It takes conviction to build a team that aligns with both your values and your requirements. Diversity is important to Diane Yu, Chief Technology Officer of Better, a digital first home ownership company that offers mortgage, real estate, title, and homeowner insurance. Tune in to hear about Diane's career trajectory, why she believes that the best approach to building a team is to ensure that it's diverse, and how choosing talent is not just about the present but the future too. We touch on designing your target of talent according to your company culture and Diane tells us why she chooses to hire entrepreneurial people who never take no for an answer. Find out why she prioritizes personal characteristics over past experience and nurtures high performing recruiters within her company, judging this according to both accepted offers and recruited candidates. Diane believes that it is possible to build a team that fulfills both diversity and candidate criteria through building the right pipeline. Key Points From This Episode: Introducing Diane Yu, Chief Technology Officer of Better.  The start of her career as an entry level software engineer at DoubleClick. How she realized the impact of making good choices in hiring as a manager. FreeWheel's global client base and potential to change the entire financial industry. Why Diane believes that the best approach to building a team is to include diversity. How choosing talent is not just about the present, but the future too. Designing your target of talent according to your company culture. Why she chooses to hire entrepreneurial people who never take no for an answer. Why, in a fast-moving company, it is impossible to create a five-year plan.  Characteristics she looks for in new candidates: natural curiosity and eagerness to learn. The talent team's responsibility to interview for roles and gauge the right type of candidate. How Diane nurtures high performing recruiters.  Why she pays attention to more than just accepted offers. Why you have to have strong convictions to build a strong, diverse team. Revamping the target pipeline in order to prioritize both diversity and her criteria. An example of an unexpected drop: Diane's daughter playing soccer in a princess dress. Why Diane works very hard to make sure there is no one outlier on a team. Unconscious bias and avoiding this as a reason for candidate drop-off.   Tweetables: “When the leadership actually puts an extreme focus on talent, you can build the best execution focused team that can win out against large competitors.” — Diane Yu [0:06:38] “We could actually change the entire financial industry – how people own a home, how people get a mortgage, and how people use [that] home to actually grow their financial wealth.” — Diane Yu [0:07:17]“It's not about how well-spoken you are. It's about whether you have that mindset to be able to find a solution. If you believe something, you'll actually do whatever it takes to get there, not letting anybody stop you on the way.” — Diane Yu [0:13:58]“We need people that are naturally curious and are getting excited about learning new stuff. You can see that from the interview. You can see that via the conversation.” — Diane Yu [0:18:27]   “It actually takes conviction. You cannot just stop at, ‘This is what I want and then let's see how it goes.' You actually need to look through every step along the way.” — Diane Yu [0:29:25]   Links Mentioned in Today's Episode: Diane Yu on LinkedIn Better FreeWheel Hired Talk Talent to Me

Have you ever wondered what would happen to your content if you needed to take time out of your business?  Do you have content batched and scheduled ahead? Or would your content grind to a halt until you were able to get back to work?  If you're like many business owners I know, creating a contingency plan for your content is probably on your to-do list - but something you tell yourself you'll get to when you get a spare moment (which, when you run a business is often ‘never'). But it is important.  In this episode, I talk to business strategist Diane Mayor about how to create a contingency plan for your content (and why you need to).  You'll learn why planning for the good times (a sudden spike in sales, for example)  is just as important as planning for a crisis. PLUS what to include in your contingency planning.  And why this topic is important - even if you're a solopreneur.  {Click on the player above to listen to the podcast episode and/or read on for a detailed overview. Sales Reinvented
Why you NEED to Know Your Walk-Away Point with Diane Helbig, Ep #209

Sales Reinvented

Why is knowing your walk-away point so important in a negotiation? How does it influence the process? In this episode of the Sales Reinvented podcast, Diane Helbig shares her thoughts on knowing your floor—your bottom-line walk-away point—and why it’s such an important part of the negotiation process.  Diane Helbig is an international business advisor, sales trainer, and growth accelerator. She is the author of Succeed Without Selling and the host of the Accelerate Your Business Growth podcast. Don’t miss her unique take on the negotiation process! Outline of This Episode [0:36] Diane’s definition of negotiation [0:57] The key to long-term and successful relationships [1:14] Change the mindset around the negotiation  [1:58] Diane’s process begins with knowing your walk-away point [3:54] The attributes Diane believes are important in a salesperson [4:31] Tools, tactics, and strategies to prepare for the negotiation [5:11] Don’t make assumptions during any part of the process [6:52] How Diane’s firm walk-away point paid off big How Diane prepares for the negotiation process Diane’s negotiation process always includes calculating her walk-away point. It simply means that she writes out the point she is willing to walk away if an agreement can’t be made. She emphasizes that you must know this before you walk into the negotiation conversation.  