjustment brush effect presets that do just that, with the burn option defaulting to an exposure of -30, and the dodge preset starting at +25. There is also a technique available for dodging & burning using luminance masks, a feature I found in a video from Serge Ramelli called "the best kept secret to Dodge and Burn in Lightroom". I haven't used this method myself, but it does look interesting. What this original concept of dodging & burning is missing is the fact that modern editors, like Lightroom, have many more adjustments available than just exposure. We now have sliders available for contrast, highlights, shadows, whites, and blacks. We even have contrast based tools like texture, clarity, and dehaze. When you add saturation and noise to the mix, a Lightroom adjustment brush, or other masking tool, gives you what I call "Dodge & Burn +". Today I am going through six of my images. For five of them I will show you the straight-out-of-camera shot, and my final basic crop and edit. Then, I will show you how I add my version of a mask, using a preset I like for my concert shots. My settings may, or may not, work for your type of photography, but it will at least get you started. For most images my preset is just a starting point, and I do change it a little to fit what each shot needs. On the sixth image I will start with the straight-out-of-camera version and show you how I might process it from scratch, start to finish. For many, if not most of my images, this technique is enough for me to consider the image done. I should note however that for critical client images, or portfolio shots, I will usually finish my images with a few techniques I love in Photoshop. If this show does well, maybe I will do more like it, and share those finishing touches as well. Join me as I walk through how I use one of my favorite Lightroom techniques to add depth to an image. It's "Dodge & Burn +" with masks in Lightroom on this Behind the Shot. When the internet began, trust was implied. But today, how can you know who or what to trust on the web? Today's guest is Steve Gibson. Steve has participated in the PC industry since its inception. He authored InfoWorld's top rated Tech Talk column for eight years and he produces the TWiT Network's weekly Security Now podcast in its 17th year. He developed a working replacement for the username and password site known as QRL and is best known for his 35 year old SpinRite mass storage and data recovery and maintenance utility which he continues to develop. Show Notes: [1:14] - Steve shares his background starting in the 70s. [2:41] - A personal experience inspired Steve to create SpinRite. [5:03] - When the internet was created, Microsoft wasn't on board. They rushed the solution when they realized it was necessary. [6:06] - Because there was no firewall, people could see anyone's C drive. [7:49] - In the beginning of internet use, there was implicit trust. [10:01] - Internet security has very complicated problems. [12:37] - We've created a complicated and constantly changing system. [14:03] - Steve's podcast is geared towards those who implement security solutions for consumers. [15:40] - In many ways, the internet is “consumer hostile.” [18:43] - The system is so fundamentally prone to abuse that end users hope for the best. [21:10] - Steve and Chris continue to print authentication and recovery codes. [23:35] - The reason we've gotten into this mess is because in the beginning, the internet wasn't very useful. [24:43] - The most commonly used password is still 123456. [26:39] - Password requirements make things even more complicated because everything constantly changes and every site is different. [29:01] - Steve shares what he thinks can help the industry, starting with certifications. [31:21] - Things are improving in some areas, including the federal government stepping in to regulate some things. [33:18] - Steve discusses regulation pros and cons. [35:12] - The internet has revolutionized efficiency and potential. [38:54] - There should be courses on how to search the internet for things. [40:26] - It is important to continue improving this powerful tool. Thanks for joining us on Easy Prey. Be sure to subscribe to our podcast on iTunes and leave a nice review. I have a PC, and I use this with a Rode Podcaster mic and Audacity to record my podcasts. I connect the mic via USB on my new Dell - so I think it's a USB3 connection. Most of the time my mic works really well, and the PC always shows that it's connected. Then suddenly the mic seems to stop picking up sound, or it will pick it up faintly. Everything is still showing as connected, and if I wait a while / disconnect and reconnect everything it all starts working again - for no apparent reason. When my Rode mic stops working, other mics like the one on my $10 gaming headset and mic are still working fine. I had the same problem with a Samson mic I bought, and thought the Rode would solve it but I'm guessing it's a connectivity or sound card issue. A: I'm not a windows expert by any stretch. What I would do is see if there is a specific driver for your device. Or make sure your USB drivers are up to date. This might sound funny, but I've also heard that if you change which port you have it plugged into, it may help. Sorry I'm not much more help than that. Your best bet is to contact the manufacturer of your device (Rode). -------------- Android From Todd Cochrane, CEO of RawVoice Inc, Parent company of Blubrry.com “If you do not think the Android platform is important, and those corresponding listeners are not important. Here are three takeaways from the Google I/O conference this morning. "Eight out of 10 phones that were shipped" last year "were based on Android” There are over 4,000 distinct devices you see in Android. Over a billion users each for Android, Gmail, YouTube, Maps, search, Chrome. Now how are you adding Android listeners? Are you supporting One Click Subscribe on Android? Are you making it easy for Android users to subscribe to your show? If you are scope locked on iTunes I suggest you think about the 8-10 devices sold last year running Android.” 2014 1.2 Billion phones sold Likely 2.5 Billion phones out there in use. Not counting Tablets or Old phones not activated but in use via Wifi. That means there are nearly 2 billion Android phones! Sometimes, Scott gets to do guest appearances on other shows. Sometimes the shows go well, sometimes not so much. Rarely, however, have I ever seen the FDØ™ enjoy himself as much as he did on the NSFWShow (part of the TWiT Network). We’ve linked to the audio, as usual, but if you have time do set aside an hour and watch the video. Hosts Brian Brushwood and Justin Robert Young are funny as hell, and the fans of the NSFW show make in-joke art as the show happens that will blow your mind. (Disclaimer: no minds were actually blown in the filming of this video)
Ask.com search, Mozilla F1, Silicon Valley Tour and the White Pages Show Notes 1. Ask.com retires search Ask.com has decided to throw in the towel regarding their search engine side of business. Ask.com has slowly dropped to only 3.7% of the search engine market, behind the likes of Bing, Yahoo, and Google. This leaves 130 employees in New Jersey and China without jobs and allows Ask.com to focus on their core competency, their humanistic question-and-answer service. 2. Verizon seeks permission to stop delivering White Pages Verizon is going to soon approach the D.C. Public Service Commission about eliminating the delivery of their White Pages service in the states of Virginia and Maryland. Verizon plans to distribute the White Pages via CD-ROM or print upon request. As residential landlines continue to decline from year to year, Verizon looks to phase out an outdated service and advance their profit margins. 3. Mozilla's New F1 add-on Mozilla has introduced a browser extension, F1, that allows you to share links in a fast, fun, and easy way. Integrate your Twitter feed, GMail, and Facebook status within your browser, from any webpage. The add-on is clean and molds neatly into your browser. Try it out Firefox users and let us know how you like it! 4. Silicon Valley tour I made a round robin trip to visit Apple, Google, Facebook and the TWiT Network. Be sure and listen in and find out what I have to say.
"With great power, comes great responsibility," or so Facebook continues to learn. Calacanis is closing his account, Laporte ditched his last week, and "delete my Facebook account" is a top 20 trending topic on Google. Is there a message somewhere in there? Certainly mixed messages still to come. Our guest on the show this week is Frederick Van Johnson, founder of Mediabytes Marketing and host of the popular show "This Week in Photography" on the TWiT Network. Frederick shares his insights on engagement and community-building as marketers struggle to keep up with new tools.
