We are going back to good ole 1978 to check out, for the first time strangely enough. The Hanna Barbera made for NBC TV film, Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park on a Vintage Cinema Review show. I'm joined with my good pal, Buddy Corley as we sit outside in the mountains on a nice warm summer day to discuss this epic film. Something that we have talked about doing for a good long while and a movie we both had yet to actually see, even though we are huge Kiss fans for many years. Fun times were had in a classic watch, then review old school podcast. Seeing the nostalgic look of the Six Flags Magic Mountain Theme Park. Which has always been a big deal for us in California and I believe with many other states. That was the whole cross country journey location for Walley World in National Lampoon's Vacation. Here you get an awesome old school 70s Kiss concert in the park. Interesting song choices, hilarious dialogue, and a much different main villain than expected from the title. It's not a great movie by any means, but it is still fun, goofy, and something of rock and roll history to be experienced for sure. Dazed and Confused, the all time classic hang out picture that just makes you want to be there on that end of school, start of summer vacation night. I know I watched the living daylights out of this movie in the past, especially during my high school years. Richard Linklater the director and writer captures the magic of that pocket era that is still relatable to this day, even if it is now almost a half century back. Weird to think about it that way. This film also introduced tons of later day big stars, like Matthew McConaughey, Ben Affleck, Joey Lauren Adams, Milla Jovovich, and Parker Posey to name a few. Talking all about the classic Alfred Hitchcock thriller, action, comedy film, North By Northwest of 1959. Starring Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint, James Mason, and Jessie Royce Landis. A spy thriller of a mistaken identity and a continual chase across the country. With all sorts of fantastic locations, dazzling special effects, and quite a bit of witty comedy to boot. This is the film that inspired the way James Bond 007 movies would emulate, starting with Dr. No and From Russia With Love. You can totally see that here in the North By Northwest. It also reminds me a lot of a pre Coen Brothers style too with a normal character being thrown into extreme situations. We are going way back in time, to good ole 1935, and reviewing one of the greatest swashbuckling pirate flicks of all time. Captain Blood! With Errol Flynn and Olivia De Havilland in their first major cinema roles. Plus, the great Basil Rathbone (Sherlock Holmes and the Sheriff of Nottingham) collides with Errol Flynn in a marvelous sword fight on the beach. Directed too by Michael Curtiz of Casablanca, to name a small film. You just don't get that same kind of high adventure glory these days. And if you think that the 1930s of cinema may be a little archaic, well you just need to dive back in time and find out how sophisticated and dialed in the motion picture industry was at this point. They don't call it the golden age of cinema for nothing. Fantastic sets, battling miniature Manowar ships, stunts galore, artistic cinematography, solid pacing, and acting to just put a smile on your face. Batman The Adventures Continue Season 1 Graphic Novel is the Animated Series continuation from original TV writers Paul Dini and Alan Burnett. Bringing together pretty much a season 5 but in comic book form with never used in the show characters and returning classics too. What makes this work so well compared to other series later days stories is by still having the original guys write the script. So the story never has that uncanny fan fiction feel to it that just makes some other classic shows just feel off in comic book form. All 8 of these issues are really something special and pair up nicely with some of the top tier episodes of the 90s cartoon show. Bringing in new characters that never appeared in the original show like Deathstroke and Red Hood Jason Todd. Then also creating some brand new ones too that just feel like they fit in perfectly. Plus of course all sorts of returning villains that one might and might not expect. Joker, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, Catwoman, Mad Hater, Scarface, Clayface, Lex Luthor, Killer Croc, Penguin, Firefly, and Clock King just to name a few. There's just so much going on in here that it almost needs a good 2 reads to catch all the well dialed in references. We are talking all about the latest X-Men cartoon up on Disney Plus. X-Men '97, a continuation of the 1992 animated series of what I would call the greatest generation of all time for animated series. Batman, Spider-man, Dragon Ball Z, Swat Kats, The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest, Ranma 1/2, Sailor Moon, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Pirates of Dark Water, The Simpsons, and X-Men just to name a few of the glorious shows from that early 90s era. Stories and animation were firing on all cylinders, making programing that appealed to a large audience beyond just kids. X-Men 1992 was such a huge deal to me as a kid, as it has been throughout my entire life. So, going into this new version is always going to be an interesting ride. All