My guest on this episode is Wayne Johnston. Wayne is the author of nearly a dozen celebrated novels, including The Colony of Unrequited Dreams and The Mystery of Right and Wrong. He has also published a pair of memoirs, including his most recent book, Jennie's Boy: A Newfoundland Childhood, about his own childhood in the 1960s. It was published in 2022 in Canada by Knopf Canada, and won the Stephen Leacock memorial award for humour. The Toronto Star, in its review of the book, said: “Never overblown or sentimental, Jennie's Boy is as vivid as one's own memories, a glimpse into a past of pain and wonder, of loss and joy.” Wayne and I talk about his nocturnal writing and living habits, and how he is slowly shifting his schedule to become more of a day person, why he has never suffered from writer's block, and how, as someone who has been nominated for many many writing prizes, as well as winning a few, he deals with the happiness and agony of waiting to hear them call the name of the winner. FOLLOW OUR PODCAST ON (search opentheword): PODCAST NOTES: Hi, my name is Wayne Johnston, and today on this podcast, I want to talk about the BIG Test. Anyone who has ever had to do a final exam in high school, college, university or tech school, knows how much fun they can be. Sick to your stomach. Headaches. Tired from cramming and OD’ing on Red Bull or coffee. But what if you were told you didn’t have to take your big final exam, and they just decided you were good enough that they were going to give you your diploma without it. Now I know personally of people who would say, ‘Wow’, I dodged a bullet and say thank you, and they would never look back. Me, maybe you, would always second guess yourself, and wonder if you really made it, if you are really well bona fide. Testing by God, may not be fun either, but it is never to destroy us, it is to prove us, even to ourselves, that we are well bona …

Steven W. Beattie hosts a conversation with consummate storyteller and bestselling novelist Wayne Johnston. His latest, Jennie's Boy, reaches back into his past to bring us a sad, tender and at times extremely funny memoir of his Newfoundland boyhood. "Wayne Johnston's childhood in Newfoundland was full of laughter, pain and poverty. And then laughter again. His memoir, Jennie's Boy, is an uplifting account of a childhood not just survived—he came close to death too many times to count—but triumphed over. Thank god he lived to tell the tale." — Rick Mercer For six months between 1966 and 1967, Wayne Johnston and his family lived in a wreck of a house across from his grandparents in Goulds, Newfoundland. At seven, Wayne was sickly and skinny, unable to keep food down, plagued with insomnia and a relentless cough that no doctor could diagnose, though they had already removed his tonsils, adenoids and appendix. To the neighbours, he was known as “Jennie's boy,” a backhanded salute to his tiny, ferocious mother, who felt judged for Wayne's condition at the same time as worried he might never grow up. Jennie's Boy is Wayne's tribute to a family and a community that were simultaneously fiercely protective of him and fed up with having to make allowances for him. His boyhood was full of pain, yes, but also tenderness and Newfoundland wit. By that wit, and through love—often expressed in the most unloving ways—Wayne survived. In the book , the author's father says at one point, "we don't always have a car, but we always have Wayne, and there's no telling when he'll have to be repaired!" The Wayne in this case is Wayne Johnston, who was so sickly as a child that his family wasn't sure he'd make it. Portia interviews Wayne about his new memoir.

It would be fair say that we’re fascinated by audiobooks and learning about their production, distribution, and everything else involved in the process. Last month we interviewed Jamie Dupras and Jeff Guillot from Deyan Audio in Los Angeles, but for this month’s podcast episode, we brought the conversation to Canada. Ann Jansen, Director of Audiobook Production at Penguin Random House Canada, and David Caron, Co-Publisher at ECW Press, joined BookNet Canada Research Associate Shimona Hirchberg for a conversation about the state of the audiobook industry in Canada and what’s on the horizon for this rapidly evolving chapter of publishing. A sweeping drama of personal and political ambition follows soon-to-be Premier Joey Smallwood – the self-described “Last Father of Confederation” – as he propels the Dominion of Newfoundland into union with Canada in 1949. Both saint and sinner, the charismatic, controversial Smallwood is hounded every step of the way by witty, booze-soaked reporter Sheilagh Fielding – his intellectual equal and lifelong nemesis. With a crackling narrative, sultry jazz score and a cast of forty characters, The Colony of Unrequited Dreams is an epic and expansive retelling of a defining Canadian story. “My collaborator Robert Chafe started working on Wayne Johnston's epic in 2009. It was a nearly impossible task – a story spanning 25 years with the most unlikely hero and villain combined in one man as ever landed in our collective history. This production debuted in January 2015 and I'm really proud to bring it to our national stage.” – Jillian Keiley, Artistic director, NAC English Theatre “Artistic Fraud is one of the most innovative and exciting theatre companies in Canada. The set design and staging were kinetic, memorable, elemental. Desks, chairs, walls, and actors slid and curved into place like perfectly thrown curling stones – like the stage floor was made of smooth ice. I found myself wishing that Colony of Unrequited Dreams could be made into a mini-series.” - NFLDTXT.COM An Artistic Fraud of Newfoundland (St. John's) production in collaboration with Canada's National Arts Centre.

Wayne Johnston "The; Colony of Unrequited Dreams" (Doubleday); "The; Divine Ryans" (Anchor) In each of these novels a secret is revealed-a secret history in one, a family secret in the other. But why has this Canadian novelist, of the quality of Robertson Davies or Margaret Artwood, remained a secret to Americans?
