Austin Bechtold has you covered on the Memorial Day edition of The Fan Early Morning Show! Ben Cherington said Sunday internal projections did not have the Pirates at 26-25. Do you respect the honesty? Ke'Bryan Hayes is a terrific fielder but the bat is becoming a problem. Vince Velasquez hurt.

The Pittsburgh Pirates split a two-game set w/ the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday and Wednesday, with each team shutting out the other in both games. The Pirates offense woke up on Wednesday afternoon, scoring their most runs in a game all month and snapping a 14-game streak of four runs or less dating back to Apr 30 against the Nationals. With the offense finally showing life, is is something we can expect moving forward or will consistency continue to be an issue for the bats? Luis Ortiz struggled in his second start of 2023, as command and off-speed gave him fits against a lesser Tigers lineup. Does Ortiz go back down to AAA once Vince Velasquez returns? Patience a key w/ Ortiz w/ Mitch Keller being a prime example? Finally, Rodolfo Castro, Connor Joe and others contributed in a big way on Wednesday, something the Pirates will need from the supporting cast moving forward. They just got swept by the Rays. They've lost 4 games in a row. Are you worried about these Buccos? We talk about that and more...
On today's show, host Ethan Smith is joined by Austin Bechtold to discuss the Pittsburgh Pirates recent losses to the Tampa Bay Rays and why a bounce back performance against the Toronto Blue Jays seems almost required to the Buccos getting back on track. The duo previews the series as well as putting a spotlight on starting pitching, which looked good against MLB's best offense in Tampa, but Vince Velasquez's right elbow discomfort may change some things in the rotation. Finally, despite the sweep loss, the Pirates still lay atop the NL Central, so Ethan and Austin take a quick look at the NL Central teams and how the Pirates can maintain pace. This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. The Chicago White Sox scored just enough runs and got magnificent pitching as they swept the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. The White Sox have won six games in a row and have only lost once in the month of May. The difference has been pitching and solid defense. The White Sox bullpen only gave up one earned run during the entire weekend while starters Vince Velasquez, Dylan Cease and Dallas Keuchel turned in great performances. Jose Abreu provided most of the offense in Boston and he is heating up at just the right time. The White Sox return home for a seven game stretch and should be getting back Yoan Moncada as well as Joe Kelly. There are some really good things happening in the baseball world on both the North and South sides of town. Seiya Suzuki and the Cubs offense are a wonderful surprise, and the White Sox are barely striking out at all. The positives!