in all, they do a pretty good job here. With only a little bit of cluster in the certain section of the episodes. Mainly just jamming in too much but never anything that would be considered poor quality. This could be the new era turn around for the Marvel Disney world. In this episode of VIA VHS Rewind Review, we look back at the 1983 Burt Reynolds Comedy/Nascar film, Stroker Ace. It's the later years of the Burt Reynolds era and his star power is starting to wane. Instead of taking the role of Garrett Breedlove in Terms of Endearment (a role that won Jack Nicholson an Academy Award) Burt decided to opt against evolving his career and instead agreed to another formulaic Hal Needham car movie. This was not a smart idea as Stroker Ace was poorly received by critics and by the box office, opening at 8th place against the likes of films like WarGames, Trading Places and Return of the Jedi. A far cry from Smokey and the Bandit who was only out grossed in 1977 by the original Star Wars. But is Stroker Ace a film that was just outdated and not fairly viewed by fans and critics. Would it have been a bigger hit if released at the height of Burt Reynolds fame? Wes and Spencer give their thoughts on a film that's so American that Burt Reynolds and Dale Earnhardt share the screen. We have probably talked more good times about the Super Mario Bros 1993 flick than any other podcast around. And just out of the blue, like a Christmas miracle, comes a Extended Rough cut of around 20 extra minutes put back together in the film of deleted scenes, alternate takes, and parts that were from the shooting script. Edited back together by Garrett Gilchrist and put out by the SMB Archive fellows of Ryan Hoss and Steven Applebaum. We had the SMB Archive guys on the podcast a while back to talk all about the research into the Mario movie history. This version is something very special for any Bob Hoskins Mario and John Leguizamo Luigi movie fans out there. Spencer and I have been trying a lot of different things in regards to making VIA VHS a multimedia podcast while recording with each other from 2500 miles away. Unfortunately some of those things we’ve tried didnt work very well. For the double feature episodes of Romancing the Stone and Jewel of the Nile, I made the difficult decision to use the Skype audio for the podcast release. Unfortunately there were some unforeseen audio issues that went unnoticed until I listened fully to both recordings and it was impossible to use the recorded audio. The Skype audio isn’t ideal, but I feel like it’s at least listenable and I’d rather release the episodes as opposed to trashing it all together. You can also watch the episodes on YouTube if you prefer. So with that out of the way, on with the show. Jewel of the Nile After the unexpected success of Romancing the Stone, the studio and producer Michael Douglas was eager to begin work on the films sequel Jewel of the Nile. Sadly, screenwriter Diane Thomas who penned the clever and endearing Romancing the Stone, passed away when her boyfriend crashed her new Porsche, a Porsche that was given to her by none other than Michael Douglas as thanks for her work on the first film. When Diane was tragically killed, she was working on a project with Steven Spielberg, as was Romancing the Stone’s director Robert Zemeckis, who after being fired from directing Cocoon, was given the green light to direct his next film Back to the Future. Even without the director and writer from Romancing the Stone, production on Jewel of the Nile went ahead anyways. Lead star Kathleen Turner wasn’t pleased with the script for Jewel of the Nile, she was obligated to star in the film nonetheless, but perhaps her reservations on Jewel of the Nile were correct. Jewel of the Nile was rushed into theaters just a year after the release of Romancing the Stone, its apparent. This cheap follow up isn’t as good as the original, but still finds some of the charm from its predecessor at times, albeit fleeting moments. Romancing the Stone The story was of how Romancing the Stone was made is almost as romantic as the film itself. A burgeoning screenwriter Diane Thomas was supporting herself as waitress a at a local LA cafe, when non other than Michael Douglas came in for a bite to eat. Diane seized the opportunity by pitching her script for what would become Romancing the Stone to Douglas and the rest as they say, is history. The story of Diane Thomas ultimately has a tragic end, to be continued with our review of this film’s sequel Jewel of the Nile. Romancing the Stone is a clever action, romantic/comedy that’s often unfairly compared to Raiders of the Lost Ark. This witty play on Harlequin Romance novels was a huge success and is considered a classic today, also serving as a launchpad for director Robert Zemeckis. After troubling test screenings, which ultimately led several to re-writes and re-shoots, Zemeckis was fired from his next project Cocoon. But with excessive charm and charisma from his two main stars Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, and great directing by Zemeckis, they were ultimately able to create an endearing 80s classic. Cutthroat Island Rewind Review Cutthroat Island has an infamous legacy within the film industry, a cautionary tale of ego driven exuberance that killed an entire studio and produced one of the biggest box office bombs in