From the Spectrum: Finding Superpowers with Autism

In this episode, we discuss the connections between autism and eye movements, starting with the underappreciated role of eyes in human biology. We emphasize the significance of the retina, which is central to both image-forming and non-image-forming functions of vision. The discussion takes a turn towards how blind individuals also leverage their eyes for biological functions beyond sight, highlighting the pervasive influence of visual systems on human physiology. We explore the superior colliculus, an essential brain region that integrates sensory information from various sources, including vision, to direct our attention and reflexive responses. This area is crucial in understanding how sensory input differently, particularly in terms of attention bias and threat detection, which could explain some of the unique sensory experiences in Autism. We then touch upon the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) and the roles in error detection, conflict monitoring, and effort evaluation. The dACC's involvement in these cognitive processes can provide insights into why certain social cues or environmental stimuli might be overwhelming or less salient for individuals on the spectrum. Additionally, the episode covers oxytocin, a hormone/neuropeptide involved in social bonding and emotional regulation, discussing its synthesis through magnocellular and parvocellular pathways in vision. What do you think oxytocin is doing here, for the cub and for you? https://www.reddit.com/r/NatureIsFuckingLit/comments/11q03yn/a_cub_puma_admiring_his_mother/?rdt=64743Eye-Tracking as an Early Biomarker of Autism https://youtu.be/fJpIRHOZZO4The Roles of Oxytocin and Vasopressin in the Autistic phenotype https://youtu.be/DAtmC-s1_e0Mesencephalon https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midbrain#:~:text=The%20midbrain%20or%20mesencephalon%20is,view%20of%20one%20cerebellar%20hemisphere.00:00 - Introduction to Autism and Eye Movements; importance of eyes in biology, specifically mentioning the retina as a key player.04:19 - Non-Image Functions and Master Clock; Melanopsin; SCN- master clock08:13 - Eye Tracking and Autism Diagnosis; effectiveness at 14 months of age12:23 - Biological Underpinnings of Eye Movements in Autism; dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC), Superior Colliculus & Mesencephalon & sensory integration, attention in the context of Autism & brain development16:48 - Sensory Integration & Superior Colliculus and Reflexive Responses & Biasing Attention.20:58 - Developmental Aspects of Autism; embryonic stage before the central nervous system25:11 - Vision and Autonomic Nervous Systemvision and breathing can influence stress and calmness & bidirectional connections27:47 Reviews/Ratings and Contact InformationX: https://x.com/rps47586Hopp: https://www.hopp.bio/fromthespectrumYT: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGxEzLKXkjppo3nqmpXpzuAemail: info.fromthespectrum@gmail.com

In this episode, we discuss eye-tracking as an early biomarker for Autism. Eye-tracking, on infants, improve assessment outcomes at young ages, as young as 14-months-old. Adding biomarkers to the assessment process is valuable, and Autism research is beginning to offer more biomarkers. We've covered biomarkers in cellular respiration, serotonin, two studies on 6-week-olds- 1) predicted profound Autism with brain cortical organoids and 2) salience network connectivity. Today, we review four scientific papers on eye-tracking being added to the assessment process. A valuable consideration is the roles our eyes have on brain development, which we cover as well. Try Notion for free by visiting https://www.notion.com/macrumors On this week's episode of The MacRumors Show, we discuss some of the latest rumors about iOS 18 such as deeper Home Screen customization, AI-generated emojis, and more. With ‌iOS 18‌, Siri is expected to undergo a substantial overhaul with improved natural language processing, enabling more conversational interactions and proactive intelligence. The assistant will apparently understand and perform more complex tasks within apps. These tasks range from moving notes between folders and deleting emails to summarizing articles and recent notifications. Spotlight search will also allegedly see similar enhancements, integrating deeper with system-wide information to provide more intelligent and relevant results. In Messages, AI will suggest responses and create custom emojis based on message content. The Photos app will incorporate AI-powered retouching tools and Apple Music will offer auto-generated playlists and smoother song transitions. ‌iOS 18‌ is also expected to introduce a more customizable ‌Home Screen‌. Users will have the freedom to place app icons anywhere on the grid and change app icon colors. Safari is expected to gain an Intelligent Search option, summarizing key topics and phrases on web pages, and a new Web Eraser tool, which allows users to remove unwanted portions of websites. The Calculator app will be redesigned to include recent calculations and better unit conversion tools, becoming a universal app for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Apple Maps will introduce custom routes and topographic maps, enhancing navigation and outdoor activities. Accessibility is another focus area for ‌iOS 18‌ with new features like Eye Tracking, which uses the front-facing camera to navigate the interface, and Vehicle Motion Cues, designed to reduce motion sickness. Music Haptics will provide tactile feedback in sync with music, and Vocal Shortcuts will enable users to assign custom phrases for ‌Siri‌ to execute complex tasks. The adoption of the Rich Communication Services (RCS) standard should improve messaging between iPhones and Android devices with support for higher resolution photos, audio messages, typing indicators, read receipts, and improved group chat functionality. ‌iOS 18‌ is expected to be compatible with all iPhones that support iOS 17, including models as old as the ‌iPhone‌ XR and ‌iPhone‌ XS. However, iPadOS 18 may drop support for older models such as the first-generation 10.5-inch iPad Pro and the second-generation 12.9-inch ‌iPad Pro‌, focusing instead on more recent devices.

