Overcoming Mental Blocks in Pole Dance

The Evidence Based Pole Podcast

Welcome back pole dancers to the Science of Slink Podcast. This week we are going to discuss mental blockages and how to overcome them. We will define mental blocks, contributing factors, and techniques to try to help overcome mental blocks. So what is a mental blockage? When the obstacle keeping you from your desired movement goal is emotional and/or mental rather than physical. Mental blockages can arise when learning new things and/or doing a skill you already know how to do. As an instructor, I often see blockages arise when people are working on what they consider their weaker side. What factors can lead to mental blocks? Some contributing factors can be your environment being your classmates or teachers, anxiety, and trauma. When trauma is involved a specialist can be particularly important. Some great techniques to try to help overcome mental blockages are working with a specialist- like a sports psychologist, some evidence suggests EMDR may be effective, Notice if the reaction is mainly physical sweating, heart racing, muscle tension or mental rumination, racing thoughts, perseveration. For the former, physical relaxation techniques may be more helpful, for the latter mental refocusing & restructuring. Another technique worth a try is Vergence which is to look at your pole for 5 seconds, then behind the pole for 5 seconds, then try the skill. Additionally, try monitoring your HRV as a tool. Lastly, some Recommendations from Dr. Chelsea Pierotti, a sports psychologist specializing in dance, https://passionatecoach.com/mental-toughness-overcome-mental-blocks/ Determine that the obstacle is mental/emotional and not physical notice & reframe negative self-talk; "what if..." ... "so what"Reframe or modify the skill to reduce the challenge/fear seek additional support if needed Science of Slink Email Sign Up: http://eepurl.com/iimjnX Join pole instructor & personal trainer Rosy Boa as she chats with experts about the evidence-based practices you can introduce to your pole journey to improve your pole journey and feel better. Quotidian Profile of Vergence Angle in Ambulatory Subjects Monitored with Wearable Eye Tracking Glasses

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.09.14.506830v1?rss=1 Authors: Dilbeck, M. D., Gentry, T. N., Economides, J. R., Horton, J. C. Abstract: PURPOSE: Wearable tracking glasses record eye movements and fixations as ambulatory subjects navigate their environment. We tested the performance of eye tracking glasses under laboratory and real world conditions, to characterize the vergence behavior of normal individuals engaged in their customary daily pursuits. METHODS: To define the accuracy and variability of the eye tracking glasses, 4 subjects fixated with the head stabilized at a series of distances corresponding to vergence demands of: 0.25, 0.50, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, and 32{degrees}. Then, 10 subjects wore the eye tracking glasses for prolonged periods while carrying out their normal activities. Vergence profiles were compiled for each subject and compared with interpupillary distance. RESULTS: In the laboratory the eye tracking glasses were comparable in accuracy to remote video eye trackers, outputting a mean vergence value within 1{degrees} of demand at all angles except 32{degrees}. In ambulatory subjects the glasses were less accurate, due to tracking interruptions and measurement errors, only partly mitigated by application of data filters. Nonetheless, a useful record of vergence behavior was obtained in every subject. Vergence angle often had a bimodal distribution, reflecting a preponderance of activities at near (mobile phone, computer) or far (driving, walking). Vergence angle was highly correlated with interpupillary distance. CONCLUSIONS: Wearable eye tracking glasses provide a history of vergence angle and the corresponding scene witnessed by ambulatory subjects. They offer insight into the diversity of human ocular motor behavior and may become useful for diagnosis of disorders that affect vergence, such as convergence insufficiency, Parkinson disease, and strabismus. Failure of vergence size constancy challenges our understanding of visual scale

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.07.30.228940v1?rss=1 Authors: Linton, P. Abstract: The closer an object is, the more the eyes have to rotate to fixate on it. This degree of eye rotation (or vergence) is thought to play an essential role in size constancy, the process of perceiving an object as having a constant physical size despite changes in distance. But vergence size constancy has never been tested divorced from confounding cues such as changes in the retinal image. We control for these confounding cues and find no evidence of vergence size constancy. This has three important implications. First, we need a new explanation for binocular vision's contribution to visual scale. Second, the vergence modulation of neurons in V1 can no longer be responsible for size constancy. Third, given the role attributed to vergence in multisensory integration, multisensory integration appears to be more reliant on cognitive factors than previous thought.