history. Soaring costs, wasteful spending and overall recklessness on an epic scale left no room in the budget for...well, anything else, even advertising. So what’s left is a swashbuckling action-adventure with amazing costumes, elaborate set pieces, tremendous on location cinematography and gratuitous explosions, lots of of gratuitous explosions, including the what is possibly the best explosion in the history of movies. You’re left with a film that was supposed to be a blockbuster holiday tent-pole, possible franchise launching vehicle and a marketing machine that included merchandise, presumably toys and even a video game tie-in. But, is it any good? No doubt with all the money thrown at the film and the aforementioned scale of the production, it’s certainly a site to behold. But what about the story, the characters and the overall entertainment value? You know, the things money can’t always buy. In this episode of VIA VHS, Wesley and Spencer look back at this holiday dud, give their honest thoughts on the film and discuss what could’ve been had Cutthroat Island been a success

The Land Before Time was the first movie I ever considered my favorite and no film since has emotionally wrecked me or solicited such an emotional response as this film did when I was 5 years old. Such an incredible animated classic from Don Bluth and the dynamic duo of Spielberg and Lucas.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.... Twenty years ago today,as of the release of this episode, the Star Wars hype was at a fever pitch! Our Director's Spotlight features one of the most beloved and celebrated directors of our generation, Quentin Tarantino, a man who is still at his peak today. The Flux Capacitor is similarly amazing, as we reminisce on The Great Gatsby, Heathers, 10 Things I Hate About You and the Matrix who are all celebrating milestone anniversaries this week. Our Rewind Review is replaced with full analysis of the first two rounds of the 90s Movie Tournament. On the surface it seems like your typical shoot-’em-up 90s action flick starring Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes, but there’s much more to it than that. Demolition Man is a witty social satire, laced with Orwellian elements and blatant homages to Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, a denouncement of the PC culture nanny state and the lack of true humanity in the placid, rose colored Utopia many people crave. Demolition Man has aged well, perhaps to well. The fact that tho film is as relevant as it is almost 26 years after its release is actually frightening to me. Lenina Huxley, played by Sandra Bullock is a citizen of San Angeles in the year 2032. A soft, calm, tranquil society that is free of violence and crime, where harsh language and physical touch has been outlawed, especially real life intercourse. Lenina surrounds herself with relics of the 90s, a time when humans could be, well, human. Sure there was violence, crime and offensive language in the 90s but people could express themselves and not worry about offending anybody. People could enjoy many of their vices, as long as nobody else was getting hurt, they could take risks, have sex, laugh at vulgar jokes and watch R rated films. Of course, the real life 90s weren’t exactly perfect, but it was definitely a smorgasbord of culture compared to Lenina Huxley’s bland new world. One could argue even better than real life 2019. Of course, in this alternate universe of Demolition Man, a great Earthquake of 2010 precipitates a major paradigm shift in their culture. While the cultural change hasn’t been as dramatic, you can see a parallel in the change of culture in Lenina’s world to the shift we experienced in the 9/11 terror attacks, and this is portrayed in a film that was released 8 years before that event happened. I don’t think our world is in danger of becoming as ridiculously overbearing and neutered as Demolition Man’s version of 2032, but we aren’t as far off as I’d like. Demolition Man’s greatness comes in the form of two machismo maniacs and rivals from the 90s named John Spartan and Simon Phoenix, who are thrust into a docile daycare society after being unthawed from cryogenic freezing. These two turn San Angeles upside down as they settle scores with hand to hand combat, car chases, explosions, guns and bad one liners, as two muscle bound meatheads from a bygone era.

This week VIA VHS goes back to a golden age of comedy in the late 70s to check out a film by popular stand-up comedian and SNL side piece Steve Martin. The Jerk is directed by Carl Reiner and stars Steve Martin, Bernadette Peters, Mabel King, Richard Ward and Caitlin Adams. To discuss The Jerk, we’ve brought in an all around nice guy, a Southern gentleman from Tennessee, John Davidson, who may be enjoying an extended stay at VIA VHS. In this week’s Flux Capacitor we look back at films celebrating their 20th and 30th anniversaries. From 1989 we have the skateboarding cult classic starring Christian Slater, Gleaming the Cube. Also from ’89 we have the abysmal knock off of the Abyss called Deepstar Six. From 1999 we have the oft forgotten box office bust Virus starring Jamie Lee Curtis, William Baldwin and Donald Sutherland. Rumors of this show’s death have been greatly exaggerated! I know it’s been a little while since I’ve been in your earholes, I’ll try to be gentle.