This episode contains: We three hosts are back at it again, and while it's been the normal posting schedule recently, for us “It's Been A While” (like two weeks) and Aaron Lewis of Staind gets a lot of shout outs. Steven won a game of Shatterpoint! And guess what? You too can kitbash like the pros and like Steven, if you've got access to a Dollar Store. Ben took his mom to the Wonderfront Music Festival for Mother's Day and whoo boy was it amazing. Big highlights were Beck (as the headliner), The Roots (wow, WHAT A PERFORMANCE) and Steel Pulse. Speaking of The Roots, hat tip to Ben's mom for recommending Questlove's book “Music Is History”. Devon got a new iPhone, and in true Texas style he likes 'em big and thicc (it's a Pro Max model). https://www.amazon.com/Music-History-Questlove/dp/1419751433  Don't vomit in the car, man! Apple announces new accessibility features, including Eye Tracking. Yes, Ben is an Apple fanboy, but hardware updates are boring. Like, how exciting is the fact that this slab of glass is thinner than ever before? However, software updates are king! Every June, Ben looks forward to WWDC (where they announce the features in new Apple operating systems), and in September when they come out it's like Ben gets to enjoy a birthday with a dear friend. Occasionally, Apple announces features outside of the typical June and September cycle, and recently they announced some pretty wild things coming to iOS 18, in celebration of Global Accessibility Awareness Day. The coolest of these, to Ben, is Vehicle Motion Cues. It will be able to help reduce motion sickness for passengers in moving vehicles. Research shows that motion sickness is commonly caused by a sensory conflict between what a person sees and what they feel, which can prevent some users from comfortably using devices or reading a book while riding in a moving vehicle. With Vehicle Motion Cues, animated dots on the edges of the screen represent changes in vehicle motion to help reduce sensory conflict without interfering with the main content. Using sensors built into iPhone and iPad, Vehicle Motion Cues recognizes when a user is in a moving vehicle and responds accordingly. Apple announces new accessibility features, including Eye Tracking (Apple Newsroom) Movie review: Kingdom of the PotA. Steven's a real Ape movie fan, whether new or old... except for maybe that one with Marky Mark? We're in the middle of a nine movie Ape-stravaganza. Steven loves how the new films are portraying ape society. Devon wonders if it's just an analogue for our modern human societies... like, is there an Ape Trump? Anyhow, in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes Steven gives it a 3 out of 4 stars, noting the special effects are amazing. Show update: Resident Alien. Devon is still really enjoying Resident Alien starring Alan Tudyk. Catch it on Netflix or Peacock. Book club: The Jaunt by Stephen King. A truly chilling sci-fi story from the master of horror. We loved it. Steven connects some dots with this story and the Deadlights across many of Stephen King's stories. The Jaunt (Goodreads) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNg27VrdW4M&pp=ygUvdGhlIGV4aXN0ZW50aWFsIGhvcnJvciBvZiBldGVybmFsIGNvbnNjaW91c25lc3M=  Deadlights (Stephen King Wiki) Next week in our book club: it's a short scifi horror webcomic: Chatbot Kingdom by Scott Base, from his Bad Space Comics anthology series.

First, they came for your fingerprint, then they came for your face, and now they want your eyes. What is Apple, Google, Meta and all of the other big tech companies doing with all of your biometric information that defines who you are? Why are they harvesting all of this biometric data? For safety? For privacy? Or for profit? Are they creating clones of us? Are they buying your genetic information from 23andMe? Are they harvesting all of this data just to sell us ads?Is there a deeper story to this?In this episode, I talk about Apple's Vision Pro and how biometric technology, like facial recognition and eye tracking, is changing things. I look at how much personal info these technologies can tell Apple, from who we are to possibly even our health. The show also covers how accurate this tech is and how it might predict diseases in the future. But, it's not all good news. We learn about how companies that sell data, called data brokers, can use our biometric info in ways we might not like. The episode then dives into the not-so-great sides of sharing our biometric data, like privacy worries and how this tech might hurt us. I talk about how important it is to know how our info is used and what we can do to keep our data safe. The conversation ends with advice on staying informed and secure in a world where our personal info is collected all the time.Highlights00:00 Intro and Episode Preview00:55 Impacts of Biometric Technology2:07 How much info do our eyes give Apple?3:03 Accuracy in Facial Recognition3:58 Predicting Diseases5:34 Data Brokers and Your Information8:23 Biometric Data's Negative Impact9:32 Awareness of Information Usage10:56 Privacy Concerns Among People11:22 Our Involvement in Data Collection12:57 Stay Informed, Stay Secure// Let's Connect //Website: https://throughconversations.comNewsletter: https://throughconversations.substack.com?utm_source=navbar&utm_medium=web&r=1zor7s// Say Hi on Social Media //Twitter: https://twitter.com/thruconvpodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thruconvpodcast/?hl=enYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCl67XqJVdVtBqiCWahS776g