Secondly, you must let the other party speak. You need to ask questions to understand their walk-away point. If you know their floor and ceiling, you can identify where you’ll meet in the middle. Diane implores salespeople to listen without a preconceived idea or agenda other than to learn. It’s critically important. Be quiet, calm, and hear what they’re saying and create healthy dialogue.  Don’t make assumptions about any part of the negotiation process. Don’t assume anything—the conclusion, where they’re coming from, and what the customer needs or wants. Diane points out that this is a recipe for disaster.  Be prepared to adapt the conversation Another ‘don’t’ that Diane believes is important: Don’t respond to things you don’t hear. Salespeople have a bad habit of hearing what someone is saying but responding with a different or competing thought. They tend to come into the conversation with ONE thing they believe the customer needs to know or ONE solution they’re dead-set on offering. When a salesperson responds to what they wish was asked—it causes a massive disconnect. It’s all well and good to be prepared to convey your underlying value message. But If it isn’t brought up—there’s no point in mentioning it.  When being blunt with your walk-away point helps you win big 15 years ago Diane had decided to leave the company she was working for. She created an agreement and a process that she wanted to approach her employer with. She created a strategy and she told the owner she wanted to change their relationship. She wanted to be paid a commission on each of her customer’s sales, not a salary.  The owner said no to her request. So she asked him to sit down to have a conversation about it. As she listened to him, she realized his reasons for saying no weren’t in the best interest of the business, but about staying in control. She knew what her walk-away point was and they hit a point where she just said she’d give him her two-week notice—and he backed off.  So they started to negotiate her commission. She wasn’t asking for commissions on sales with the highest paying clients or the other 180 she worked with—just the 20 clients she had a strong relationship with. They finally agreed on terms. When Diane went back to sign the paperwork and asked “What do you want to tell people about what I’m doing?”. He questioned why he would need to tell them anything. She pointed out that if a client called that she wasn’t working with anymore, someone would have to tell them something.  She realized he hadn’t paid attention to that portion of her conversation or the addendum in the paperwork. She ended up getting ALL of her clients and got exactly what she wanted and more while he got exactly what he wanted. She learned that you must be quiet, calm, and confident in the moment. The success of this negotiation was because she knew the value of what she had to offer and was confident with her walk-away point. Diane speaks on the topic of flow and finding your own personal “flow strategy” to reach your full potential, in music and anywhere else in your life.   In the past, “peak performance” and “performance psychology” were the exclusive realm of top-level professional performers. Now these ideas are becoming more accessible and applicable to everyday learners and musicians. Diane brings a unique perspective to to the world of performance.   In this conversation we talk about:   • How Diane rose to great success in the classical world, then put aside her violin completely - and returned to it later in an innovative way. • The specific practical steps you can take to find your own connection with a piece of music. • The three components of getting into “flow” state - only one of which is normally covered when you hear about flow.   You’ll be excited to apply Diane’s fresh ideas to your own practice and performance. This podcast addresses sensitive subjects like death and loss… often graphically and with explicit language and dark humor. Please see the show notes for additional content warnings surrounding this particular episode. Listener discretion is advised. CW: Losing the love of your lifeYou’re listening to the Witty Widow, the podcast where I sit down with fellow entertainers and chat about their experiences with loss and grief. My aim is to give insight into the grieving process and inspire hope with the stories of healing through laughter.I’m Tawny Platis, I work in audio entertainment and have a background in voice acting and comedy. I lost my husband on November 8, 2019 before he was 30 years old due to numerous health problems he had been battling his entire life. We hosted the Dirty Bits together on this podcast feed when it was a show about scandalous stories throughout history. After he passed away, I knew I wanted to continue podcasting, something we loved to do together... and I also wanted to keep his memory alive and help others gain a deeper understanding of using humor to cope with grief and loss. I had really been looking forward to speaking with my friend Diane because I was familiar with her podcast, History Goes Bump. She has an irreverent and sarcastic sense of humor, so she’s always been a kindred spirit to me. The fact that she takes a skeptical and exploratory approach to spirits and ghosts also piqued my interest considering the whole “my husband is dead thing.”Like your stereotypical atheist confronted with death, I suddenly developed quite the interest in spirituality when my husband’s health really started going down hill. I even almost joined a church at one point, which is how all my friends knew I really wasn’t handling my husband’s illness well. Neither George nor I are religious but we both have a deep fascination with philosophy, consciousness, space, time, energy… ya know, all that psychedelic, hippy dippy- California -intellectual -stoner kid- shit, bro. So as opposed to finding comfort in the thought of a traditional afterlife, I find comfort in a more general and scientific study of the possibilities surrounding the concept of the continuation of