Holy ****. That was New Zealander Erin Routliffe's reaction when she realised she'd won the US Open women's doubles final. She did it yesterday in straight sets with her playing partner Canadian Gaby Dabrowski; they've only been paired-up for about a month. Routliffe's share of the prize money from the 2:14 on court battle is US$350,000. Meaning Monday's win surpasses her career earnings to date. Auckland-born Routliffe, who switched allegiance from Canada to New Zealand in 2017, is just our second women's grand slam winner. When Lisa Owen caught up with her, the magnitude of what she'd achieved was yet to fully sink in. [embed] https://players.brightcove.net/6093072280001/default_default/index.html?videoId=6337002286112

In 1978, a 16-year old Pam Shriver upset the #1 women's tennis player in the world, Martina Navratilova, to reach the US Open Women's Final. This improbable showing launched a professional tennis career in which Pam would win an Olympic gold medal in 1988, reach #3 in the world in women's singles, and garner a staggering 22 grand slam doubles titles--20 of them partnering with that same US Open semifinal foe, Martina Navratilova. In this episode, Pam describes growing up a sports lover in Baltimore, MD, Billie Jean King's inspiring example, Martina Navratilova's fearlessness and “growth mindset,” and how a championship playing career migrated into a broadcasting career at ESPN, where she covers grand slam tennis today. In addition to Billie Jean King, Pam cites Marty McKibbin of McDonogh School and congresswoman Jane Harman as inspiring life influences.

Welcome to Season 9, Episode 37, of the ParentingAces Podcast. This week, Lisa speaks with former UCLA Men's Tennis standout, Karue Sell, about his recent gig as US Open Women's Singles Champion, Naomi Osaka's, hitting partner, and his move into the world of Tennis Technology. The impetus behind this week's pod was a tweet Karue posted recently: He went on to tweet about the personal growth afforded to players who choose the college route for their tennis which led me to reach out to him again and invite him on the show. Not only has Karue parlayed his college tennis career into a position as the hitting partner to the most recent Slam winner, but he has also partnered with other former college tennis players to form a new tennis website called MyTennisHQ. The site contains information for players of all levels, including technique lessons, equipment reviews, and interviews with current and former college players. If you are interested in reaching out to Karue for more information on his company and/or for lessons for your junior player, the best way to contact him is through a message on Twitter or Instagram. We talk about the extremely high quality semifinals between Naomi Osaka and Jennifer Brady, and how they are such solid players who delivered what was possibly the best match of the tournament. Then we move to the thrilling Victoria Azarenka and Serena Williams match, an old rivalry revived with all the high emotions and physical aspect that only those two can bring. In the final, we discuss about Naomi Osaka's game, and how it is a step above everyone else's, but also how Vika managed to almost make a dream 3 week span with a Cincinnati and US OpenDouble.