consciousness. That doesn’t mean I don’t pray, or light candles, or sacrifice the occasional chicken or dance naked in the moonlight in order to communicate with my husband’s spirit because….. hey, who knows. One of the unfortunate consequences of getting sick is being unable to travel. I was a little too ambitious in trying to blaze through the grieving process. So instead of recording in person with Diane in Florida as originally planned, we chatted online. That’s why her audio is a bit distorted in some spots. Show Notes:Diane explains History Goes Bump and what her show is all about. Spiritual exploration. How she investigates. Diane tries to take a scientific approach and explains how she measures energy with an electromagnetic thingy (look this up). What are spirits? Energy? A rip in the space-time continuum? A different dimension? Diane considers herself an,“Open-minded skeptic.” How Diane got interested in ghosts - her own personal experiences, including the first shared experience with her sister. Diane “I’m one of the weird kids' ' Mom loved to go through the cemeteries, causing Diane to have a love for cemeteries. Her first time seeing a body in a casket. How believing that something about you is going to continue on, it gives you more accountability. On Twin Flames - Diane has a unique perspective on the loss that I’m experiencing. Soulmate and Twin Flame aren’t the same. I didn’t have the vocabulary to express what losing George meant. I felt like I couldn’t make people understand why it was so painful. A soulmate can be anyone- a best friend but someone you can get sick of. A Twin Flame is YOU. A Twin Flame - your spirit or soul is in two pieces....they’re the other piece. When you find your twin flame, you KNOW. You can know that in a minute. Because Diane understands Twin Flames, she could empathize when I lost George. It’s one spirit divided so that’s it. That’s it for me. You only have one twin flame and mine is gone. I’m never going to have a relationship like that ever again. There’s a scene in the finale of season 2 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel where Midge says, “I’m going to be alone for the rest of my life.” She says it matter of factly. She says it with certainty. And she doesn’t mean she won’t date or have fun. But Midge knows that she’s not the same person she used to be. She knows that chapter is over. That scene stuck with me when I first saw it just a couple of weeks before George passed away. Just like Midge, I’m very much aware that that chapter in my life has ended. Do I want companionship and affection? Of course. I’m lonely, I don’t want to be, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Do I expect to have anything remotely resembling what I had with my Twin Flame? Not a chance. But I know that it exists. And I’m starting to reach a point where I understand that the pain will someday be tolerable enough so that I’m grateful to have had six years with my Twin Flame. I’ll reach a point where the pain will be tolerable enough so that I can smile at those memories I have instead of cry. God or the universe is a psychopath because why else would it be SO hard to find this person? Or if you did find that person, why would they be taken away so young? How when I was holding George, I felt myself absorbing him. How death changes you. I’ve taken on his traits. He was my mirror image that came into me. His spirit is in me and with me, but he’s not there to hold me. The loss of physicality is excruciating. George’s unique laugh. Everyone loves his laugh. Why I’m using humor to cope - my situation is absurd. It’s ridiculous. Absurdity is funny. The title of this podcast feed is sarcastic. George and I are incredibly irreverent people. And I don’t think his personality changed when he died. How the Big Bang Theory got Diane through her hysterectomy. Why it’s ok to laugh - you can’t just sit in a corner and weep all day long. Public speaking can certainly bring about nerves and uncertainty, whether you’re a new speaker or you’ve been speaking a while and want to try something new on stage or with a larger audience. How I’m approaching writing my book proposal and book this year (self-doubt, for sure!) How some of our clients have approached dealing with uncertainty and fear The benefits of uncertainty - that’s where growth comes from   Interestingly, the week we recorded this episode, I had received an email newsletter from Leo Babauta of Zen Habits about uncertainty.  Here’s what he wrote: “The first mindset shift to consider is that uncertainty is not bad, or something to be avoided. It’s a natural part of doing anything meaningful. In fact, feeling uncertainty is a great sign that you’re doing something challenging and meaningful. “The second mindset shift is to see an uncertain path as a practice opportunity. It’s not something to run from, but a place to stay, so that we can grow, learn, and create.” Embrace trying new things and having new experiences, both on stage and off.   What’s something new you want to do this year? Listen to this podcast episode for tips to improve your live performances, your confidence on stage and your audience impact. You'll also learn how Diane's performance coaching and my vocal coaching work together in a synergy that supports instead of confuses our artist clients. This podcast is now playing at iTunes , Google Play,  TuneIn Radio, . Subscribe and don't miss an episode... and please leave a review where you like to listen! REVIEWS ARE MUCH NEEDED and APPRECIATED! If you’d like help with live performance, contact Diane at her website http://dianekimbrough.com/. For help with any vocal matter, try Power, Path and Performance vocal training, available at www.JudyRodman.com in vocal lessons and on CD courses. Subjects covered in this episode include: Diane's background & experience Explanation of what live performance coaching is. How Diane uses her dance and acting experience in her coaching. Defining stage presence. How Diane and I work synergistically to increase stage and vocal abilities. The value of getting live performance coaching before recording final studio vocals. How both of us work on focusing message delivery. Diane's coaching strategy of videotaping performance and playing it back without sound. A vital understanding Diane wants artists to get out of her coaching sessions: The song itself - the structure of the music and the lyrics - should largely dictate stage movement. How that goes with my vocal training. How to figure out who your voice needs to represent in any song. Diane and I discuss and solve our disparate ways of approaching and coaching authenticity. We discuss what is and is not 'real', how to use acting techniques to make the moment real for the audience even when it's not real for you. Why you don't need to freak out at the thought of acting. Case study about an artist we both successfully worked with who had a serious eating disorder and issues with 'feeling' emotion. How critical voices and situations like bad-fitting heels affect confidence on stage. Knowledge brings power. Case study about another of our artists who we helped go from serious insecurity to up & coming artist catching serious career fire. Diane says it's best to have some stage experience before booking coaching sessions. Ways Diane asks clients to practice what they learn from her. Written homework is assigned, along with continual videotaping and silent viewing to review how audiences see you. The importance of separating singing and stage movement practice. Why you should put your guitar down and try singing without it. How that same strategy - separate practice - is a wise way to practice vocal technique. Diane and I bat around the concept of singing to the one heart. We use different words for the same thing... Diane calls it having a conversation on a melodic line. PLEASE NOTE: There was so much we shared I decided to split the interview. This is Part 1. Listen to Part 2, on the episode following this one. Diane Dahli's Retirement Journey Diane Dahli is a retired teacher of 15 years. She is all about enjoying her retirement and living her passion, which is currently her blog. It took a Diane awhile to realize her passion and purpose post-retirement. After attempting to jump back into the classroom and sitting still for quite some time, she decided to pursue writing in the form of a blog. She has loved it ever since and would like to continue doing it as long as she can. Her Retirement Journey Diane also loves to read. She has read books like The Writer’s Way and The Purpose of Life. She also joined a self-awareness group in the midst of trying to discover her purpose. Diane wasn’t looking for busyness in her retirement, she was looking for purpose, something meaningful. She found herself wondering if she retired too early if there was something else she needed to do in teaching. After applying for a job in a classroom, she got a job in a resource room. It was a very intense position. At the end of six months, she clearly knew she didn’t want to go back to teaching. Diane spent time gardening, volunteer and spending time with her grandson. She also took a year-long course in herbalism and grew herbs, something she still does. While she loved these things, they still didn’t capture her full, long-term attention. She was immersed in life but also had this idea that there must be something more that she wasn’t getting to. How she found her purpose in Retirement She eventually decided to revisit something she had always wanted to do, to write. At first, she didn’t know what to write about. Eventually, she decided to write about her generation after researching and discovering blogs, such as Time Goes By, about The Silent Generation. Her daughter was tech savvy and helped her design her blog website. She has now been blogging for three years. Diane gets up every morning at 5 a.m. to write for about two hours before her husband gets up. She finds all that is involved in blogging, including the social media, very fulfilling. Meet Diane Berberian. Legally blind. Stage 4 tongue, throat & neck cancer survivor. Adaptive athlete competing in endurance events. And oh, by the way, she's 60. Diane is one of the most positive people you'll ever meet. I thought I was positive. Diane blows me away. At the beginning of the interview I ask her, "Did you ever think you'd be called on to share your life to inspire others?" to which she replied something like, "Truth? Yes! My mom always told me I was special so I believed it!" Diane is one of those extraordinary people who you think you are helping when you guide her in a race, or support her during cancer treatments, only to realize after it's over, that she helped you so much more than you ever realized possible. That is a sign of someone who transcends humanity. She emits love, acceptance, and just plain possibility. As her tattoo says, "She believed she could, so she did." That is Diane Berberian in a nutshell. Today we talk about: How Diane became the positive person she is: Nature, Nurture or a little of both? Cancer: When you know something is wrong with your body, but you can't make headway with your doctor. Diane's advice: Get 2nd opinions right away. Don't wait. Going blind: Macular degeneration a slow progression to vision impairment Competing as a parathlete: 1st race on a tandem bike was Ironman Texas! "I've had the power all along" Diane 6.0: What does it mean to be a 60 year-old-woman today "Lead by example" mentoring style Do you want to be as badass as Diane someday? I know I do! Here is my take: #1) Be positive. This is a decision. Your attitude is within your control. You can choose to be positive. Diane is a positive person. Like she said, she has bad days, but she sees the world in an open way, full of possibility. #2) Go after the things you want. As she says, you gotta want it. If you want it, make it happen. #3) Her final nugget: Your crown has been bought and paid for. You just have to wear it.
